However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-clayton-mccullough-drops-nsfw-rant-umpire-after-ejection">Marlins manager Clayton McCullough has found new energy</a>. The emergence of young players on Miami’s roster played a big part. Now, Marlins catcher Agustin Ramirez is a lead candidate for the National League Rookie of the Year award with Drake Baldwin and Isaac Collins.</p><p>Ramirez is not the only young player to have a standout season for the Marlins. However, the rookie might be the best of the group years into the future. His mix of production at the plate and defense behind it make him a perfect fit in McCullough’s long-term plans. Despite his clear talent, the 24-year-old is not receiving the attention he deserves in the NL ROY conversation.</p><p>As a player, Ramirez still has a list of improvements to make. However, the numbers he has put up in his first Major League Baseball season are worthy of award consideration. His team has seen players like <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-javier-sanojas-achievement-wasted-loss-blue-jays">Javier Sanoja set franchise marks throughout the Marlins’ 2025 season</a>. Even though he has not had many of those games, he will play a big part in the team’s turnaround.</p><p>McCullough’s team has some hope for the first time in a while. The Marlins are near the bottom of the standings for now, but things are trending in the right direction. The continued development of Ramirez and other young standouts will help Miami re-enter the realm of contention in the NL East. Until then, the team can put its efforts into endorsing Ramirez’s NL ROY campaign.</p><p>Ramirez is a long shot to win the award when compared to Baldwin or Collins. Even though Miami stayed semi-attached to the top squads in the NL East, it did not last long. Now, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-clayton-mccullough-kyle-stowers-new-oblique-strain">injuries to Kyle Stowers and other Marlins</a> have the offense in another lull. However, one player has been an anchor, bringing stability to an ever-changing order. If nothing else, Ramirez is a calming presence in the lineup.</p><p>It did not take long for Ramirez to get called up to join the Marlins. Since arriving, the catcher quickly went through an acclimation period and then started to produce. The result is one of the team’s most well-rounded hitters when it comes to balancing power with average. Heading into Wednesday’s games, Ramirez has <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/stats/_/id/5132014/agustin-ramirez" rel="noopener">28 doubles and 19 home runs</a> on the season so far.</p><p>Those totals do not jump off the page if they came from a veteran player. However, the fact that Ramirez put up those numbers in his first season is noteworthy. He leads the team in doubles and is second in home runs, playing a key role in the offense. Without him, McCullough’s team might have left up to 61 RBIs on the table this season, which would have made its record even worse.</p><p>Ramirez is not a flashy player, something that works against him in the NL ROY conversation. However, he has not had time to make any splashy moves this season. Instead he put his head down and went to work every day. That kind of consistency and production is tough to ignore, even for strict voters. However, Ramirez’s arrival marked the first step in the right direction in Miami. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-agustin-ramirez-makes-modern-era-mlb-history-unreal-start">Marlins catcher made history early in the season</a> and kept on turning heads all year long. While he received plenty of opportunity with his team, other rookies had the chance to contribute to a winning team. That means a lot to award voters.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-milwaukee-magic-continues-walk-off-comeback-win-mets">Collins has given clutch hitting to the Milwaukee Brewers</a>. Even Baldwin has stepped into a significant role with the Atlanta Braves. However, both players are flanked by veterans who take the pressure off of them. Without Stowers on the field, the bulk of the offensive responsibility lies on Ramirez’s shoulders. It is a lot to put on a rookie, but he has yet to crumble under the pressure.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/atlanta-braves/why-braves-drake-baldwin-will-win-nl-rookie-of-the-year-award">Baldwin’s case to win the NL ROY Award is a good one</a>. However, Ramirez should not give up and make the most of the games he has left. He has the body of work it takes to steal the award if he finished the year well. Despite the losses, rookie Agustin Ramirez has been lighting up South Beach.</p><p>Ramirez is a 23-year-old catcher who has played in just 15 games. In those 15 contests, the catcher has hit .276 with four home runs and eight RBIs. He has added three walks and a .932 OPS. Eight of his 16 hits have been doubles, which makes 12 of his 16 as extra-base hits. Ramirez has been a huge bright spot for a team that is off to a rough start to the 2025 season. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/betting/marlins-vs-white-sox-prediction-odds-pick-5-10-2025" rel="noopener">Marlins aim to beat the White Sox</a> on Saturday.</p><p>As a result of this hot start, the sportsbooks have taken notice. Ramirez has already jumped Dodgers’ rookie Roki Sasaki as the National League <a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/mlb?tab=awards" rel="noopener">Rookie of the Year betting favorite</a> on FanDuel. The catcher has +350 odds to win the award, and Sasaki is second at +500, tied with Mets’ rookie Luisangel Acuna. Dylan Crews is 4th at +550 while AJ Smith-Shawver is 5th at +850. This is a loaded class of NL rookies, as some other names not mentioned are worthy of paying attention to.</p><p>The last catcher to win NL ROY was Buster Posey in 2010.</p><p>The Marlins are coming off a loss to the Chicago White Sox, who are just 11-28 on the season. The Fish aren’t much better at 14-23, and things don’t get much easier with the Chicago Cubs next on the schedule.</p><p>Miami’s lineup is inexperienced. Their only veteran hitter at this point would be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/miami-marlins/marlins-news-jesus-sanchez-calls-game-vs-dodgers-walk-off-stunner">Jesus Sanchez, who isn’t really considered a vet</a>. The team is young, and it will take time before they start winning games. Some other Marlins hitters have stepped up, including Kyle Stowers, who has a .295 average and 25 RBIs, and Matt Mervis, who has seven homers. Xavier Edwards leads the team in hits with 38 and walks at 18.</p><h2><b>Roki Sasaki Falls in the NL ROY Odds</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Roki-Sasaki.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas</figcaption></figure><p>The prized young phenom from Japan has not had the start of his career he had envisioned when he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this past offseason. While he is very young and has plenty of time to figure things out, his numbers are alarming.</p><p>The Dodgers have dealt with a lot of injuries but they are still winning games as they have the league’s top record at 26-13. Still, they need to see better outings from Sasaki. Sasaki started all eight outings but has yet to pitch more than six innings. Half of his starts have been four innings or fewer, including this past Friday night’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-los-angeles-mlb-history-insane-win-vs-d-backs">start against the Arizona Diamondbacks</a>.</p><p>Against the Dbacks, he did not register a strikeout. Strikeouts are supposed to be his bread and butter, but he has failed to make that a threat in his game. His career high in K’s is four, which he has done multiple times. On the season, he has 24 K’s and a 4.72 ERA. He adds a 1.49 WHIP with 22 walks in 34.1 innings.</p><p>Sasaki’s next start is scheduled to be against the Athletics back in Los Angeles. He has pitched slightly better at home, although there isn’t much of a difference. He has 10 fewer innings at home and is coming off two straight outings on the road.</p><p>A successful home start against the A’s could see the odds favor Sasaki again, as he was a big favorite heading into the season.
