Their record ballooned to 11-7 after the victory thanks to a solid offensive performance and great pitching. Patrick Corbin made his second start for the Rangers and was great, but almost didn’t make the start because of a potential spider bite. MLB.com reporter Kennedi Landry spoke to Corbin and Bruce Bochy about <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/patrick-corbin-pitched-with-spider-bite" rel="noopener">his Peter Parker run-in</a>.</p><p>“We weren’t even sure if he was going to pitch,”  Bochy said Thursday. “He had a bite. He could hardly walk when he came into the clubhouse. Some kind of venom got in there. Not sure if it was a spider or what. He was 50/50 on whether he would make the start or not.”</p><p>“Something bit me, but I still don’t know what,” Corbin said. “They were able to kind of work it out and just kind of maintain it throughout the day. But it’s pretty sore still. It’s just kind of just something that’s really strange. I was just fortunate to get through yesterday, and I have some time to recover and be good to go.”</p><p>The bite on Corbin’s foot did not give the Rangers veteran the ability to sling webs. As far as we know.</p><h2><b>A Patrick Corbin ascent could help the Rangers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Corbin-with-Texas-Rangers.jpg"><figcaption>Raymond Carlin III-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/rangers-news-chris-young-patrick-corbin-signing">Rangers signed Patrick Corbin</a> after Jon Gray got hurt in spring training. After he failed to live up to his massive contract with the Washington Nationals, Corbin went all offseason without a contract. But he has joined Texas late in the process and put up his best performance in years on Wednesday. With Kumar Rocker struggling and Gray still hurt, Corbin could help their AL West chances.</p><p>According to Landry, Wednesday’s start was the first time Corbin faced 16 or fewer batters through five innings since 2018. He went 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and one earned run, earning the win. Whether the spider helped him with that performance, we may never know. But Tom Holland should keep his head on a swivel just in case.</p><p>Corbin may not be a regular starter for the Rangers this year, but when he does start, they need to know he can be trusted. That was not the case when he started for the Nationals in the last few years. Texas has high expectations this season, and a supercharged Corbin will help them meet those marks.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The team is intent on turning around its offense after last season’s massively disappointing followup to the Rangers’ World Series victory in 2023.</p><p>Unfortunately, Pederson has gotten off to a <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/sports/rangers/2025/04/11/mired-in-career-worst-start-texas-rangers-joc-pederson-looks-for-freedom-at-the-plate/" rel="noopener">miserable start</a> with his new team. Through 11 games entering Friday night’s matchup against the Seattle Mariners, Pederson is slashing an ugly .094/.216/.125. The Rangers are still waiting on his first home run and first RBI of the season.</p><p>“I’ve not had a lot of quality at-bats… I wish I could say I felt good and I’m not getting results, but I feel pretty crappy there,” Pederson admitted, via Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.</p><p>“When that comes at the start of the season, I think it gets overemphasized. And exaggerated. And as players, I think we also feel the stress and pressures of that, so it doesn’t make it any more easier and fun and you try to do more. So you’ve just got to get back to winning one pitch at a time and let the results come when they come,” Pederson explained.</p><h2><b>The Rangers need new DH Joc Pederson to return to form</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Joc-Pederson-2.jpg"><figcaption>Katie Stratman-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Rangers got a league-worst .584 OPS from the designated hitter spot in 2024. It was part of what went wrong for the team last season. Unfortunately, the player they’re counting on to turn that around has actually been even worse. Pederson has produced a .341 OPS through 11 games this season.</p><p>“I’m trying to work with the coaches to get some freedom back in the box. I just feel a little restricted, like I can’t get my good swing off and there is something blocking me. So I’m working on freeing that up,” Pederson said, per The Dallas Morning News.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-texas-agrees-contract-joc-pederson-nathaniel-lowe-trade">Rangers signed Pederson</a> to a two-year, $37 million contract this offseason. The two-time All-Star debuted with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2014 and spent the first seven years of his career with the team. After leaving the Dodgers for the Chicago Cubs in 2021, Pederson has bounced around the league on short term deals.</p><p>He spent last season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Pederson slashed .275/.393/.515 with Arizona, racking up 2.9 bWAR and a 150 OPS+ as the team’s DH. The Rangers are the sixth organization he’s suited up for in his 12-year career.</p><p>Texas hopes Pederson can turn things around quickly as the club attempts to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/fatal-flaw-texas-rangers-must-address-for-2025-mlb-season">bounce back from last year’s letdown</a>. Dansby Swanson came up with the big hit in the game as his two-RBI triple in the eighth inning when things were all tied up put the Cubs up for good. Swanson had a huge game as he also hit a home run and ended up having four RBIs.</p><p>Dansby Swanson had surgery in October because of a hernia, but he is clearly feeling a lot better now. Not only is <a href="https://www.marqueesportsnetwork.com/dansby-swanson-craig-counsell-kyle-tucker-chicago-cubs-offense-mlb/" rel="noopener">being healthy</a> freeing him up physically, but it has also gotten rid of a mental barrier.</p><p>“Just starting out, like I said, being healthy is such a big deal,” Swanson said on Tuesday after the win, according to an article from <i>Marquee Sports Network</i>. “Kind of has been a really good reminder of this is what it’s supposed to feel like to be healthy and to be able to play freely mentally, but also physically. And I’m just so grateful to be in this position and to be here with these guys, being able to do this.”</p><p>Swanson is noticing a big difference this year, and so are his teammates and coaches. He is finally getting back to his true form.</p><p>“I think he’s just being himself,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said. “He’s obviously off to a good start and driving some baseballs. He’s putting some balls in the air and driving the ball. He’s definitely off to a big start.”</p><p>The start of the 2025 season has been kind to Swanson, and it has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-offensive-explosion-makes-unwanted-athletics-history">been kind to the rest of this Cubs team as well</a>. Chicago is the favorite to win the NL Central, and so far, they look like the best team in the division.</p><p>“I think just the consistency and the intent has been so tremendous from our group,” Swanson added. “Just not taking at-bats off, no matter what the score is, no matter what the situation is, just looking to do a job, being intentional, running the bases. All those things are huge. I think that that has just shown what it takes for this group to be good, and we’ve done that so far, throughout this year and it’s been a joy to be a part of.”</p><p>Dansby Swanson and the Cubs have already taken the first two games against the Rangers in the three-game series, and they will be going for the sweep on Wednesday. He’s struck out 65 hitters in 46 innings of work for the Rangers since joining in the ’23 offseason. In 2025, deGrom has made one start, throwing five frames of scoreless baseball while striking out six.</p><p>There’s no question that he will be the ace of this staff if he stays off the IL. He was only limited to five innings last Sunday, but that was deGrom’s return from injury. The Rangers plan to let him go six or seven innings in his next start, which is going to be on Saturday evening against the Tampa Bay Rays.</p><p>deGrom admitted there <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/jacob-degrom-five-scoreless-innings-2025-debut" rel="noopener">was some nerves</a> in his return from Tommy John, but he quickly settled in against the Boston Red Sox.</p><p>Via MLB.com:</p><p>“I get jitters every time I take the mound,” deGrom said. “I have a hard time eating that day, I get super nervous. Unfortunately, the 24-year-old pitcher will miss some time after the club placed him on the injured list on Friday.</p><p>The Rangers star is reportedly <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1908307742055686299" rel="noopener">dealing with a blister</a> and is being placed on the 15-Day IL, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Patrick Corbin will be filling in Leiter’s role in the starting rotation.</p><p>“Jack Leiter, sensational in his start, goes on the 15-day IL with a blister and Patrick Corbin takes his place on Texas Rangers.”</p><p>The injury isn’t ideal but the good news is that it’s still incredibly early in the season. It’s also not deemed a serious injury, as a blister is something Jack Leiter can bounce back from with relative ease. Despite that, the Rangers will be without one of their star pitchers who has looked phenomenal to begin the season.</p><p>Through his two starts, Leiter is recording an impressive 0.90 ERA and 0.700 WHIP. He’s also thrown 10 strikeouts in 10 innings pitched. These numbers are a noticeable jump in production in comparison to his 2024 debut with the club. If Jack Leiter can maintain these numbers then the Rangers could have something special on the mound throughout most of the 2025 season.</p><p>With Patrick Corbin filling in for Leiter for the time being, Texas will hope the veteran pitcher can bounce back from years past. In the past four years with the Washington Nationals, the 35-year-old left-handed hurler has recorded a 31-63 win-loss record. Albeit, the Nationals haven’t been the most competitive club in recent years. Jack Leiter picked up his second win of the season in the Rangers’ 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday afternoon, tossing five scoreless innings with one hit and six strikeouts.</p><p>Leiter enjoys pitching alongside Nathan Eovaldi, who <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/jack-leiter-blister-early-exit" rel="noopener">reminds him of a teammate he had</a> at Vanderbilt.</p><p>“It’s pretty cool to watch someone pick apart a lineup the night before, and especially a right-handed pitcher with a similar arsenal,” Leiter said of Eovaldi. “He’s better than [anyone]; he’s an expert. Watching him just attack last night was obviously pretty cool. Going into today, it felt pretty similar to college, pitching after Kumar [Rocker] when he would dominate the night before.”</p><p>While <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/rangers-news-nathan-eovaldi-epic-maddux-game-reds">Eovaldi has been productive on the mound</a> for the Rangers, Leiter is coming into his own and is earning the respect of his teammates, including catcher Jonah Heim.</p><p>“He just looks like he’s confident on the mound,” said Heim. “He looks like he trusts all his stuff. He’s throwing his heater where he wants to. He’s getting ahead of guys. That’s the biggest difference. He’s hitting corners, he’s making nasty pitches, and I think he just trusts all his stuff.”</p><p>Additionally, Rangers manager Bruce Bocky likes what he has seen out of Leiter so far.</p><p>“It’s pitchability,” said Bochy. “That’s what you’re seeing. He’s not trying to bull his way through lineups. He’s throwing strikes. He is not putting guys on base. He’s pounding the strike zone, not beating himself. It’s a very, very competitive game. When you start putting guys on, you start beating yourself a little bit. He’s not doing that.”</p><p>Leiter could be in a position to be an impactful part of the Rangers’ rotation for years to come.</p><h2><b>Rangers not focused on torpedo bats</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/unnamed-2.jpg"><figcaption>Raymond Carlin III-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>With the new torpedo bats becoming all the rage throughout the MLB, members of the Rangers are more <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/rangers-need-more-scoring-punch-in-rubber-game-vs-reds/" rel="noopener">focused on improving themselves at the plate</a>.</p><p>“I’m more focused on putting myself in the right spot to do what I need to do,” Corey Seager said. “There are probably times when it would help, but it’s hard to know exactly when those times are.”</p><p>“I want the Marcus Semien bat to start hitting first,” Marcus Semien said. “For me, it’s kind of a comfort thing. I’m comfortable with certain things. After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-texas-shoulders-blame-brutal-loss-reds">Cincy racked up 14 runs on Kumar Rocker and the bullpen on Monday</a>, they were shut out at home. The Rangers turned to Nathan Eovaldi for the second game of the series, and he dominated with a Maddux. I was able to get some quick outs, and I didn’t really have many deep counts. There were a few in there, but again, once we gave up that first hit, we were able to get a double play out of it. And not walking guys helps.”</p><p>Eovaldi allowed just four hits and no walks in the full nine innings on Tuesday. After a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cincinnati-reds/reds-news-elly-de-la-cruz-gets-100-real-torpedo-bat-amid-controversy">seven RBI game on Monday, Elly De La Cruz</a> was held without a hit and made the final out in the game. The Maddux is named after Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, who racked up 13 of them in his career. Eovaldi’s pitching coach is Mike Maddux, Greg’s older brother.</p><p>The Rangers have gotten solid pitching this year, and that should help them get back to the playoffs.</p><h2><b>Pitching is key for the Rangers this year</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Nathan-Eovaldi-with-TX-Rangers.jpg"><figcaption>Katie Stratman-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Of all of the issues the Rangers had last year, pitching injuries were the most significant. Eovaldi and Andrew Heaney were the only pitchers to throw over 103 innings last year. Despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-toronto-adds-max-scherzer-rotation-free-agency">losing Max Scherzer in free agency</a>, they have a loaded rotation that should win them games where their offense goes quiet.</p><p>While Jacob deGrom may never get back to his Cy Young levels, even a step down is one of the top pitchers in the league. His first start of the season was dominant, with five shutout innings and only two hits allowed. Despite the blowout loss with Rocker on the hill, the Rangers have a lot to hope for in their rotation.</p><p>On offense, the Rangers have just 18 runs through their first six games. They also picked up only four hits in Monday’s game, but a win is a win. Marcus Semien and Corey Seager have both gotten off to slow starts, and if they can turn it around, the Rangers can start to pile up early-season wins.</p><p>The Rangers and Reds finish their series with a 12:10 central time first pitch on Wednesday.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

And it looks like Eovaldi is only getting better with age. The 35-year-old starter was brilliant yet again, as he dominated the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night by pitching a complete-game shutout in a 1-0 win for the Rangers.</p><p>In so doing, Eovaldi is cementing himself as one of the best starting pitchers in the history of the franchise. In fact, Eovaldi <a href="https://x.com/MistrettaMLB/status/1907235737969332405" rel="noopener">became the first player</a> to throw a complete game shutout for the Rangers ever since he did in 2023 against the New York Yankees, as pointed out by ClutchPoints’ Joey Mistretta.</p><p>Eovaldi was in control for the entire night, and he was pinpoint with his delivery, allowing just four Reds hitters to reach base (none via walk) while striking out eight. This is an excellent follow-up performance to his Opening Day start for the Rangers where he allowed just two runs and struck out nine in an eventual 5-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox.</p><p>The consistency with which Eovaldi pitches is his best asset, and with the Rangers looking to bounce back from a nightmare 2024 season, they will need the 35-year-old righty to be at his best the way he has been in his first two starts of the new campaign. Eovaldi is proving himself to be well worth the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-reunion-nathan-eovaldi-in-free-agency">three-year, $75 million contract</a> he signed during the offseason, and the Rangers now move to 4-2 on the season courtesy of a dominant start from the team’s ace.</p><h2>Rangers might have a better-than-expected starting rotation</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Nathan-Eovaldi.jpg"><figcaption>Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Rangers built their World Series-winning identity on an explosive offense, and when their offense died down last year, it led to a nightmare of a World Series defense. Vibes were high in Arlington coming off <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-shares-nervous-admission-after-first-2025-start">Jacob deGrom’s first start of the year</a> and a great opening series. But that came crashing down on Monday when they lost 14-3 to the Cincinnati Reds. Rangers rookie starter Kumar Rocker <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/news/kumar-rocker-has-rough-outing-in-first-2025-start?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage" rel="noopener">shouldered the blame for the loss</a> against the Reds, per MLB.com’s Kennedi Landry.</p><p>“I’ve just gotta be better,” Rocker told Landry. “I didn’t put the team in a position to win tonight. That’s all on me. I’m just gonna work these next five days and try to win another ballgame here soon.”</p><p>Rocker lasted only three innings on Monday, allowing six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Reds centerfielder TJ Friedl opened the game with a single, and Matt McLain knocked him in with a homer immediately. Gavin Lux brought home Elly De La Cruz all before the Rangers starter recorded an out. De La Cruz took him deep in the second to bring the lead to 6-0.</p><p>While Rocker did retire the Reds 1-2-3 in the third inning, the Rangers were well behind when he left the game. This one loss won’t cost the Rangers a playoff spot, but after last year, they know how important starting pitching is. Texas had brutal injury luck last year, especially with their starters, and Rocker is important to making sure that does not happen this year.</p><p>On the other hand, Rocker’s college teammate <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-jack-leiter-truth-bomb-first-start">Jack Leiter was fantastic in his first start of the season</a>. He allowed just one run in five innings in a win against the Red Sox. With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-reveals-how-throwing-slower-is-key-to-return">deGrom’s plan for the Rangers being to throw slower</a> in the plan to come back stronger than ever, he had a strong start as he spoke on his emotions after the fact.</p><p>deGrom didn’t record the win, but threw five scoreless innings in 73 pitches while striking out six batters, walking two, and allowing two hits. He would admit that every time he gets out there to pitch, he gets <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/jacob-degrom-five-scoreless-innings-2025-debut" rel="noopener">“the jitters”</a> and “super nervous,” but he’s at the point where the 36-year-old has to trust his abilities according to MLB.com.</p><p>“I get jitters every time I take the mound,” deGrom said. “I have a hard time eating that day, I get super nervous. It is what it is. It’s just about wanting to go out there and compete at a high level. I’m always pretty anxious the day I pitch. So far so good after the first start as Texas manager Bruce Bochy would compliment the star, saying “he’s throwing free and easy.”</p><p>“It was a really, really nice job by Jacob,” said Rangers manager Bruce Bochy. “He got us to where we were hoping with five solid innings. He did his job and stepped up. He’s throwing free and easy. He’s excited about how he feels. That’s nice to see because he’s such a big part of this staff.
