That problem has left him off the mound for the club, and it may be awhile before he can return. Scherzer is <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44674888/blue-jays-max-scherzer-visit-specialist-again-thumb" rel="noopener">set to visit</a> yet another specialist about the issue, per the Associated Press.</p><p>“The longer he is out, the longer it will take to get him back,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “But I think first and foremost, just want to get it right.”</p><p>Thumb pain has left the veteran hurler out of the rotation. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-toronto-max-scherzer-plan-injury-recovery">The Blue Jays put Scherzer on the injured list</a> on March 30. He hasn’t been able to play since, although he is doing some baseball activities.</p><p>“He threw for four or five days on the road, each day with some varying degree of good or bad,” Schneider said. “He just wants to try to hammer it out.”</p><p>This season, Scherzer has made just one game appearance. He allowed two runs on three hits, in a three-inning appearance against the Baltimore Orioles. He has a 6.00 ERA.</p><p>The Blue Jays are fighting for the top spot in the American League East this season. Toronto holds a 9-8 record, heading into Tuesday’s games.</p><h2><b>The Blue Jays may not be able to win the AL East without Max Scherzer</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Max-Scherzer.jpg"><figcaption>Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-toronto-adds-max-scherzer-rotation-free-agency">The Blue Jays spent big money on Scherzer in free agency</a> this year. Toronto agreed to a one-year, $15.5 million contract with the veteran pitcher this offseason.</p><p>The goal for the Blue Jays is to get back to the postseason, with Scherzer leading the way in the rotation. Toronto had a very disappointing 2024 campaign. The Blue Jays missed the playoffs after winning just 74 games.</p><p>This offseason, the club brought in both Scherzer and slugger Anthony Santander to turn the ship around. Things had been going well, but the pitcher’s thumb injury has muddied the water. Toronto has lost six of their last 10 games.</p><p>Last year with the Texas Rangers, Scherzer also dealt with injury issues. He had back problems that caused him to spend time on the injured list. Occupying first place in the American League East definitely helps, but it goes beyond the Toronto Blue Jays’ 9-7 start to the 2025 season. The organization left much of the fan base feeling pleasantly surprised when it agreed to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/grading-vladimir-guerrero-jr-blue-jays-500-million-contract">14-year, $500 million contract extension</a> with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. last week.</p><p>There was dwindling hope that the face of the franchise would sign a new deal after he initially refuted the idea of negotiating with management during the regular season. Discussions persisted, though, and a historic commitment ultimately came to pass. The move did not completely erase fans’ longstanding skepticism, but it did evoke a strong sense of relief and newfound optimism that a viable vision is guiding the Blue Jays brass.</p><p>Guerrero himself had faith that this union would be reaffirmed. Canada is his birthplace and home. The idea of leaving the country and franchise to go elsewhere after coming of age in Toronto (signed at 16 years old) did not appeal to him. But in business, tough decisions are often made. Fortunately for Guerrero, he <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/vladimir-guerrero-jr-discusses-contract-extension" rel="noopener">gets everything he wanted</a>.</p><p>“I don’t know how to explain how I feel right now,” the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/10-greatest-blue-jays-players-all-time-ranked">four-time All-Star first baseman</a> told the media Monday afternoon, per MLB.com’s Jason Foster, after officially putting pen to paper. “I would think about this, always. Thank God we did it and I’m going to be a Blue Jay forever.”</p><h2><b>Can Blue Jays maximize the Vladimir Guerrero Jr. extension?</b></h2><p>Debates will understandably encircle this contract extension, especially since Guerrero has yet to hit a home run this season, but many fans see this as a potential turning point. The Blue Jays are still flawed and face significant uncertainty in the future. The pitching staff is getting old and the team has not won a playoff game since 2016. Not all is cured, far from it actually.</p><p>However, another decade and a half of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is not something the baseball gods foretold. Despite the concerns that come with lengthy extensions, The 6 will take comfort in knowing that slugger will continue to represent Toronto.</p><p>Guerrero is batting .302 with four doubles, seven RBIs and seven multi-hit games through 16 games. He and the Jays return from a long road trip and start a three-game series versus the Atlanta Braves (4-11) on Monday. Smashing a home run in the Dome seems like a fitting way for the 26-year-old to celebrate the renewal of his relationship with the team and city.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Toronto is now trying to find the pieces to complement him on the roster. The Blue Jays are expected to be <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/04/13/mlb-free-agents-lance-lynn-vladimir-guerrero/83060198007/" rel="noopener">a major player</a> in free agency for the future due to $120 million in salary space opening, per USA Today.</p><p>That money is coming off the books because several players are going to turn into free agents after this season, including starting pitcher Max Scherzer. Scherzer joined the team before the 2025 campaign, on a one-year deal.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-500-million-contract-extension-325-million-shocker">The Blue Jays are betting big on Guerrero</a>, Scherzer and others to lead them this season. Toronto currently holds a 8-7 record this season. The club gets plenty of competition from the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. The Orioles have been strong in recent years as well.</p><p>Due to the quality of these teams, the Blue Jays have pledged to spend big money on free agents. In recent years, the team swung for the fences by trying to land Shohei Ohtani. Ohtani was interested in Toronto, but opted eventually to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers instead.</p><p>Without Ohtani, Toronto stumbled their way through the 2024 season. The Blue Jays finished last year with a disappointing 74-88 record. The club missed a postseason appearance.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-toronto-dodgers-deferred-money-anthony-santander-signing">The Blue Jays made up some of that ground this past offseason</a> by signing Scherzer and slugger Anthony Santander. Toronto has made the postseason three times since 2020.</p><p>The club is about to have a lot of players up for new contracts. Not only is Scherzer becoming a free agent at the end of the season, but so are pitchers Chris Bassitt and Chad Green.</p><p>Toronto also has three key players up for new contracts after 2026. That includes outfielder George Springer, pitcher Kevin Gausman and reliever Yimi Garcia. Those three players alone take up about $55 million in payroll, per USA Today.</p><p>Blue Jays fans are excited for the future of the club. Aside from their <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/166229-toronto-blue-jays-back-to-back-world-series-champions" rel="noopener">two championship seasons</a> in 1992 and 1993, the franchise hasn’t experienced a ton of success. Despite that, they have had some of the best players in the league play for them during their time in the majors.</p><p>So who are the greatest players in Blue Jays history? That’s the question we have set out to answer today, so let’s take a look at the Top 10 Blue Jays players of all time and see why they have found their way on to this list.</p><h2><b>10. Vladimir Guerrero, Jr.</b></h2><p>Position: First Base</p><p>Years with Blue Jays: 2019-2025</p><p>Notable Accolades: Four-time All-Star, Two-time Silver Slugger, 2021 HR Champ, 2022 Gold Glove</p><p>As the son of a Hall of Famer, expectations have always been sky high for Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. However, he’s lived up to much of them as a four-time All-Star in six seasons and the runner-up in voting for the 2021 AL MVP after leading the league in home runs and OPS.</p><p>Now the pressure is on even more after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-500-million-extension-contract-blue-jays">Guerrero signed a 14-year, $500 million contract extension</a> in April 2025 that included a massive $325 million signing bonus. The Jays clearly believe that Guerrero will be climbing up this list as one of the franchise’s all-time best players. He’s already eighth all time in home runs for the Jays.</p><h2><b>9. Jesse Barfield</b></h2><p>Position: Right Field</p><p>Years with Blue Jays: 1981-1989</p><p>Notable Accolades: 1986 AL All-Star, 1986 Silver Slugger, Two-time Gold Glove winner</p><p>Jesse Barfield followed the path that several other players have taken who have made this list. He didn’t have a super long peak, but when he was at the top of his game, he was dominant. Barfield managed to win a starting role in 1982 but really broke out in 1985, when he finished seventh in the AL MVP race.</p><p>Barfield one-up that by putting together easily the best season of his career in 1986 (.289 BA, 40 HR, 108 RBI, .927 OPS), and he seemed set for superstardom afterwards.</p><p>That was the top of the mountain for Barfield, though, as he struggled to hit for a high average afterwards, and he ended up getting traded to the New York Yankees early in the 1989 season. But Barfield had already made a name for himself in Toronto, and remains one of their greatest Blue Jays of all time.</p><h2><b>8. Jimmy Key</b></h2><p>Position: Starting Pitcher</p><p>Years with Blue Jays: 1984-1992</p><p>Notable Accolades: Two-time AL All-Star, 1992 World Series champion</p><p>Jimmy Key spent his entire career in the American League East with three different teams, but he spent most of his time with the Blue Jays. Key actually broke in as a reliever in 1984 and picked up 10 saves as a rookie. But Key found his way into the rotation the next season and quickly earned his first All-Star selection.</p><p>Key would quickly top that in 1987, which was his best season with Toronto (17-8, 2.76 ERA, 161 K, 1.06 WHIP) and saw him finish second in the AL Cy Young race. He would make it to the All-Star Game in 1991 before winning a title in 1992 and departing in free agency, but by then, his legacy was set in stone.</p><p>Key was extremely consistent during his time with Toronto, and while he was never the greatest pitcher ever, it will be a long time before Blue Jays fans forget about him.</p><h2><b>7. Joe Carter</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Joe-Carter-waves-to-fans.jpg"><figcaption>Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Position: Right Field</p><p>Years with Blue Jays: 1991-1997</p><p>Notable Accolades: Five-time All-Star, Two-time Silver Slugger, Two-time World Series Champion</p><p>Joe Carter was a key contributor for the Jays during their glory days of the 1990s. Carter was the epitome of a run producer, driving in more than 100 runs in six of his seven seasons in Toronto. Carter is still fifth all time in Jays history in RBIs and home runs, eighth in doubles and hits and ninth in runs scored.</p><p>However, what he’ll forever be known for in Canada is one of the most famous home runs in baseball history in Game 6 of the 1993 World Series. With the Jays trailing by a run in the ninth inning, Carter hit a three-run walk-off homer off Philadelphia Phillies closer Mitch Williams to win the World Series.</p><h2><b>6. Carlos Delgado</b></h2><p>Position: First Base</p><p>Years with Blue Jays: 1993-2004</p><p>Notable Accolades: Two-time AL All-Star, Three-time Silver Slugger</p><p>Carlos Delgado broke in with the Blue Jays right after they won their second championship, but it wouldn’t be until 1996 that he consistently found his way into the lineup. Once he did, though, Delgado quickly became one of the best sluggers in the MLB. He hit at least 24 home runs in every full season of his career but somehow only was an All-Star twice.</p><p>Delgado had some truly dominant seasons, with his two best coming in 2000 (.344 BA, 41 RBI, 137 RBI, 1.134 OPS) and 2003 (.302 BA, 42 HR, 145 RBI, 1.019 OPS), the second of which nearly saw him win the AL MVP award, as he finished in second place.</p><p>Delgado was a pillar of consistency during his time with the Blue Jays, and his accomplishments at the plate helped him earn a spot in the top five on this greatest Blue Jays of all time list.</p><h2><b>5. Tony Fernandez</b></h2><p>Position: Shortstop, Third Base, and Second Base</p><p>Years with Blue Jays: 1983-1990, 1993, 1998-1999, 2001</p><p>Notable Accolades: Four-time AL All-Star, Four-time Gold Glove winner, 1993 World Series champion</p><p>Tony Fernandez might have one of the weirdest careers in MLB history, as he had four separate stints with Toronto. He came up with the team in 1983 and earned his first All-Star appearance in 1986. At his peak, Fernandez was one of the best contact hitters in the game who played phenomenal defense, primarily at shortstop.</p><p>Fernandez was his best in 1987 (.322 BA, 5 HR, 67 RBI, 32 SB, .805 OPS), which earned him an eighth place finish in the AL MVP race. Fernandez left after the 1990 season, but was traded back to Toronto midway through the 1993 season to help the Blue Jays win their second straight World Series.</p><p>He returned again in 1998 and was even an All-Star in 1999 when he was 37 before finishing his career with Toronto in 2001. But by then, Fernandez’s legacy with the Blue Jays was already secured.</p><h2><b>4. Jose Bautista</b></h2><p>Position: Right Field and Third Base</p><p>Years with Blue Jays: 2008-2017</p><p>Notable Accolades: Six-time AL All-Star, Three-time Silver Slugger</p><p>Jose Bautista wasn’t able to find his way in the MLB until he landed with the Blue Jays in 2008. Bautista was a starter in 2009, but he posted relatively unspectacular numbers during the season. No one could have expected what was about to come in 2010 (.260 BA, 54 HR, 124 RBI, .995 OPS) when Bautista emerged from out of nowhere to lead the majors in home runs.</p><p>He was arguably even better in 2011 (.302 BA, 43 HR, 103 RBI, 1.056 OPS) when he led the majors in homers again, but he never managed to win an MVP award. Bautista was an All-Star for six straight seasons from 2010-2015, and he became one of the best sluggers in the game from practically out of nowhere.</p><p>Bautista regressed significantly in 2016, but that six-season stretch has cemented Bautista’s place as one of the greatest Blue Jays of all time.</p><h2><b>3. Roberto Alomar</b></h2><p>Position Second Base</p><p>Years with Blue Jays: 1991-1995</p><p>Notable Accolades: Five-time All-Star, Five-time Gold Glove, Two-time World Series Champion, Hall of Famer</p><p>Roberto Alomar was one of the greatest all-around second baseman, and the Jays had him at his peak with him winning five Gold Gloves, stealing more than 200 bases in his five seasons and hitting an OPS of better than .800 each season. No wonder he was an All-Star every season with Toronto.</p><p>He was even better in the postseason as the Jays won the AL East three straight years. In 29 postseason games with the Jays, Alomar had a .918 OPS.</p><p>He had a 1.157 OPS, including two home runs, to win MVP for the 1992 ALCS in the Jays’ victory over the Oakland Athletics. His biggest hit was a game-tying two-run home run in the ninth inning of Game 4 off Hall of Fame closer Dennis Eckersley. The Jays went on to win the game in the 11th inning.</p><h2><b>2. Dave Stieb</b></h2><p>Position: Starting Pitcher</p><p>Years with Blue Jays: 1979-1992, 1998</p><p>Notable Accolades: Seven-time AL All-Star</p><p>The Blue Jays were founded in 1977, and you can make a case that Dave Stieb was their first superstar. Stieb was quickly an All-Star in his second season with Toronto in 1980, and never looked back. He was as consistent as they come, as he won at least 11 games in each year of the 80s except for 1986, and he almost never had an ERA come in above four runs.</p><p>Stieb had several great seasons, but his two best were in 1982 (17-14, 3.25 ERA, 141 K, 1.20 WHIP) and 1985 (14-13, 2.48 ERA, 167 K, 1.14 WHIP), the latter of which saw him lead the league in ERA. He found himself on the Chicago White Sox in 1993 and took a five-year hiatus before returning in 1998 to Toronto. Stieb wasn’t great at 40 years old, but his legacy was already intact.</p><h2><b>1. Roy Halladay</b></h2><p>Position: Starting Pitcher</p><p>Years with Blue Jays: 1998-2009</p><p>Notable Accolades: 2003 AL Cy Young, Six-time AL All-Star, Hall of Famer</p><p>Roy Halladay is an absolute legend in Toronto, and for good reason, but it’s easy to forget his MLB career nearly fell apart in 2000, when he posted a hideous 10.64 ERA over 67.2 innings of work. Halladay eventually worked his way back to the majors in 2001, and from there on out, he was a star.</p><p>Halladay was an All-Star in 2002 and won his first Cy Young award in 2003 (22-7, 3.25 ERA, 204 K, 1.07 WHIP). He struggled to stay on the mound in 2004, but from 2005 to 2009, he was arguably the most consistent pitcher in the game.</p><p>Halladay finished in the top five of the Cy Young vote in each season during the stretch and pitched at least four complete games in each season as well. He tragically passed away in 2017, but Halladay’s impact with the Blue Jays will never be forgotten as the greatest Blue Jays player of all time.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Blue Jays are hoping to return to the playoffs and pick up their first postseason win since 2016. The team secured star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-500-million-extension-contract-blue-jays">$500 million contract extension</a>, doubling down on contending for a championship now.</p><p>The Blue Jays are also close to getting a big boost as outfielder Daulton Varsho is <a href="https://x.com/bnicholsonsmith/status/1911119024358146480" rel="noopener">nearing his return</a> from injury. Varsho is set to play in extended spring training games next week, per Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith on X. The next step would be a Triple-A rehab assignment before he rejoins Toronto’s lineup.</p><p>Varsho was forced to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-toronto-hit-with-major-update-on-daulton-varshos-injury">undergo season-ending surgery</a> to repair a torn rotator cuff last year. He’s still working his way back from the ailment, which caused him to open the 2025 campaign on the injured list.</p><h2><b>Daulton Varsho is close to returning to the Blue Jays</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Daulton-Varsho-2.jpg"><figcaption>Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While the Blue Jays did not get <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-toronto-daulton-varsho-opening-day-injury-update">Varsho back in time for Opening Day</a>, he could return to the team in April. Toronto has played fairly well this season, starting out 8-6 and jumping to first place with a half game lead in the AL East. However, the team would benefit from Varsho’s presence.</p><p>After debuting with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2020 as a very rare center fielder/catcher, Varsho was traded to the Blue Jays ahead of the 2023 season. In his debut year with Toronto he had 20 home runs, 61 RBI, 65 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.</p><p>Last season, Varsho hit 18 homers, scored 73 runs and stole 10 bases while putting up 5.0 bWAR in 136 games. He won the Gold Glove for his work in the Blue Jays’ outfield.</p><p>Varsho is a power/speed player capable of going 20/20 who excels defensively. Toronto is eagerly awaiting his return to the lineup as the team attempts to fend off the Yankees, Red Sox and Orioles in a highly competitive division.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Alcantara is under contract through 2026, and he has a club option for 2027. Trading Alcantara away before the 2025 trade deadline would allow Miami to maximize his trade value.</p><p>It is worth noting that Alcantara missed the 2024 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Nevertheless, he has displayed signs of once again becoming the superstar pitcher he once was early on in 2025.</p><p>Here is a look at the potential Blue Jays-Marlins trade:</p><p><b>Blue Jays receive: RHP Sandy Alcantara</b></p><p><b>Marlins receive: RHP Trey Yesavage (Blue Jays No. 2 overall prospect), OF Alan Roden (Blue Jays No. 5 overall prospect), 3B/OF Charles McAdoo (Blue Jays No. 13 overall prospect)</b></p><h2><b>Marlins’ trade return</b></h2><p>Trading away a 29-year-old star pitcher with two years of team control remaining (thanks to the aforementioned club option in 2027) is risky. The Marlins’ current roster is not anywhere near becoming a World Series contender, though. As a result, hitting the reset button and maximizing Alcantara’s trade value makes the most sense.</p><p>This specific trade gives the Marlins a future star pitcher to go along with two intriguing position player prospects. Miami also receives two of the Blue Jays’ top five prospects.</p><p>Toronto may be hesitant to part ways with the team’s No. 1 overall prospect, shortstop Arjun Nimmala. The Marlins wouldn’t be able to receive two top five prospects if they acquired him either.</p><p>Instead, this trade has the Marlins acquiring the Blue Jays’ top pitching prospect, Trey Yesavage. Yesavage, a 21-year-old, has an MLB ETA of 2026. He throws a hard fastball and multiple quality breaking pitches. At 6’4″, Yesavage’s intimidating presence on the mound should only help him moving forward.</p><p>Alan Roden is already 25 years old, but the left-handed hitting outfielder is big league ready. He offers quality contact hitting ability. Additionally, Roden has continued to develop as a power threat.</p><p>Finally, the Marlins also receive the Blue Jays’ No. 13 overall prospect with the acquisition of 3B/OF Charles McAdoo. McAdoo, 23, has impressive power from the right-side of the plate. He still has room to improve in other areas of his game, but the Marlins would love to add a true power threat to the lineup.</p><h2><b>Blue Jays land Sandy Alcantara</b></h2><p>It is never an easy decision to trade three prospects, especially when two of them are top five prospects in your organization. The Blue Jays, however, would benefit without question from adding Alcantara. If Toronto is willing to embrace a win-now mindset, this is a trade that must be seriously considered.</p><p>Toronto’s current pitching rotation is fine, albeit far from spectacular.</p><p>Kevin Gausman features an ace-caliber ceiling. The same can be said for Jose Berrios. Both pitchers have been fairly inconsistent at times over the years, though. Chris Bassitt is a reliable veteran, and Bowden Francis has enjoyed some good moments in his career. Max Scherzer is also in the conversation, but he is currently injured.</p><p>Imagine that same rotation but with Sandy Alcantara leading the way. Gausman and Berrios instantly go from a fairly good 1-2 duo to arguably the best No. 2 and No. 3 pitchers in the sport. Finding a way to mix Scherzer into the rotation along with Bassitt or Francis will give the Blue Jays added depth.</p><p>The American League East is a deep division. It’s not clear exactly which players will be available, but there should be some solid options in the free agent market next offseason for Toronto.</p><p>There’s a reason why Guerrero could be the Blue Jays’ not-so-secret weapon when it comes to free agency. He’s one of the league’s best hitters and considering he’s in his mid-20s, he has incredibly long-term value in MLB. The four-time All-Star is off to a slow start to begin this season, recording a .278 batting average and .355 OBP while hitting zero home runs and five RBIs.</p><p>However, due to his prolific production throughout his career so far, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. should remain as one of the league’s premiere players as the season progresses. These pitchers included Liam Hendriks, Lucas Giolito and Brayan Bello.</p><p>The Red Sox do not appear interested in <a href="https://www.masslive.com/redsox/2025/04/red-sox-injuries-liam-hendriks-takes-big-step-toward-team-debut-2-other-pitchers-get-close.html" rel="noopener">rushing any of the pitchers back</a> as they are trying to avoid adding to their injury concerns.</p><p>“We’ll talk about it afterwards,” said manager Alex Cora via MassLive. “Bello went 3 ⅓ the other day. With that being said, the shortstop admitted that “nothing’s on the table” at the moment.</p><p>The Blue Jays’ focus was seemingly to sign Guerrero to an extension before he was set to hit free agency following the 2025 campaign. Guerrero is now set to remain in Toronto for the rest of his career. Building around a core is crucial, so it would be surprising if the Blue Jays did not at least inquire about the idea of signing Bichette to an extension.</p><p>Bichette may want to test free agency. He also may want to wait to sign a contract until after the ’25 season following his down 2024 campaign. A big year would certainly increase his next contract.</p><p>In 2024, the Blue Jays infielder hit just .225 to go along with a .598 OPS. It should be noted that Bichette was limited to only 81 games played. Still, his production while on the field was not up to his standards.</p><p>This is the same player who hit at least .290 in each season from 2019-2023. He also recorded an OPS of .802 or better in each of those years. Bichette is a doubles-machine who also offers 25-30 home run potential. He can steal some bases as well while also playing a premier position on defense.</p><p>Contract extension talks could heat up between Bo Bichette and the Blue Jays later in the season. If Toronto believes that a deal is not going to come to fruition, however, Bichette could emerge as a trade candidate. The ball club surely won’t want to risk losing him in MLB free agency for almost nothing in return.</p><h2><b>Future Hall of Famer reacts to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. contract extension</b></h2><p>As for the Guerrero extension, the news led to plenty of reactions from around the league. Guerrero’s teammate and future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer <a href="https://x.com/KeeganMatheson/status/1909379539991396404" rel="noopener">shared his thoughts</a> on Monday, via Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.</p><p>“His prime is still in front of him,” Scherzer said. “He can still get better. As ESPN’s David Schoenfield put it, the Blue Jays <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/44536563/mlb-2025-vladimir-guerrero-jr-toronto-blue-jays-500-million-deal-reaction" rel="noopener">can contend right now</a> — they just need help.</p><p>“I’d start hounding the Marlins about Sandy Alcantara,” Schoenfield wrote on Monday. “If the Blue Jays are going to contend this season — and they can — they’ll need more pitching, especially with Max Scherzer’s immediate future in doubt. Alcantara is signed through 2027, so he would team up nicely with Guerrero while showing the Blue Jays are committed to winning now.”</p><p>Alcantara is back on the mound after missing all of 2024 as he recovered from Tommy John surgery. The 2022 National League Cy Young winner is signed through 2027, but if he is able to recapture his old form, there’s no chance the Marlins will be able to keep him beyond then. They could be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-sandy-alcantara-trade-rumors-intriguing-reaction-marlins-president">looking to trade Alcantara</a> and his value should spike around July.</p><h2><b>The Blue Jays are committed to contending after signing Vladimir Guerrero Jr to a massive extension</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Vladimir-Guerrero-Jr_9e41f9.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Toronto is committed to contending in the American League East. If there was any doubt before, despite their heavy pursuits of Juan Soto and Shohei Ohtani, the Guerrero deal clears that up. As Schoenfield also wrote, extending Guerrero also means he won’t be spending the rest of his prime for a division rival.</p><p>“For them to contend in the AL East, they need the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-fans-erupt-over-vladimir-guerrero-jr-s-eye-popping-contract-extension">superstar version of Guerrero</a> to anchor the lineup,” he said. “That’s no guarantee, but there’s also a chance his best seasons are still ahead of him — and they won’t be coming for the Yankees or Red Sox, two teams who likely would have pursued him in the offseason.”</p><p>Guerrero is 26 and coming off of four straight All-Star seasons. Though he’s never quite returned to the level of his 2022 season, where he hit 48 home runs and finished second in MVP voting, he’s been consistently elite.
