The fantastic right-handed pitcher, who just <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celebrity/pirates-news-livvy-dunne-welcomes-fans-to-paul-star-game-as-paul-skenes-dominates">started his second straight MLB All-Star Game</a>, appears destined to become one of the highest-paid hurlers of all-time at some point in the future. Extending or re-signing him feels borderline incomprehensible given past spending tendencies and a decade-long playoffs drought.</p><p>But if management intends to keep Skenes for at least the next several years — becomes a free agent after 2029 campaign — then it must surround him with as much promising talent as possible. Offense is a specific need. The National League team gave the Pirates ace <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/pittsburgh-pirates/pirates-news-fans-clown-pittsburgh-for-lack-of-paul-skenes-run-support">more run support</a> than he had gotten in his last three outings combined. It is irresponsible to ignore the gaping holes in this lineup.</p><p>Pittsburgh general manager Ben Cherington must do everything feasible to address the shortage of viable bats ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. The most logical course of action is to shop established veterans who can potentially make a difference in October. Someone who has spent many years in the industry <a href="https://x.com/FoulTerritoryTV/status/1945940318521892929" rel="noopener">has a player in mind</a> who could possibly net the Pirates a solid return.</p><p>“If you can turn Bryan Reynolds into two young bats, that makes sense,” former Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds GM Jim Bowden told the Foul Territory podcast.</p><h2><b>Can the Pirates realistically get a good haul for Reynolds?</b></h2><p>The two-time All-Star outfielder has a chance to hit at least 24 home runs in four consecutive seasons. He boasts a formidable .271/.345/.459/.804 slash line for his career and has almost 900 MLB games under his belt. Those credentials ought to generate some interest around the league, right? Unfortunately for Cherington, it is not that simple. There are two rather large roadblocks the Pirates must clear in order to trade Reynolds: his poor 2025 production and a sizable contract.</p><p>The 2016 second-round draft pick has a paltry .225 batting average, 10 home runs, .287 on-base percentage, .369 slugging percentage and .656 OPS through 91 games. Those shockingly low numbers will make it hard for teams to justify sending two potentially impactful offensive contributors to Pittsburgh, especially since he signed an eight-year, $106.75 million extension in 2023. The best the Buccos can probably hope for in a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-rumors-royals-interested-in-trade-for-pirates-2-time-all-star">hypothetical Reynolds deal</a> is financial relief and maybe an every-day player.</p><p>That being said, Ben Cherington should certainly heed Bowden’s comments, if he isn’t already trying to gauge the 30-year-old’s trade value.</p><h2><b>A productive trade deadline is essential</b></h2><p>Pittsburgh must use other clubs’ desperation against them going into the deadline. The problem is, though, that the Pirates are fairly desperate themselves. Retaining Paul Skenes without a clear plan to fortify the roster around him is arguably malpractice.</p><p>Even if they intend to move the Cy Young contender in the next couple of years, restocking the farm system is essential. Pittsburgh is lacking ammunition in the batting order, ranking last in slugging, home runs and doubles this season. Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz, the two men entrusted to lead this lineup, are woefully underachieving at the plate. Given the scarcity of talent on offense, it is crucial that the top guys consistently come through.</p><p>The Pirates are squandering a highly capable pitching staff that currently owns the 10th-best ERA in MLB. Their identity is tied to the mound, but they will remain trapped in the NL Central basement without more hitting. Whether it comes via a Reynolds trade, or by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/pittsburgh-pirates/predicting-pirates-next-big-trade-before-deadline">moving someone else</a>, this flailing franchise needs to seek balance before month’s end.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Bryan Reynolds heard the noise and made sure he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cubs-news-david-ross-disrespects-pirates-cubs-lose-series-playoff-push" rel="noopener">defended the Pirates</a> and fired back at Ross.</p><p>Ross called the Pirates, “not a good team,” after losing the series. Reynolds <a href="https://twitter.com/JMackeyPG/status/1705323884336005456" rel="noopener">simply asked</a> the Cubs’ boss why Chicago didn’t win the series then, via Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.</p><p>“We can use it as motivation. If we’re such a bad team, maybe he should have managed his team a little better and beat us,” Reynolds said.</p><p>After a blistering start to the season, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cubs-news-alexander-canario-journey-mlb-grand-slam-pirates" rel="noopener">Pirates have cooled off</a> considerably and remain out of the playoff hunt at 72-81. The Cubs are currently in possession of the final Wild Card spot in the National. However, their lead is only a miniscule 0.5 games. Losing series to the Pirates is not how Chicago punches their playoff ticket.</p><p>But for Bryan Reynolds and the Pirates, they don’t mind seeing the Cubs falter. While Pittsburgh once again missed out on the postseason, they showed promise in a number of areas. Throughout the diamond the Pirates have intriguing prospects that has their arrow pointing up in the future.</p><p>For now the Cubs reign supreme, at least in a battle amongst both teams. But Pittsburgh still proved that they’re a team that shouldn’t be underestimated. Luckily for the Pirates, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pirates-news-nick-gonzales-call-up/" rel="noopener">Reynolds isn’t planning to be</a> away from the team much longer.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pirates-news-pittsburgh-devastating-bryan-reynolds-injury-update-losing-streak/" rel="noopener">Reynolds was able to</a> hit on Tuesday and is planning on throwing on Wednesday, via Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. All in all, Reynolds is <a href="https://twitter.com/JMackeyPG/status/1674106390661431316" rel="noopener">hoping to be activated</a> off of the injured list when first eligible on Friday.</p><p>“That’s the hope,” Reynolds said of his potential Friday return.</p><p>The star outfielder has been on the shelf with lower back inflammation. His injury was bad timing for Pittsburgh, as the Pirates have slipped to 36-42 and are now five games back in the NL Central. The team has gone just 2-8 over their last 10 games.</p><p>However, Reynolds’ return would provide an immediate spark to the Pirates lineup. In 68 games this season, Reynolds is hitting .279 with eight home runs, 40 RBI and eight stolen bases. He leads the team in batting average and RBI and ranks third in stolen bases.</p><p>The Pirates know how crucial Reynolds is to their success when they signed him to the largest contract in franchise history. Over his five years in Pittsburgh, Reynolds has hit .281 with 82 home runs, 40 RBI and 24 stolen bases. He was an All-Star in 2021.</p><p>Pittsburgh’s hype might’ve died down a bit from their fast start. However, Bryan Reynolds is just the guy to reignite the light. The Pirates will hope his optimistic injury return date comes to fruition and Reynolds is back on the diamond sooner than later.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The middle infielder has a .277 average in 211 minor league games. This season with Triple-A Indianapolis, Gonzales has a .820 OPS with 14 doubles, five triples and six home runs.</p><p>Gonzales mostly played second base in the minors but spent some time at shortstop. He is still working on his fielding as a hitter-first player. He missed a chunk of time in 2021 and 2022 due to injury.</p><p>Gonzales should get a chance at some playing time as the Pirates don’t exactly have stars in the middle of their infield. Ji Hwan Bae and Tucapita Marcano have played the majority of games at second base and shortstop but both of them have an OPS below .700.</p><p>The Pirates showed signs that their rebuild may be coming to an end earlier this season. After starting the season at 20-9, Pittsburgh has come back down to Earth since the start of May. They are 14-31 in their last 45 games, falling from first place to fourth. They are 34-40 and are 5.5 games out of first place in the NL Central.</p><p>Despite their massive skid of as late, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pirates-all-star-game-2023" rel="noopener">Pirates have plenty of young players</a> that could turn out to be franchise cornerstones including Nick Gonzales.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
