Ohtani became the first Dodger in 25 years to reach 100 walks in a single season after being issued a free pass by Giants right-hander Justin Verlander in the third inning.</p><p>By drawing three walks in the game, including two intentional, Ohtani raised his season total to 102, <a href="https://x.com/billplunkettocr/status/1966698280156315860" rel="noopener">joining four other MLB players</a>, Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, Rafael Devers, and himself, who have reached 100 walks this season, according to the Dodgers beat writer Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.</p><p>Ohtani is only the fifth Dodgers player to reach triple digits in walks, joining Jim Wynn (110 in 1975), Brett Butler (108 in 1991), Reggie Smith (104 in 1977), and Gary Sheffield (101 in 1999, 100 in 2000). His 15.43% walk rate this season ranks among his career highs, comparable to 15.19% in 2023 and 15.02% in 2021, though his raw totals are higher thanks to more games played and his full-time designated-hitter role. In his last 30 games, Ohtani has drawn 27 walks and extended his on-base streak to 17 games.</p><p>Ohtani’s achievement stood tall, even if the game didn’t. The Dodgers (82-65) fell to the Giants (75-72) in 10 innings. Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto delivered another dominant outing, striking out 10 over seven innings while allowing just one hit. He retired the final 20 batters he faced, marking the second consecutive start with one hit over at least seven innings, a feat not matched by a Dodger since Dazzy Vance in 1925. In his last three starts, Yamamoto has posted a 1.22 ERA with 30 strikeouts and three walks.</p><p>Offensively, the Dodgers struggled, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and leaving nine men on base. Michael Conforto, facing his former team, tied the game with a solo home run in the seventh, his 11th of the season and eighth on the road. Center fielder Andy Pages threw a 92.9 mph relay to nail pinch-runner Grant McCray at home, ending another Dodgers scoring opportunity in the ninth.</p><p>The game ended in the 10th when Giants catcher Patrick Bailey hit a walk-off grand slam off Tanner Scott, giving San Francisco a 5-1 victory and pulling them within half a game of the New York Mets for the third National League Wild Card spot. Bailey’s homer was his second walk-off of the season and fourth in his career, making him the first MLB player to hit both a walk-off inside-the-park home run and a walk-off grand slam in the same season.</p><p>Heading into the final 15 games of the season, Ohtani is on pace to surpass Wynn’s Los Angeles single-season record of 110 walks. Yoshinobu Yamamoto was sensational, allowing just one run on one hit and one walk while striking out 10 in seven innings. But Justin Verlander kept the Giants in the game. He matched Yamamoto, limiting the Dodgers to one run in seven frames.</p><p>The matchup went to extra innings tied 1-1 when LA’s bullpen faltered. Blake Treinen recorded the first out in the bottom of the 10th before manager Dave Roberts gave the ball to Tanner Scott. The Dodgers’ closer loaded the bases by intentionally walking Casey Schmitt to face Patrick Bailey. The 26-year-old catcher won a Gold Glove in his first full season in the majors last year. But on Friday, he let his bat do the talking, crushing an absolute no-doubter off Scott.</p><p>The grand slam was actually the backstop’s second dramatic game-winner this year. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-patrick-bailey-walks-off-phillies-inside-the-park-home-run">Bailey hit a walk-off, inside-the-park home run</a> in July. He was the first catcher to accomplish the feat since 1926.</p><p>The Giants have been red-hot over the last three weeks. The team is 14-4 since August 22. Friday’s win pulled San Francisco within a half-game of the third Wild Card berth, currently held by the New York Mets.</p><p>The Giants made up major ground after falling to 7.5 games back in the Wild Card standings in late August. Prior to their 18-game hot streak the team was seven games under .500. With the victory over the Dodgers, San Francisco improved to 75-72 on the season.</p><p>The Dodgers’ loss snapped a four-game winning streak. It also marked another <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-fans-erupt-waste-yoshinobu-yamamoto-near-no-hitter">low point for the Dodgers’ bullpen</a>. While San Francisco is playing for a Wild Card berth, Los Angeles is in a tight division race with the San Diego Padres. Max Muncy was hit by a pitch on the right wrist. The Dodgers third baseman initially stayed in to run the bases. However, the two-way star has not pitched in a week, forcing Emmet Sheehan into a larger role. However, Dave Roberts hinted that he could take the mound against the Philadelphia Phillies.</p><p>Ohtani is still batting for the Dodgers, but the team has monitored his healthy closely throughout the season. The superstar spent the first half of the season recovering from Tommy John surgery that prevented him from pitching for the Dodgers last year. Since coming back, though, he has been as excellent as ever. However, his a setback saw Roberts shelf the pitcher again.</p><p>Los Angeles kicks off an important weekend series against the San Francisco Giants on Friday night. With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-dodgers-make-wrong-kind-history-since-1958-back-to-back-padres-losses">San Diego Padres lurking behind the Dodgers in the National League West</a>, every game is crucial to the team’s playoff hopes. According to The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya, Ohtani will not pitch in the series. Roberts is targeting a matchup with the Phillies next week.</p><p>“Shohei Ohtani will pitch either Monday or Tuesday against the Phillies, Dave Roberts said,” Ardaya reported.</p><p>Having Ohtani back on the mound would be huge for Roberts. Sheehan is currently the starter penciled in to start the series against Philadelphia. However, Los Angeles could easily slot Ohtani there instead if the All-Star is ready to go. San Francisco is competing for a postseason berth, giving the matchup against its division rival added significance. The team anticipated being shorthanded for the series opener after Matt Chapman was given a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-matt-chapman-suspension-rockies">one-game suspension</a>. But the Giants received a <a href="https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/matt-chapman-suspenion-appeal-ruling/1873944/" rel="noopener">positive update</a> prior to the matchup.</p><p>Chapman was successful in his appeal of the suspension, per NBC Sports Bay Area. The Commissioner’s Office agreed to drop the suspension and issue a fine instead. While the Giants third baseman was scheduled to miss Friday’s game against the Dodgers, the decision allows him to face LA.</p><h2><b>Matt Chapman cleared for Giants clash with Dodgers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Matt-Chapman-2.jpg"><figcaption>Stan Szeto-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>MLB issued the suspension after an incident involving the Colorado Rockies on September 2. Colorado starter Kyle Freeland didn’t like how Rafael Devers reacted after hitting a two-run homer in the first inning. As the two players shouted at each other, the benches cleared.</p><p>Chapman, sticking up for his teammate, ran to the mound and appeared to shove Freeland before an umpire separated them. The ninth-year veteran <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-matt-chapman-why-appealed-1-game-suspension">immediately appealed his suspension</a>, which allowed him to remain in the Giants lineup until a ruling was issued. Had the commissioner upheld the decision, Chapman would have been forced to miss Friday’s matchup against Los Angeles.</p><p>The Giants can’t afford to lose the five-time Gold Glove winner. While the team is eight games back in the division, San Francisco is only 1.5 games behind the New York Mets for the third Wild Card berth. The Giants are hoping to reach the postseason for the first time since 2021.</p><p>Chapman has overall been a steady presence for San Francisco in 2025. However he struggled at the start of August before landing on the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-matt-chapman-il-hand-injury">10-day IL with a hand injury</a>.</p><p>Since returning to the lineup on August 23, Chapman has been hot. The former All-Star is slashing .327/.441/.673 with five homers, 12 RBI and 15 runs over his last 17 games. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-francisco-giants/giants-news-matt-chapman-home-run-vs-cubs">Chapman joined the 200-home run club</a> in that stretch and is up to 21 long balls on the season.</p><p>The Giants are relying on Chapman for their playoff push. Bob Melvin and his ballclub are not the only ones who are bringing lofty ambitions with them to Oracle Park. Joey Chestnut is returning to the Bay Area with a big appetite and empty stomach.</p><p>The number one competitive eater in the world grew up in Vallejo, California and is excited to be back in a familiar place. He is not in attendance as strictly a fan, however. Chestnut is coming to the ballpark <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46227776/joey-chestnut-99-impossible-chicken-nuggets-nine-innings-giants-dodgers" rel="noopener">to complete the 99/9 challenge</a>, via ESPN’s Anthony Gharib. He will attempt to eat 99 Impossible Foods-brand nuggets across nine innings during Friday night’s NL West clash. One fan will qualify for the opportunity to battle this modern-day Goliath.</p><p>The 17-time Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest champion has broken many records and conquered many seemingly improbable feats during his legendary run. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/joey-chestnut-demolishes-three-fans-pierogi-eating-competition-cavs-game">dominated three fans in a pierogi competition</a> at a Cleveland Cavaliers game in March of 2024 and will look to reign supreme at a sporting event once again.</p><p>“I’ve done a lot of wild challenges over the years, but 99 nuggets in nine innings is a new one for me, and I’m fired up,” Chestnut said, per Gharib. Doing it back in the Bay where I grew up, at Oracle Park with the Giants, makes it even better,” Chestnut said. “I’m a big fan, and it feels like a home game! … I’ve been training, I’m feeling good, so 99 should go down no problem. Honestly, just talking about it is making me hungry. … I hope they’ve got a few extras ready.”</p><h2><b>Will the all-time great eater bring the Giants some extra luck?</b></h2><p>Joey Jaws’ affiliation with the plant-based Impossible Foods led to his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celebrity/joey-chestnut-working-on-returning-to-competition-after-ban">one-year ban from Nathan’s</a> Fourth of July festivities in 2024, but he has clearly maintained a strong working relationship with the company. Likewise, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-shohei-ohtani-outpaces-ken-griffey-jr-historic-run">Shohei Ohtani continues to break baseball records</a> and has remained the best hitter in baseball.</p><p>Although these megastars, along with Freddie Freeman, have done great work, there is work to do. Namely, there are three Dodgers players to watch, all of whom could play a pivotal role as the Dodgers attempt to repeat as champs.</p><p>Los Angeles is currently <a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/mlb?tab=world-series" rel="noopener">the favorite to win the World Series</a>, according to FanDuel. Conversely, it has not been the same prediction on DraftKings where they have the second-best odds. It’s been teetering back and forth all season. Despite any struggles, the consensus is that Los Angeles will at least make a deep run into the MLB playoffs.</p><p>The Dodgers currently have the third-best record in the National League. However, some things must happen for them to repeat as World Series champions. These are the three Dodgers players to watch and what needs to happen for success to come.</p><h2><b>Tanner Scott must improve on his recent performance</b></h2><p>It has been a mediocre season for Tanner Scott. Although <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-los-angeles-pitching-exemplified-new-mlb-record">the Dodgers’ rotation has been elite,</a> the bullpen has been far from it. Scott has been part of the problem, and he has struggled recently to perform consistently.</p><p>Scott is 1-3 with a 4.47 ERA with 21 saves. Yet he has not been the closer lately, mainly because Camilo Doval has been getting the save opportunities. Last weekend, Scott entered the game with the lead against the Arizona Diamondbacks and allowed three earned runs on three hits while walking one.</p><p>While the Dodgers eventually won, Scott did not make it easy, and that has been a recurring theme all season. The good news is that Scott was great in the MLB playoffs last season while pitching for the San Diego Padres. Significantly, he tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings.</p><p>Scott can still be an effective relief pitcher. But the Dodgers need him to be better than he has been all season. So far, the results have not been there, and he is part of a bullpen that ranks 19th in baseball with a 4.17 ERA.</p><h2><b>Teoscar Hernandez must bring the power with Mookie Betts</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Teoscar-Hernandez-hits-the-baseball.jpg"><figcaption>Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Even with all the power and juice the lineup brings, they still need more. Betts, Ohtani, and Freeman can only do so much by themselves. Will Smith is dealing with injuries, while Max Muncy is not the same player he once was. At the end of the day, that leaves Los Angeles with three above-average hitters. Then, there is Teoscar Hernandez.</p><p>Hernandez is batting .243 with 24 home runs, 81 RBIs, and 57 runs scored. Overall, he has been the type of player who can get streaky. When he’s hot, he is incredibly dangerous for the Dodgers. When he’s not, it can hurt them.</p><p>Hernandez hit .250 with three home runs, 12 RBIs, and eight runs in the 2024 MLB playoffs. What the Dodgers need is more consistency. Hernandez has gone through stretches, such as a series against the Kansas City Royals, where he did not get a single hit. Sadly, that has been the case too often.</p><p>The Dodgers will need Hernandez to help their big bats, especially if they face the Philadelphia Phillies or Milwaukee Brewers in the playoffs. If they cannot get these bats help, and if Hernandez struggles, there could be a new champion this season.</p><h2><b>Blake Treinen must regain confidence</b></h2><p>Going back to the bullpen, Blake Treinen is another bullpen arm who has struggled to pitch well consistently. Treinen is 1-3 with a 4.05 ERA. Recently, he blew a three-run lead that the offense and the starting pitching had given him.</p><p>Treinen sits in the middle of the bullpen. While he is not a closer or a setup man, his role is equally important. Imagine the Dodgers are in a critical playoff game against the New York Mets and the score is 2-2 in the sixth inning. When manager Dave Roberts calls on Treinen to preserve the tie, he expects him to pitch well with confidence. It’s worth noting that Treinen had nine consecutive appearances without allowing a run before his implosion. That means he is either boom or bust.</p><p>Treinen is at the center of a bullpen that has been bad this season. While the bullpen also struggled in the regular season in 2024, they were able to pitch well enough in the playoffs.
