The milestone surpasses the 1993 Blue Jays, who held the previous record with 44 comeback wins in a season, a year that ended with a World Series title.</p><p>A sellout crowd of 42,461 witnessed the latest rally, which came after Toronto trailed from the opening inning until the bottom of the ninth. Down 4-2 entering their final frame, the Blue Jays pieced together a dramatic three-run surge. Daulton Varsho opened the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on pitcher Keegan Akin’s throwing error. Ernie Clement followed with a single, and pinch-hitter Joey Loperfido drove in Varsho with another base hit. Andres Gimenez then tied the game with a single of his own.</p><p>George Springer reached on catcher’s interference to load the bases, setting the stage for Alejandro Kirk. Battling through a 0-for-19 skid entering the day, Kirk lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Loperfido for the decisive run. It was Kirk’s first RBI since September 1 and Toronto’s major league-leading 45th comeback of the year.</p><p>The Orioles had looked in control for most of the afternoon. Rookie Coby Mayo’s solo homer off Braydon Fisher in the top of the ninth extended Baltimore’s lead to 4-2, seemingly putting the game out of reach. That hit was Mayo’s eighth of the season. Earlier, Gunnar Henderson’s first-inning RBI double and a run-scoring groundout gave Baltimore an early 2-0 cushion.</p><p>On the mound, Orioles starter Tomoyuki Sugano was sharp, limiting Toronto to four hits over six innings. He induced two double plays and struck out four, even after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit him on the left foot with a 113 mph line drive in the first inning. Sugano had also been hit in the foot during his previous start against the Dodgers, but managed to pitch through it again. His lone mistake Saturday was surrendering Addison Barger’s 20th home run of the season, a solo shot in the fifth inning that cut the deficit to 2-1.</p><p>For Toronto, veteran Max Scherzer overcame a rough first inning to settle in. After allowing two runs in the opening frame, the 41-year-old retired 15 of the next 18 batters, finishing with five innings pitched, two runs allowed on four hits, two walks, and five strikeouts over 91 pitches. His fastball topped at 95.2 mph and averaged 93.9.</p><p>Toronto’s bullpen held just enough. Tommy Nance and Eric Lauer each tossed scoreless frames before Seranthony Dominguez allowed a run in the eighth. Fisher (6-0) earned the win despite giving up Mayo’s ninth-inning homer. Tony Mansolino and the organization decided to give prospects like Dylan Beavers and Samuel Basallo a chance. The results have been encouraging to say the least.</p><p>Basallo was one of the team’s top prospects when he arrived in the big leagues earlier this season. The start that he got off to was so good that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-baltimore-top-prospect-massive-67-million-extension">Orioles signed him to a lucrative contract</a> that keeps him in Baltimore for years to come. Beavers, on the other hand, has had less time to get acclimated to the majors. However, he has shown flashes of future stardom with Baltimore.</p><p>At this point in the season, the Orioles can kiss the playoffs goodbye. However, Baltimore’s veterans spoke about how important the rest of the season is. For Mansolino, one piece of the puzzle is figuring out which prospects have a chance to be contributors at the next level. However, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-fans-erupt-waste-yoshinobu-yamamoto-near-no-hitter">Orioles have taken on the role of spoiler</a>. The team has won eight of nine games in September and five of six matchups against contenders. Baltimore has the Toronto Blue Jays in its sights next and will receive a boost from <a href="https://www.baltimorebaseball.com/sports/orioles-mlb/2025/09/12/orioles-activate-tyler-oneill-injured-list-2-richdubroff/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=orioles-activate-tyler-oneill-injured-list-2" rel="noopener">the return</a> of Tyler O’Neill.</p><p>The Orioles activated O’Neill from the 10-day IL on Friday, per Rich Dubroff of Baltimore Baseball. The outfielder will return to the team in time for the series opener against Toronto.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-injury-update-phillies">O’Neill landed on the IL</a> most recently with right wrist discomfort. He’s been sidelined by the ailment since August 5, missing the last 31 games.</p><h2><b>Tyler O’Neill will return after 17th-career IL stint</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Tyler-ONeill-ii.jpg"><figcaption>James A. Pittman-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/tyler-oneill-orioles-agree-to-huge-49-5-million-contract">Orioles signed O’Neill</a> to a three-year, $49.5 million contract in December. Unfortunately, he’s missed the majority of his debut campaign with Baltimore. The eighth-year veteran has been placed on the injured list three times this season.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-make-tough-tyler-oneill-move-amid-neck-injury">O’Neill suffered neck soreness</a> in April, which sidelined him for 14 games. Then a shoulder impingement in May led to a 45-game absence. O’Neill returned to the lineup in July but again landed on the injured list with the wrist ailment in early August. All told, he’s missed 91 games so far this season.</p><p>The Orioles were aware that durability has been a persistent issue in O’Neill’s career. He’s only played more than 96 games twice in eight seasons and he’s never played more than 138 games. The outfielder has made 17 trips to the IL since debuting in 2018.</p><p>When on the field, O’Neill offers tantalizing upside. In the two seasons he was able to play more than 100 games he topped 30 home runs. And he’s a complete player, with two Gold Gloves for his work in left.</p><p>O’Neill has primarily played right field since joining the Orioles. Unfortunately, he hasn’t lived up to his dual threat billing when in the lineup this season. O’Neill is slashing .210/.293/.434 with eight home runs, 23 RBI, 20 runs scored, 100 OPS+ and 0.0 bWAR in 43 games.</p><p>O’Neill will return to the Orioles lineup as the team attempts to create some momentum for 2026 with a strong finish. In addition to the upcoming series against the Blue Jays, Baltimore still has seven games remaining against the New York Yankees this season. That’s what happened when they got a 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and they were able to get the series sweep.</p><p>Four of their last five games ended with walkoff wins, and they have won eight of their last nine games. Cade Povich <a href="https://www.masnsports.com/blog/entry/orioles-get-dramatics-done-earlier-in-3-2-win-over-pirates" rel="noopener">spoke about the win</a> and how those types of games show the fight the team has as the final stretch of the season is here.</p><p>“Obviously, we love when we’re able to go out and put up seven, eight, nine runs and blow teams out, but I think you really see the heart and the effort these guys put in, in these close games,” Povich said via Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports. “Obviously, with the walkoffs and even today, Beavs having the go-ahead hit, as well, it just shows kind of the fight of this team, and I think it shows a lot for the future.”</p><p>The Orioles are currently 69-77, and though they may not have a chance of making the postseason, the run that they’ve had over the past few weeks has been good for confidence going into the offseason.</p><p>One positive for the team has been their relievers as they’ve registered a 1.14 ERA in the month of September, allowing one earned run or fewer in nine straight games.</p><p>“Obviously, a lot of young guys down there, and I think they’ve gained a lot more experience,” Povich said. “They’ve kind of learned more of themselves at the big-league level, and they’ve done a fantastic job. So even with guys getting on, even when things maybe get a little dicey, they stay cool and are able to grind it out and keep the score down, let our offense come back in and score one. As the ball drifted toward the right-center wall, the rookie outfielder gave chase, only to pull up short as the ball disappeared into the seats. To some, it looked like Pages quit on the play. In reality, he <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/andy-pages-play-yoshinobu-yamamoto-no-hit-bid" rel="noopener">never had a chance.</a></p><p>The replay angles made Holliday’s Statcast-projected 362-foot shot appear catchable. But multiple Orioles staffers later confirmed that the ball cleared the wall and landed on a black railing roughly four feet behind the fence and about 18 inches higher. That positioning meant Pages would have needed superhuman reach to even touch it.</p><p>“I’d like to think that if there was any chance to make a play on a no-hitter play that you would just exhaust every effort,” manager Dave Roberts said afterward. “But again, I couldn’t tell, and I refuse to go back and look at it.” The reality is clear: short of growing Stretch Armstrong arms mid-sprint, Pages couldn’t have saved Yamamoto.</p><h2><b>Dodgers waste Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s near no-hitter</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Yoshinobu-Yamamoto_db7e47.jpg"></figure><p>Instead, the Dodgers watched Holliday’s homer flip a potential milestone into another gut punch. Yamamoto had been dazzling, mixing elevated fastballs with his trademark splitter and curveball. The Japanese ace struck out Alex Jackson and induced a flyout from Coby Mayo before Holliday’s swing spoiled it all.</p><p>“The location wasn’t bad,” Yamamoto said through an interpreter. “His swing, he just put a good swing on it.” His catcher for the night, Ben Rortvedt, agreed: “He didn’t get all of it, but he got enough to poke it out.”</p><p>What should have been a crowning moment unraveled into catastrophe. The Dodgers’ bullpen, already reeling from weeks of struggles, failed spectacularly. Blake Treinen let a two-out rally snowball into chaos, hitting Gunnar Henderson, walking two more, and forcing Roberts to summon closer Tanner Scott.</p><p>One night after blowing a save, Scott surrendered Emmanuel Rivera’s walk-off single, capping a 4–3 collapse that marked the Dodgers’ fifth straight loss. “I have to get one flipping out, and I didn’t do it,” Treinen admitted. “Yama deserves better than that.”</p><p>The bigger picture is no less concerning. Los Angeles has dropped seven of its last eight against last-place clubs, with the bullpen responsible for most of the damage. Scott has now allowed 10 homers this year, and Treinen’s ERA ballooned over four. The blast not only gave the Dodgers an early lead but also pulled Ohtani into a six-way tie for third place in MLB history for most leadoff home runs in a season. He now stands second only to Kyle Schwarber’s 15 (2024) and Alfonso Soriano’s 13 (2003).</p><p>Two innings later, Ohtani struck again. After working the count to 2-0, he hammered another pitch from Sugano 399 feet over the wall for his 48th homer of the season and his 23rd career multi-homer game. Betts followed immediately with a solo shot of his own, his second of the series, staking the Dodgers to a 3-0 lead. All three Dodgers home runs came off Sugano, who exited in the fourth inning after being struck on the foot by a Hyeseong Kim line drive.</p><p>Shohei Ohtani reached base in all five of his plate appearances, finishing 2-for-2 with two homers, three walks, and three runs scored. The game was also his first time this season reaching base five times. His 96 walks now tie his career high. Against Sugano specifically, Ohtani is a perfect 4-for-4 across their careers, including prior matchups in Nippon Professional Baseball.</p><p>Miguel Rojas added to the Dodgers’ offense with a single in the fourth inning, later scoring on a throwing error by Orioles catcher Alex Jackson. Rojas has been a steady presence at the plate, going 6-for-18 (.333) with two doubles during the road trip.</p><p>Clayton Kershaw worked a strong game on the mound, striking out eight and allowing two runs over 5 2/3 innings. The 37-year-old improved to 10-2 and won his sixth consecutive decision. Remarkably, it was the first time in his 18-year career that he had ever faced the Orioles, leaving Boston as the only team he has yet to defeat. Kershaw is now 8-1 in 12 starts following Dodgers losses this season, with Los Angeles winning nine of those games.</p><p>The Dodgers bullpen handled the rest. Rookie Justin Wrobleski struck out five straight batters over two scoreless innings, while Jack Dreyer closed the game for his third save.</p><p>Baltimore entered the game on a five-game winning streak, but managed only two runs in the sixth inning after Kershaw’s departure. After four straight losses, LA was riding Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s arm to a victory. The Dodgers ace was nearly flawless through 8.2 innings. Then everything fell apart. Yamamoto became the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-yoshinobu-yamamoto-suffers-shocking-twist-last-seen-1923">first pitcher in over 100 years</a> to lose a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning.</p><p>Handed a 3-1 lead and needing just one out, the Dodgers’ bullpen turned disappointment into catastrophe. The Orioles rallied for four runs in the ninth and walked off Los Angeles for the second straight game.</p><p>While manager <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-dave-roberts-no-complaints-after-shocking-loss-orioles">Dave Roberts had “no complaints”</a> following the devastating defeat, Blake Treinen was <a href="https://x.com/SportsNetLA/status/1964521197439504526" rel="noopener">not so forgiving</a> of his performance. “I had to get one flippin’ out, I didn’t do it… That’s a pretty low point for me, coming off the heels of kind of a tough stretch right here. He loaded the bases and walked in a run before being taken out. Tanner Scott replaced him and gave up a walk-off, two-run single. When the smoke cleared, Treinen ended up with the loss, allowing three runs on one hit, two walks and a HBP.</p><p>“Obviously command [was missing]. There’s really no words. You’re paid to be a professional and at least throw strikes, and I didn’t do that. Cost one of the better outings I’ve ever seen in my career with Yama. He deserves better than that. Offense deserves better than that. Just really sucks to be on that end of it. Put Tanner in a tough position to come in, where he’s key-holed to have to throw strikes,” Treinen said.</p><p>Although it was an unusual circumstance, the 11th-year veteran didn’t blame the no-hitter bid for his performance. “Oddly enough, I’ve had to do it once before. Back in ‘18. Sean Manaea. So I kinda understand that I pace myself– That’s not an excuse for how I performed. I’ve just gotta be better. But he loaded the bases before walking in a run.</p><p>With the score now 3-2, Scott got the ball. And he gave up a game-winning, two-run single to Emmanual Rivera. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-tanner-scott-blows-another-save-walk-off-home-run">Scott allowed a walk-off to the Orioles</a> for the second straight game and the Dodgers suffered their fifth consecutive loss. The team has now dropped seven of the last eight contests.</p><p>Unlike Roberts, Treinen isn’t good with the outcome. “I have to get one flippin’ out, and I didn’t do it,” he said, per Harris. “There’s really no words. You’re paid to be a professional and at least throw strikes, and I didn’t do that. Cost one of the better outings I’ve ever seen in my career with Yama. He deserves better than that. Offense deserves better than that. Just really sucks to be on that end of it,” he added.</p><p>With the San Diego Padres’ win on Saturday the Dodgers’ lead in the NL West is down to one game. He made it through three innings without giving up any hits or runs against one of the league’s flashiest offenses. However, Mansolino’s starter could not make it any further into the game. According to Baltimore Sun writer Matt Weyrich, there were <a href="https://x.com/ByMattWeyrich/status/1964116914445111561" rel="noopener">no specific details</a> on the pitcher’s injury.</p><p>“Dean Kremer is coming out of this game. Dietrich Enns replacing the Orioles starter after three scoreless innings against the Dodgers. No word yet on a specific injury,” Weyrich said.</p><p>Further reports confirmed that Kremer is dealing with <a href="https://x.com/ByMattWeyrich/status/1964117503698669818" rel="noopener">right forearm discomfort</a>, according to Weyrich.</p><p>Ohtani has done well on the mound after Dave Roberts gave him the green light earlier this season. However, the National League MVP candidate found himself in a pitcher’s duel against Kremer. When Enns came into the game in the fourth inning, the Dodgers’ offense was able to attack the young replacement. However, Kremer’s status is the Orioles’ main concern.</p><p>Baltimore’s season has been far from what it expected.
