However, none have more homers in a season than Perez at 48. We are halfway through the season right now, and Raleigh is on pace for 64 home runs. He would shatter the record that Perez broke in 2021 when he surpassed Bench’s record that had stood since 1970, when he smashed 45 for the Cincinnati Reds.</p><p>With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-cal-raleigh-adds-mlb-home-run-record-32nd-blast">Raleigh’s 32 home runs this season</a>, he joins another elite list of players who have done that. Not having George Kirby has hurt the team, while Emerson Hancock and Bryce Miller have not been great. With that said, there are two starting pitcher spots that the Mariners could improve upon. Seattle adding a starting pitcher would be beneficial.</p><p>The hitters need to improve drastically, as well. This is especially true at the corner infield positions. The team just <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-seattle-makes-surprising-rowdy-tellez-roster-decision">DFA’d Rowdy Tellez</a>, so first base is a huge need. Donovan Solano is not having a bad year, but Seattle could use someone with more power. A first baseman should be at the top of the list in Seattle.</p><p>There are more trades the Mariners could make to improve their roster, but these seem to be the two biggest needs.</p><h2><b>The Mariners should make an attempt for Josh Naylor</b></h2><p>Josh Naylor is a <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/player/_/id/17627/josh-naylor" rel="noopener">free agent after this season</a>. He is also one of the best pure hitters in baseball right now. It is yet to be seen whether or not the Arizona Diamondbacks will be open to a trade for the star first baseman, but he would make an impact in Seattle’s lineup immediately.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-trade-proposal-lands-josh-naylor-diamondbacks">Mariners have already been linked to Naylor</a> quite a few times. On the season, Naylor is slashing .307/.363/.469 with 10 home runs, 53 RBI, 10 stolen bases, just 41 strikeouts, and 42 runs scored in 76 games played. He is one of the better first baseman in the MLB, and it would take a lot to bring him to Seattle.</p><p>Because of his contract, his age, and his skill, the price for Naylor is most likely high. Seattle would have to give up a little bit to get him. Still, he is worth the price.</p><p>Despite the price tag, if the Mariners want to win this year, they will have to go out and get someone like Naylor to fill the hole at first base in the lineup.</p><h2><b>The Mariners should trade for Sandy Alcantara</b></h2><p>It is no secret that the Miami Marlins are struggling significantly this season. They are in fourth place in the National League East, and there are quite a few players they can get a pretty good return for. One of those players is right-handed starter, Sandy Alcantara.</p><p>On the season, Alcantara has a 6.69 ERA through 15 games started. He has thrown 74 innings, struck out 59, and opponents are hitting just under .260 off him. Those stats do not seem great, but Alcantara is slowly starting to regain his star form. In the month of June, Alcantara has an ERA under 3.00, and he has struck out 19 batters while walking only five. Along with that, he is holding opponents to a .207 batting average.</p><p>With his performance starting to get better, the Mariners would be smart to trade for him while they can. Seattle is now more than five games behind the Astros in their division and cling to the last wild card spot in the American League.</p><p>Raleigh is in the middle of a below average season in the field. There are older catchers having success in Major League Baseball this season, but they are rare. He has not said anything about moving on from the Mariners, but a move could benefit both sides. Garver is in the final year of his two-year deal with Seattle, making him a good rental option for a contender struggling at catcher.</p><p>Wilson had high hopes for Garver when he joined Seattle in 2024, but his numbers have underwhelmed. However, his numbers have not displayed the growth that Wilson wants to see. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-make-roster-moves-after-luke-raley-injury-diagnosis">Raley’s absence from the lineup with an oblique injury</a> could give him the benefit of the doubt in his managers eyes.</p><p>While his contract is affordable, the outfielder-turned first baseman simply is not hitting good enough to secure his spot on the roster. Almost every team ahead of Seattle in the AL standings have an offensively-gifted first baseman fueling their team’s power.</p><p>In order for the Mariners to put themselves in the best position to compete, they need to be at their best across the diamond. Raley is also a below average fielder at first base, something Seattle cannot afford in the postseason. High-level first baseman could be on the market, and Raley leaving could be the price of doing business for the Mariners.</p><h2>Third Baseman Jorge Polanco</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Seattle-Mariners-designated-hitter-Jorge-Polanco-7-hits-a-two-run-single-.jpg"><figcaption>Stephen Brashear-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>At the plate, Polanco is not having a bad season at all. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-news-jorge-polanco-player-of-the-week-history-1998">Seattle’s designated hitter was named AL Player of the Week</a> at the beginning of the season. He has maintained his production throughout the season, even as his role has changed. He now serves as the Mariners’ DH and is one of the pillars of the offense. However, he could be the first player to go in any big deal that Seattle makes.</p><p>Wilson has relied on Polanco to provide power outside of Raleigh in his lineup. Despite his success in 2025, the 12-year veteran is not safe at the deadline. The Rafael Devers trade proved that stars could be moved from their teams later this summer. For a Mariners team looking to bring in a difference-maker, Polanco could be the catalyst.</p><p>Giancarlo Stanton, Luis Robert Jr., and other former All-Stars could be on the trade block as the July 31 deadline gets closer. Wilson and Seattle cannot afford not to explore all of their options when it comes to improving the roster. Losing Polanco would be a tough blow. He’s hitting the ball on the line, and then occasionally he’s getting … underneath it a little bit more and driving it out of the ballpark.”</p><p>The 28-year-old is also three home runs away from matching Ken Griffey Jr. for the most before the Midsummer Classic in Mariners history. Raleigh signed a six-year extension in March and could potentially end his season with multiple career-high marks.</p><p>To put his recent play into perspective, Raleigh is now only two home runs and nine doubles away from matching his previous single-season highs.
