With the team aiming to make some changes to the roster, president of baseball operations and general manager, AJ Preller, was asked about <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-rumors-fernando-tatis-jr-trade-fantasy-check">Fernando Tatis Jr.’s potential availability</a> in the trade market.</p><p>Preller <a href="https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/12/10/anything-can-still-happen-after-quiet-winter-meetings-for-padres-except/" rel="noopener">shut down any notions</a> of the Padres possibly trading Tatis, according to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Preller very clearly has no intentions of dealing the 26-year-old outfielder away.</p><p>“He’s somebody that we’re not talking about,” Preller said. “However, you want to say that; if you want to say that’s ‘untouchable,’ you can say that.”</p><p>Fernando Tatis Jr. has arguably the best season of his career in 2025. Although he has yet to reach the 42 home run mark he hit in 2021, the three-time All-Star still played incredibly well. Tatis finished the campaign with a .268 batting average and .368 OBP while recording 159 hits, 25 home runs, and 71 RBIs. He also stole 32 bases and played in 155 games, which are both career-highs.</p><p>With production like that, it would be a bit shocking if San Diego were to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-rumors-san-diego-has-no-plans-trade-fernando-tatis-jr">trade Fernando Tatis Jr.</a> The Padres seemingly want to build around Tatis in the hopes of making a deeper run in the playoffs in 2026.</p><p>The 14-year, $340 million contract he signed in 2021 indicates the Padres plan to keep him for the long haul. The 2026 campaign will only be the sixth year of the deal. So, based on the contract and AJ Preller’s recent comments, we should expect to see Fernando Tatis Jr. playing for this for quite some time.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

That guy has accomplished so many things in our game… The work that he puts in, how articulate he is and how detailed he is with what he does on a daily basis, he’s going to come back from this injury. A deal involving the right-hander is not considered likely — San Diego would require a steep return in exchange for losing Pivetta — but the team’s options for rebalancing its payroll are limited,” Dennis Lin reported.</p><p>This news certainly came out of nowhere. Pivetta is the best pitcher that the Friars have. The team lost Dylan Cease to the Toronto Blue Jays early in the offseason, and Michael King is a free agent. King could return to the Padres, but there is a chance that he takes a big contract elsewhere. Joe Musgrove is returning from his Tommy John absence, and Yu Darvish will miss the season after undergoing UCL surgery. The Padres’ rotation is a mess.</p><p>Pivetta was one of the best pitchers in the league last season. He posted a 2.87 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 5.3 WAR with 13 wins. He struck out 190 batters in 181.2 innings. He had an opponent batting average of .194 and a .253 OOBP. Hitters struggled all season long trying to get to Pivetta. He gave the Padres a ton of dominant innings.</p><p>Despite his dominance, the Padres could still trade their top starter. Whether they trade Skubal or not, the Tigers have a chance to get some insurance by trading for Pivetta. The Tigers have a ton of talent capable of going back to San Diego for a blockbuster trade that are not expensive.</p><p>As of now, only Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize, and Troy Melton are listed as starting pitchers on the 40-man roster. On Wednesday, the <a href="https://x.com/afkostka/status/1993743011399004197?s=46" rel="noopener">Orioles made a shocking hire</a>.</p><p>Former San Diego <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-mike-shildt-exiting-san-diego-his-terms-playoff-disappointment">Padres manager Mike Shildt retired</a> right after the 2025 season, which they lost to the Chicago Cubs in the NL Wild Card. There were many reasons for his sudden retirement, but a part of his decision remains true. When Shildt retired, he mentioned that the toll of the season and health issues caused him to retire from being a big league manager. He never said he wouldn’t get back into coaching, but he made it clear that, for at least right now, Shildt does not want to manage.</p><p>The Orioles are bringing in Shildt as an upper-level coordinator for the minor leagues.</p><p>“The Orioles are hiring former Padres manager Mike Shildt as their upper level minor league coordinator of instruction, source confirms. And Samuel Vega is the lower level coordinator.”</p><p>So, Shildt will continue not to coach, but will stay involved in the MLB by helping the Orioles build a stronger farm system.
