They were <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/yankees-news-rob-manfred-breaks-silence-torpedo-bat-hubbub">swept by the New York Yankees, torpedo bats and all</a>, in a brutal performance. While they came back and won five of their next seven games, there are still reasons to be concerned. With an injury to Nestor Cortes Jr, only Freddy Peralta is still healthy from their projected rotation. The Brewers’ pitching rotation is a concern and could cost them in 2025.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-ex-yankees-all-star-injury-milwaukee-dire-straits">Cortes went on the 15-day injured list</a> with a flexor strain in his left elbow. This is the same injury that cut his regular season short with the Yankees last year. He did return for the playoffs but did not pitch until the World Series. He was on the hill when Freddie Freeman hit his iconic Game 1 grand slam. The Brewers traded for him because they needed starting pitching depth, but Cortes is already on the shelf.</p><p>The Brewers <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/roster-resource/depth-charts/brewers" rel="noopener">also have</a> Aaron Civale, Aaron Ashby, and Tobias Myers on the injured list. That is their entire rotation outside of Peralta, and it comes at a brutal time. They are hitting the road for two series against the Rockies and Diamondbacks that could knock them back in the National League standings.</p><p>When the Brewers go to Arizona, they may face their old ace, Corbin Burnes. They dealt Burnes to the Orioles before last season, knowing they could not afford his free agency contract. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/diamondbacks-news-corbin-burnes-shocking-210-million-contract-arizona">signed a $210 million deal with Arizona</a> and represents what the Brewers could be with higher spending.</p><p>If any team is prepared to have a rotation of lesser-known players, it is the Brewers. Their coaching practices have turned journeymen into aces for the last decade, and it must shine this year for them to return to the playoffs.</p><h2><b>The 2025 Brewers need a dominant offense</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Freddy-Peralta-with-Milwaukee-Brewers.jpg"><figcaption>Benny Sieu-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Great offensive play has not been the Brewers’ path to success during this era. They have been built on pitching, a great bullpen, and stifling defense. This year, they have the opportunity to dominate offensively with two great stars. Christian Yelich is back and healthy while Jackson Chourio blossoms into a star.</p><p>The Brewers traded closer Devin Williams this offseason, just like they traded Burnes and Josh Hader before him. They do not want to have players playing in walk years like they had Willy Adames last year. They got Cortes and infield prospect Caleb Durin in return. But that meant they needed to find a new closer, which they found right in their own bullpen.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-trevor-megill-blasts-yankees-torpedo-bats-made-history">Trevor Megill made headlines on the first weekend by crushing the Yankees</a> for using torpedo bats. Once everyone got over that, Megill settled into the closer role for the Brewers. He has one save already and has finished two games in his four appearances. Williams helped them win the division by ten games last year and set a high bar for Megill to clear.</p><p>All of those questions can be answered this season. But the Brewers’ starting pitching will be their Achilles heel. The Cortes injury is the last straw for a team hitting the road for two tough series. While the Rockies are not a strong team, playing in Colorado is never easy. And the Diamondbacks are a World Series contender.</p><p>Offensively, Chourio leads the way with nine RBIs. They are getting great starts from Sal Frelick and Brice Turang, and Jake Bauers has put together some nice at-bats off the bench. Those players will have to lead them through these injuries to their rotation for the next few weeks.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After they were<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/brewers-news-trevor-megill-blasts-yankees-torpedo-bats-made-history"> crushed by the New York Yankees to start</a>, they are 4-1 and back on track. But injuries have taken a toll, especially on their pitching rotation. When the Brewers put Nestor Cortes on the injured list Sunday, that left Freddy Peralta as the only projected starter in their rotation. Andrew Wagner of The Associated Press<a href="https://apnews.com/article/brewers-nestor-cortes-266ba435bf3b5ceed7cc3fe94af49b62" rel="noopener"> has more</a>.</p><p>“The Milwaukee Brewers placed left-hander Nestor Cortes on the 15-day injured list Sunday with a flexor strain in his left elbow, further depleting the team’s starting pitching,” Wagner wrote. “The loss of Cortes leaves the Brewers with Freddy Peralta as the only healthy pitcher among those projected to be in the five-man rotation this season.”</p><p>Part of the Brewers getting back on track was a great start from Cortes. He took the hill for the first time in Milwaukee on Friday and spun six innings of shutout ball, allowing only one hit. But now, he will miss multiple starts with an elbow issue.</p><p>Cortes came to the Brewers from the Yankees in the Devin Williams trade. While it is his first issue in Milwaukee, it his is not the first elbow issue that Cortes has had in recent months.</p><h2><b>The Brewers need a healthy Nestor Cortes moving forward</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Nestor-Cortes-with-Brewers.jpg"><figcaption>Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Last year, Cortes missed the final month of the regular season with the identical injury. He came back for the playoffs, but did not pitch in the first two rounds and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/dodgers-news-dave-roberts-reacts-freddie-freeman-kirk-gibson-moment">was the goat of the World Series</a>. The injury may have been part of the reason the Yankees dealt him this offseason, but they were targeting Williams to be their closer regardless.</p><p>The Brewers have Monday off before they head to Colorado to face the Rockies. That is where Cortes’ turn in the rotation will come up without him there. They called up reliever Grant Wolfram from AAA Nashville to take his roster spot, so we will see how they handle the next few turns of the rotation.</p><p>The Brewers have plenty of pitching issues already without Cortes’ injury to consider. Aaron Civale, Tobias Myers, and Aaron Ashby are all on the injured list already. While they are all on the 15-day IL, it is still inconvenient before a Western road trip. When days go like that, you kind of know at some point in the game that your name is gonna be called.”</p><p>Turang’s confidence won’t be too down after this one, not only because of the walk-off but because of his three-hit outing against the Royals in a win on Tuesday.</p><p>This victory moves both teams to 2-4 and gives the Brewers a 2-1 series win over Kansas City to start the week. They will now stay at home for a four-game set against the Cincinnati Reds, who will also come into Milwaukee at 2-4 on the young season.</p><p>Most of the positives in this game for the Brewers come from the mound. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/brewers-news-freddy-peralta-opening-day-starter-pat-murphy">Freddy Peralta pitched a gem</a> in his second start of the season, going eight full innings and allowing just two hits and one earned run. Peralta struck out eight batters before three bullpen arms entered and gave up just two hits in three innings. But I’m telling you, it’s the hitter, not the bat.”</p><p>Before Sunday’s 12-3 Yankees win, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-trevor-megill-blasts-yankees-torpedo-bats-made-history">Brewers reliever Trevor Megill made it clear</a> that he is not a fan of the torpedo bats, and said that MLB would let it slide because it is the Yankees. However, New York is not the only team to utilize these bats. Last year, Giancarlo Stanton and Jose Trevino used them, according to Phillips.</p><p>Now, Anthony Volpe and Jazz Chisholm Jr. were noticed as players using them, while Austin Wells is as well. Teams like the Minnesota Twins have been seen using this type of bat as well, and Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora has said that his team <a href="https://x.com/ChrisCotillo/status/1906432751085273144" rel="noopener">tried the bats in spring training</a>.</p><p>It will be interesting to track how the Yankees and other players perform with this type of bat, and if any more information comes out on how helpful they are. The Yankees will be tested in their next two games, starting with Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks with Corbin Burnes on the mound. Cortes was pulled after<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44468168/nestor-cortes-yankee-stadium-return-go-way-planned" rel="noopener"> allowing five total home runs</a> in just a few innings of work.</p><p>“It’s not a good feeling,” Cortes said, per ESPN. “So obviously didn’t go the way I planned.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/yankees-news-cody-bellinger-drops-best-admission-aaron-judge-3-hr-game">The Yankees annihilated the Brewers</a>, 20-9, behind nine home runs. Aaron Judge hit three of them, in one of the most memorable performances of his career.</p><p>Cortes played last season for the Yankees. So we just tried to go out there and be aggressive in our zone. ‘Goldy’ and ‘Belli’ set the table there and got things going. The Yankees are two games into the season, and they have scored 24 runs in those first two contests. The bulk of the scoring came in Saturday’s 20-9 beatdown against the Milwaukee Brewers. The new “torpedo” bats were working overtime in that one, and they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-russell-wilson-babe-ruth-home-runs-brewers">helped get the Yankees off to a fast start</a>. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-judge-new-york-home-runs-nestor-cortes">first three pitches that Yankees hitters saw</a> ended up in the seats. It was quickly 3-0, and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-fans-skeptical-ny-bats-9-hr-onslaught">Yankees ended up hitting nine home runs</a>. Yes, nine.</p><p>Yankees players are loving their new bats so far, but the Brewers haven’t been big fans. Trevor Megill was not one of the pitchers who had to face the scorching-hot New York lineup on Thursday, but he did <a href="https://x.com/snyyankees/status/1906396819799921007?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet" rel="noopener">have some comments</a> regarding the new bats.</p><p>“I think it’s terrible,” Trevor Megill said to the <i>New York Post</i>. “We’ll see what the data says. I’ve never seen anything like it before. I feel like it’s something used in slo-pitch softball. It’s genius: Put the mass all in one spot. It might be bush [league]. It might not be. But it’s the Yankees, so they’ll let it slide.”</p><p>So, what is it about <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6241862/2025/03/30/yankees-bats-aaron-leanhardt-marlins/" rel="noopener">these news bats</a> that’s different? They were invented by M.I.T. physicist Aaron Leanhardt, and centering the weight of the bat on the sweet spot is the trick.</p><p>“They’re going to point to a location on the bat that is probably six or seven inches down from the tip of the bat,” Leanhardt said, according to an article from <i>The New York Times</i>. “That’s where the sweet spot typically is. It’s just through those conversations where you think to yourself, why don’t we exchange how much wood we’re putting on the tip versus how much we’re putting in the sweet spot? That’s the original concept right there. Just try to take all that excess weight and try to put it where you’re trying to hit the ball and then in exchange try to take the thinner diameter that used to be at the sweet spot and put that on the tip.”</p><p>The Yankees were already known for being one of the best power-hitting teams in the league, and these new bats could elevate that strength to another level. The Yankees gave former teammate Nestor Cortes a rude welcome in his return to New York, running him from the game after just two innings.</p><p>Following the brutal beatdown, Cortes was in no mood <a href="https://x.com/ChrisKirschner/status/1906087992927670374" rel="noopener">to stick around</a> and answer questions about his performance. The new Brewers’ pitcher left Yankee Stadium without meeting with reporters, per The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner on X.</p><p>It’s hard to blame Cortes. In his Brewers debut he allowed eight runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts in two innings of work. And, notably, he gave up five home runs to his old team.</p><h2><b>Nestor Cortes has nightmare debut with Brewers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Nestor-Cortes.jpg"><figcaption>Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The outing went bad for Cortes right off the bat. He started the game off by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-judge-new-york-home-runs-nestor-cortes">giving up three straight home runs</a> on three consecutive pitches. Paul Goldschmidt hammered a 90 mph four-seam fastball to left center. Then Cody Bellinger deposited another 90 mph fastball over the fence in right center. And finally, reigning MVP Aaron Judge mashed an 88 mph cutter 468 feet to left field.</p><p>Later in the first inning, Austin Wells drilled a two-out homer to left center giving the Yankees a 4-0 lead off four solo dingers. Cortes took the mound in the second hoping to settle down and give the Brewers some innings but he surrendered a three-run shot to Anthony Volpe before finally retiring the side.</p><p>Cortes came back out to start the third inning but after issuing a leadoff walk, he was taken out of the game. He departed with New York up 7-3. But the Yankees were just getting started.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-judges-3rd-hr-vs-brewers-has-fans-going-wild">Judge had three home runs on the day</a> as he terrorized Brewers’ pitchers, going 4-6 with eight RBI and four runs scored. Jazz Chisholm Jr. joined the home run derby in the third inning and Oswald Peraza went deep in the seventh.</p><p>Cortes spent five seasons with the Yankees, making the All-Star Game in 2022. However, he was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-milwaukee-gm-eases-nestor-cortes-injury-concerns-devin-williams-trade">traded to the Brewers</a> as part of the package that brought closer Devin Williams to New York this offseason.</p><p>While his debut with Milwaukee was a disaster, he wasn’t the only Brewers pitcher who struggled against the Yankees Saturday. But, not everybody can do that.”</p><p>Cortes will take the hill for the first time with the Brewers on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. When he was introduced with Milwaukee’s pitchers on Opening Day, he got a solid hand from The Bronx faithful. But now, the lineup will face their old friend after an Opening Day victory.</p><p>On Opening Day, the Yankees entered the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead. That brought Williams in for his first appearance as a Bomber against his former team. He struggled, allowing a run and facing the tying run at the plate, but did secure the save. Now, the second member of the trade will toe the slab in the series.</p><h2><b>The Brewers need healthy years from Christian Yelich and Nestor Cortes</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Christian-Yelich-with-Milwaukee-Brewers.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Yelich told McCalvy he was grateful that Cortes didn’t dish out any wild windups in his first bullpen against him. It was one of the first times Yelich faced live pitching since July. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-rumors-how-christian-yelich-injury-will-impact-brewers-trade-deadline-strategy">left the Brewers’ game against the Cubs on July 23 and never returned</a>. After surgery, he is back in the lineup.</p><p>The Brewers still made the playoffs without Yelich last year but were bounced by the New York Mets. They lost Williams and shortstop Willy Adames from the roster and did not do much to replace them. But that has been the story of the Brewers in recent years, as they can replace talent with young prospects very well.</p><p>But without Adames and Williams, they have taken a step back on paper. In the same offseason, the Cubs made the biggest trade of the winter. Kyle Tucker is in a contract year and should dominate the division from the Windy City. Second-year catcher <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-austin-wells-ny-fans-frenzy-leadoff-hr-opening-day">Austin Wells belted a leadoff home run</a>, putting New York on the board early and the team carried a 4-1 lead into the ninth inning.</p><p>It was the perfect opportunity for the Yankees to bring in their new closer, former Brewer Devin Williams. However, Williams was shaky in his Bronx debut. He gave up a run on two hits, with a walk and two strikeouts.</p><p>Although Williams ultimately earned the save, it was an inauspicious start to his Yankees career. After the game, he was asked <a href="https://x.com/snyyankees/status/1905397543871078861" rel="noopener">how he overcame</a> the rocky start in the ninth inning.</p><p>“You know, just staying focused on the next pitch, you can’t go back in time. The Brewers pushed a run across with a Brice Turang sacrifice fly that made it 4-2 and the team was set up with runners at second and third with one out.</p><p>But then, with the tying run at second, Williams seemed to settle down. Facing Milwaukee’s two best hitters, the Yankees’ closer pitched himself out of a jam. Plus, the Brewers lost shortstop Willy Adames and closer Devin Williams from their 93-win team from last year.</p><p>The Reds and Pirates are trying to power out of lengthy rebuilds and could challenge for National League playoff spots. They are not easy wins like they have been in the past. Whether the Cubs or Brewers can get to Paul Skenes or silence Elly De La Cruz may determine the division this year.</p><p>The Cubs did not have great starting pitching last year and did not do much to improve it this offseason. While their roster is already very talented, the ball club added an intriguing piece on Friday in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers.</p><p>The Royals<a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1903242646409138505" rel="noopener"> have acquired</a> utility man Mark Canha, as reported by insider Jon Heyman. The Brew Crew received a player to be named later and cash in return.</p><p>Canha was on a minor league deal with Milwaukee in spring training but he was struggling offensively, going just 2 for 23 at the dish. However, he had a respectable 2024 campaign, splitting time with the Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants. Canha is a 10-year big league veteran who can a variety of positions. He’s spent time in the outfield and even at first base.</p><p>The 36-year-old hit .242 last season with seven home runs and 42 RBI across 125 games. Canha will be a bench player for the Royals and while there’s no guarantee he’ll get a ton of playing time, he will be on the MLB roster. Kansas City does need another right-handed bat off their bench who can swing it relatively well against lefties.</p><p>Plus, the Royals are a young team. Canha brings experience and leadership to the table. That’s very important for any ball club looking to contend. This could end up being an under-the-radar move for KC.</p><p>They went 86-76 in ’24, making it to the ALDS <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/3-royals-most-blame-alds-loss-yankees">before losing to the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series</a>. Bobby Witt Jr heads into 2025 as an MVP candidate once again, while the likes of Salvador Perez, Vinnie Pasquantino, and MJ Melendez, will be important players offensively. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-news-reds-royals-swing-brady-singer-jonathan-india-trade">The Royals also traded for Jonathan India</a> this offseason but lost Brady Singer in the process.</p><p>The AL Central is wide open and Kansas City should be competitive again.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Mets went on to win that game and the series. The Brewers made some changes this offseason, trading Devin Williams to the New York Yankees. General Manager Matt Arnold is confident in the decision to trade Williams this offseason.</p><p>“Any time you’re making those types of moves, messaging is super important — especially in the clubhouse, because these guys are the fabric of your team,” Arnold told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. “In a lot of ways, it actually can be a bet on the players that are still currently there.</p><p>Arnold continues, “It’s not, ‘Hey, I don’t believe in these guys.’ It actually might mean that you believe more in some other guys [who] want and deserve that opportunity to move into that type of role.
