That was no different on Wednesday when the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-2 in dramatic fashion in Milwaukee.</p><p>With the game tied at two in the bottom of the 11th inning, Brewers leadoff man Brice Turang stepped up to the plate with runners on the corners and just one out. When days go like that, you kind of know at some point in the game that your name is gonna be called.”</p><p>Turang’s confidence won’t be too down after this one, not only because of the walk-off but because of his three-hit outing against the Royals in a win on Tuesday.</p><p>This victory moves both teams to 2-4 and gives the Brewers a 2-1 series win over Kansas City to start the week. They will now stay at home for a four-game set against the Cincinnati Reds, who will also come into Milwaukee at 2-4 on the young season.</p><p>Most of the positives in this game for the Brewers come from the mound. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/brewers-news-freddy-peralta-opening-day-starter-pat-murphy">Freddy Peralta pitched a gem</a> in his second start of the season, going eight full innings and allowing just two hits and one earned run. Peralta struck out eight batters before three bullpen arms entered and gave up just two hits in three innings. Jared Koenig ended up getting the win for Milwaukee.</p><p>Back-to-back wins after an 0-4 start could be a launchpad for this Brewers team that is trying to compete in a crowded NL Central division this season. He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Milwaukee Brewers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The New York Yankees put on a home run derby this weekend against the Milwaukee Brewers, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-boone-message-haters-new-bats">their use of ‘torpedo bats’</a> garnered a ton of attention, causing some controversy, but Brewers manager Pat Murphy <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/2025/03/30/yankees-torpedo-bats-brewers-manager-pat-murphy-mlb/" rel="noopener">firmly shut that down</a>.</p><p>“My old a** will tell you this for sure: It ain’t the wand, it’s the magician,” Pat Murphy said, via Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News. “So if the bats help, I’m sure every guy in the league will be using them within a week. But I’m telling you, it’s the hitter, not the bat.”</p><p>Before Sunday’s 12-3 Yankees win, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-trevor-megill-blasts-yankees-torpedo-bats-made-history">Brewers reliever Trevor Megill made it clear</a> that he is not a fan of the torpedo bats, and said that MLB would let it slide because it is the Yankees. However, New York is not the only team to utilize these bats. Last year, Giancarlo Stanton and Jose Trevino used them, according to Phillips.</p><p>Now, Anthony Volpe and Jazz Chisholm Jr. were noticed as players using them, while Austin Wells is as well. Teams like the Minnesota Twins have been seen using this type of bat as well, and Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora has said that his team <a href="https://x.com/ChrisCotillo/status/1906432751085273144" rel="noopener">tried the bats in spring training</a>.</p><p>It will be interesting to track how the Yankees and other players perform with this type of bat, and if any more information comes out on how helpful they are. The Yankees will be tested in their next two games, starting with Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks with Corbin Burnes on the mound. Cortes skipped talking with media after allowing three home runs on the first three pitches of the game. Cortes was pulled after<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44468168/nestor-cortes-yankee-stadium-return-go-way-planned" rel="noopener"> allowing five total home runs</a> in just a few innings of work.</p><p>“It’s not a good feeling,” Cortes said, per ESPN. “So obviously didn’t go the way I planned.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/yankees-news-cody-bellinger-drops-best-admission-aaron-judge-3-hr-game">The Yankees annihilated the Brewers</a>, 20-9, behind nine home runs. Aaron Judge hit three of them, in one of the most memorable performances of his career.</p><p>Cortes played last season for the Yankees. Milwaukee had such an outstanding 2024 season, winning the NL Central. The addition of players like Cortes made many feel as if the club could compete for an NL pennant this year.</p><p>Cortes <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/nestor-cortes-struggles-against-yankees-in-first-brewers-start" rel="noopener">still has the trust</a> of his Brewers teammates, despite his poor showing Saturday.</p><p>“I don’t know how he handled it, but I do know he’s a professional and he’s a damn good pitcher,” Brewers first baseman Jake Bauers said, per MLB.com. “He’s going to bounce back, and he’s going to be solid for us.”</p><p>Even Cortes’ former teammate Yankees slugger Aaron Judge knows that Cortes has more in him.</p><p>“Nestor’s been here for years, one of the best lefty pitchers in the game,” Judge said. “He’s a guy that’s going to go out there, throw strikes, attack you. So we just tried to go out there and be aggressive in our zone. ‘Goldy’ and ‘Belli’ set the table there and got things going. The Yankees are two games into the season, and they have scored 24 runs in those first two contests. The bulk of the scoring came in Saturday’s 20-9 beatdown against the Milwaukee Brewers. The new “torpedo” bats were working overtime in that one, and they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-russell-wilson-babe-ruth-home-runs-brewers">helped get the Yankees off to a fast start</a>. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-judge-new-york-home-runs-nestor-cortes">first three pitches that Yankees hitters saw</a> ended up in the seats. It was quickly 3-0, and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-fans-skeptical-ny-bats-9-hr-onslaught">Yankees ended up hitting nine home runs</a>. Yes, nine.</p><p>Yankees players are loving their new bats so far, but the Brewers haven’t been big fans. Trevor Megill was not one of the pitchers who had to face the scorching-hot New York lineup on Thursday, but he did <a href="https://x.com/snyyankees/status/1906396819799921007?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet" rel="noopener">have some comments</a> regarding the new bats.</p><p>“I think it’s terrible,” Trevor Megill said to the <i>New York Post</i>. “We’ll see what the data says. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I feel like it’s something used in slo-pitch softball. It’s genius: Put the mass all in one spot. It might be bush [league]. It might not be. But it’s the Yankees, so they’ll let it slide.”</p><p>So, what is it about <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6241862/2025/03/30/yankees-bats-aaron-leanhardt-marlins/" rel="noopener">these news bats</a> that’s different? They were invented by M.I.T. physicist Aaron Leanhardt, and centering the weight of the bat on the sweet spot is the trick.</p><p>“They’re going to point to a location on the bat that is probably six or seven inches down from the tip of the bat,” Leanhardt said, according to an article from <i>The New York Times</i>. “That’s where the sweet spot typically is. It’s just through those conversations where you think to yourself, why don’t we exchange how much wood we’re putting on the tip versus how much we’re putting in the sweet spot? That’s the original concept right there. Just try to take all that excess weight and try to put it where you’re trying to hit the ball and then in exchange try to take the thinner diameter that used to be at the sweet spot and put that on the tip.”</p><p>The Yankees were already known for being one of the best power-hitting teams in the league, and these new bats could elevate that strength to another level. We saw what this team is capable of on Saturday, and that was only the second game of the season. The Yankees gave former teammate Nestor Cortes a rude welcome in his return to New York, running him from the game after just two innings.</p><p>Following the brutal beatdown, Cortes was in no mood <a href="https://x.com/ChrisKirschner/status/1906087992927670374" rel="noopener">to stick around</a> and answer questions about his performance. The new Brewers’ pitcher left Yankee Stadium without meeting with reporters, per The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner on X.</p><p>It’s hard to blame Cortes. In his Brewers debut he allowed eight runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts in two innings of work. And, notably, he gave up five home runs to his old team.</p><h2><b>Nestor Cortes has nightmare debut with Brewers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Nestor-Cortes.jpg"><figcaption>Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The outing went bad for Cortes right off the bat. He started the game off by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-judge-new-york-home-runs-nestor-cortes">giving up three straight home runs</a> on three consecutive pitches. Paul Goldschmidt hammered a 90 mph four-seam fastball to left center. Then Cody Bellinger deposited another 90 mph fastball over the fence in right center. And finally, reigning MVP Aaron Judge mashed an 88 mph cutter 468 feet to left field.</p><p>Later in the first inning, Austin Wells drilled a two-out homer to left center giving the Yankees a 4-0 lead off four solo dingers. Cortes took the mound in the second hoping to settle down and give the Brewers some innings but he surrendered a three-run shot to Anthony Volpe before finally retiring the side.</p><p>Cortes came back out to start the third inning but after issuing a leadoff walk, he was taken out of the game. He departed with New York up 7-3. But the Yankees were just getting started.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-judges-3rd-hr-vs-brewers-has-fans-going-wild">Judge had three home runs on the day</a> as he terrorized Brewers’ pitchers, going 4-6 with eight RBI and four runs scored. Jazz Chisholm Jr. joined the home run derby in the third inning and Oswald Peraza went deep in the seventh.</p><p>Cortes spent five seasons with the Yankees, making the All-Star Game in 2022. However, he was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-milwaukee-gm-eases-nestor-cortes-injury-concerns-devin-williams-trade">traded to the Brewers</a> as part of the package that brought closer Devin Williams to New York this offseason.</p><p>While his debut with Milwaukee was a disaster, he wasn’t the only Brewers pitcher who struggled against the Yankees Saturday. But, not everybody can do that.”</p><p>Cortes will take the hill for the first time with the Brewers on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. When he was introduced with Milwaukee’s pitchers on Opening Day, he got a solid hand from The Bronx faithful. But now, the lineup will face their old friend after an Opening Day victory.</p><p>On Opening Day, the Yankees entered the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead. That brought Williams in for his first appearance as a Bomber against his former team. He struggled, allowing a run and facing the tying run at the plate, but did secure the save. Now, the second member of the trade will toe the slab in the series.</p><h2><b>The Brewers need healthy years from Christian Yelich and Nestor Cortes</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Christian-Yelich-with-Milwaukee-Brewers.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. It was one of the first times Yelich faced live pitching since July. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-rumors-how-christian-yelich-injury-will-impact-brewers-trade-deadline-strategy">left the Brewers’ game against the Cubs on July 23 and never returned</a>. After surgery, he is back in the lineup.</p><p>The Brewers still made the playoffs without Yelich last year but were bounced by the New York Mets. They lost Williams and shortstop Willy Adames from the roster and did not do much to replace them. That has fans’ expectations high in the Windy City as they look to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020. But in his preseason predictions, ESPN insider Jeff Passan does not have the Cubs winning the NL Central. He <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44389786/mlb-2025-predictions-playoffs-world-series-mvp-rookie-year-cy-young" rel="noopener">explains why the</a> Milwaukee Brewers will win the division this season.</p><p>“Because the difference between the two talentwise is pretty negligible, and I like teams that have won recently. It’s true the Brewers did not spend any money this winter and were raided in free agency,” Passan wrote.</p><p>“It’s also true that Jackson Chourio is on the verge of becoming one of the best players in baseball, and the Brewers’ farm system consistently produces quality big leaguers — enough to send them to the postseason five times in the past six full seasons. The Cubs are better on paper, sure, but they haven’t played as much postseason baseball recently. That said, would it surprise me if the Cubs won the division? Not at all, because it’s the NL Central, and just about anything can happen.”</p><p>The Brewers have not had success in those playoff games but have had incredible regular-season success in recent years. Plus, the Brewers lost shortstop Willy Adames and closer Devin Williams from their 93-win team from last year.</p><p>The Reds and Pirates are trying to power out of lengthy rebuilds and could challenge for National League playoff spots. They are not easy wins like they have been in the past. Whether the Cubs or Brewers can get to Paul Skenes or silence Elly De La Cruz may determine the division this year.</p><p>The Cubs did not have great starting pitching last year and did not do much to improve it this offseason. They<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cody-bellinger-trade-grades-yankees-cubs"> picked up career minor-league Cody Poteet in the Cody Bellinger trade</a>. And they signed former Brewers pitcher Collin Rea. If those guys succeed in Chicago with Milwaukee’s pitching factory across the division, they can finally return to the playoffs.</p><p>The Cubs start their American season in Arizona against the Diamondbacks. While their roster is already very talented, the ball club added an intriguing piece on Friday in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.</p><p>The Royals<a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1903242646409138505" rel="noopener"> have acquired</a> utility man Mark Canha, as reported by insider Jon Heyman. The Brew Crew received a player to be named later and cash in return.</p><p>Canha was on a minor league deal with Milwaukee in spring training but he was struggling offensively, going just 2 for 23 at the dish. However, he had a respectable 2024 campaign, splitting time with the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants. Canha is a 10-year big league veteran who can a variety of positions. He’s spent time in the outfield and even at first base.</p><p>The 36-year-old hit .242 last season with seven home runs and 42 RBI across 125 games. Canha will be a bench player for the Royals and while there’s no guarantee he’ll get a ton of playing time, he will be on the MLB roster. Kansas City does need another right-handed bat off their bench who can swing it relatively well against lefties.</p><p>Plus, the Royals are a young team. Canha brings experience and leadership to the table. That’s very important for any ball club looking to contend. This could end up being an under-the-radar move for KC.</p><p>They went 86-76 in ’24, making it to the ALDS <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/3-royals-most-blame-alds-loss-yankees">before losing to the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series</a>. The Mets went on to win that game and the series. The Brewers made some changes this offseason, trading Devin Williams to the New York Yankees. General Manager Matt Arnold is confident in the decision to trade Williams this offseason.</p><p>“Any time you’re making those types of moves, messaging is super important — especially in the clubhouse, because these guys are the fabric of your team,” Arnold told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. “In a lot of ways, it actually can be a bet on the players that are still currently there.</p><p>Arnold continues, “It’s not, ‘Hey, I don’t believe in these guys.’ It actually might mean that you believe more in some other guys [who] want and deserve that opportunity to move into that type of role. I don’t look at it always as a negative; a lot of times it’s an opportunity for young players to grow.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/grading-giants-182-million-willy-adames-contract">Brewers also lost Willy Adames this offseason</a>. Adames and Williams were key, but Jackson Churio and William Contreras are still there to lead the team. They have a keen eye for untapped potential, getting the most out of Tobias Myers and Brice Turang last year.</p><p>The Brewers are the small-market team that gives hope to the rest of the small-market fans in the league. With Churio and Christian Yelich on big-money deals, they have surrounded them with great, young talent. There are playoff demons they have to beat but the regular season has been great to them recently.</p><p>The Brewers did not sign anyone to replace Williams or Adames this offseason. They trust their development system to fill those important positions and get into the playoffs this season. But the NL Central is improving, namely the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-news-cubs-astros-both-earn-praise-for-kyle-tucker-trade">Cubs who added Kyle Tucker</a>. The Reds and Pirates have great young talent as well, which could cut into the Brewers’ cushion in the NL Central.</p><p>Who will be the rising stars for the Brewers this season? After missing the final portion of the 2024 campaign, Yelich is hoping to bounce back in 2025. It seems to work as a reset button following the offseason.</p><p>The 33-year-old was once regarded as one of the best players in MLB. He made back-to-back All-Star teams in 2018 and 2019, winning the 2018 National League MVP Award and finishing second in NL MVP voting in 2019. He has dealt with injuries and underperformance in recent seasons, however. In 2024, the Brewers outfielder did earn his third career All-Star selection but was limited to 73 games after his season came to an early end following the aforementioned injury.</p><p>When healthy, what kind of player does Yelich believe he can be at this point in his career?</p><p>“I still think I can play at a pretty high level,” Yelich said. “I feel like I was playing at a pretty high level last year up until I got hurt. Which was unfortunate… That’s how it goes sometimes. I still think I can do it at a high level. After signing a one-year, $4.25 million deal with a mutual option for 2026, the 36-year-old is <a href="https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/03/brewers-to-sign-jose-quintana.html" rel="noopener">set to bolster</a> the Brewers starting rotation as the team deals with early-season injury concerns.</p><p>“I’m so excited to be a part of this group,” Quintana said. “It’s a lot of younger guys, and right away I feel that energy. Now I understand, after just a couple of days here, why they win. It’s a new journey for me, and I’m excited for the next chapter of my career.”</p><p>The Brewers pitching staff has already taken some early hits, with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/brewers-news-brandon-woodruff-reveals-next-step-amid-injury-recovery">Brandon Woodruff still recovering from shoulder surgery</a>, DL Hall landing on the 60-day injured list with a left lat strain, and Aaron Ashby dealing with an oblique injury. We have more depth now.”</p><p>Christian Yelich also emphasized how Quintana’s presence brings an extra boost to the team. “It energizes the team,” Yelich said. “We like the guys that we have, and we have a good team. But any time you can add someone that has done the things that José has done in this league, it energizes the group.”</p><p>Quintana is coming off a strong season with the New York Mets, where he posted a 3.75 ERA across 31 starts and 170 1/3 innings. While his 2024 campaign got off to a slow start, he turned things around after June 15, going 9-5 with a stellar 2.77 ERA the rest of the way.</p><p>Former teammate Mark Canha, now a non-roster invitee with the Brewers, praised Quintana’s consistency. “He’s such a solid starting pitcher to have,” Canha said. “It’s kind of a shock that it took this long for somebody to go grab him because he’s such a solid piece.” Quintana’s success against the Brewers over the years also played a role in his decision to join Milwaukee. In 23 career appearances (22 starts) against the club, he has posted a 2.98 ERA across 130 innings.</p><p>“I had a couple of options, but I pitch pretty well against the Central division, and I know this division well,” Quintana said. “I really like this [Brewers] group. I saw how electric they are and how hungry they are.”</p><p>The Brewers’ rotation will look even stronger when Woodruff eventually returns, giving the team another valuable arm for a playoff push. Until then, Quintana will provide stability and innings while mentoring younger pitchers.</p><p>“He’s so level-headed,” Canha said. “He puts his head down and goes to work every day. While<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mets-news-pete-alonso-clutch-home-run-brewers"> Pete Alonso’s home-run off of Devin Williams</a> is the prevailing memory, Jose Quintana was a big part of that New York win. After goingall winter unsigned, Quintana now has a new home. The Brewers have signed Jose Quintana <a href="https://x.com/ByRobertMurray/status/1896637782971621750" rel="noopener">to improve their</a> pitching depth, per Robert Murray from FanSided.</p><p>“Free-agent pitcher Jose Quintana and the Milwaukee Brewers are in agreement on a one-year contract, according to sources familiar with the deal,” Murray reported.</p><p>Quintana spent the last two seasons with the Mets, pitching to a 3.70 ERA over 44 starts. His best start came in Milwaukee last October, pitching six shutout innings, allowing four hits with five strikeouts. The Brewers have had a quiet offseason, as many of their offseasons are. But additions like Quintana are the ones that keep them in the playoff conversation year after year.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/brewers-news-frankie-montas-excited-after-trade-reds">Brewers lost Frankie Montas, who they traded for mid-season</a> when he signed with the Mets this offseason. Quintana and Nestor Cortes Jr, who they got when they traded Williams, will be key in replacing his production. Freddy Peralta, Aaron Civales, Tobias Meyers, and Brandon Woodruff make up the other legs of the rotation.</p><p>Quintana had some of the best years of his career with the Mets under president David Stearns. He came over from the Brewers, bringing over a pitching development system that has dominated the NL Central for years. While Milwaukee is deep into spring training, he should hit the ground running because of his familiarity with the system.</p><p>The NL Central will not be the weak division it has been in the past in 2025. The Pirates have a dominant pitching staff, the Reds have young stars blossoming, and the Cubs improved this offseason. Eppler is <a href="https://x.com/martinonyc/status/1896295712914371026" rel="noopener">moving to a front office position</a> with the Milwaukee Brewers, per SNY TV. Eppler is set to become a special advisor in scouting and baseball operations for Milwaukee.</p><p>Eppler served as GM of the Mets from 2021 to 2023. After he left the team, the Mets made the NLCS in 2024. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mets-news-billy-epplers-resignation-sudden-mlb-investigation">Eppler resigned from the Mets following a probe</a> into how the team managed its injured list.</p><p>Major League Baseball ruled that Eppler and the Mets violated injured list protocols. Due to the probe, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mets-news-ex-gm-billy-eppler-placed-ineligible-list-2024-season-rule-violations">Eppler couldn’t work for a team during the 2024 season</a>. The former general manager will look to get a fresh start with a Brewers team who won the NL Central in 2024.</p><p>Eppler also worked as general manager of the Los Angeles Angels from 2015-2020. He was part of the front office team that brought in Shohei Ohtani. The team lost in the postseason to the Mets, Eppler’s old team.</p><p>Eppler’s leadership in New York brought some success despite the injured list scandal. New York made the postseason in 2022 under Eppler, and he helped lay the groundwork for the 2024 NLCS roster. He didn’t make a playoff appearance during his tenure with the Angels.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/brewers-christian-yelich-expects-to-be-ready-for-opening-day">The Brewers are getting some good news this Spring Training</a>. Outfielder Christian Yelich returned to the field for the team. He had been sidelined since<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44071282/brewers-yelich-plays-first-back-surgery" rel="noopener"> having back surgery</a>.</p><p>“It was just cool to be out there, honestly, because it’s a long road from the last time I did it,” Yelich said, per the Associated Press. “Honestly, that was a victory in itself for me today.”</p><p>Yelich expects to be able to play when the season starts. That’s big news for the Brewers, who lost Willy Adames to San Francisco this past offseason. Yelich got a chance to shake off the rust on Saturday in a spring game.</p><p>“I honestly didn’t care what the results were at all,” Yelich added. “Just find out where you’re at and go from there. I thought there were some good things, some things that weren’t too good. But it was basically how I expected it to be, and my body felt good. However, the team lost star left fielder Christian Yelich to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-christian-yelich-dealt-brutal-injury-update-amid-back-concern" rel="noopener">season-ending back injury</a> in July. Ultimately, the Brewers fell to the New York Mets in the Wild Card round, dropping their sixth straight postseason series.</p><p>Yelich would miss 89 regular season games in 2024. The 13th-year veteran entered spring training hoping to be ready for the Brewers’ season opener in 2025. So far, the 33-year-old former league MVP is <a href="https://x.com/Todd_Rosiak/status/1895957366048436235" rel="noopener">on schedule</a>.</p><p>“I feel good. Just being out there’s a win. It’s a long road back from that kind of stuff. Dealing with the rehab process, I was just trying to get back out there. So I was happy with that. Just nice to be back in the game. Now he’s working his way into form, taking the field for the first time in over seven months.</p><p>“It was basically how I expected it to be and my body felt good. That was pretty much the biggest concern of the day… Physically I feel good and I think that’s the most important thing,” Yelich said.</p><p>“The procedure went good and the rehab process was relatively smooth… and all the baseball progressions have been pretty good, there haven’t been any setbacks or anything. This was kinda the date that was targeted for a while and there were no hiccups getting to today so it was good,” he added.</p><p>Yelich came to Brewers’ camp with the expectation of being <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-christian-yelich-expects-to-be-ready-for-opening-day" rel="noopener">ready for Opening Day</a>. So far, after testing out his surgically repaired back, he feels confident that he can hit the ground running.</p><p>While the Brewers should have Yelich back anchoring the lineup, switch-hitting center fielder Blake Perkins will miss some time with an injury. Milwaukee’s third-year outfielder <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-milwaukee-loses-blake-perkins-fractured-shin" rel="noopener">suffered a shin fracture</a> that will keep him sidelined for at least the first month of the 2025 season.</p><p>As for Yelich, he’s continuing to grind it out in spring training but he’s grateful to be back on the field. “Now it’s just repping it out really. It’s been a long time since I played. And it was just cool to be out there honestly because it’s a long road from the last time that I did it. This franchise needs stability. Fortunately, Brandon Woodruff remains on the roster.</p><p>The veteran right-handed starting pitcher is still recovering from shoulder surgery that he underwent in 2023 to repair the anterior capsule in his throwing shoulder, but <a href="https://x.com/AdamMcCalvy/status/1895511438502031491" rel="noopener">he is making key progress</a>.</p><p>“Brandon Woodruff said yesterday’s live {batting practice] was another good day,” MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy reported. “Barring any setbacks he expects his next one to be multiple ‘innings,’ representing another test in his build-up.”</p><h2><b>What can Brandon Woodruff do for the Brewers this season?</b></h2><p>Assuming the 32-year-old can return at some point in the first half of the 2025 MLB campaign, he can give the Brewers crucial balance. Milwaukee has experienced significant changes of late. There are young, talented players all throughout the roster, but a seasoned hurler like Woodruff can offer tremendous value, both on the mound and in the clubhouse.</p><p>The two-time All-Star is 46-26 with a 3.10 ERA, 788 strikeouts and 1.045 WHIP in 680 1/3 innings pitched. He has helped the Brewers win many games during his seven-year career and is surely eager to do so again after missing all of 2024.</p><p>Milwaukee’s starting pitching rotation held up in the absences of both Corbin Burnes and Brandon Woodruff last season, with stalwart Freddy Peralta, rookie Tobias Myers and trade acquisition Aaron Civale cinching the unit together. 2022 All-Star Nestor Cortes will join the group, and the fifth spot could be up for grabs. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-pat-murphy-makes-franchise-history-winning-nl-manager-of-year">National League Manager of the Year Pat Murphy</a> will ask what he can of them, but hopefully reinforcements soon arrive.</p><p>Woodruff’s timetable for return is unclear, but it is encouraging to know that his shoulder is responding well to the live BP. The former 11th-round draft pick is seeking to defy the odds once more and prove again that he is one of the most consistent starters in baseball today. Right-handed pitcher J.B. Bukauskas <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/brewers/2025/02/26/brewers-pitcher-jb-bukauskas-to-have-season-ending-surgery/80524338007/" rel="noopener">will miss the entire 2025 season</a> after undergoing lat surgery. The recovery time for the procedure is at least nine months, and this is just the latest injury-related setback for the 28-year-old.</p><p>“It sounds weird but I’m excited,” said Bukauskas, via Todd Rosiak of USA Today. “I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and finally get it fixed.”</p><p>Bukauskas missed the whole 2022 season with a Teres major muscle strain, and he also missed time in 2023 with a cervical strain. In mid-April of 2024, the Brewers placed Bukauskas on the injured list with a right lat strain that ultimately shelved him for the rest of the season.</p><p>The Houston Astros drafted Bukauskas out of the University of North Carolina in the first round of the 2017 MLB Draft. Bukauskas made his Major League debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021. The right-hander had a cup of coffee with the Seattle Mariners in 2023 before joining Milwaukee.</p><p>Across his 33 relief appearances in the big leagues, scattered over three seasons with as many clubs, the Ashburn, VA native logged 30 innings with a 4.74 FIP and 27 strikeouts. The Brewers used Bukauskas in six games in 2024 before his lat injury flared up.</p><p>The Brewers’ starting rotation is pretty solid overall. Headlined by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-freddy-peralta-opening-day-starter">Brewers Opening Day starter Freddy Peralta</a>, the rotation also features Tobias Myers, Nestor Cortes, Aaron Civale, and Aaron Ashby.</p><p>Milwaukee has tweaked their bullpen significantly over the winter. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-new-york-devin-williams-brewers-trade">Brewers traded closer Devin Williams to the New York Yankees</a> in one of the biggest trades of the offseason. Lefty Tyler Alexander signed with the club as well.
