He was replaced after five innings of work on the mound and even though he had only thrown 85 pitches. While Heaney would have loved to see at least another inning of action, he <a href="https://www.mlb.com/rangers/news/andrew-heaney-shines-but-rangers-fall-to-astros" rel="noopener">understood the decision</a> of manager Bruce Bochy and the Rangers to end his night relatively early.</p><p><i>“As far as going back out there, near the end of my last two starts, I gave up two homers in Chicago in my last inning and a homer in my last inning of the start against Detroit, so I haven’t inspired confidence of late,” </i>Andrew Heaney said following the loss to the Astros (h/t Kennedi Landry of MLB.com). <i>“I haven’t earned that trust from Boch, and our bullpen has been great. So I understand. I believe in myself. I always want to go out there and take the ball, but I also know that I’ve got to earn it.”</i></p><p>Andrew Heaney ended his stint against the Astros with zero earned runs and only three hits allowed while striking out eight Houston batters. He left the mound with the Rangers still ahead by a run but Texas’ bullpen failed to get the job done, with Grant Anderson, Josh Sborz and Brock Burke combining for five earned runs on six hits.</p><p>Heaney toed the rubber against the Astros on the heels of a shaky June in which he went 1-2 with a 5.87 ERA across five starts. He joined ClutchPoints in 2022.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Texas Rangers starter Andrew Heaney has struggled in June, but he <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/rangers/2023/06/19/how-rangers-andrew-heaney-found-his-command-again-gave-himself-a-reset-vs-white-sox/" rel="noopener">bounced back in a big way</a> against the Chicago White Sox on Monday, earning his first win of the month.</p><p>Heaney worked five shutout innings before serving up back-to-back solo home runs to Andrew Vaughn and Luis Robert in the sixth, but still managed to pick up the victory as the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-odds-rangers-josh-jung-top-al-roy-odds-leaderboard" rel="noopener">Rangers beat the Sox</a> 5-2.</p><p>He yielded two runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings while striking out six in what was just shy of a quality start.</p><p>“Sometimes you just need a reset,” Heaney said after the game, according to The Dallas Morning News. “It’s about how quickly you can turn things around. You could see what was going wrong. I was spraying fastballs, getting behind in counts and pressing too much instead of letting my stuff play.”</p><p>Heaney had three rough starts in June and said he was trying to be “too perfect” with his pitches. But he relied on his fastball against Chicago, taking a shutout all the way to the sixth before the pair of two-out home runs to Vaughn and Robert.</p><p>He’s given up three or fewer earned runs in eight straight appearances, dropping his season ERA from 5.52 to 3.98 in the process. He moved to 6-2 on the season in advance of his next start in Yankee Stadium.</p><p>“When you are in 1-0, 2-0 counts, you feel like your fastballs have to be a little more perfect,” Heaney continued. “I tried to simplify things and just get back to throwing strikes.”</p><p>And that’s exactly what the 32-year-old did on Monday night, as the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/3-early-2023-mlb-trade-deadline-targets-for-texas-rangers" rel="noopener">Texas Rangers continue to impress</a> in the AL West.</p><p>The team now holds a 45-27 record, good enough for second place in the entire American League behind just the Tampa Bay Rays. While this is Heaney’s first year <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-jake-odorizzi-miss-season-shoulder-injury-crushing-blow-texas-rotation" rel="noopener">on the Rangers</a>, he has already broken one of Nolan Ryan’s records.</p><p>In the Rangers’ Monday contest against the Kansas City Royals, Heaney <a href="https://twitter.com/JeffWilsonTXR/status/1645589895073894402" rel="noopener">struck out</a> nine straight batters through the third inning, via Jeff Wilson of Rangers Today. . Prior to the Rangers, he spent seven of his 10 MLB seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. In LA, Heaney appeared in 102 games, pitching to a 30-33 record with a 4.51 ERA and a 593/162 K/BB ratio.</p><p>Heaney came to the Rangers in an offseason pitching haul that included Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi. However, his debut in Texas wasn’t as grand as the Rangers had hoped. Heaney lasted just 2.2 innings in his first start – against the Baltimore Orioles – allowing seven hits, two home runs and seven overall earned runs.</p><p>Against the Royals, Heaney let up a lead off single to Bobby Witt Jr. He would later score on a fielding error. But after that blemish, the left-hander would lock in and strikeout the next nine batters. Heaney’s Rangers held a 3-1 lead after the third inning.</p><p>The Rangers have true playoff aspirations this season. Between their offensive additions last year and pitching acquisitions this year – on top of adding Bruce Bochy as manager – Texas proved that they no longer want to be cellar dwellers. Heaney went on to feature in the Dodgers’ starting rotation, and he managed to bounce back from his sluggish 2021 campaign with both the Los Angeles Angels and the New York Yankees. He posted career highs across the board last year, including in ERA+ (136).</p><p>Heaney made several changes to his pitching mechanics ahead of the season, and as he <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/rangers/2023/03/03/rangers-andrew-heaney-describes-how-changed-mindset-mechanical-tweaks-led-to-career-year/" rel="noopener">revealed</a> during a recent appearance on Sportsradio 96.7 FM’s “The Norm and D Invasion” show, he also heavily relied on a slider pitch for the first time in his career.</p><p>“Yeah, when I got over to the Dodgers, they kind of encouraged me to retool kind of my pitches, stick with the 14 that’s always been a big pitch for me,” Heaney said. “But they wanted me to throw a little bit different slider, and it took me a bit throughout spring training and really didn’t find it until the end of spring.”</p><p>Heaney’s slider was one of his go-to pitches in the 2022 season. Opposing hitters notched a .170 batting average against his slider, and the veteran starter tallied 47 strikeouts from the pitch.</p><p>Heaney added that the Dodgers advised him to simply be “aggressive” on the mound, which helped him tally a career-high in strikeouts per nine innings (13.6).</p><p>“They really encouraged me to sort of say, ‘Hey, view yourself as a power pitcher, you’re not a finesse guy, go out there and trust your stuff and go be aggressive and really attack hitters with two pitches and be relentless,'” Heaney said. “So that’s something that it really was, a little bit of mechanical stuff and some different pitches, but also just the mentality change of viewing myself that way as a strikeout pitcher.</p><p>“And that really, once I saw it kind of started happening, that really gave me some confidence.”</p><p>Heaney returned to the American League West in December, as he came to terms with the Rangers on a two-year deal.</p><p>The Rangers will kick off their 2023 regular season schedule with a home contest against the Philadelphia Phillies on March 30.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

From an offensive standpoint, LA has lost Trea Turner, Justin Turner, and Cody Bellinger. Meanwhile, they saw a couple of key starting pitchers sign elsewhere in Tyler Anderson and Andrew Heaney. But there is a silver lining to the departures of Anderson and Heaney.</p><p>Bobby Miller, a pitcher who was the Dodgers’ No. 2 overall prospect in 2022, will likely make his big league debut in 2023. Miller’s call-up could <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/top-prospects-expected-to-debut-in-2023?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage" rel="noopener">come sooner rather than later</a> given the aforementioned free agency departures, per MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo.</p><p>“The Dodgers can replace some of the innings they lost with departed free agents Tyler Anderson and Andrew Heaney by turning to (Bobby) Miller,” Mayo wrote in a recent MLB.com article.</p><p>The Dodgers are excited about Bobby Miller’s future. However, other teams have expressed interest in the young flame-thrower. In fact, reports have stated that the Pittsburgh Pirates would want Miller in a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-dodgers-price-for-acquiring-pirates-bryan-reynolds-revealed" rel="noopener">potential Bryan Reynolds trade</a>. And that fact alone lessens the chance of LA attempting to acquire the Pirates’ centerfielder.</p><p>The Dodgers could turn to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-the-surprising-angels-pitching-strategy-la-could-implement-in-2023" rel="noopener">6-man rotation</a> this season to keep their starters fresh and healthy. They currently have five starting pitchers that are expected to be locked into the rotation. The odds of Miller making the team out of Spring Training are slim. But he could be used as an injury replacement or 6th man in the rotation at some point during the season.</p><p>But Miller’s debut may not have come for a long while if Heaney and Anderson were still on the Dodgers’ roster.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
