Before the win on Wednesday, San Francisco had lost five out of their last six games, and they have still lost five of seven currently. Because of the slump, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-news-camilo-doval-slapped-with-harsh-reality-by-gabe-kapler-after-another-blown-save-vs-phillies" rel="noopener">the Giants have slid down</a> the wild card standings and are now in three-way tie for the final playoff spot. This certainly isn’t the time of year to be going through a bad stretch, and part of the issue has been closing games, specifically for pitcher Camilo Doval.</p><p>While the Giants did end up getting the win in extras on Wednesday, things did almost slip away. The Giants were leading 5-2 in the bottom of the 9th, and Bryce Harper tied things up with a three-run shot off of Camilo Doval. This was Doval’s <a href="https://twitter.com/PavlovicNBCS/status/1694487831987572879" rel="noopener">fourth straight outing blowing</a> a save, making him the first player in Giants history to blow a save in four straight outings. Being the first player in a team’s history to do something can be very good or very bad. In this case, it’s very bad.</p><p>Luckily for Doval, the Giants did get the win on Wednesday to stay inside the wild card picture. The game went into extras after Harper’s home run, and San Francisco won 8-6. However, San Francisco needs to turn things around quickly, or else they will see their playoff chances go out the window. The Giants are currently 66-61 and their three-way tie is with the Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks. The Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs are above those three teams. They are way behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West division and also on the outside looking in of the Wild Card picture in the NL. Every game matters for the Giants, which is why it’s frustrating for them to see Camilo Doval be a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-news-camilo-dovals-meltdown-phillies-draws-blunt-truth-bomb-gabe-kapler" rel="noopener">letdown on the mound</a> of late.</p><p>On <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-vs-phillies-prediction-odds-pick-how-to-watch-8-23-2023" rel="noopener">Wednesday night</a>, Doval blew yet another save, his fourth in a row and the second in the series against the Philadelphia Phillies. After the game, Giants manager Gabe Kapler shared his thoughts about the ongoing struggle of the closer, per the Associated Press (h/T ESPN).</p><p><i>“We felt a three-run cushion and a save situation was the right spot for him,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/recap/_/gameId/401472921" rel="noopener">It obviously didn’t go well</a>. The game is moving fast on him. It’s not uncommon for a guy on the younger side. He’s had big game experience, but that doesn’t mean you feel right in every situation.”</i></p><p>Fortunately for the Giants, team newcomer Paul DeJong brought his A-game with him and helped San Francisco score an 8-6 victory in extra innings. The San Francisco Giants had to endure and nurse the pain of<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/phillies-news-trea-turner-sends-heartwarming-message-to-fans-after-heroics-in-win-vs-giants" rel="noopener"> losing to the Philadelphia Phillies</a>. It certainly does not help that the fate of the game was literally in the palm of Camilo Doval but it slipped away. Gabe Kapler thought that they had the win in their back pockets but just could not fathom that they lost.</p><p>The Phillies narrowly escaped defeat at <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/giants-news-san-francisco-land-former-cardinals-all-star-paul-dejong-after-let-go-blue-jays" rel="noopener">the hands of the Giants</a> with a three-to-four scoreline. Trea Turner shot his line drive to Camilo Doval but it went off the pitcher’s glove. It gave Philadelphia two runs which consequently ended the game. Everything had been going well for San Francisco up until the ninth inning. Even their rookie, Kyle Harrison, proved that they were in control at certain points of the game.</p><p>But, as fate would have it, the Giants lost. Manager Gabe Kapler posits that Doval has been one of the most clutch players in the MLB. It was just unfortunate that he could not catch the ball to save their inning. More than that, he may have said some words that may<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/recap/_/gameId/401472906" rel="noopener"> affect team chemistry</a>, via ESPN.</p><p>“When you feel you have the best closer in the game out there in the ninth to win the game, it’s disappointing,” the Giants manager said about that missed catch that cost them the game.
