His usual catcher, Jake Rogers, was a late scratch from the lineup, meaning it was the first time since 2023 that the 2024 AL Cy Young winner threw to any other catcher.</p><p>Rogers, who caught Skubal’s last 37 starts, has left oblique tightness and the Tigers have since placed him on the 10-day Injured List.</p><p>Skubal has had a rough start to the 2025 season after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-news-insiders-think-tarik-skubal-best-pitcher-over-paul-skenes">winning the pitching triple crown</a> last year, leading the league in wins, ERA and strikeouts. Coming into Tuesday, he was 0-2 with a 5.91 ERA as his walk rate jumped and strikeout rate dropped.</p><p>But it’s early in the season and two starts is hardly a reason to panic. And after Paul Goldschmidt and Ben Rice reached to start the game for New York on Tuesday, Skubal calmly struck out reigning MVP Aaron Judge as the first of 15 straight batters he retired.</p><h2><b>Tigers recall Tomas Nido after Jake Rogers suffers oblique injury</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Jake-Rogers.jpg"><figcaption>Steven Bisig-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>With Rogers headed to the 10-day IL, the team has recalled Tomas Nido from Triple-A Toledo to replace him.</p><p>Nido has spent the bulk of his MLB career with the New York Mets, serving as a backup catcher from 2017 to 2024, when New York released him midseason. He then caught on with the Chicago Cubs, where he spent the rest of the season, and signed with the Tigers over the winter.</p><p>With Dillon Dingler likely shifting to the starting role in Rogers’ absence, Nido should play sparingly as his backup. Dingler has already made the most of his opportunity, homering for the Tigers in Tuesday afternoon’s game. He was 6-19 in 2025 coming into the game with a triple and homer.</p><p>As for Nido, he’s known as an excellent defensive catcher, though he’s never really hit in the majors. But backup catchers aren’t coveted for their hitting. Baseball Savant rates him as having an <a href="https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/tomas-nido-621512?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb" rel="noopener">exception pop time</a> and ability to catch runners stealing. Compare that to his career averages of .224 and .702, respectively. His struggles were enough to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-spencer-torkelson-breaks-silence-on-losing-starting-spot">cost him his starting job</a>.</p><p>Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris was on MLB Network on Monday <a href="https://twitter.com/MLBNow/status/1909312971232158025" rel="noopener">where he raved</a> about Torkelson’s performance so far.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">"This isn't just early, batted ball luck — he's made real tangible changes."</p><p>Tigers President of Baseball Ops. He’s hitting the ball a lot harder, he’s getting to pitches that he wasn’t getting to in recent years.”</p><p>But it goes deeper than what you read in the box score. Torkelson made changes to his approach in the offseason, Harris said, and he’s reaping the rewards.</p><p>“This isn’t just early batted ball luck,” he continued. “He’s made real tangible changes. He’s a little narrower in the box, he’s much more athletic. And his swing is allowing him to translate his talent into performance at a much more consistent level.”</p><p>The finest moment of the young season so far for Torkelson came on Sunday when he hit a walk-off double to beat the Chicago White Sox, 4-3. It was his 11th hit of the season and the sixth that went for extra bases.</p><p>More importantly, it capped a three-run ninth inning to give the Tigers their <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/spencer-torkelson-hits-walk-off-double-tigers-sweep-white-sox?game_pk=778433" rel="noopener">third win in a row</a>.</p><p>“We’re never out of it,” Torkelson said, via Jason Beck of MLB.com. “We feel like we have a chance as long as we keep the line moving, put together good at-bats and have a really selfless approach at the plate. I think that was the perfect example today.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-aj-hinch-proud-spencer-torkelson-after-making-opening-day-roster">Manager AJ Hinch</a> echoed Torkelson’s sentiment.</p><p>“It’s not easy, because I was just hoping that the guys weren’t going to try to play hero,” he said. “Just keep passing the baton, keep putting up good at-bats. An additional woman, who worked for Major League Baseball but not the Tigers, told The Athletic that she received lewd photos from Menzin in 2018 or 2019 as well.</p><p>Tigers Compliance &amp; Investigation Business Partner Danny Rosengard was in contact with women in the organization as recently as last week as part of the investigation.</p><p>“Upon being made aware of the allegations as to Sam Menzin’s conduct, the club promptly completed an investigation. Before the club could terminate Mr. Menzin, he resigned,” the team said in a statement. “This type of behavior is contrary to our standards and has absolutely no place within our organization. We have a positive and safe culture for our colleagues and will continue to emphasize respect, inclusion, and professionalism.”</p><p>Menzin himself did not respond to phone calls from The Athletic but said in a text message that he plans to return to New York and seek a career change.</p><p>Menzin spent 13 years in the Tigers’ organization, starting as a baseball operations intern and rising through the ranks to become an assistant GM in 2021.</p><p>Though The Athletic reports that Menzin’s alleged lewd photos date back to at least 2017, the culture in the Tigers’ front office may have dissuaded women from coming forward. With how few women worked in the front office at the time, one woman said, “it always felt like saying something wasn’t an option.”</p><p>“It’s like no one says anything because who is going to believe them when they say Sam Menzin did this?” she added. “It’s not like a bat boy or security guard. It’s Sam Menzin.”</p><p>Menzin was reportedly with the Tigers through spring training and the team’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-aj-hinch-proud-spencer-torkelson-after-making-opening-day-roster">season-opening road trip</a>. Confidence remained high even after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-aj-hinch-perfect-response-beating-astros-playoffs">the momentous run</a> finally ended in the American League Division Series, because people knew what was on the horizon. Besides the promising talent that brims the MLB roster, the Tigers boast an abundance of young talent in their farm system.</p><p>Unfortunately, though, one of their brightest prospects will be out of action. Infielder Kevin McGonigle, the No. 37 selection in the 2023 MLB Amateur Draft, <a href="https://x.com/jonmorosi/status/1909068035308081420" rel="noopener">suffered an ankle injury</a>, per Jon Morosi. The extent of the setback is still unknown, but he is “expected to miss time.”</p><p>McGonigle is one of five players in the organization on <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects">MLB’s top 100 prospect list</a>, notably ranking 27th. He raked in spring training, batting .400 with one home run and three RBIs in 10 at-bats. The 20-year-old shortstop is still only playing at the High-A level, so a big-league arrival does not appear imminent. He could face an even longer wait following this latest injury news.</p><p>When healthy, McGonigle has illustrated why he is regarded as the best pure hitter in the Tigers’ system. The Pennsylvania native was quickly rising up the prospect ranks, and he will look to continue his ascent when ready.</p><p>While McGonigle recovers from his ankle issue, the Tigers will try to enjoy an auspicious first half to the 2025 season.</p><h2><b>Will the Tigers build on their successful 2024?</b></h2><p>They have bounced back nicely after dropping three games to the Los Angeles Dodgers, taking two of three versus the Seattle Mariners and sweeping the Chicago White Sox this past weekend. Detroit welcomes in the New York Yankees (6-3) for a three-game set, starting on Monday afternoon.</p><p>All-Star Riley Greene and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-detroit-spencer-torkelson-2025-season">former No. 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson</a> lead a deceptively dangerous lineup, while reigning American League Cy Young and pitching Triple Crown winner Tarik Skubal headlines a starting rotation that could pose a clear threat when at full force. Detroit’s resurgence does not have to merely be a 2024 memory. The Tigers have recalled utility man Justyn-Henry Malloy from Triple-A Toledo <a href="https://x.com/DetroitTigersPR/status/1906819159020777722" rel="noopener">to replace him</a>.</p><p>Torres seemed to aggravate his oblique while hitting a home run on Friday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He left the game early and did not play the rest of the series. He revealed after the game that the area had been sore the previous few days but he had been able to play through it.</p><p>The Tigers have yet to provide a timeline for Torres’ return as of this writing, but he will be eligible to come off the injured list next Tuesday while his new team is visiting his old team in New York. For now, however, it seems unlikely that Torres would be able to play in that series as oblique injuries tend to cost hitters more than the minimum 10 days.</p><p>Through his first two games with the Tigers, the career New York Yankee was hitting .429 with a homer, two runs scored and a stolen base.</p><p>The Tigers signed him in the offseason to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-detroit-gm-reveals-gleyber-torres-plan-after-15-million-contract">one-year, $15 million deal</a> after the 28-year-old endured a turbulent season with the Yankees.</p><p>The Dodgers ultimately swept the Tigers, who are still searching for their first win of the year. Detroit will start a series against the Mariners in Seattle on Monday.</p><h2><b>The Tigers’ relationship with Gleyber Torres seems to be off to a good start despite injury</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Gleyber-Torres.jpg"><figcaption>Mike Watters-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It’s no secret that there was some <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-gleyber-torres-yankees-2025">friction between Torres and the Yankees</a> by the end of his time in the Bronx. When New York acquired Jazz Chisholm Jr. at the 2024 trade deadline, Torres refused to move to third base to accommodate him, according to general manager Brian Cashman.</p><p>Things <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/03/10/sports/gleyber-torres-revels-in-yankees-fans-warm-welcome-as-hurt-lingers/#!" rel="noopener">seem to be better</a> for Torres in Detroit.</p><p>“I feel I deserve to be with an organization that wants me,” he said during spring training, according to the New York Post. “I’m here now and that’s the reason I’m here.”</p><p>He seems to have <a href="https://www.nj.com/yankees/2025/03/when-ex-yankees-player-joined-new-team-star-admits-thinking-i-have-no-idea-who-you-are.html" rel="noopener">endeared himself to his teammates</a> as well. Outfielder Riley Greene joked about not recognizing Torres when he showed up to camp because he had grown a beard.</p><p>“Gleyber’s awesome,” Greene added, per Jimmy Hascup of NJ.com. “Great, great dude. Flaherty ended up playing an important role in LA’s World Series run. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/tigers-news-jack-flaherty-returning-detroit-2-year-35-million">Flaherty re-signed with the Tigers</a> this past offseason, and Detroit is currently in LA to play the Dodgers. With Flaherty back in town for the weekend, Dave Roberts <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6240109/2025/03/29/tigers-jack-flaherty-dodgers-ring-day-return/" rel="noopener">shared his honest thoughts</a> on the right-handed hurler’s role for the ’24 World Series-winning team.</p><p>“Somewhat of a savior, to be honest with you,” Roberts said, via Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic. “Jack, hometown guy, it was his dream to pitch for the Dodgers, and he delivered. So he’s going to be a friend of mine for life… He was the right person at the right time for our club. And I’m happy that he got family and friends to see him in a Dodger uniform.”</p><h2><b>Jack Flaherty’s impact on 2024 Dodgers</b></h2><p>Overall, Flaherty pitched to a 3.17 ERA between his time in Los Angeles and Detroit a season ago. His 2.95 ERA with the Tigers led to plenty of interest from teams around the league at the MLB trade deadline. The Dodgers ultimately landed him in a deal, though.</p><p>Flaherty went on to record a 3.58 ERA in LA. He struggled in the postseason — pitching to a 7.36 ERA — but Flaherty still had some big moments. In the end, the Dodgers are likely content with their decision to acquire him via trade.</p><p>He ended up re-signing with Detroit this past offseason, and now he is hoping to lead the Tigers back to the postseason. Despite trading him away last year, the Tigers still earned a playoff spot. One has to imagine that Detroit has especially high expectations with Flaherty back on the roster.</p><p>The Dodgers will host the Tigers once again at 9:10 PM EST on Saturday night. In 2024, he hit 15 home runs, drove in 63 runs, and slashed .257/.330/.378.</p><p>The Tigers don’t need Torres to play at a superstar level. However, they could use key contributions like Friday night’s home run against the Dodgers. Ben Verlander of Fox Sports <a href="https://x.com/BenVerlander/status/1905650952172175593" rel="noopener">is a believer</a> in the Detroit Tigers 25-year-old. However, is Verlander’s following post an over-exaggeration or is he correct in his assessment?</p><p>“What’s one takeaway for you from Opening Day? I’ll start: 1st overall pick Spencer Torkelson has arrived,” Verlander wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>First, let’s take a look at what prompted the message.</p><p>Although the Tigers were defeated 5-4 by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, Torkelson went 1-1 with a home run and four walks. Yes, that OBP will play just fine.</p><p>It was a quality performance for Torkelson without question. This is a player who has failed to live up to expectations so far in his career, though. In fact, there were no guarantees that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-aj-hinch-proud-spencer-torkelson-after-making-opening-day-roster">Torkelson was going to make the Tigers’ 2025 Opening Day roster</a>.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-spencer-torkelson-drops-admission-possible-role-change-tigers">Torkelson offers versatilit</a>y for Detroit. The Tigers are hopeful that he can emerge as a star at some point down the road. They are set to give him another opportunity this season, but Torkelson has been given opportunities before at the MLB level.</p><h2><b>Spencer Torkelson’s MLB career</b></h2><p>Torkelson made his big league debut in 2022. He hit just .203 with a .604 OPS across 110 games, but the Tigers remained confident in the former No. 1 overall pick. After all, it was just one season.</p><p>In 2023, though, Torkelson continued to struggle at the plate. He ended up hitting .233 with a .758 OPS in 159 games played. Torkelson did manage to crush 31 home runs in his first full season at the MLB level, but he still wasn’t producing No. 1 overall pick numbers.</p><p>Things got even worse in 2024.</p><p>Torkelson struggled mightily to begin the ’24 campaign before the Tigers made the surprising decision to demote him to the minor leagues. He was later promoted to the big league team once again, but Torkelson finished the season with a lackluster .219/.295/.374/.669 slash line across 92 games played.</p><h2><b>Will Torkelson find his groove with the Tigers in 2025?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Spencer-Torkelson-reacts-after-hitting-a-home-run-against-Dodgers.jpg"><figcaption>Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Looking back at the original question, is Ben Verlander correct in his Opening Day takeaway?</p><p>Although Torkelson has yet to truly find his rhythm with the Tigers, it is important to remember that he is only 25 years old. Some prospects simply take longer to settle in. Sure, there have been players such as Juan Soto and Bryce Harper who have posted elite numbers in their early 20’s. Other players, however, don’t get things going until their mid-late 20’s.</p><p>It seems as if the Tigers are prepared to give Spencer Torkelson an opportunity to play everyday. He was the designated hitter on Thursday. Torkelson is a first baseman as well, and there is even a chance that he could spend some time in the outfield this year. Regardless of which position Torkelson ends up playing, he is going to receive plenty of at-bats.</p><p>If Torkelson can cut down on his strikeouts — his 27.6 percent strikeout rate in 2024 was a career-high — then he will take a step in the right direction. Torkelson has displayed the ability to hit for power in the past — he recorded career-highs in home run percentage (4.5 percent) and hard-hit percentage (50.9 percent) during his 31-home run 2023 campaign.</p><p>If the Tigers infielder can limit his strikeouts while hitting the ball hard once again, he will enjoy a big season. The Tigers selected him first overall in the 2020 MLB Draft for a reason. Torkelson, 25, is slated to start as the designated hitter when the Tigers open their season Thursday against the Dodgers, facing off against lefty Blake Snell.</p><p>“I’m very proud of Tork,” Hinch said Wednesday. “There have been times where it felt like he carried the weight of the world on his shoulders. The work now starts again in the season for him to be a middle-of-the-order bat that we want to rely on.”</p><p>Torkelson certainly earned this shot. Across 19 spring training games, he slashed .340/.389/.680 with five home runs and 11 RBIs in 55 plate appearances, good for a 1.069 OPS. After a disappointing 2024 campaign in which he hit just .219 with 10 homers over 92 games before being optioned to Triple-A Toledo, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/tigers-spencer-torkelson-breaks-silence-on-losing-starting-spot">Torkelson’s role with the club was uncertain</a>, especially after the Tigers acquired Gleyber Torres and shifted top prospect Colt Keith to first base. President of baseball operations Scott Harris made the stakes clear back in December.</p><p>“I called him and told him, ‘If you make adjustments and have a big spring, there’s going to be a role for you on this team,’” Harris said. “I meant it, and he proved it. We’re really proud of him.”</p><p>Torkelson did play some innings in right field during camp — six in total — and while his primary duties will be at DH, Hinch suggested the team is open to giving him defensive reps when needed.</p><p>“He’s going to get at-bats at designated hitter, first base,” Hinch said. “And if an in-game situation arises where he ends up in right field, it won’t be the first time. He’s practiced it.”</p><p>Torkelson owns a .221 batting average and .693 OPS over his three-year MLB career, with his 2023 season being a bright spot (31 home runs in 159 games). The key now is consistency — something Detroit desperately needs from a right-handed power bat in the middle of its order. When Quinn isn't producing content for CP,  he's writing sports betting predictions for numerous sites across North America.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Detroit Tigers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/astros-make-multiple-roster-moves-before-opening-day">The Houston Astros just recently parted ways with outfielder Ben Gamel</a>, but it didn’t take long for him to find a home with the Detroit Tigers.</p><p>The AL Central ball club is <a href="https://x.com/Feinsand/status/1904945805770760376" rel="noopener">signing the veteran</a> to a minor league deal.</p><p>Via Mark Feinsand:</p><p>“The Tigers have signed Ben Gamel to a Minor League deal, per source. He gets $1.2 million plus incentives.”</p><p>While Gamel will start the season in Triple-A Toledo, he is a potential depth piece in the outfield for Detroit. Gamel has played in the big leagues in each of the last nine seasons, suiting up for the likes of Houston, the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, Milwaukee Brewers, and New York Mets, among others.</p><p>The 32-year-old is a lifetime .252 hitter but was limited to just 38 games in 2024 with the Astros and Mets, slashing .247/.384/.333. Gamel has mostly played left field in his MLB career, and the Tigers do need some depth out there, considering the recent injuries.<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/tigers-projected-starter-out-with-nerve-issue-has-silver-lining"> Parker Meadows is likely out until June</a> at the very least due to injury. Matt Vierling, who plays third base and in the outfield, has a rotator cuff issue and won’t be ready for Opening Day.</p><p>The Tigers were hoping Wenceel Perez could make up for the loss of Meadows and Vierling, but he’s now on the shelf as well, sustaining a back injury in spring training. You can now see why the signing of Gamel was an important one for Detroit.</p><p>Given how injury-riddled their outfield group is at the moment, there’s certainly a good chance Gamel gets called up to the Majors sooner rather than later. He doesn’t lack experience, and while the Tigers are a talented team, they do not have a ton of seasoned veterans. Gamel has been around the block for a hot minute and could also bring leadership to this organization.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But shortly after the signing was announced, discouraging injury news was also revealed.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-projected-starter-out-with-nerve-issue-has-silver-lining">The Tigers, who are already dealing with injuries</a> to the likes of Parker Meadows, Matt Vierling, and Akil Baddoo, have now lost Wenceel Perez thanks to lower-back inflammation. He’s <a href="https://x.com/CodyStavenhagen/status/1904292934650061040" rel="noopener">been ruled out</a> for at least a month.</p><p>The news was confirmed by Tigers President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris, who also indicated that Perez is <a href="https://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2025/03/24/wenceel-perez-injury-update-detroit-tigers-outfielder-out/82643562007/" rel="noopener">scheduled to receive a back injection</a> later this week via The Detroit Free Press.</p><p>“He is scheduled to get an injection later this week and will be out at least a month,” Harris said, via Detroit Free Press writer Evan Petzold. “We will share more information about the exact injury and prognosis as we learn more this week.”</p><p>Meanwhile, Margot played multiple seasons with the San Diego Padres and Tampa Bay Rays before playing last season with the Minnesota Twins. He was recently released by the Milwaukee Brewers and is expected to be on Detroit’s roster for their regular season opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 27.</p><h2>Detroit Tigers OF Wenceel Perez had a strong rookie season</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Tigers-Wenceel-Perez-in-action-against-Cleveland-on-October-10.jpg"><figcaption>Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Perez, who was never drafted, joined the Tigers as an international free-agent in 2016. After the injury to Meadows, Perez was expected to be Detroit’s regular center fielder for the foreseeable future. Detroit signed Margot to give them some added depth in the outfield.</p><p>Perez earned his first MLB call-up last April and was never returned to Triple-A Toledo. In his rookie MLB campaign for the Tigers, he posted a stat line of .242/.300/.383 with a 93 OPS+.</p><p>Earlier this month, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch described Perez’s <a href="https://www.mlb.com/rays/news/wenceel-perez-an-option-in-center-field-for-tigers-opening-day-roster" rel="noopener">first foray in the majors</a> as “impressive”, via MLB.com.</p><p>“What I’ve learned about Wenceel is he can handle it all,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Thursday. “The bat quality is really good. His feel for the outfield is better than I think any of us expected. He’s continuing to get better and can get a lot better. There may be a day when he goes back into the infield and plays both on the dirt and the grass. But last year doesn’t happen without his contribution, and a lot of that was a new position at the highest level that he’d never played at.
