From starting the 2025 MLB season in Triple-A to an MLB promotion in May, Cade has dominated from the mound. He’s a big reason as to why the Cubs are currently leading the NL Wild Card race by 7.5 games.</p><p>Horton knows <a href="https://twitter.com/MLBNetworkRadio/status/1966549780676399438" rel="noopener">he’s come a long way</a> and remains focused on doing his best in the majors, he said, per MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM.</p><p>“Just being able to experience all this in my first year, it’s a really special opportunity — to be in the chase,” Horton said. “So, yeah, just stacking good days, and keep playing ball games.”</p><p>Coming up through the minor leagues, it’s been undoubtedly been an unforgettable season for Horton.</p><p>“It’s super cool being able to come up through the minors with them, and then, now, impacting a major league club has been really fun, and special,” Horton added. “Those guys are great competitors. I love playing with them, and having them behind me. They make a lot of plays for me. So, just being able to go to work with them every day has been really fun. And, just seeing all their hardwork come to fruition has been really cool.”</p><p>While improving to 10-4 on the season, Horton led the Cubs to a 6-1 win against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. Through 21 starts, Cade has a 2.70 ERA, 1.11 WHIP with 89 strikeouts in 110 innings pitched in 2025. The Cubs rebounded from a series ending loss to the Atlanta Braves with an 11-5 win over the Nationals on Friday. Although they are down 2-1 in the seventh inning, there’s still time to clinch a win. Despite starting during that loss to Atlanta, rookie Cade Horton has still emerged as FanDuel’s <a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/mlb?tab=awards" rel="noopener">betting favorite for</a> the National League Rookie of the Year.</p><p>Horton’s five-inning outing against the Braves was actually a strong one. The former top prospect <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id/4692526/cade-horton" rel="noopener">threw five shutout innings,</a> holding the Braves hitless and striking out six. He was one walk away from a perfect outing. However, fellow young gun Ben Brown cost Horton his tenth win of the season. So far, the former first-round pick is 9-4 with a 2.78 ERA in 103.2 innings. He could eclipse the 125-inning mark on the season.</p><p>Further down the FanDuel list is another Cub, this time third baseman Matt Shaw at +6000. The 23-year-old rebounded from a rough start and subsequent demotion to make it back to Wrigley Field. Now, it appears <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-matt-shaw-silver-lining">that Shaw has locked in</a> the hot corner. Although his .229 batting average doesn’t scream impactful, the rookie’s performance at the plate has stabilized since his early season ups and downs. Whether Horton, Shaw or another contender clinches the Rookie of the Year honor, the Cubs duo has a likely postseason berth ahead of them. Chances are the work that Hoyer and the front office have done in the draft helped the Cubbies’ head of baseball ops earn his recent extension.</p><p>Will Horton or Shaw capture this year’s NL Rookie of the Year title? Based on just how well Horton has done since he debuted, it would be a surprise if FanDuel’s odds aren’t correct. He is also a professor of sociology.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Chicago Cubs</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Chicago Cubs <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-kyle-tucker-out-series-finale-braves-nagging-calf-injury">were without Kyle Tucker</a> and lost to the Atlanta Braves 5-1 on Wednesday.</p><p>At the start of the game, the Cubs were leading 1-0. Furthermore, starting pitcher Cade Horton had a no-hitter going.</p><p>That is, until he was pulled in the 5th inning by manager Craig Counsell. Reliever Ben Brown kept the no-hitter going in the sixth.</p><p>In the 7th, Ozzie Albies hit a single that broke the no-hitter. As a result, the Braves scored four runs and put up another in the 8th.</p><p>Afteward, Horton said <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46153281/cubs-stick-cade-horton-pitch-limit-5-no-hit-innings" rel="noopener">he understood</a> why Counsell pulled him out to protect him for the remainder of the season and potentially into the postseason, per ESPN.</p><p>“Honestly, it really has helped me a lot,” Horton said. “I think just knowing I’m kind of like at that 75-pitch limit, it almost makes me scale down the moment. It’s like, all right, let’s just go out there today and get 15 outs and do it as efficiently as possible.”</p><p>Later, Counsell credited Horton for his ability to get hitters out with a fastball and a hard-breaking ball.</p><p>“It’s an attack mentality,” Counsell said. “It’s fun to watch, and it’s been a really, really impressive start to a major league career.”</p><p>Furthermore, he explained his strategy behind limiting Horton to 75 pitches in the game.</p><p>“It’s what we’re doing,” Counsell said. “Cade could have four or five regular-season starts left, and hopefully he’s got another four or five more starts after that. That innings number could get pretty high, so we’re going to make sure he is properly taken care of.”</p><p>As a result, Horton didn’t take any umbrage at Counsell pulling him out in the midst of a no-hitter.</p><p>“Jokingly,” Horton said. “I know at the end of the day it’s not going to happen.</p><p>“And that’s all right. I’d much rather be healthy for the postseason than go out there for the sixth or seventh in early September.”</p><p>In the end, Horton pitched five innings, had six strikeouts, and one walk.</p><h2><b>Cade Horton’s solid debut season with the Cubs</b></h2><p>In his first year with Chicago, Horton has put up really strong numbers. He is 9-4 with a 2.78 ERA with 87 strikeouts.</p><p>Since the All-Star break, Horton’s performance has been practically dominant. In his last nine starts, he has pitched 47 innings and gave up only nine hits and four runs with an ERA of 0.77.</p><p>In mid August, Horton had a 29 scoreless inning streak going before <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/cubs-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-ends-cade-hortons-scoreless-inning-streak">Vladimir Guerrero Jr. broke it with an RBI double</a> in the Cubs/Blue Jays game on Aug. 13.</p><p>Altogether, Horton is a strong contender for the NL Rookie of the Year honor.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He graduated from NYU in 2012 and still returns to serve as PA announcer and occasional broadcaster for the school’s basketball and volleyball teams.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Chicago Cubs</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Cade Horton left his start against the Milwaukee Brewers early on Monday with an apparent injury.</p><p>The Cubs have not released additional info as of this writing, but Bleacher Nation reports Horton is <a href="https://x.com/BleacherNation/status/1957521118652149926" rel="noopener">dealing with a blister</a>.</p><p>Regardless of the reason for his quick exit, it seems to be just about the worst-case scenario for Chicago as it begins a day-night doubleheader in Chicago. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-rookie-makes-franchise-history-scoreless-streak">rookie has been lights-out since the All-Star break</a>, throwing 28.1 innings over that time, before he took the mound Monday. He has given up just one run over those five starts on 11 hits and nine walks.</p><p>He lasted 2.2 innings on Monday, allowing a run on a Brice Turang homer, with four hits, a walk, and three strikeouts. Cubs manager Craig Counsell visited Horton on the mound twice in the early innings before ultimately pulling him. Horton had thrown seven consecutive pitches outside the strike zone before his exit.</p><p>Compare that to his stellar outing last week against the Toronto Blue Jays, when he <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/cade-horton-cubs-win-vs-blue-jays?game_pk=776757" rel="noopener">struck out eight</a> and allowed only one hit over 5.2 innings.</p><p>“This is the hardest team to strike out in baseball, and what he did to a very good lineup is just a continuation of what we’ve seen this past month,” Counsell said after the game, per Matt Betts of MLB.com. “He was awesome. We’ve had some superlatives with him each start, and this was maybe the best one.”</p><p>Horton is squarely in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/brewers-news-isaac-collins-emerges-as-nl-rookie-of-the-year-betting-favorite">NL Rookie of the Year mix</a>, listed as the fourth-most-likely winner, per FanDuel Sportsbook. In 16 games (15 starts), he is 7-3 with a 3.07 ERA and 1.176 WHIP.</p><p>Though the Cubs trail the Brewers by 8.5 games in the NL Central, the team is in the driver’s seat for the first Wild Card spot. At 70-53, they lead the San Diego Padres by a game and a half atop the Wild Card standings and have a 4.5-game cushion of playoff safety.</p><p>The Brewers now lead the Cubs 2-0 as of this writing.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. brought his streak to an end with an RBI double. The All-Star first baseman scored Andres Gimenez to leave a blemish on Horton’s start.</p><p>Guerrero Jr. jumped on a fastball from Andrew Kittredge and <a href="https://twitter.com/TalkinBaseball_/status/1955792917945331832" rel="noopener">hit it down the left field line</a> in the sixth inning. Kittredge got through the rest of the inning without allowing any more runs. However, Guerrero brought Horton’s streak to an end. Despite it being over, Horton’s streak stands alone as the longest scoreless run in Cubs’ history. There is no telling when someone will come even close to his mark.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-dansby-swanson-cade-hortons-mlb-debut">Horton has impressed since his Major League Baseball debut</a>. On a Cubs team desperate for pitching outside of Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd, the rookie has been a welcome surprise. Chicago hopes that he can become a part of their playoff rotation as the postseason looms over the league.</p><p>After losing their last two games, the Cubs needed a good start from Horton. Luckily for manager Craig Counsell, the rookie gave his team 5.2 innings of one-run baseball, striking out eight batters on the way. In a series against one of the American League’s best teams in Toronto, Chicago needed to hold their own.</p><p>On the other side of the matchup, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-vladimir-guerrero-jr-500-million-contract-extension-325-million-shocker">Guerrero Jr. continues to show why paying him</a> was such a good idea. He has the Blue Jays in firm control of the AL East and could secure the top seed in the league.
