I’ll retire right on the spot if that happens. I’m not crazy. Never again.”</p><p>Chapman didn’t go into great detail about why he wouldn’t play for the Yankees again. He did say though that he didn’t feel appreciated there.</p><p>“I dealt with a lot of disrespect [with the Yankees],” Chapman said. “I put up with a lot of things. I knew that they just wanted to find a way to get rid of me, but they didn’t know how. And I just dealt with it quietly, kept playing, and doing what I always do.”</p><p>The well-traveled reliever, who put in some great performances against the Yankees this season, said he had no problem with Yankees players or coaches.</p><p>“I got along well with all the players,” Chapman said. “Never had a problem with anybody, even the manager. We’re friends and we talk and everything. It was another early playoff loss for a Yankees organization that is still trying to capture its first World Series title since the 2009 season.</p><p>Many are expecting the Yankees to look to make some considerable changes this offseason, including potential tweaks to its pitching staff.</p><p>Recently, Aroldis Chapman, who played for the Yankees previously in his career and had some big moments, but also some big letdowns, spoke on his interest, or lack thereof, in a <a href="https://x.com/TalkinYanks/status/1982836075052847408" rel="noopener">reunion with New York.</a></p><p>“No way, not even dead… if I were told that I was being traded to New York, I’d pack my things and go home. While it seems counterintuitive for Cincinnati to move a pitcher under team control through 2029 who posted a 2.76 ERA with 132 strikeouts in 107.2 innings during the 2025 season, the Yankees can’t afford to let this opportunity slip away.​</p><p>Greene’s durability concerns—he’s never made 27 starts or pitched 160 innings in a single season—might give the Reds pause about his long-term viability as a workhorse ace. But for a Yankees rotation desperately seeking reliable starting pitching behind Gerrit Cole, who missed all of 2025 recovering from Tommy John surgery, Greene represents exactly the kind of high-ceiling talent that could anchor their staff for the next several years. His six-year, $53 million extension signed in 2023 makes him a cost-controlled asset, paying him just $6 million in 2025 before escalating to $8 million in 2026 and $15 million in 2027. Replacing those important positions should be the goal of any Harper trade. They should be focused on getting the best possible prospects to get back to the World Series quickly with this trade. Trading a two-time MVP should net a package that can reach that goal.</p><p>When they call the Yankees, the Phillies will ask for Cam Schlittler. The<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-cam-schlittler-6-word-message-red-sox-fans-social-media-chirps"> 24-year-old rookie dominated the Boston Red Sox in Game 3</a> of the Wild Card Series and was great against the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 4 of the ALDS. A newly minted superstar has been born on the Yankee Stadium mound, and the Phillies should absolutely ask.</p><p>But the Yankees should hang onto Schlittler and offer either Luis Gil or Will Warren, two more young homegrown arms. The Phillies would then pluck many of the top prospects from the Yankees’ pipeline for Harper. This trade would be expensive, as Harper has six years left on his deal.</p><p>The Yankees have a young, left-handed first baseman who would be one of the top pieces in the trade. Trading for Harper may make keeping Bellinger impossible, which could also be a non-starter.</p><p>If the Yankees do not make the trade, they will be able to keep Rice and re-sign Bellinger. After nearly snagging the AL East title for the Blue Jays after Juan Soto left, they may run it back, hoping for better results. But the Yankees fans are frustrated with the October struggles, and a trade could help fix that.</p><p>The Yankees have been more focused on building a solid defense since the embarrassment of Game 5 of the 2024 World Series. That is part of the reason Bellinger was a great fit. Harper, despite first base being the second position of his MLB career, has been an above-average fielder since moving over there. Rice is not a great fielder at first or catcher, so this could be a defensively-minded trade as well.</p><p>The Yankees could trade for Harper, put all of the pressure on 2026, and hope he figures out his own postseason problems. Or, they could re-sign Bellinger, try to develop Rice into a great defensive first baseman, and get their pitching staff healthy. It was good enough for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-cody-bellinger-25-million-contract-option-decision">Bellinger to opt out of his contract</a>, which would have paid him $52.5 million over the next two seasons.</p><p>It’s no secret that the Yankees love Bellinger, and insider Joel Sherman <a href="https://x.com/nypostsports/status/1980737290927239218" rel="noopener">believes the team will</a> “probably do what they can” to bring him back in 2026.</p><p>“[He] fits them well and I think is an exceptional player,” he said in a video for the New York Post.</p><p>He also reminded fans that, while Bellinger had a resurgent season in 2025, the Los Angeles Dodgers non-tendered him in 2022 after his career appeared to crater. He then had one great year and one subpar year with the Chicago Cubs.</p><p>“He was so bad after being an MVP for [the Dodgers] that they non-tendered him,” Sherman said. “Last offseason, a Scott Boras client opted into his contract, in Cody Bellinger, which meant that he was concerned that he could not get a good deal in the marketplace.”</p><p>Now, Sherman seemed mystified at what <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/3-teams-that-could-steal-cody-bellinger-from-yankees-free-agency">teams might offer Bellinger</a>.</p><p>“Does that mean he gets [five years, $110 million]?” he asked. “Or does that mean, h*ll, he outplayed Kyle Tucker this year, and he gets [eight years, $240 million]?”</p><p>That question may determine whether Bellinger stays in pinstripes. The Yankees’ American League pennant defense fell short in the ALDS as Max Fried and Carlos Rodon turned in subpar performances at the worst possible time, but both are still All-Stars, and Fried will get his share of real estate on Cy Young ballots.</p><p>They’re also getting Gerrit Cole back in 2026 and can add him into a rotation that also includes — in addition to Fried and Rodon — breakout star Cam Schlittler, 2024 Rookie of the Year Luis Gil and, eventually, a post-Tommy John Clarke Schmidt.</p><p>The Yankees will instead focus on their frighteningly inconsistent bullpen and their lineup around captain Aaron Judge.</p><p>So why <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-rumors-dodgers-yankees-unlikely-pursue-dylan-cease-suitor-list-long">should New York go after Dylan Cease</a>?</p><p>First of all, there’s the obvious. They say you can never have too much starting pitching, and the Yankees know that better than anyone. Cease specifically should be a tantalizing option for an organization that wants to toe the line between being payroll-conscious and aggressive in free agency.</p><h2><b>Dylan Cease hits free agency at an awkward time</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Padres-pitcher-Dylan-Cease.jpg"><figcaption>Matt Marton-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While Cease might not be the best all-around starting pitcher on the market in 2025, there’s an argument that he could provide the most bang for a club’s buck — and that’s the quality the modern Yankees covet.</p><p>The upside that Cease brings is as good as anybody’s. He has twice finished in the top-five in Cy Young voting and twice led the league in strikeouts per nine innings, and that’s from four separate years. He has also been one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-dylan-cease-hits-mark-5th-straight-season">most dependable pitchers in baseball</a>, starting at least 30 games in all five of his complete MLB seasons.</p><p>The best season of his career came in the American League, as well. In 2022, he had a 2.20 ERA in 32 starts, striking out 227 batters in 184 innings pitched with the Chicago White Sox.</p><p>That should all add up to a massive contract, and make no mistake: Cease is going to get paid handsomely. But he’s also coming off of arguably the worst season of his career and is entering his age 30 season. His ERA+ (94) put him slightly below league average, but his FIP (3.56) shows luck may account for part of that.</p><p>These are all variables his suitors will need to take into account.</p><h2><b>Dylan Cease’ potential contract value with the Yankees</b></h2><p>Spotrac projects Cease to be <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/player/_/id/28208/dylan-cease" rel="noopener">worth just north of $26.4 million per year</a> and projects a six-year, $158.5 million contract in free agency. It’s unlikely the Yankees would want to commit that many years to Cease considering Cole, Fried and Rodon are all under contract into their late 30s.</p><p>That might not be a problem. We’ve seen a trend in recent years of players waiting out free agency, not getting what they want and signing a one-year deal somewhere as an audition for something bigger the next offseason. The Yankees don’t need to only offer Cease one year, but they can give him an opt-out after the first year if he has a strong season.</p><p>A qualifying offer in 2025 is worth $22.02 million and the Padres will almost certainly extend one to Cease, who will almost certainly decline.</p><p>Using that as a baseline, if Cease is still available with no team willing to offer him something long-term, it would make sense for New York to swoop in.</p><p>The should offer him a <b>four-year contract worth $100 million ($25 million AAV)</b> with an opt-out after year one.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Williams, a free agent, posted a 4.79 earned run average during the 2025 regular season. In the postseason, Williams appeared in four games and didn’t allow an earned run.</p><p>It is expected that Williams’ uneven season may lead to him receiving less money in a new contract than many expected in the past.</p><p>“Given Williams’s stature in the game and likely deflated price tag, the Marlins surely won’t be the only team interested in his services. He’s indicated a willingness to stick with the Yankees even after a tough year this season, and virtually every team in baseball tends to be in the market for relief help every winter,” Nick Deeds wrote for MLB Trade Rumors.</p><p>Miami just finished a disappointing season as well, posting a losing record. Miami was 79-83 on the campaign. In two games against Toronto, Williams posted three total strikeouts while allowing just two hits.</p><p>Yankees management <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/10/16/sports/yankees-brian-cashman-doubles-down-on-aaron-boone-support/" rel="noopener">is standing by</a> their beleaguered manager.</p><p>“I think he’s a good manager,” team general manager Brian Cashman said of Boone, per the New York Post. “I think he’s one of the better managers. In this environment, if he was out there right now, he’d get a job probably quickly. But I also know, because of our environment, he’s someone that can be second-guessed 10 million times over. He was reportedly involved in a motorcycle accident in Venezuela earlier this month, suffering severe internal injuries and falling into a medically induced coma before passing away.</p><p>Montero’s death brings sorrowful closure to the life of a player once heralded as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/youngest-mlb-players-to-debut">one of baseball’s brightest young talents</a>. Signed by New York out of Guacara, Venezuela, in 2006 for a $1.6 million bonus at just 16 years old, Montero advanced through the minors with remarkable speed. His offensive ability made him one of the most highly regarded prospects of his generation.</p><p>Over the 2008–2010 span, Montero’s offensive output validated his status as one of the game’s premier prospects. As an 18-year-old in Low-A ball, he batted .326 with 17 home runs and 34 doubles in 132 games. The following year, he hit .337/.389/.562 across High-A and Double-A levels. By 2010, Baseball America ranked him the No. 3 prospect in baseball, trailing only Bryce Harper and Mike Trout.</p><p>In 2011, Montero hit .289 with 21 home runs for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before making his long-awaited major league debut that September. In just 18 games with the Yankees, the 21-year-old impressed immediately, slashing .328/.406/.590 with four homers. He even appeared in the AL Division Series against the Detroit Tigers, going 2-for-2 with an RBI in Game 4.</p><p>That offseason, in a stunning move, the Yankees traded Montero and pitcher Hector Noesi to the Seattle Mariners for right-hander Michael Pineda and prospect Jose Campos. The results of the series did not surprise many observers. The Blue Jays had caught and passed the Yankees in the standings in late June and they won the division title because they had dominated the Yankees in their head to head matchup.</p><p>While the Yankees had one of the most dynamic hitters in Aaron Judge in the No. 2 spot in their lineup and the team demonstrated the ability to hit the long ball, the Blue Jays were simply a better all-around team. They hit better, fielded better and pitched better.</p><p>Prior to losing to the Blue Jays, the Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card series. While the Red Sox had suffered some critical injuries during the season, they also had an advantage over the Yankees in the regular-season series.</p><p>The Red Sox improved quite a bit from the previous year, and the Yankees have to be concerned with their ancient rivals going forward. However, the Yankees could make a move in free agency that would strengthen their team and weaken the Red Sox. They could sign 3rd baseman Alex Bregman to a four-year, $160 million contract.</p><h2><b>Bregman opts out of Red Sox deal</b></h2><p>The Red Sox 3rd baseman signed with the team shortly before the start of spring training. He had been unsigned through the majority of the offseason before inking a 3-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox. That contract allowed Bregman to opt out of the deal after Year 1 or Year 2 and go back on the open market.</p><p>A little more than a week after the Red Sox saw their season come to an end against the Yankees, Bregman announced that he would be take the option to get out of of his deal.</p><p>“Obviously, Alex has the right, as structured in his contract, to opt out and he’s going to do what’s best for his family,” <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2025/10/14/sports/alex-bregman-optout-red-sox/">Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow</a> told the <i>Boston Glob</i>e. “I will not miss an opportunity to talk about his contributions on the field, in the clubhouse, to the coaching staff, to the front office. Every conversation we’ve had, I learned something. I think that impact and influence has rubbed off on his teammates, and by all accounts, he’s loved his time in Boston as well.”</p><p>Bregman had been a solid addition for the Red Sox in 2025. Bregman’s season was damaged by missing nearly 50 games after he suffered a strain of his right quadriceps muscle in May.</p><p>Bregman worked diligently to return from the injury, but he was not playing at full speed until at least a month after his return.</p><p>Bregman was an excellent addition to Alex Cora’s batting order and the Red Sox locker room. However, if they are unable to bring him back, the move will have backfired because they ended up trading away Devers and his power bat was definitely missed.</p><p>Yankees vice president Brian Cashman has to be giving Bregman’s status strong consideration as he contemplates the moves to make during the offseason.</p><h2>Yankees could use Bregman’s skill at 3rd base</h2><p>Yankee Stadium would appear to be a less attractive environment for a right-handed hitter than Fenway Park, but the dimensions of the stadium have become more favorable over the years.</p><p>Bregman has played in Houston and Boston throughout his career and those two stadiums are quite favorable for right-handed hitters. A true professional like Bregman should be able to make the adjustment to Yankee Stadium if he signs a contract to play for manager Aaron Boone.</p><p>He would represent a major improvement at third base for the Yankees. That team acquired Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies at the trade deadline.</p><p>After he was traded to the Yankees, McMahon was just ordinary. He slashed .208/.308/.333 with 4 home runs and 18 runs batted in during his 54 games with the Bronx Bombers.</p><p>The Yankees have the capital to sign a star like Bregman. He should not expect any team to offer more than the $40 million salary he received last year. However, the Red Sox were only willing to give him three years. If he wants, Cashman could choose to make an offer for Philadelphia Phillies star Nick Castellanos.</p><p>Castellanos has been a key piece of the Phillies’ roster since joining it in 2022. However, he is one of many players that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/phillies-rumors-heres-how-desperate-philly-will-be-trade-nick-castellanos">Philadelphia could decide to move on from</a> this winter. The outfielder fell out of the starting lineup in the postseason, leading many to ask when he will be traded, not if. Despite his shortcomings, he will have plenty of suitors on the trade market.</p><p>Both the Yankees and Phillies saw their seasons come to disappointing ends. Each contender lost 3-1 in the Divisional Series to teams that simply overpowered them. Despite the losses, though, both New York and Philadelphia figure to be back in the inner circle of contenders heading into the 2026 regular season. However, there is a lot of pressure on each front office to make moves.</p><p>Castellanos’ time with the Phillies is rapidly coming to an end. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/phillies-news-bryce-harper-kyle-schwarber-jt-realmuto-return">Bryce Harper wants Philadelphia to do everything it can to retain J.T. Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber</a> this winter. In order to do that, the team will have to sacrifice elsewhere, likely by moving off of Castellanos’ bloated contract. The Yankees are one of few teams able to absorb one of the league’s more questionable contracts.</p><p>The Phillies will not get as much for Castellanos as they want. However, the outfielder could still fetch a good price. The righty is a major downgrade defensively, but New York could use him as a designated hitter, splitting his time with Giancarlo Stanton in both spots in the lineup.</p><p>Left field is the last piece of the puzzle for both New York and Philadelphia to fill out. Each team lost their ace pitcher in 2025 and paid the price in the postseason. Despite disappointing ends to successful campaigns, neither team is giving up on their championship window. His production was not good enough to overshadow his drama off the field.</p><p>The offseason is a time for tough decisions. Teams can’t win a championship in the winter, but they can easily lose one.
