The White Sox aren’t expected to be much better this season after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-boston-finalizing-blockbuster-garrett-crochet-trade-white-sox" rel="noopener">trading ace Garrett Crochet</a> to the Boston Red Sox.</p><p>Now Chicago’s already weak roster has become a <a href="https://x.com/whitesox/status/1895230860112339017" rel="noopener">bit weaker</a> after Andrew Benintendi suffered a non-displaced fracture of his right hand, according to the White Sox’s official account on X. The team anticipates the veteran left fielder will miss four to six weeks as he heals from the injury.</p><p>Benintendi led the White Sox with 20 home runs last season in an otherwise forgettable year. While once a serviceable outfielder capable of producing at the plate, Benintendi has declined since his lone All-Star season in 2022.</p><h2><b>The White Sox lose starting left fielder Andrew Benintendi to broken hand</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Andrew-Benintendi.jpg"><figcaption>Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The nine-year veteran <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/white-sox-andrew-benintendi-opens-up-on-ditching-the-yankees-in-free-agency" rel="noopener">left the New York Yankees</a> for a bigger contract with the White Sox in 2023. In two seasons with Chicago, he’s produced an OPS+ of 91. In 2024, he finished with -0.8 WAR, which was the fifth worst output on a team with a dearth of talent.</p><p>Benintendi is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/white-sox-news-andrew-benintendi-breaks-silence-on-signing-in-chicago" rel="noopener">Chicago’s highest paid player</a>, due to make $17.1 million in 2025. Obviously the team is hoping he can bounce back to his Gold Glove-winning form of 2021 so they can trade him mid-season. However, the injury, sustained when he was hit by a pitch in a spring training game, will make a potential trade all the more challenging.</p><p>With Benintendi set to miss a month or more of the season, the team will need to find a replacement for him in left. It’s possible former Texas Rangers’ slugger Joey Gallo has his contract selected. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-white-sox/white-sox-news-joey-gallo-tries-revive-career-signs-contract">White Sox signed Gallo to a minor league deal</a> that included a non-roster invite to spring training.</p><p>The idea of replacing a struggling Benintendi with an even harder struggling Gallo is somewhat depressing. But it’s a very White Sox move. Chicago has made three playoff appearances over the last 19 years, going 3-8. During their 9-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-white-sox-make-embarrassing-history-100th-loss">White Sox became the second-fastest team</a> to reach 100 losses.</p><p>After the game, White Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi revealed what interim manager Grady Sizemore’s <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40993611/chicago-white-sox-lose-100th-game-detroit-tigers-sweep" rel="noopener">message to the team</a> has been during this disaster of a year.</p><p>“We have been talking about it all year,” Benintendi said. “It’s beating a dead horse at this point. We are not where we want to be. [Interim manager Grady Sizemore] said it best: ‘Unless you win the last game of the year, it doesn’t matter.’ So, I think everyone has moved on.”</p><p>For a team that has struggled so much, this is probably the correct attitude to have it the clubhouse. It has to be demoralizing to lose so often, so keeping the ultimate goal of winning the World Series in mind is a great way to keep the difficulties of this season in perspective.</p><p>The White Sox’s on-field performance has not necessarily improved under Sizemore, who is 3-11 since being named interim manager after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-fire-pedro-grifol-amid-historically-bad-2024-campaign">former manager Pedro Grifol was fired</a> on Aug. 8. However, based on Benintendi’s comments it seems like Sizemore has done as good of a job as anyone could in keeping the clubhouse together, which is as important as winning games at this point in the White Sox’s season.</p><h2><b>White Sox’s historically bad 2024 season</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/08-26-24-sizemore-image.jpg"><figcaption>© D. Ross Cameron-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>With a 31-100 record, the only team to hit the century mark faster than this year’s White Sox were the Philadelphia A’s in 1916, who reached 100 losses with a 29-100-1 record. Going forward, the White Sox need to go 12-19 to have a better record than the 1962 New York Mets, who ended their season with 1 40-120-1 record, the worst in modern baseball history.</p><p>This is the sixth time in White Sox history where they have lost 100 or more games, and the first time they have lost 100 games in consecutive seasons after going 61-101 last year. They dropped a franchise-worst 106 games in 1970. Their worst winning percentage came in 1932 when they went 49-102-1 (.325).</p><p>The White Sox have had two notable losing streaks this season, losing 14 games in a row in late May and early June and 21 straight through July and early August.</p><p>Despite all of the negatives this season, there is still some hope for the future. Even though he currently has the interim tag, it has been reported that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-white-sox-grady-sizemore-future">Sizemore will be considered for the open managerial position</a> this offseason if he impresses during the remaining few weeks.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

In fact, he was a teammate of Chris Sale for four of those years and knows just how special of a human being the left-hander is.</p><p>Ahead of the series opener between the White Sox and Red Sox on Friday, Benintendi had<a href="https://twitter.com/scottmerkin/status/1705345314687783380" rel="noopener"> nothing but praise</a> for Sale before facing the veteran:</p><p>Via Scott Merkin:</p><p>“He’s one of the best teammates I’ve ever been around. He would take the shirt off his back for you. It will be fun to watch him out there tonight throwing against us.”</p><p>Sale might be a hothead at times, but it’s clear all of his teammates love him. Unfortunately, injuries have limited the southpaw to just 29 starts across the last three seasons. In 2023, he’s 6-4 with a 4.66 ERA, striking out 116 in 92.2 innings. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-news-chris-sales-latest-rehab-start-amid-impending-injury-return-have-boston-fans-fired-up" rel="noopener">The old Chris Sale</a> has shown up at times.</p><p>As for Benintendi,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/red-sox-triston-casas-bobby-dalbec-roster" rel="noopener"> the Red Sox</a> traded him to the Kansas City Royals just before Spring Training in 2021. He spent a year and a half there before they shipped him off to the New York Yankees at the 2022 deadline. Things didn’t work out and Benintendi ultimately ended up signing a five-year, $75 million deal with the White Sox before this season.</p><p>Red Sox fans will always have a soft spot for Benintendi, who came up with the ball club and played a key part in their 2018 title. They also know just how brilliant Sale is and hopefully, he can stay healthy and find his best once again.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Baseball is a funny game though, where one good week could turn a team’s season around.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-make-mike-clevinger-injury-move" rel="noopener">White Sox are coming off</a> their first sweep of the 2023 season and a 5-1 week. Despite a 19-29 record and plenty more negatives than positives to share, outfielder Andrew Benintendi said Chicago is still confident they can <a href="https://allchgo.com/2023/05/21/white-sox-sweep-in-summer-with-better-play-vibes-in-effort-to-shake-off-bad-start-this-wont-break-us/" rel="noopener">compete for a division title.</a></p><p>“Coming out of spring training, your hopes are always high, and you never really know what’s going to happen. But in the spring, we definitely thought we could be a team that competes and wins a division, and we all still think that and that’s what we’re striving for,” Benintendi said.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-perfect-tim-anderson-los-angeles-white-sox-trade" rel="noopener">White Sox were 8-21</a> entering May. They’re 11-9 in the second full month of the season so far, fighting for a winning month to jumpstart their season before summer hits. Chicago is 6.5 games back of first place in the AL Central.</p><p>Andrew Benintendi himself has enjoyed recent success at the plate. He currently has an eight-game hitting streak and is hitting .278 in May. He said that winning keeps everyone’s attitudes afloat.</p><p>“It’s been better. Obviously, winning takes care of everything. The more games we win, the better everybody’s attitude is (and the better everybody) feels,” Benintendi said. “No one’s going to put more pressure on us than we do ourselves. So we’ve just got to go out there, play and have fun and win games.”</p><p>The White Sox have been doing more winning than usual lately. It’ll be interesting to see where Chicago stands in a couple of weeks.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
