The Astros have a lot of great players on their team currently, but who are the greatest Astros in the history of their franchise? Let’s answer that question and take a look at the ten best Astros players in their storied history and see why they find their way on this list.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><h2><b>10. Lance Berkman</b></h2><p>Position: Outfielder and First Base</p><p>Years with Astros: 1999-2010</p><p>Notable Accolades: Six-time NL All-Star</p><p>Lance Berkman was consistently regarded as one of the best players in the game during his time in Houston but never got the awards to justify his strong play. Berkman finished in the Top 7 for NL MVP voting in five seasons but never ended up winning the award.</p><p>Berkman was one of the best all-around hitters in the game during his time with the Astros, as he hit 20+ home runs in 10 straight seasons and had a batting average above .300 in four seasons. He eventually picked up a World Series ring after leaving the Astros, but his contributions to the franchise throughout his historic career will never be forgotten.</p><h2><b>9. Larry Dierker</b></h2><p>Position: Starting pitcher</p><p>Years with Astros: 1964-1976</p><p>Notable Accolades: Two-time NL All-Star, No-hitter on July 9, 1976, Astros Retired Number</p><p>Larry Dierker spent 12 years of his 13-year career with the Astros, and he turned himself into a true workhorse throughout his time in Houston. Dierker was never the best pitcher in the league, but he was a true innings-eater for them back in a day when starting pitchers had much longer leashes than they do nowadays.</p><p>Dierker eclipsed 200 total innings in six seasons and even pitched 305.1 innings in the 1969 season, which will go down as the best season of his career (20-13, 2.33 ERA, 232 K, 1.02 WHIP). He was never the best pitcher, but his consistency and longevity earns him a spot on this list.</p><h2><b>8. Jim Wynn</b></h2><p>Position: Outfielder</p><p>Years with Astros: 1963-1973</p><p>Notable Accolades: 1967 NL All-Star, Astros Retired Number</p><p>Jim Wynn was never the flashiest player, but he was so consistent that it never really mattered. He hit more than 20 home runs in seven of his 11 seasons with the Astros, and while he was a bit inconsistent when it came to his batting average, Wynn was an on-base machine thanks to his ability to constantly draw walks.</p><p>Wynn drew more than 100 walks in three seasons, and even led the league with 148 walks in 1969. His best season with Houston came in 1967 (.249 BA, 37 HR, 107 RBIs, 23 SB, .826 OPS) and while he had some strong seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers after he left the Astros, Wynn was still good enough to find his way onto this list.</p><h2><b>7. Jose Cruz</b></h2><p>Position: Outfielder</p><p>Years with Astros: 1975-1987</p><p>Notable Accolades: Two-time NL All-Star, Two-time Silver Slugger, Astros Retired Number</p><p>Jose Cruz was a bit of a late bloomer, as he didn’t really find his way until he landed with the Astros in his age 27 season back in 1975. Cruz gradually made himself an invaluable piece of the Astros lineup, and while he was never the flashiest player, he always managed to do his job and do it well.</p><p>Cruz never hit more than 17 home runs in a single season, but he was still able to make a big impact. He hit over .300 in six seasons and led the National League in hits in the 1983 season.</p><p>Cruz was also a speedster on the bases, as he stole at least 30 bases in five seasons. Cruz’s longevity certainly helps him here, but his overall strong play during his time in Houston makes him a worthy entrant on the greatest Astros list.</p><h2><b>6. Justin Verlander</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Alex-Bregman-Jose-Altuve-and-Justin-Verlander-at-World-Series-parade.jpg"><figcaption>Thomas Shea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Position: Starting Pitcher</p><p>Years with Astros: 2017-2023, 2024</p><p>Notable Accolades: Two-Time AL Cy Young, Three-Time All-Star, Two-time World Series champion (2017, 2022), 2017 ALCS MVP</p><p>Justin Verlander’s tenure in Houston might not have been all that long, but his impact on Astros history was enormous as the ace for both World Series champions in franchise history. He also won two Cy Young Awards in 2019 and 2022 to lead the Astros to the World Series both seasons.</p><p>Still, it was the postseason success that fans will remember most about Verlander’s run with the Astros as the team went to the postseason each year he was with the Astros. Verlander went 10-7 with a 3.74 ERA in the postseason for the Astros. This included going 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA to win 2017 ALCS MVP as the Astros beat the New York Yankees in seven games.</p><h2><b>5. Alex Bregman</b></h2><p>Position: Third Base</p><p>Years with Astros: 2016-2024</p><p>Notable Accolades: Two-time All-Star, Two-time World Series champion (2017, 2022), 2024 Gold Glove, 2018 All-Star Game MVP</p><p>Alex Bregman also was a huge part of the Astros dynasty as one of the best all-around players in MLB. Some views on Bregman are mixed since he had two huge offensive seasons early in his career before becoming just a solid but consistent offensive performer.</p><p>In 2018 Bregman broke out with 31 home runs and 103 RBIs along with a league-leading 51 doubles to earn his first All-Star berth. The following season, he had his best season for the Astros when he finished runner-up to future Hall of Famer Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels for AL MVP. Bregman finished with 41 homers and 112 RBIs along with a league-leading 119 walks.</p><p>Bregman had his ups and downs in the postseason. However, he batted .294/.379/.569 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 13 postseason games in 2022 to help lead the Astros to their second title.</p><h2><b>4. Billy Wagner</b></h2><p>Position: Relief Pitcher</p><p>Years with Astros: 1995-2003</p><p>Notable Accolades: 1999 NL Rolaids Relief Man Award, Three-time All-Star, Hall of Famer</p><p>Not many relievers will make these type of lists, but Billy Wagner will go down as one of the greatest relievers of all time as he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this summer and he will do so wearing an Astros cap. Wagner is the Astros’ all-time leader in saves (225) as well as hits allowed per nine innings pitched (5.942) and strikeouts per nine innings pitched (12.385).</p><p>Wagner’s best season came in 1999 when he won the Rolaids Relief Man Award for the National League. He went 4-1 with a 1.57 ERA and 39 saves. In 2003, Wagner set the franchise record for saves in a season with 44, which was matched by Jose Valverde in 2008.</p><h2><b>3. Jose Altuve</b></h2><p>Position: Second Base and Left Field</p><p>Years with Astros: 2011-Present</p><p>Notable Accolades: 2017 AL MVP, Nine-time All-Star (1 NL, 8 AL), Two-time World Series champion (2017, 2022), Seven-time Silver Slugger winner, Three Batting Titles, 2019 ALCS MVP</p><p>Jose Altuve seems destined to move up a few more spots on this list by the time his career is over. Altuve has been the leader of the Astros recent turnaround from one of the worst teams in the league to one of the best. During that time, he has established himself as the best second baseman in the league.</p><p>Altuve can hit for contact (seven seasons with a batting average above .300) and for power (six seasons with 20+ home runs) and has been the leader of the Astros, even amidst all their controversies.</p><p>What has set Altuve apart in Astros history is his postseason heroics. He has 27 home runs in 105 career postseason games, including an astounding seven in 13 games during the Astros’ 2017 run to their first title. Altuve had a 1.021 in those games.</p><p>In 2019, Altuve had a 1.097 OPS, including two home runs, to win ALCS MVP as the Astros eliminated the Yankees in six games. His biggest moment was a walk-off home run in Game 6 against Aroldis Chapman to send the Astros to the World Series.</p><h2><b>2. Craig Biggio</b></h2><p>Position: Second Base, Catcher, and Outfielder</p><p>Years with Astros: 1988-2007</p><p>Notable Accolades: Seven-time NL All-Star, Five-time Silver Slugger, Four-time Gold Glove winner, Hall of Famer</p><p>What many people often forget about Craig Biggio is that when he broke into the majors, he was actually a catcher for the Astros. Biggio of course found a more consistent home at second base, but he was never really more comfortable than he was at the plate with a bat in his hands.</p><p>Biggio always seemed to play, which was good because he always did damage at the plate. He was always more of a contact hitter throughout his career than a power hitter, but he did hit 20+ home runs in eight seasons, including in 2006 when he was 40 years old.</p><p>Biggio remained productive all the way up until his age 41 season in 2007, and while Houston went through some tough times with Biggio, they always rested easy knowing that he would show up and do his best to win when he was on the team.</p><h2><b>1. Jeff Bagwell</b></h2><p>Position: First Base</p><p>Years with Astros: 1991-2005</p><p>Notable Accolades: 1994 NL MVP, 1991 NL Rookie of the Year, Four-time NL All-Star, Three-time Silver Slugger, Hall of Famer</p><p>When all is said and done, Jeff Bagwell is a pretty easy choice for the greatest Astros player of all time. Altuve may make a charge to catch him, but Bagwell was consistently great throughout his entire career, all of which was spent with Houston, that there isn’t really any other choice here.</p><p>Bagwell’s outrageous 1994 season (.368 BA, 39 HR, 116 RBIs, 1.201 OPS) pretty much tells you all you need to know about him. He was an absolute nightmare for pitchers, as he always found his way on base.</p><p>Bagwell would constantly be one of the top names in the NL MVP race, and it’s a crime that he was only an All-Star four times. While the current Astros are certainly making their mark, when you think of the greatest Astros, Bagwell is always going to be the first name you associate with the team, earning him the top spot on this list.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Astros general manager Dana Brown says that McCullers could be <a href="https://www.si.com/mlb/astros/news/astros-boss-sets-goal-lance-mccullers-jr-return-starting-rotation" rel="noopener">back in the rotation</a> for an April 25-27 series against Kansas City, per Sports Illustrated.</p><p>That’s good news for Astros fans, and for a club looking to win the American League West. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/astros-news-lance-mccullers-jr-injury-return-2025-update">McCullers is a former All-Star who has been hampered by injuries</a>. The pitcher hasn’t thrown in a Major League Baseball game since 2022.</p><p>McCullers has pitched for the club since 2015. In his last season in 2022, the hurler posted a 2.27 ERA in eight starts. McCullers has a 47-32 career win-loss record, with a lifetime ERA of 3.48.</p><p>The hurler brings not only talent, but leadership to the clubhouse. McCullers was on two World Series championship teams in Houston. He was named an All-Star in 2017, when he won his first World Series.</p><p>The Astros are 6-8 on the season.</p><h2><b>Astros could use Lance McCullers in the rotation right now</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Astros-Jose-Altuve-catching-the-ball.jpg"><figcaption>© Troy Taormina-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>McCullers looked like he could be the ace of this Astros staff before getting hurt. The All-Star put together several solid seasons in the past. His career-high year came in 2021, when he picked up 13 victories. He posted a 3.16 ERA during that campaign, with 28 starts.</p><p>Houston has been patiently waiting for the pitcher’s return. It’s been more than two full seasons since he could take the mound in a MLB game. While a lot of other teams would have given up on a player in that time span, Houston has stood by McCullers.</p><p>Houston isn’t having much luck right now in terms of their pitching. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/astros-news-houston-roster-move-unfortunate-pitching-injury-spencer-arrighetti">The Astros are dealing with several other pitching injuries</a>, as Spencer Arrighetti is out. So are Luis Garcia and Cristian Javier. The Astros are a banged-up team in their pitching rotation.</p><p>McCullers has been working well in rehab starts. He did well in his last appearance, pitching four scoreless innings for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys. In those four innings, McCullers threw just 61 pitches. He also reached north of 90 miles per hour with some of his throws.</p><p>Astros fans are ready to see McCullers work on the mound again. Long before the final out was recorded, however, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-angels/fan-rips-foul-ball-out-of-angels-star-mike-trouts-glove">controversy found the right field seats</a>.</p><p>During the bottom of the second inning, catcher Yainer Diaz hit a foul ball that elicited strong reactions and had many people recalling <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-banned-fan-interfered-mookie-betts-breaks-silence-harassment">an infamous moment</a> in last year’s World Series. An Astros fan appeared to <a href="https://x.com/TalkinBaseball_/status/1911205867447521290" rel="noopener">rip the ball out of the glove</a> of future Hall of Famer Mike Trout, causing the longtime Angels outfielder to immediately protest. Ultimately, because the ball touched the spectator first, the at-bat continued. The fan did not get away completely unscathed, though.</p><p>The man and his son were relocated to another area in the stadium, much to the displeasure of the home crowd at Daikin Park. Many people will compare the situation to the incident that transpired in Yankee Stadium in Game 4 of the 2024 Fall Classic, when fans blatantly and gleefully yanked the baseball out of Mookie Betts’ glove. Two men were banned from all 30 MLB ballparks. Judging by the fan’s instantly apologetic reaction, the circumstances surrounding this snatch seem different.</p><p>The individual who prevented Trout from recording the third out of the inning (Diaz flied out anyway) <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6275187/2025/04/12/astros-fan-interference-mike-trout/" rel="noopener">explained what was going through his head</a> when retrieving the ball.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">Mike Trout is heated after an Astros fan took the ball out of his glove. It was coming at my son’s face. I just reached out.”</p><p>When watching the moment play out in real time, it is difficult to tell if the fan was instinctively pulling the ball out of Trout’s grasp. But he did react in swift dismay and even appeared to extend the ball out to the three-time MVP, as if to give it back to him. Mike Trout himself believed his intentions were pure, as he sought to clear the air with the man and his son.</p><p>And that’s that. People will still express their opinions, but both parties are moving forward. Trout and the Angels go home with a victory, and these two fans are now local celebrities. However, his transition over to left field has been quite the roller coaster so far, as, at times, the two-time World Series winner has struggled to begin the season.</p><p>Despite that, there is some optimism coming out of Houston. The Astros general manager Dana Brown recently opened up about Altuve playing left field. During an interview on “MLB Now” Brown claims that Altuve’s <a href="https://x.com/MLBNow/status/1910023654483845433" rel="noopener">“transition is going well.”</a> Overall, the Astros seem to like how the nine-time All-Star is developing as a left fielder and seem to believe he will only improve as the season progresses.</p><p>“The transition is going well. Mauricio Dubon and Brendan Rodgers have taken turns playing second base. The two of them allow Houston to figure out who is the better option while Altuve’s consistent bat remains in the lineup.</p><p>And that’s the superpower of Jose Altuve right now. Although he’s struggled a tad at left field, his plate appearances have been ultra-productive to begin the season. Although he’s recorded one error already, the former AL MVP winner has recorded a solid .340 batting average and .392 OBP while hitting three home runs and five RBIs through 47 at-bats.</p><p>With production like that, the Astros are seemingly willing to give Jose Altuve every opportunity to figure it out in the outfield. A move to designated hitter could be an option though, but Yordan Alvarez, who is one of the best hitters in baseball, holds that position down in Houston.</p><p>Altuve will have another chance to prove himself at left field on Wednesday when the Astros take on the Seattle Mariners in the third and final contest of a three-game series. The 2021 and 2022 champions, respectively, <a href="https://x.com/Chandler_Rome/status/1909764979181683071" rel="noopener">completed a trade</a> on Tuesday, hopeful they can turn their fortunes around early in the campaign.</p><p>Houston is sending right-hander Rafael Montero and cash considerations to Atlanta for a player to be named later, per the team’s X account. The 34-year-old, who was a former top prospect with the New York Mets, is 22-28 with a 4.71 ERA and 464 strikeouts in 466 1/3 innings during his career.</p><p>Montero was an integral component of the Astros’ bullpen during the 2022 championship season, recording a 2.37 ERA in 71 appearances. Though, the stellar yearlong production is an anomaly in an otherwise turbulent big-league tenure. Perhaps another change of scenery can help him return to being a dependable reliever.</p><h2><b>Braves look to Rafael Montero for some desperately-needed reinforcements</b></h2><p>The Dominican Republic native struggled in his first outing of the season, allowing two runs versus the San Francisco Giants, but he has since logged three scoreless innings. The Braves have already made a few minor trades during the 2025 campaign, as general manager Alex Anthopoulos seeks a quick and inexpensive fix following a 1-8 start.</p><p>Atlanta must find a way to stay afloat until stars Ronald Acuna Jr. and Spencer Strider <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/atlanta-braves/braves-news-ronald-acuna-jr-s-final-rehab-steps-hint-injury-return-timetable">return from the injured list</a>. Even if the lineup wakes up from its extended slumber, pitching depth is essential. Atlanta will keep trying out different hurlers until enough of them stick. Trusting wild cards to prevail is beyond risky, but at least this one comes with a World Series ring.</p><p>Rafael Montero will leave one reputable organization and head to another, eager to reclaim his mojo on the mound. He graduated from NYU in 2012 and still returns to serve as PA announcer and occasional broadcaster for the school’s basketball and volleyball teams.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Houston Astros</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Right-handed <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/houston-astros/astros-news-rookie-gives-4-word-warning-to-rest-of-mlb-after-dominant-start-vs-orioles">pitcher Spencer Arrighetti</a> joined the stable of injured Houston Astros starters on Tuesday when the team placed him on the 15-day injured list with a broken thumb.</p><p>It was a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/houston-astros/astros-news-pitcher-brutal-fluke-injury-batting-practice">hard luck injury for Arrighetti</a>, who took a <a href="https://www.mlb.com/astros/news/spencer-arrighetti-breaks-thumb-during-batting-practice" rel="noopener">line drive off his throwing hand</a> while playing catch in the outfield during batting practice Monday night. The Astros have called up Luis Contreras <a href="https://x.com/Chandler_Rome/status/1909723302173835267" rel="noopener">to take his spot</a> on the active roster, according to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome.</p><p>Arrighetti made two starts in 2025 before his injury, going 1-1 with a 5.59 ERA over 9.2 innings. Those numbers tell the story of two vastly different starts. Arrigheti was brilliant in his first start of the season, holding the New York Mets to a run on one hit with five strikeouts in six innings. His next start was shakier as he allowed five runs on five hits and three walks against the Minnesota Twins in 3.2 innings.</p><p>Arrighetti’s injury comes at a time when the Astros have several starters still working their way back from injury. JP France is due back around the All-Star break, while Cristian Javier and Luis Garcia are both rehabbing from major surgeries.</p><h2><b>Lance McCullers Jr. is nearing a return to the Astros</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Lance-McCullers-Jr.jpg"><figcaption>Troy Taormina-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Out of all the injured Astros starters, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/houston-astros/astros-news-lance-mccullers-jr-injury-return-2025-update">Lance McCullers Jr. might be closest to a return</a>. He hasn’t pitched in a regular season MLB game since 2022 as injuries and setbacks have kept him sidelined after he initially suffered a muscle strain in his right arm during 2023 spring training.</p><p>McCullers is, however, expected to make his third rehab start on Saturday for Triple-A Sugar Land. He got hit hard in his second rehab start, which he made last week in Double-A, allowing four runs on four hits with three walks in 1.2 innings.</p><p>But the most important part is that he got through it healthy. If all goes well on Saturday, it shouldn’t be long before he makes his Major League return.</p><p>Astros starters have a 4.64 ERA so far this season, good for 19th in the league.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

And now, they are watching their own players <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/astros-news-lance-mccullers-jr-injury-return-2025-update">suffer crazy fluke injuries</a>, as starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti is set to miss an extended period of time after breaking his thumb while playing catch in the outfield ahead of the Astros’ Monday night contest against the Seattle Marines.</p><p>Arrighetti made his major league debut in 2024, and while he posted a mediocre 4.53 earned run average, he flashed his potential on several occasions, finishing the season with 171 strikeouts over 145 innings of work. There were plenty of discouraging reports during Spring Training regarding Altuve’s performance in the outfield, but through the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/houston-astros/astros-news-ex-mlb-player-mark-derosa-snore-response-jose-altuve">first few games of the Astros’ season</a>, Altuve has shown himself to be quite the capable defender in his new position — at least based on advanced metrics.</p><p>However, there is one major outfield defense skill that Altuve is <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6257873/2025/04/05/jose-altuve-left-field-twins/" rel="noopener">yet to get a full grasp of,</a> and that is the glove-to-hand exchange that most veteran outfielders have down pat.</p><p>“They’ve been really making an emphasis on catching the ball and making the transfer right in front of you, and I keep going back to transfer,” Altuve said, per Chandler Rome of The Athletic.</p><p>Altuve needed to find a new defensive home, what with his defensive numbers at second base being on the decline over the past few years. And after his move to left field was met with much skepticism, the veteran is showing that there might very well be a second wind to his career.</p><p>It’s early days anyway in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/houston-astros/astros-news-jose-altuve-reacts-web-gem-after-gaffe-left-field">Altuve’s life at left field</a>, and he’s been hard at work at making sure that he plays not just passable, but solid defense for an Astros team that needs nearly everything to go in their favor to continue their streak of making the playoffs.</p><p>“We’re putting in a lot of work, and we’re working on everything now: fly balls, line drives, groundballs. I’m feeling slowly better out there. You can tell by the way I’ve been catching fly balls. I think at the end we’re going to keep working and keep getting better,” Altuve added.</p><h2>Jose Altuve draws rave reviews from Astros for work in left field</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Jose-Altuve-cover.jpg"></figure><p>Jose Altuve is 34 years of age and hasn’t played left field in a serious capacity in quite a while, so it was a big ask from the Astros for the veteran to transition to a new position. But on Thursday afternoon at Target Field, the Astros second-baseman-turned-left-fielder experienced a first…and not a good one.</p><p>For the first time in his 15-year MLB career, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/astros-news-jose-altuve-new-strikeout-low-vs-twins">Altuve struck out five times in a single game</a>. The moment was so unusual that even Darren McCaughan, the Twins reliever who sealed Altuve’s fate in the ninth inning, <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/jose-altuve-s-fifth-strikeout-excites-twins-crowd" rel="noopener">was caught off guard</a> by the intensity of the crowd reaction.</p><p>“I figured the crowd was going crazy for a reason,” McCaughan said. “I saw him strike out a few times. I didn’t know the exact number on it.”</p><p>Despite the Astros holding a comfortable 5-2 lead late in the game, fans at the Twins’ home opener came alive for a rare spectacle — Altuve swinging and missing. The former MVP entered the game with a career strikeout rate of just 12.8%, and only two previous four-strikeout games on his résumé. But Twins pitching had his number.</p><h2><b>Twins beat Astros as Jose Altuve lets his bat swing wild</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Jose-Altuve-1.jpg"><figcaption>Jordan Johnson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Starter Joe Ryan got Altuve twice with sweepers early, and reliever Jorge Alcala blew a 99 mph fastball past him for a fourth K in the seventh. Then came McCaughan, a 29-year-old journeyman with only a handful of big-league innings to his name, stepping into the ninth with the crowd behind him.</p><p>“First time I haven’t been able to hear the PitchCom out there,” McCaughan said. “That was kind of new.”</p><p>McCaughan got ahead 0-2 quickly. Altuve battled, taking it to a full count, but on the seventh pitch, McCaughan landed a sinker on the outside edge. Altuve froze, the umpire rang him up, and strikeout No. 5 was in the books.</p><p>After the game, Altuve <a href="https://x.com/Chandler_Rome/status/1908638627304710450" rel="noopener">kept it real</a>: “I like swinging,” he said via Chandler Rome on X. “Sometimes I try to swing at my pitch, sometimes I swing at everything.” Honesty like that is rare — and fitting. Altuve’s aggressiveness at the plate has long been both his weapon and his occasional weakness. On Thursday, it tilted heavily toward the latter.</p><p>Still, the Astros won, and as rough as the individual performance looked, Altuve isn’t likely to dwell too long. He’s been one of the most consistent hitters of his generation, and five strikeouts — even if it’s a first — don’t erase that. McCaughan, meanwhile, may never forget the moment. Not only did he silence one of baseball’s best, but he also delivered a memory to 36,000 roaring Twins fans.</p><p>“I wanted [the 2-2 pitch], but I think it was a ball,” McCaughan said postgame. “Three-two, I don’t know. Looked good to me.” Ball or strike, it was a win for McCaughan, a loss for Altuve’s stat line, and a strange, loud chapter in a long MLB career.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
