San Diego rebounded from back-to-back <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-fans-in-shock-as-san-diego-melts-down-in-the-ninth-vs-reds">meltdowns against the Cincinnati Reds</a> by edging out the Rockies 2-0. And Jackson Merrill helped secure the victory with a clutch home run.</p><p>Merrill continued his recent hot streak with a two-out solo shot to left off McCade Brown in the fourth inning. After the game, the second-year pro confirmed that going the other way with the ball is <a href="https://x.com/973TheFanSD/status/1966355407322100100" rel="noopener">a good sign</a>.</p><p>“That’s my power. When I’m hitting to the opposite field, that’s when I’m right. The team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-san-diego-makes-jackson-merrill-il-decision-ankle-injury">placed Merrill on the 10-day IL</a> with the ailment and he missed 14 games. But since returning to the lineup in September, he’s looked more like the player that finished last season with an .826 OPS.</p><p>Merrill entered the opener against Colorado slashing .350/.381/.800 in his last five games. He now has two home runs, two doubles, two triples, five RBI and five runs scored since rejoining the Padres.</p><p>The key to this turnaround? “Trust myself,” Merrill said. “I think I lost track of how good a hitter I am. I just gotta have confidence in myself and just go ball every day. Play like a little kid, like I always have.”</p><p>It’s a welcome addition for a struggling San Diego team. After taking <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-san-diego-impressive-mark-win-dodgers">sole possession of first place in the NL West</a> with a win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 23, the Padres have gone 6-11. Fortunately for San Diego, the Dodgers haven’t exactly run away with the division. LA is just 9-7 in that same stretch, allowing the Padres to hang around.</p><p>Thursday’s victory narrowed the Dodgers’ lead to just 2.5 games. With 15 games remaining on the schedule, San Diego is hoping they can make a push for the division crown. And the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/1-padres-player-who-must-step-up-nl-west-race-with-dodgers">Padres need Merrill to step up</a>.</p><p>While he credits adjustments for his improvement at the plate, Merrill chose to keep the specifics to himself. “That’s for me and me only. He has been absent since, missing the team’s last 12 games.</p><p>The star infielder <a href="https://x.com/AJCassavell/status/1966258832365216223" rel="noopener">has been making progress</a> in his recovery. This was his third season with the team following his departure from the Boston Red Sox in the 2022 offseason.</p><p>San Diego has lost momentum after Bogaerts went down. They went 4-8 in the last 12 games following his injury, declining in their quality of play as one of the better teams in the National League.</p><p>San Diego has a 79-67 record on the season, holding the second spot of the NL West Division standings. They are three games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the top seed. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-freddie-freeman-fires-reality-check-tie-with-padres">Dodgers said they acknowledged the Padres’ success</a>, and the old rivals are headed towards a close finish. In order to close the gap and steal the National League West, Padres manager Mike Shildt needs more from Jackson Merrill. Fernando Tatis Jr. can’t do everything.</p><p>Merrill’s season has been quite disappointing all around. For player that nearly won the NL Rookie of the Year in 2024, experts around Major League Baseball anticipated a big season from the outfielder. However, he has been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-san-diego-makes-jackson-merrill-il-decision-ankle-injury">in and out of the Padres’ lineup thanks to injuries</a>. Even when he has been available, his production is far from the high standard he set in his rookie season.</p><p>Despite his struggles, Merrill remains a key piece to the puzzle for Shildt. As a whole, the manager’s roster is one of the most talented in the league. However, making the most of the players he has at his disposal has become a big challenge. Merrill has been at the center of it all. If he can get back on track, there is no telling just how far the Padres could go in the postseason.</p><p>The rest of the regular season and a potentially deep playoff run are crucial for the team. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-san-diego-mason-miller-trade-deadline-move">San Diego made some massive moves at the trade deadline</a> to improve the team. Because of that, the championship window got a lot smaller for the Padres. However, it was the right time to go all-in. San Diego came as close as anyone to knocking off the Dodgers in last year’s playoffs.</p><p>Regardless of how the season finishes, the Padres are a dark horse to win it all. However, Merrill can make them so much more.</p><h2>A bounce back from Merrill brings San Diego some much-needed balance</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Jackson-Merrill-to-miss-SD-Dodgers-opener-in-latest-injury-update.jpg"><figcaption>Credit: Bob Kupbens</figcaption></figure><p>Looking at the Padres’ lineup, not much needs fixing. Manny Machado and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-fans-buzzing-fernando-tatis-jr-441-hr-rockies">Tatis Jr. leads the team when it comes to power hitting</a>, a big reason why San Diego ranks near the top of the league in total offense. They are joined by players like Gavin Sheets and Xander Bogaerts, both of whom are also having good seasons. However, the team’s balance, or lack thereof, stands out.</p><p>Merrill is an interesting player when healthy because of how well-rounded he is. Slashing <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/4872691/jackson-merrill" rel="noopener">.259/.314/.422</a> is indicative of a player who is efficient with each at-bat he takes. However, injuries have kept him from getting into a rhythm this season at any point. If he repeated what he did in 2024, there is a good chance that the Padres would already be leading the NL West over Los Angeles.</p><p>Luckily for Merrill, he has more than 10 games to get back to normal before the postseason begins. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-fernando-tatis-jr-jackson-merrill-back-in-lineup-against-orioles">He and Tatis Jr. are off the injured list</a> and ready to build momentum heading into the playoffs. Both players are good enough to bring value to their team even if they are not hot at the plate. However, Shildt can do a lot around two elite hitters near the top of his batting order.</p><p>Merrill has what it takes to rise to the moment. He had his moments in the 2024 postseason, including in the Padres’ series against the Dodgers. He and his teammates have plenty of motivation to come back and make a statement this season. The only question is whether or not his injuries are completely behind him or if they will continue to hold him back from his best.</p><h2>Merrill’s injuries could come back to haunt him</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Jackson-Merrill-of-the-San-Diego-Padres.jpg"><figcaption>Denis Poroy-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-san-diego-gets-back-all-star-from-10-day-il">Shildt’s All-Star outfielder has spent time on the IL</a> at multiple points this season. In a vacuum, this might just be bad luck on Merrill’s part. None of his three major issues are connected to one another, much to the relief of the Padres’ fan base. However, his absence and the nature of his injuries make him a candidate to tweak something in a big postseason moment in the field.</p><p>Merrill is an excellent defensive player in center field. However, lower body injuries have a tendency to linger, especially for a player who runs as much as he does. The issues he has had with his legs are the chief reason why his steals are down from <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/4872691/jackson-merrill" rel="noopener">16 as a rookie to just one</a> in his second MLB season. Shildt does not want to take any chances with his 22-year-old star on the base paths.</p><p>While San Diego wants to be careful with Merrill, the time to fully unleash him is now. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-who-must-step-up-manny-machado-mlb-playoffs">Padres need players to increase their production to help the team’s stars</a> orchestrate a deep playoff run. If Merrill cannot break out of his season-long slump, San Diego will have to work itself out of a hole in the NL West, hurting them heading into the playoffs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Now, they need to rectify their playoff struggles and go further. While some believe <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-fatal-flaw-that-will-doom-2025-world-series-hopes">the Padres are doomed to fail,</a> they will go as far as Manny Machado can take them. Ultimately, there are three Padres players to watch, and it will be interesting to see how they do.</p><p>San Diego currently has <a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/mlb?tab=world-series" rel="noopener">odds of +1300 to win the World Series,</a> according to FanDuel. Overall, that gives them the eighth-best odds to win the title. The consensus is that they will make the MLB playoffs, but how far will they go? If you recall, the Padres lost in the National League Divisional Series 3-2 to the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.</p><p>Machado will be ready as always. Yet, there are three Padres players to watch who could be the pivotal guys to help get this team into the next stage. These three Padres players must step up to help San Diego reach baseball immortality in 2025.</p><h2><b>Fernando Tatis Jr. must match Manny Machado in everything</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-fernando-tatis-jr-walk-off-reds">Fernando Tatis Jr. clobbered a walk-off hit</a> this week, showcasing his capability. So far, he is having a good season. Tatis is batting .262 with 21 home runs, 63 RBIs, and 97 runs. Tatis, like many of his teammates, will need to do more to help Machado.</p><p>Tatis went 10 for 18 against the Dodgers last season in the NLDS. Overall, he was fantastic. Tatis hit two home runs in Game 2 and a two-run shot in Game 3. Things looked like they were going well. Then, everything went south. Tatis, like the rest of his team, sputtered over the last two games, when the Padres did not score for 24 consecutive innings. Tatis went 1 for 10 across Games 4 and 5.</p><p>If the Padres are to go far in the playoffs, they need Tatis to hit the baseball consistently. Assuming they can get past the Chicago Cubs in a potential three-game NL Wild Card Series, they would likely face the Milwaukee Brewers. The offense cannot go silent again, and Tatis needs to lead the charge.</p><h2><b>Ryan O’Hearn is one of the new Padres players</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Ryan-OHearn-at-bat-for-the-Padres.jpg"><figcaption>© Stephen Brashear-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>When the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-san-diego-lands-ryan-ohearn-ramon-laureano-orioles-blockbuster-trade">Padres traded for Ryan O’Hearn,</a> they thought they had a new powerful bat in their lineup. Instead, it has not worked out that way. The Padres rank 29th in home runs, 23rd in runs, and 26th in slugging percentage. Unfortunately, O’Hearn has not been consistent.</p><p>O’Hearn is batting .274 with 16 home runs, 54 RBIs, and 61 runs. However, he is hitting just .250 with three home runs, 11 RBIs, and 16 runs over 35 games with the Padres. If the Padres are to make a mark in the MLB playoffs, they need O’Hearn to step up. Moreover, they need him to be a threat with runners in scoring position. That is something the team struggled with throughout the season. Can O’Hearn pick it up? The Padres certainly need him to.</p><p>O’Hearn is finally getting a full-time opportunity. Yet, it does not seem like he has done much with the chance. The Padres need O’Hearn to get things going, especially if they are to survive a three-game NL Wild Card Series with the Cubs and then an NLDS series with an even-better Brewers team.</p><h2><b>Luis Arraez must do more</b></h2><p>Going back to last season, Luis Arraez was among the many reasons the Padres lost to the Dodgers. Arraez went 4 for 22 in the NLDS against Los Angeles. Alarmingly, he just could not get anything going, and that is something that cannot happen again, as the Padres are poised for another playoff run.</p><p>Arraez is usually at the top of the lineup. If San Diego is to make a serious run, then he cannot have a major slump. The Padres went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position in Game 4. Unfortunately, Arraez was among the contributors to that statline, being unable to drive anyone home. The leadoff hitters were unable to generate anything, and it set up the rest of the lineup for failure.</p><p>While the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-fans-in-shock-as-san-diego-melts-down-in-the-ninth-vs-reds">Padres’ bullpen collapsed recently</a> in a game against the Reds, they are not the issue. San Diego currently has the best bullpen in baseball, and the rotation is solid. What this team needs is for the hitters to play well in October. Although that does not always happen, teams that usually win the title get hot hitting at the right time. These three Padres players all have the potential to have a great October and lead their team to a title. Fortunately, the Padres have gotten hot as the weather begins to cool, securing two wins against the Colorado Rockies and a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-fernando-tatis-jr-walk-off-reds">walkoff win over the Reds</a> in their first of three games.</p><p>With the season series against the Dodgers officially lost, giving Los Angeles the tiebreaker if the two teams end up finishing out the year with the same record, the Padres need to do everything in their power to leapfrog Shohei Ohtani and company before the start of the postseason if they are going to finally break their drought and bring a pennant back to San Diego. The Padres will look to bounce back in their second matchup of a three-game series after a 3-0 loss on Friday. San Diego made the roster change ahead of Saturday’s game.</p><p>The Padres announced Vasquez <a href="https://x.com/padres/status/1964412809573519569?s=46" rel="noopener">was being recalled</a> from Triple-A, per the team’s X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>“We have optioned RHP Sean Reynolds to Triple-A El Paso and recalled RHP Randy Vasquez from El Paso,” the Padres stated.</p><p>The Padres are 2-8 in their last 10 games, as their struggles from late August have crept into September. Vasquez last pitched in a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 15.</p><h2><b>Padres’ Nestor Cortes receives unfortunate injury update</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Padres-pitcher-Nestor-Cortes.jpg"><figcaption>Matt Krohn-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Padres left-hander <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-nestor-cortes-back-to-back-to-back-home-runs-orioles">Nestor Cortes surrendered back-to-back-to-back</a> home runs against the Orioles. However, Cortes sustained left bicep tendinitis, which plagued Cortes’ performance. He hasn’t started since. Nestor gave up six runs on seven hits, including four home runs.</p><p>Cortes is on the Padres’ 15-day IL. The Padres have given up three or more runs in each of their five outings, including seven runs in two separate games against the Orioles and the Twins.</p><p>In Cortes’ absence, the Padres have recalled right-hander Ron Marinaccio from Triple-A El Paso. Marinaccio, who owns a 5.05 ERA in 46.1 innings at Triple-A, has fared better in limited big-league action this season. In three appearances for the Padres, Marinaccio has pitched 4.2 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. The 29-year-old also brings prior major league experience, having spent three seasons with the Yankees before joining San Diego’s system.</p><p>After being acquired at the trade deadline from the Brewers, Cortes has logged 26.1 innings with a 5.47 ERA, a 21:13 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and a WHIP above 1.5. His only standout performance came on August 23 against the Dodgers, when he delivered six scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Cortes’ tenure with the Padres began under challenging circumstances, as he was still recovering from a left elbow flexor strain at the time of the trade.</p><p>After their three-game series on the road against the Rockies, the Padres will host a three-game series against the Reds.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
