However, it has now been revealed that one of their key players was dealing with a significant injury throughout the end of the regular season and their brief postseason appearance.</p><p>Super utilityman Mauricio Dubon played the final month of the season with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb and <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5825739/2024/10/09/astros-mauricio-dubon-thumb-surgery/" rel="noopener">will require</a> surgery to repair the damaged ligament, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic. Dubon injured his thumb on Sept. 6 against the Arizona Diamondbacks while sliding into first base. While X-rays initially came back clean, the ligament tear was discovered after further imaging was done.</p><p>The typical recovery time for this type of injury is usually between six to eight weeks according to Rome. That means Dubon should have more-than enough time to get back to 100% before the start of Spring Training.</p><p>Despite playing through what seems to be a painful and significant injury, Dubon’s production never dipper. In the 18 games he played hurt, Dubon slashed .291/.322/.346 while continuing to play Gold Glove-caliber defense across the diamond for the Astros. Without Dubon, the Astros may not have been able to fend off the Seattle Mariners in the race for the AL West division title.</p><h2>What Mauricio Dubon means to the Houston Astros</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/10-09-24-dubon-image.jpeg"><figcaption>© Thomas Shea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Even though he may not be a household name, Dubon is one of the Astros’ most important players. While he is a capable hitter, batting .269 this season, Dubon’s best attribute is his versatility.</p><p>A utility Gold Glove winner in 2023, Dubon started games at every position except pitcher and catcher this season. While he spent the majority of his time in the outfield, he is still an elite defender at second base, and can hold his own at shortstop, third base and first base. Dubon’s versatility was especially valuable to the Astros this season when they dealt with so many injuries, most notably when star right fielder Kyle Tucker missed over three months with a fractured shin. Dubon was able to step in and help keep the Astros afloat.</p><p>Heading into next season, expect Dubon to continue to play a utility role for the Astros instead of spending the majority of his time at one position. However, if they are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-joe-espada-front-office-alex-bregman-free-agency">unable to re-sign Alex Bregman</a>, a more permanent move to third base could make sense.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Here are three trades that would not only fill critical positions but could also inject fresh talent into the Astros’ lineup.</p><p>With the worst farm system in baseball, the Astros should seek talent outside the organization via trade. 99% of the time, trades within your division will not happen, so naturally, players from the A’s, Rangers, Angels, and Mariners won’t be on this list. However, plenty of sneaky good trade options exist for the ‘Stros.</p><h2><b>Targeting Yandy Díaz from the Rays</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Yandy-Diaz.jpg"><figcaption>David Richard-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-jose-altuve-dishes-alex-bregman-uncertain-future-playoff-exit">the expected departure of Alex Bregman</a> leaving a considerable hole at third base, Tampa Bay Rays’ Yandy Díaz emerges as an ideal replacement. Especially given his strong performance in 2024. Díaz posted a <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/diazya01.shtml" rel="noopener">.281 batting average</a> and a .341 on-base percentage, underpinned by his excellent plate discipline. His power metrics were also robust, with a slugging percentage that complemented his ability to consistently get on base. In 2023, Díaz had a career year, slashing .330/.410/.522 respectively. He earned an all-star nod, a silver slugger and finished 6th in MVP voting in the American League.</p><p>To acquire Díaz, the Astros could offer Rhett Kouba, a promising right-handed pitcher who is nearing MLB readiness in Triple-A, and Chase Jaworsky, a flexible infielder from Single-A who shows potential with both glove and bat. This trade would provide the Rays with upcoming talent suitable for their developmental model, while the Astros would secure a high-OBP player capable of filling Bregman’s shoes.</p><h2><b>Christian Encarnacion-Strand</b></h2><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-houston-30-million-jose-abreu-roster-move">release of José Abreu</a> left a gap at first base that the Astros have struggled to fill. Christian Encarnacion-Strand from the Cincinnati Reds would be an excellent target to address this need. In 2024, Encarnacion-Strand had a down year, with numbers that don’t jump off the page. His slashline of <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=encarn000chr" rel="noopener">.190/.220/.293</a> can definitely Astros fans away, however, the potential he can bring to the ball club is something fans should be excited for.</p><p>In just 211 minor league games (from 2022-2023), Encarnacion-Strand has slashed .322/.386/.604 while slugging 56 home runs. The unbelievable raw power that Encarnacion-Strand brings is unmatched, and if developed correctly, the Astros can add yet another powerful bat to the lineup behind Kyle Tucker and Yordan Alvarez.</p><p>The trade could involve sending Zach Cole, a promising outfielder in Double-A, along with Nick Hernandez, a reliable bullpen arm, and Forrest Whitley, a former top prospect needing a new environment to rediscover his form. This package offers the Reds potential immediate and future value, while the Astros would acquire a powerful and productive first baseman.</p><h2>Freddy Peralta</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Freddy-Peralta.jpg"><figcaption>Benny Sieu-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Justin Verlander’s potential retirement poses a significant challenge to the Astros’ starting rotation. Freddy Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers presents an attractive solution. Despite a challenging 2024, Peralta maintained a strong strikeout rate with 200 Ks over 173.2 innings and held a respectable <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/peralfr01.shtml" rel="noopener">3.68 ERA</a>. His propensity for strikeouts and ability to handle innings would be invaluable for the Astros.</p><p>Back in 2023, Peralta really broke out for the Brewers, and was an all-star that year. He brings electric stuff and has been as reliable and consistent as they get the last three seasons. With an Astros rotation that has struggled with injury and depth issues the last few seasons, adding a veteran like Peralta would be a huge step in the right direction, especially if the club still has a “win now” attitude.</p><p>A compelling trade package for Peralta could include Pedro Leon, an outfield prospect with notable power and speed, and Trey Dombroski, a left-handed pitcher showing potential in Double-A. Including cash considerations could also sweeten the deal, making it financially appealing for the Brewers while securing a key piece for the Astros’ future rotation aspirations.</p><p>These trades are designed not just to fill the gaps but to strategically enhance the Astros’ roster in areas of critical need. Acquiring  Díaz would stabilize the infield both defensively and offensively. Peralta would bolster the pitching staff, bringing a high-ceiling arm into the rotation. Meanwhile, Encarnacion-Strand would provide the necessary power at first base that the Astros have been missing.</p><p>As the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/moves-astros-must-make-playoff-exit">Astros navigate this pivotal offseason</a>, these moves would signify a strong intent to remain at the forefront of contention in the American League. They were <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-joe-espada-reaction-2-game-sweep-tigers">swept by the Detroit Tigers in the Wild Card Series</a>, ending their incredible streak. Now, the Astros have a massive off-season ahead of them. How should Alex Bregman, Yusei Kikuchi, and Pete Alonso factor into their off-season?</p><p>The roster has been changing even through the success of the past decade. While Jose Altuve and Bregman are still around, Carlos Corre, George Springer, and Gerrit Cole are all out the door. The Astros’ front office has shown that they are not afraid to make a move and they certainly should make some this off-season.</p><h2><b>Alex Bregman must stick around</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Alex-Bregman-with-Houston-Astros.jpg"><figcaption>Ken Blaze-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Astros made each of those moves looking to improve their team for another championship. They succeeded, winning the World Series in 2022 without Correa, Springer, or Cole. Their goal is the same now, but they need some veteran leadership to get that job done. They should retain third baseman Alex Bregman for exactly that reason.</p><p>It will not be cheap for the Astros to keep their future Hall of Famer. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-news-matt-chapman-agrees-to-massive-6-year-extension-deal">Matt Chapman just signed a six-year, $151 million contract</a>, which could be used as a comparable for Bregman. Houston’s star <a href="https://stathead.com/baseball/versus-finder.cgi?request=1&amp;player_id1=bregma001ale&amp;player_id2=chapma000mat" rel="noopener">has been a</a> much better hitter over his career, sporting a better home run, RBI, OPS, and batting average total. Chapman has been the better defender, winning four Gold Gloves while Bregman does not have any.</p><p>This championship window was built on the greatness of Bregman and Altuve. Without them, the window would officially be closed. They have questions at first base and in the rotation, there is no reason to create another question at third base. With an all-time player having an opportunity to be a career Astro, they should open up the checkbook this winter.</p><h2><b>Yusei Kikuchi should have a role in 2025</b></h2><p>When the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-houston-lands-yusei-kikuchi-trade-deadline-deal-blue-jays">Astros traded for Yusei Kikuchi at the trade deadline</a>, they expected him to be a solid depth starter. What he became was a bona fide ace who lost only one regular season game in Space City. While he is an older player, Houston should still keep him around for 2025 and beyond.</p><p>Justin Verlander is a very large question mark moving forward for the Astros. After a short trip to the Mets, Verlander is back in Houston and barely pitched down the stretch this year. Additionally, Bregman is a two-time World Series champion and two-time All-Star who has finished within the top five of MVP voting on two separate occasions.</p><p>With that being said, Bregman’s production has declined in recent years. He was one of the best players in baseball in 2018 and 2019. In 2022 and 2023, Bregman recorded respectable, albeit far from spectacular numbers. And as mentioned, his 2024 performance did not live up to his lofty expectations.</p><p>Bregman may not receive the contract he is looking for in free agency. Perhaps his resume will lead to teams displaying a willingness to give him a lucrative contract, though. Third baseman <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-alex-bregman-shares-emotional-message-amid-departure-rumors">Alex Bregman is a pending free agent</a>, and Jose Altuve is nervous about it.</p><p>Altuve <a href="https://x.com/chandler_rome/status/1841607307173790073?s=46&amp;t=YAm5wwmcnC6J27chz4RDIQ" rel="noopener">sounded off about</a> Bregman’s future, via The Athletic’s Chandler Rome.</p><p>“In my mind, there is not a chance this is his last game,” the 34-year-old said. “He gave a lot to this organization so it’s time for us as an organization to pay him back and make him stay here.”</p><p>Altuve also added that he’ll repeat that to Astros owner Jim Crane.</p><p>Bregman weighed in on the <a href="https://x.com/Chron_MattYoung/status/1841602495065268271" rel="noopener">possibility of staying</a> in Houston, via The Houston Chronicle’s Matt Young.</p><p>“I hope so, but I’ll let [agent] Scott (Boras) and the team handle that,” the two-time All-Star said.</p><p>Bregman slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 homers and 75 RBI this season. Boras is a known stickler, so Bregman will probably go to the highest bigger.</p><p>Bregman made $30.5 million in 2024, and with another quality season in the books, he’s in a position to ask for another hefty amount of cash. The team will move on to face the American League’s number two seed the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS. The win was particularly sweet for Tigers manager AJ Hinch, who managed the Astros from 2015-2019 and won the World Series with the team in 2017 before being fired in the wake of Houston’s notorious sign-stealing debacle.</p><p>Following the Tigers 5-2 victory over the Astros on Wednesday, Hinch was asked for his thoughts on beating Houston and advancing in the playoffs. Hinch simply responded, “<a href="https://twitter.com/RyanFieldABC/status/1841593068673237456" rel="noopener">Isn’t baseball great</a>? It’s unbelievable” before walking away, per ABC’s Ryan Field on X.</p><p>After taking the first game 3-1 behind six scoreless innings <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/tigers-news-aj-hinch-tarik-skubal-injury-game-1">from ace Tarik Skubal</a>, the Tigers turned to the bullpen for Game Two. However, the Tigers broke the game open in the eighth. DH Kerry Carpenter singled to center and scored on a wild pitch after advancing to third base on a Matt Vierling single. After Astros reliever Ryan Pressly walked Colt Keith, Houston brought in Josh Hader. Houston captured the American League Pennant four times in that stretch and won two championships – most recently beating the Philadelphia Phillies <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/3-most-valuable-astros-in-2022-world-series-ranked">for the title in 2022</a>.</p><p>The Astros were caught stealing signs during the 2017 season. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-gm-jeff-luhnow-manager-aj-hinch-suspended-1-year-part-punishment-2017-cheating-scandal">Hinch received a year-long suspension</a> from Commissioner Rob Manfred for failing to stop the scheme. After serving his suspension, Hinch was hired to manage the Tigers in 2021.</p><p>After finishing with a losing record in his first three seasons with the club, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/tigers-news-aj-hinch-shocking-playoff-berth">Hinch guided the Tigers</a> to an 86-76 record in 2024, securing the final Wild Card berth. However, Valdez didn’t give the Astros a performance worthy of ace status.</p><p>The left-hander lasted just 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs as Houston fell 3-1. He struck out three and walked two. After the loss, Valdez<a href="https://x.com/JBristolKHOU/status/1841244504168276083" rel="noopener"> admitted that his performance</a> wasn’t up to his expectations, via Jason Bristol of KHOU 11 News Houston.</p><p>“Sometimes you feel really, really good and you go out there and don’t get a result you were expecting,: Valdez said. “Just waiting on the next game.”</p><p>Valdez commended the Tigers for taking pitches and working deep into counts. He admitted that he fell behind on hitters, leading to walks and overall not his usual status quo of pitching.</p><p>While Valdez struggled, all of Detroit’s damage came in one inning. The Tigers scored three in the second on the back of three singles. However, it was more than enough as the Astros couldn’t muster any more than one run across the plate.</p><p>Framber Valdez was a stud during the regular season, pitching to a 2.91 ERA and a 169/55 K/BB ratio. However, Game 1 against the Tigers didn’t show off why Valdez was chosen to start in the first place.</p><h2><b>Framber Valdez’s postseason struggles</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Framber-Valdez.jpg"><figcaption>Troy Taormina-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While the Tigers loss is at the forefront of Astros fans mind’s, this isn’t the first time Valdez has struggled in the postseason. The left-hander went 0-3 across his three starts during the 2023 playoffs.</p><p>His appearance in the ALDS was particular bad, allowing five earned runs in 4.1 innings against the Minnesota Twins. But then he followed that up with an 8.22 ERA over his 7.2 innings against the Texas Rangers in the ALCS. Over his 17 total playoff appearances, Valdez holds a 4.34 ERA and a 95/34 K/BB ratio.</p><p>The lefty did shine in Houston’s last World Series title run. Against the Philadelphia Phillies, Valdez held a 1.46 ERA and an 18/5 K/BB ratio. This is going to be a fun series, and there are a lot of good storylines surrounding it.</p><p>First of all, Tigers manager AJ Hinch was the manager of the Astros before coming to Detroit, and he helped lead the organization to a World Series title in 2017. However, a scandal broke out involving Hinch and that World Series Astros team. The scandal was regarding Houston stealing signs of opposing teams.</p><p>Now, Hinch is with the Tigers, and he has the team back in the postseason for the first time in 10 years. Detroit looked dead in the water not too long ago as they were 55-63 on August 10th. Things changed very quickly.</p><p>The Tigers had a 0.2% chance to make that playoffs back in August when they were eight games below .500, but they went 31-13 to close the season, earning them a Wild Card spot.</p><p>Houston is coming into this series as the favorite as they won their division, and they will be hosting all three games in the series. Buckle up folks, this is going to be fun. Here are three predictions for the series:</p><h2><b>Tarik Skubal will strikeout eight in a game one win</b></h2><p>The best pitcher in baseball will get the start on the rubber in game for the Tigers as Tarik Skubal will be going up against Framber Valdez. Skubal is the favorite to win the Cy Young, and he won the American League triple crown with the most wins, strikeouts and best ERA. Skubal has an 18-4 record this year, a 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts. He is going to add more to that strikeout tally in game one, and he is going to pitch Detroit to a 1-0 series lead.</p><h2><b>Spencer Torkelson will hit a game three home run</b></h2><p>This series is going to go to three games as the Tigers will take game one behind a masterful performance from Tarik Skubal, and the Astros will even things up to force a winner take all game three. This is when Spencer Torkelson will step up for the Tigers. This has been an up and down year for Torkelson. He spent a lot of time in the minors after struggling for awhile, came back hot, and then cooled off again. He has stepped up in some big moments down the stretch, and he will do that again in this series.</p><h2><b>The Tigers will win the series</b></h2><p>The Tigers have been the hottest team in baseball since August 11th, but they are still the biggest underdogs in the playoffs in terms of World Series odds. The Astros are expected to win this series, but that’s the thing about baseball. Get hot at the right time, and it doesn’t matter what happened April-July. Just look at last year’s World Series matchup between the Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks. Houston decided to hold him out of the remainder of the regular season in hopes he’d be ready for the playoffs. The Astros’ plan paid off, as Alvarez now looks poised to lead the team’s offense throughout the postseason; barring an injury setback.</p><p>Through a career-high 147 games, Alvarez hit .308 with 35 home runs and 86 RBI. However, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-justin-verlander-uncertain-houston-future">Astros will be without Justin Verlander</a>.</p><p>Houston has left Verlander <a href="https://x.com/ByRobertMurray/status/1841131444954923236" rel="noopener">off of</a> their Wild Card roster, via Robert Murray of FanSided. While he will be eligible to pitch in further series should the Astros advance, Verlander will not have the opportunity to face his former team.</p><p>While Verlander is a likely Hall of Famer, his 2024 numbers have left a lot to be desired. He holds a 5.48 ERA and a 74/27 K/BB ratio. Verlander spent a lot of time on the shelf and wasn’t his normal effective self when he was on the mound.</p><p>He offers plenty of experience and playoff pedigree, but Houston decided that Verlander’s struggles were too risky. The Astros will enter their Tigers matchup relying on their remaining pitchers and AL West winning surge to advance in the postseason.</p><p>What his exile off the roster means for the rest of the playoffs and Justin Verlander’s future in Houston is unknown.</p><h2><b>State of Astros’ pitching rotation entering playoffs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Justin-Verlander.jpg"><figcaption>Troy Taormina-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While the Astros felt they could afford leaving Verlander at home, Houston’s pitching staff has been decimated by injuries throughout the season. Five players are on the 60-day injured list as the playoffs open.</p><p>Houston will be turning their attention to players such as Framber Valdez, Yusei Kikuchi and Ronel Blanco. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-yusei-kikuchi-of-astros-proving-to-be-steal-of-mlb-trade-deadline">Kikuchi holds an impressive</a> 2.70 ERA and a 76/14 K/BB ratio over his 10 starts with the Astros. Blanco is right behind him with a 2.80 ERA and a 166/68 K/BB ratio. Valdez, who Houston named their Game 1 starter against Detroit, has pitched to a 2.91 ERA and a 169/55 K/BB ratio.</p><p>As a whole, the Astros’ starting rotation ranks ninth in the league with their 3.81 ERA. Their .233 batting average against is second in the league while 111 home runs allowed are tied for the 11th-fewest. Houston’s 326 walks allowed are the third-fewest.</p><p>At least for now, the Astros believe their rotation is better off without Justin Verlander in it. He is a legend in the game, but his 2024 campaign hasn’t been up to par. If you’re raising your hand, you’re probably lying because almost no one thought the Tigers would be in the playoff race let alone in the dance. With the 2024 MLB playoffs a day away, Detroit is gearing up for its first playoff series in 10 years as the Houston Astros await them in the AL Wild Card Series.</p><p>The Tigers had a losing record entering the final week of August but a blistering last five weeks of the regular season led them to October baseball. Few teams will have as much momentum as Detroit entering the MLB playoffs and perhaps none have less to lose than the team that broke the league’s joint-longest playoff drought.</p><p>While the vibes are high in Detroit, a date with a postseason juggernaut awaits them. The Astros will give no edge to the Tigers, especially at home. A three-game series can quickly turn into two if the Astros do whatever they want. That tends to happen more often than not.</p><p>Something has to give in this series and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/tigers-news-improbable-postseason-berth-fans-losing-minds">Tigers fans hope</a> their young up-and-coming squad and pull off the upset and keep this fairytale season going. Detroit might need some luck on their side to defeat Houston. Regardless, let’s get to our Tigers bold predictions for the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/tigers-vs-astros-al-wild-card-game-1-prediction-odds-pick">AL Wild Card Series</a>.</p><p><i><b>*Watch MLB games LIVE with fuboTV <a href="https://www.fubo.tv/lp/mlb/?irad=377812&amp;irmp=492408" rel="noopener sponsored">(free trial)</a>*</b></i></p><h2><b>Detroit’s starters carry the staff</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Tarik-Skubal.jpg"><figcaption>David Reginek-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>It is often said that pitching wins championships. You need to score runs to win, but great pitching can undoubtedly keep teams in games and at the very least steal one. If a team is lucky, that stolen one could be the series clincher.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/tigers-news-aj-hinch-shocking-playoff-berth">Tigers were carried</a> by their pitching staff over the last month of the season. Detroit posted a 2.79 ERA, fourth-best in the majors in September. It helped the Tigers win more games than any other team during the season’s final month.</p><p>For the season, Tigers starters had the fourth-best ERA at 3.69. Much of that success came from ace Tarik Skubal who is the likely AL Cy Young Award winner. If Detroit is to win this series, it probably comes down to Skubal’s performance in Game 1.</p><p>It’s a toss-up after Skubal but the Tigers are well-equipped to put the pieces in place as they go. The use of certain bullpen arms could be avoided with a star outing from Skubal. That could alter Detroit’s plans for the rest of the series, especially if they are in need of only one win in two games.</p><p>Assuming <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/tigers-news-tarik-skubal-honest-upcoming-playoff-debut-stellar-season">Skubal delivers a quality start</a>, the Tigers will only need four or five innings from their Game 2 starter. Casey Mize or Reese Olson can provide that, or maybe they have Jackson Jobe or Beau Brieske piggyback off an opener for multiple innings. Whatever Detroit decides, its success likely comes down to how well the pitching staff holds. The Astros won’t score more than three combined runs on Tigers starters.</p><h2><b>Tigers closer shuts the door</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Jason-Foley-Detroit-Tigers.jpg"><figcaption>Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK</figcaption></figure><p>Detroit’s bullpen has been lights out lately and the Tigers relied on their relievers a lot during the end of the season. No bullpen threw more innings in September than Detroit’s and Tigers relievers held the third-best ERA among bullpens during the month with a 2.41 mark.</p><p>The Tigers found a closer they can trust in Jason Foley who’s stepped up in a big way down the stretch. Foley prepared himself for a major role in the MLB playoffs with plenty of high leverage outings to close the regular season.</p><p>Foley secured nine saves in September, three of them during the final week of the season to help the Tigers secure several key victories. He finished with 28 saves in 32 opportunities and finished the year nicely by bouncing back from a few rough outings.</p><p>Foley’s second half was indicative of Detroit’s as a team. The 28-year-old had a 2.70 ERA since the All-Star break and served as arguably the Tigers’ best reliever when games mattered most.</p><p>Foley appeared in two games against the Astros this year, allowing one unearned run across two innings. The Tigers will want Foley in any high leverage situation but will have to be strategic with where they use him. He’s recorded more than three outs in one appearance only twice since July. He’ll record two saves in the series.</p><h2><b>Rookie is clutch for offense</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Tigers-Colt-Keith.jpg"><figcaption>Kimberly P. Mitchell / USA TODAY NETWORK</figcaption></figure><p>The MLB playoffs are a place where players make a name for themself. Unknowns become regulars in conversation when the bright lights of October arrive. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/tigers-news-aj-hinch-channels-ted-lesso-as-detroit-charges-into-playoff-race">Tigers have a few candidates</a> who are ready for the spotlight. Rookie second baseman Colt Keith is a name to watch.</p><p>Keith has shown flashes since his MLB debut on Opening Day and has had strong months throughout his rookie campaign. He had a 1.048 OPS in July and hit .342 in May, displaying what he can do at the plate over a hot three or four-week stretch. Why can’t he replicate that in October?</p><p>Keith seems like a player built for the moment and he’s already taken a stab at the Astros this year. He recorded nine hits in 20 at-bats against Houston, including a four-hit game, one of three he had.</p><p>Keith cooled off to finish the regular season, collecting only three hits in his last eight games. He was swinging a hot bat before that, posting a .310/.355/.379 slash line in 15 games from Sep. 2 to Sept. 20.</p><p>Colt Keith can be a significant figure in the middle of Detroit’s lineup. The Tigers might need him to be to defeat the Astros, especially if the games are tight. Coincidentally, they lost that season to the Baltimore Orioles, who they could have played had they beaten the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. It was the end of a stretch where they had made four consecutive playoff appearances, including a World Series appearance. Ultimately, they have made two World Series appearances in the last 18 years. However, they have not been able to win either, and they have been ringless since 1984.</p><p>There will be plenty of players making their first appearances in the postseason. Significantly, Riley Greene, Kerry Carpenter, Matt Vierling, and Parker Meadows will all look to make an impact in their first crack at postseason baseball. None of them are household names. Yet, all have a golden chance to make a mark as a heavy underdog against a team that has done this dance multiple times before.</p><p>Skubal will have the most pressure on him as he attempts to navigate a lineup with plenty of playoff experience. He is 1-1 with a 3.16 ERA over four career games against the Astros. Thus, he has had some success against them. When he finishes, he will turn it over to an inexperienced bullpen. Jason Foley is their closer and went 3-6 with a 3.15 ERA this season. Now, he will try to shut down one of the best lineups in baseball.</p><p>The Tigers will cover the spread if they can cobble together some hits and score early to give Skubal the lead. Then, they need good pitching from Skubal and for the bullpen to avoid collapsing.</p><h2><b>Why The Astros Will Cover The Spread/Win</b></h2><p>The Astros are back in the postseason, making their eighth straight appearance. Amazingly, this is the second-longest playoff streak in baseball. These playoff appearances include four World Series appearances and two titles. Therefore, it’s been a fantastic run for them, and they look to keep it going this time around. After struggling to start the season, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/how-astros-regained-real-world-series-contender-status" rel="noopener">Astros bolted back into contention</a>. Now, they are looking to try to win their third World Series, and it starts with a win in the wildcard.</p><p>Jose Altuve is looking to make more playoff memories. So far, he is batting .273 with 117 hits, 27 home runs, 55 RBIs, and 89 runs over 103 postseason games. Alex Bregman will also be a factor. Significantly, he is hitting .235 with 85 hits, 19 home runs, 54 RBIs, and 63 runs over 97 playoff games. Yordan Alvarez is a monster in the postseason. Substantially, he is batting .295 with 61 hits, 12 home runs, 41 RBIs, and 39 runs over 58 games. Kyle Tucker has struggled the most out of the “Big Four” and looks to do more. Ultimately, he is hitting .237 with 50 hits, eight home runs, 28 RBIs, and 27 runs over 62 playoff games.</p><p>Valdez will take the mound for Game 1 and look to get the Astros deep into this game. He comes in with a playoff record of 7-5 with a 4.24 ERA over 16 games. When Valdez exits, he will turn the game over to a Top-5 bullpen. They have two elite setup men, Bryan Abreau and Ryan Pressley. Overall, Abreu is 0-0 with a 2.66 ERA over 20 playoff games, while Pressly is 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA and 14 saves in 46 postseason games. Josh Hader is the closer and is o-2 with a 1.37 ERA and five saves in 16 postseason appearances.</p><p>The Astros will cover the spread if their “Big Four” can clobber the baseball and drive runners home across the plate. Then, they need Valdez to pitch well and get the lead to his elite setup men and closer.</p><h2><b>Final Tigers-Astros Game 1 Prediction &amp; Pick</b></h2><p>It would be a nice story if the Tigers could shock the Astros and win Game 1 and then win this series. Unfortunately, talent matters. The Tigers simply don’t have the star power aside from Skubal. Also, he will need some run support. Who is going to give it to him? Plus, this bullpen is questionable. Conversely, the Astros have a plethora of arms that can do some damage. They could meet in the American League Division Series, but Cleveland has its spot booked while Houston has to win a three-game wild card series later this week. Cleveland was the big surprise in baseball this year, at least before the Detroit Tigers caught fire in the last 45 games of the season to swipe a wild card berth. First-year manager Stephen Vogt took over for Terry Francona and was able to maintain the winning culture “Tito” left behind. The Guardians had the best bullpen in baseball, largely because Emmanuel Clase became the best closer in baseball for 2024. The Guardians catch the ball, take the extra base, and get the big late-inning outs needed to win a lot of games. They do not figure to be an easy out in October.</p><p>The Houston Astros started the season 7-19. Teams with a record that bad through 26 games do not make the playoffs… until now. Until 2024. The Astros overcame their atrocious start and a 10-game deficit to the Seattle Mariners to rally in the middle third of the season and then close the sale in September for yet another American League West Division championship. The Astros’ starting rotation was shredded by injuries this season, but with guys such as Ronel Blanco, Spencer Arrighetti, and Hunter Brown stepping up to fill in the gaps, Houston was able to recover. The Astros have made the American League Championship Series every year since 2017. It would be an amazing story if this group, in spite of its injuries, is able to do the deed yet again.</p><h2><b>Astros-Guardians Projected Starters </b></h2><p>The two teams are using their bullpens in what is essentially a spring training-style game. Yet despite their regular season success, some MLB insiders still believe the Houston Astros, not the Yankees, are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-new-york-slapped-harsh-astros-reality-mlb-playoffs">the team to beat in the AL playoffs</a>. While Yankees fans no doubt bristle at the notion of Houston having the postseason advantage, the Astros did New York a serious solid on Saturday.</p><p>Houston beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-3. The win <a href="https://x.com/BryanHoch/status/1840195156202439021" rel="noopener">clinched home field</a> advantage for the Yankees throughout the American League playoffs, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.</p><p>New York holds a one-game lead over the Guardians for the AL’s best record. But the Yankees took the season series against Cleveland this year. So even if New York loses and the Guardians tie things up with a win in the final game of the regular season, the Yankees have home field locked up for as long as they stay alive in the playoffs.</p><p>The Yankees won a near season-long battle for the AL East when they beat the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, capturing the division crown. Despite having the third-best record in the American League, the Orioles will end up with the four seed as the Astros won the AL West.</p><h2><b>The Yankees clinched the top seed in the American League</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Aaron-Judge-and-Juan-Soto.jpg"><figcaption>Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>New York has benefited from <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-gerrit-cole-drops-huge-mlb-playoff-outlook-after-beating-orioles">elite pitching by ace Gerrit Cole</a> over the second half of the season. Still, there is cause for some concern for Yankees fans as the team’s potential playoff opponents <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-new-york-doomed-2024-mlb-playoffs">have the advantage when it comes to pitching</a>.</p><p>Nonetheless, Giancarlo Stanton believes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-giancarlo-stanton-issues-strong-declaration-about-team-to-beat-in-the-playoffs">New York is the team to beat</a> in the postseason. And it’s easy to see why as Yankees’ slugger and presumptive AL MVP Aaron Judge took a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-aaron-judge-home-run-new-york-playoffs">five-game home run streak</a> into Saturday. In fact, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-aaron-judge-replicates-mlb-feat-last-done-babe-ruth-104-years-ago">Judge is the first player since Babe Ruth</a> in 1921 with a five+ game homer streak and a 10+ game walk streak at the same time.</p><p>Judge was unable to extend the streak against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday as he went 0-5 and the Yankees lost 9-4 at home. But with the Astros win over the Guardians behind a quality start from veteran Justin Verlander, New York wrapped up the top seed in the AL. Verlander went six innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and zero walks.</p><p>The Astros will make the playoffs for the eighth straight season this year. The team has won two World Series titles in the last seven years and made four appearances in the Fall Classic during that span. Houston has beaten the Yankees in the ALCS three times in their dominant seven-year run. New York hopes that home field advantage and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-yankees-padres-blockbuster-juan-soto-trade">additions of Juan Soto</a> and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-new-york-agrees-jazz-chisholm-trade-marlins">Jazz Chisholm Jr.</a> change the outcome this season.
