Vibes have been high as the Athletics played their final games in the Oakland Coliseum, taking two of three games against the Texas Rangers. They’re behind 4-6 in the season series against Seattle, so a sweep here could earn them bragging rights over their divisional rivals. Despite their record, the Athletics hit for a better team average (.234) and have recorded more hits (1245) than their opponents. It’ll take a solid day from the plate to keep up with the high-scoring Mariners.</p><p>The Athletics will send Joey Estes to the mound for start twenty-four. With just a 7-9 overall record, most of his success has come at home where he posts a respectable 3.26 ERA and 4-3 record. His numbers on the road, however, take a serious dip at a 7.03 ERA and .309 OBA. The Mariners are currently hot from the plate, so Estes will have to remain in control and not let this game get out of hand by putting runners on the bags. On the road, they can’t like their chances for a comeback effort.</p><h2><b>Why The Mariners Will Cover The Spread/Win</b></h2><p>The Seattle Mariners will fail to make the Postseason for the second-straight year and they weren’t able to reach previous years’ mark of 90 wins. They just recently fell out of Wild Card contention, falling behind the Minnesota Twins. Still, they finished second in a rather open AL West race, so they’ll have something to build off of in the upcoming offseason. Julio Rodriguez is once again finishing the season at the club’s top hitter, but they’ll be looking to add more pieces around him when they look to rebuild the roster through free agency and the draft. Their pitching saw a begin decline from previous seasons and they’ll be looking to add reinforcements to the bullpen as well.</p><p>The Mariners will send Emerson Hancock to the mound for his fifteenth start of the season. His team has notched wins in his last two starts despite him giving up five runs through 10 innings of work. He’s not typically one to post high strikeout numbers and he’s more of a ground ball pitcher, but the Mariners have a solid defense behind him and can make plays to force the outs. They’ve won two-straight games heading into this one and while their pitching staff has been thin to end the season, they were able to shut the A’s out in the opening game of this series. Expect their recent momentum to keep rolling in this one.</p><h2><b>Final Athletics-Mariners Prediction &amp; Pick</b></h2><p>The Athletics and Mariners will meet again following Seattle’s most recent 2-0 win. Wins have been hard to come by for the Athletics this season, but they’ve done a great job in improving from last year’s forgettable mark and giving fans something to cheer for during this season. JJ Bleday was the star of the game with a go-ahead RBI single and a miraculous catch in center field at key points of the game. Their spirits are high at the moment and they’ll be looking to carry that same momentum into this final series.</p><p>The Athletics will send JP Sears to the mound for his thirty-second start of the season. The Athletics have notched wins in two of his last five starts, but he’s hoping to break this current two-game losing streak he’s been on. He’s allowed 10 runs over his last two starts, but he’s also managed 10 strikeouts in the same breath and can turn in a promising start here if he doesn’t let the Mariners offense get out in front of him. Expect him to take this start deep into the game as he hopes to finish his season on a high note.</p><h2><b>Why The Mariners Will Cover The Spread/Win</b></h2><p>The Seattle Mariners are currently three games out of the final AL Wild Card spot and they’ll look for another series win against a divisional opponent to end the season on a positive note. While the Mariners have been up and down this season, they’ve found ways to string together wins and keep their winning record at five games over .500. They’ve won five of their last seven games including taking two of three from the Houston Astros during their most recent series. They won their last game against Houston 8-1 as their bats were firing on all cylinders, so expect them to have a similar momentum during this game.</p><p>While we’re still waiting on the Mariners to announce a pitcher for this matchup, they’re likely to send either Logan Gilbert or Bryce Miller to the mound given George Kirby turning in the last start. The Athletics (69-90) have a chance to win more than 20 games than they did last season, providing the city with some solace and hope before they transition to their new and likely temporary home in 2025.</p><p>Mark Kotsay played in Oakland for four seasons and has been the team’s manager since 2022. His affinity for the Oakland Coliseum runs deep. He knows the misery that this departure is leaving in its wake and can only do his best to make sure that the fans are recognized for their loyalty and passion.</p><p>They have put up with a lot over the years, but many continued to embrace the Athletics as a key part of the city’s identity even when attendance rates indicated otherwise. The city has experienced four World Series celebrations and countless other memories for more than half a century. Saying goodbye is understandably painful.</p><p>That feeling clearly extends to Kotsay and the ballclub as well, though. As a result, the team is planning to play in Sacramento until their permanent home is ready. The stadium in that California city is a minor league facility, and critics of Fisher have bashed the owner for multiple aspects of the move.</p><p>Long-time fans are unhappy that the A’s are leaving Oakland and they are also angry that the team will not be playing in a major league facility in the next few years. There are also details of the new stadium in Las Vegas that have not been finalized at this point.</p><p>Major league insider Jeff Passan voiced his issues with the team’s decision to leave Oakland with a statement on X.</p><p>“The Oakland A’s were killed by greed,” <a href="https://x.com/JeffPassan/status/1839434404843966845">Passan said</a>. “Do not allow the people responsible for this to spin it any other way. John Fisher did not have to move this team. Major League Baseball and its owners did not need to be complicit in it. This was a choice. A wrong one. Fans chanted “Sell the team” throughout the game and mixed those chants with “Let’s go Oakland” as the game progressed.</p><p>The team left Kansas City after the 1967 season and relocated to Oakland for the 1968 season. They shared the Oakland Coliseum with the Oakland Raiders for years before the Raiders left first for Los Angeles and then later returned to Oakland. The Raiders played their final season in Oakland in 2019 before moving to Las Vegas.</p><p>Fisher has made public statements saying that he and the A’s ownership group had tried to come up with a permanent stadium in Oakland for years without success. The Athletics played at the Coliseum from 1968 to 2024, a long, long time. The stadium opened in 1966 as the home of the Oakland Raiders, and two years later, it started hosting A’s games.</p><p>There was no shortage of history there, too. Despite the lack of fans and rundown facilities in the past years, once upon a time, the Coliseum was a hit. Oakland made three World Series appearances between 1967 and 1976 with the A’s winning it all in back-to-back-to-back years in ’72, ’73, and ’74.</p><p>It’s extremely sad that the city of Oakland has now lost both of its major sports teams to Vegas. A’s fans and Raiders fans were known as some of the most loyal in all of sports, and now they have to watch from afar. The Athletics improved to 68-90 with Thursday’s victory and will begin a three-game set with the Seattle Mariners on Friday to finish out the regular season.</p><p>So long to the Oakland Coliseum. I still don’t believe it.”</p><p>“I played a lot of Major League Baseball here, apparently more than anybody in the league right now,” Semien continued. “I worked out in this weight room, developed myself into a major league player here. So that’s the part that really stings.</p><p>“I’m sure when the games over [Thursday], and take the bus out of here, it’ll really hit me,” Semien concluded. “There’s a lot of emotion for me. This place is really special for me. They gave me an opportunity here.”</p><p>Semien helped lead the A’s into the playoffs his final three seasons with the team. They lost in the Wild Card round the first two campaigns, but advanced to the ALDS in 2020. That was, and will be, the final time Oakland played postseason baseball.</p><p>The Rangers are joining the Athletics in taking an early vacation this year. Still, Marcus Semien wants Texas to win as many games as possible. After moving to the Bay Area in 1968, the team is now on the move once again.</p><p>While things haven’t been bright with the A’s recently, they come with a storied history. Ultimately, they’re hoping they can get healthy this offseason and once again return to their dominant form from a year ago.</p><p>The Rangers will send Nathan Eovaldi to the mound for this one as he tries to finish his season strong and with a winning record. He’s already clocked one start against this Athletics team early in the season where he couldn’t find the win at home. Now, he visits the opposing ballpark with a 4-5 record on the road this season and hoping to notch another win. The Rangers have won in four of his last five appearances and given their success over Oakland this season, Eovaldi will be primed for yet another successful start.</p><h2><b>Why The Athletics Will Cover The Spread/Win</b></h2><p>The Oakland Athletics are currently fourth in the AL West and it looks as though they’ll be avoiding a last-place finish this season after notching the worst record in the MLB a year ago. Notching 67 wins on the year thus far, they’ve certainly improved from their 50-112 mark from a year ago and they’ve managed four wins against this Rangers team this season. The season series stands at 4-6 in Texas’ favor, but the Athletics have seen success scratching runs across the plate and putting up respectable totals against the Rangers’ starters. You have destroyed your family’s great name and legacy because of your cheapness,” Beil said on air, directing his comments directly into the camera at Fisher.</p><p>Beil criticized Fisher’s proposals to keep the team in Oakland. The Athletics are preparing for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/athletics-news-make-plans-potential-fan-violence-final-coliseum-game">potential fan violence</a> on Thursday, when the team plays its final home game. The A’s had another disappointing season in 2024, holding a 67-89 going into Tuesday’s games.</p><p>Beil wasn’t afraid to take as many parting shots at Fisher as he could, in his on-camera monologue.</p><p>“John, you surround yourself with incompetent yes men, and because you were born into a billionaire family, apparently never learned you have to spend money to make money,” Beil added.</p><p>This isn’t the first time the anchor has gone off on the air. Beil went on another tirade months ago when it was announced Stanford and California were leaving the Pac-12 to go to the ACC. The anchor bemoaned the fact that conference realignment was ending regional rivalry games in college sports.</p><p>Beil made plenty of fans with his tirade against Fisher. The YouTube video of his news report received dozens of positive comments on the site.</p><p>“Thank You Larry Beil! This is how we all feel!” one YouTube comment read. The franchise previously played in Kansas City and Philadelphia.</p><p>The team’s latest destination is Las Vegas. That city <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/athletics-news-ex-oakland-manager-bob-melvin-breaks-silence-on-sacramento-move">is not yet ready</a> for the team, so the Athletics will play for awhile in Sacramento. California’s capitol city will host the Athletics for at least three seasons, as Las Vegas prepares for the franchise’s arrival.</p><p>“This isn’t really new for us,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said. “But the emotion last year was a lot greater in terms of the anger. This year has been really, really calm, and I don’t know if that’s because they’ve gotten the anger out. There’s still going to be that emotion as we near Thursday, but that’s part of whenever the healing process starts.”</p><p>The Athletics have seen poor attendance ratings this season. A reason for that is the team’s play. Oakland holds one of the worst records in baseball, with a 67-88 mark. It seems the city is letting go of the team in their own way.</p><p>The franchise plays the New York Yankees on Sunday.
