This year the New York Yankees captain is chasing the triple crown while leading the league in walks, with an MLB-high 18 intentional bases on balls.</p><p>Judge’s prodigious power combined with his plate discipline has drawn comparisons to Barry Bonds, who set the power/discipline standard. Bonds had an absurd 11 percent home run rate and 26.7 percent walk rate in his record-shattering 73-home run 2001 campaign. Judge isn’t quite at that level with 8.1 and 15.2 percent rates respectively. But his <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6461328/2025/06/30/aaron-judge-swing-rate-yankees/" rel="noopener">approach reminds</a> Yankees bench coach Brad Ausmus of the San Francisco Giants great.</p><p>“Barry knew exactly when it was on the plate, when it was too high, when it was too in. Judge is very, very similar to that… I didn’t realize how much he controlled the strike zone. He really, really controls it. After a scorching-hot start to the season, Judge was on pace to top Bonds’ all-time record of 244 weighted runs created plus (wRC+), set in 2002. In mid May, the Yankees’ slugger had a mind-blowing 254 wRC+. He’s dropped off since then but still is at an incredible 221 wRC+, which would be the best of his career.</p><p>While Judge has drawn comparisons to Bonds during yet another dominant season, the two players are quite different in one aspect. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-judge-surprised-reaction-eye-opening-trend">Judge is swinging away this season</a>. He’s produced the highest swing rate of his career, hacking away at 46.4 percent overall and producing a very un-Bondsian 24.5 percent chase rate.</p><p>Judge and the Yankees have struggled in June. New York had dominated the division all season but the team entered Sunday’s matchup against the Athletics with a just a 12-13 record this month.</p><p>And Judge saw his batting average drop more than 40 points over the first 25 games in June. Although they are still in first place in the AL East, it has been a rough June for the Bombers and Aaron Judge. While the team has posted a 6-10 record since June 13, Judge has a .203 batting average with only 12 hits. When Judge and Yankees manager Aaron Boone were told that the captain was swinging more often, they were surprised. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6461328/2025/06/30/aaron-judge-swing-rate-yankees/" rel="noopener">wrote about the trend</a> on Monday.</p><p>When informed of the various trends earlier this month, Judge seemed surprised. ‘What do you mean, ‘swinging more?’’ he asked. Your swing rate is higher. ‘Oh, it is?’ Judge replied, in a way that indicated he sincerely didn’t know. New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone had the same reaction when told Judge is swinging more. ‘He is?’ Boone asked,” Rosenthal outlined.</p><p>“Entering Sunday, when [Judge] hit his 29th and 30th homers of the season, his first-pitch swing rate (35.8 percent), in-zone swing rate (67.9 percent), chase rate (24.5 percent), and overall swing rate (46.4 percent) were all career-highs for a full season,” Rosenthal wrote.</p><p>The Yankees captain told him, “I usually don’t get too many pitches to hit. So if it’s going to be the first one, try to be ready. If it’s going to be the last one on a 3-2 count, try to be ready.’</p><p>The Yankees have struggled in the summer months in recent years, but hot springs have kept them afloat for the most part. Once the gate was opened, Yankees captain Aaron Judge broke them down with two homers. The second was Judge’s 3oth of the year, marking the fourth time he’s reached that plateau before the All-Star Break. According to Katie Strang of Stathead, that puts Judge and Mark McGwire <a href="https://x.com/SharpStats17/status/1939423862724399299" rel="noopener">alone together in the history books.</a></p><p>“Players to hit 30+ HR before the All-Star Break 4 times in a career: Aaron Judge. Mark McGwire,” Strang posted. It came in response to a post by WFAN’s Emmanuel Berbari, who <a href="https://x.com/BerbariOnAir/status/1939421557077725283" rel="noopener">outlined the four times</a> Judge has reached 30 before mid-July. “2017: 30, 2022: 33, 2024: 34, 2025: 30 (so far … ),” Berbari posted, in part.</p><p>The Yankees have gone cold offensively of late, and Judge has not been immune to that. From June 13 through Saturday, he was hitting .182 with a .690 OPS and just three homers. But a hot summer Sunday at the Stadium finally pushed Judge to 30. With 13 games to go before the All-Star Break, Judge could add to his total.</p><p>The Yankees are still atop the American League East despite their 6-10 record since June 13. But the Tampa Bay Rays have closed the gap considerably and end Sunday just 1.5 games back. And this will all change this week, when the Yankees visit the Blue Jays for four games. Toronto is three games back.</p><p>As Judge goes, the Yankees go. When he was hitting .392 to start the year, they were 42-25. As <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-judge-stat-alarming-new-york-trend">Judge struggled in Boston and beyond</a>, the team could not get off the ground. With big sets coming between now and the break, they hope Judge’s slump is over.</p><p>The Yankees visit the Blue Jays and Mets to start July, seven games that could change their entire season. He began the month hitting just under .400 but his average has dropped nearly 40 points over the last 23 games. Despite the lull, Judge still has a .950 OPS with 7 home runs and 13 RBI so far this month.</p><p>The Yankees have also tailed off in June. The team started the month in command of the division with a 5.5 game lead. But New York has lost nine of the last 13 games, including a six-game losing streak.
