One such player is Cam Schlittler, who, despite being drafted in the seventh round in 2022, has emerged as a legitimate big-league talent who has been performing well for the Yankees in the heat of the playoff race. In fact, Schlittler earned the win for the Yankees in their 9-3 victory against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, allowing just one run on five hits and two walks (seven strikeouts) in 6.0 innings of work.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-cam-schlittler-burned-by-blue-jays-in-short-start">Schlittler was coming off a poor start</a> on the fifth of September when he lasted just 1.2 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays, with manager Aaron Boone pulling him early after he allowed four earned runs in a 7-1 defeat. Against the Blue Jays, the Yankees’ 24-year-old starter’s timing was off and Toronto’s hitters were reading him like a book.</p><p>Thus, the adjustment Schlittler made in his latest win, which came against a Tigers team that’s leading the AL Central with am 84-63 record, was to <a href="https://twitter.com/snyyankees/status/1966331326975357250" rel="noopener">be more unpredictable</a> — and it clearly worked for him and the Yankees.</p><p>“[The adjustment I made from last start was] probably not tipping my pitches. He knows that he can pitch in the strike zone, which is a big part of it. I think that part of the game is important. When you get to the postseason, you’re probably facing teams that control the zone a little bit better, so you’re not going to get as much reckless chase in those lineups. I think the fact that he can throw his fastball in the zone, and he does at a high rate, would give you a chance in the postseason.”</p><p>Over 48.1 innings, Schlittler has posted a 2.61 ERA and recorded 54 strikeouts. The Walpole native is one of four pitchers in franchise history to have at least 50 strikeouts and a sub-3.00 ERA in his first nine career games, joining Dave Righetti, Orlando Hernandez, and Masahiro Tanaka.</p><p>More experienced starters such as Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, and Luis Gil all figure to make Postseason appearances for the Yankees. But the team could choose to grant Schlittler a start over another young arm like Will Warren.</p><p>“With each start, I’m definitely feeling more comfortable,” Schlittler said after throwing six innings of one-run baseball against the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. “I’m not trying to get too comfortable, but just kind of understand that I go out there and be confident in myself and do what I need to do for hopefully six innings.”</p><p>The<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-boone-optimistic-yankees-playoff-outlook"> Yankees own the American League’s top Wild Card spot</a> and are only two games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East standings.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

There were several players who stepped up to the plate and delivered, but it was rookie Cam Schlittler who <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46035188/yankees-sweep-rays-record-tying-14-homers-2-games" rel="noopener">stole the show</a>, according to ESPN.</p><p>“Making his seventh major league start, Schlittler held the Rays scoreless and to one hit over a career-high 6⅔ innings,” ESPN wrote. “His bid for a perfect game ended when Chandler Simpson singled to lead off the seventh. Schlittler walked two after the hit but escaped with help from reliever Luke Weaver.</p><p>“Schlittler struck out eight, all swinging. It was the longest perfect-game bid by a Yankees rookie since Fritz Peterson went 6 1/3 innings against the White Sox on July 4, 1966.”</p><p>Even manager Aaron Boone was impressed with the rookie’s play, and noted this may have been the best he’s seen him all year.</p><p>“What a performance,” Boone said. “Dominant. Probably the best breaking ball he’s had all year to go with the fastball. He was just filling up the strike zone.”</p><p>As for the Yankees as a team, they’ve been getting hot at the right moment, and they’ve scored 19 runs in the past two games, and they’ve all come from homers. That made it the most consecutive runs they’ve scored via homers since 2020, when they had 20 straight.</p><p>In their win against the Rays it also made it the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-new-york-ties-franchise-record-with-insane-home-run-performance-vs-rays">first time in Yankees history</a> that multiple players hit multiple home runs in consecutive games. Giancarlo Stanton, Cody Bellinger, and Jose Caballero each hit two in their win against the Rays a night earlier.</p><p>The Yankees are currently 69-57 and are in second place in the AL East, and there’s a chance that they can creep up on the Toronto Blue Jays, who are just four games ahead of them.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
