However, there is a lot of talent at the top of baseball right now, which will make the upcoming trade deadline a fascinating one as teams try to level up before the home stretch.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/3-sneaky-trades-astros-must-make-boost-world-series-chances">Astros will certainly be one of those teams</a>, while the Baltimore Orioles could go either way after a very disappointing start to the season. While the Orioles will likely hang onto all of their young talent, outfielder Cedric Mullins could be someone who is on the way out. The Astros could be <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/06/29/milwaukee-brewers-nl-central-standings/84404488007/" rel="noopener">in position to take advantage</a> of that, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.</p><p>“The Houston Astros are aggressively looking for a left-handed bat on the market, with eyes on Orioles center fielder Cedric Mullins,” Nightengale wrote.</p><p>The Astros currently have a hole in the outfield and could use another lefty at the plate, and while Mullins is past his prime days he would still be a quality addition that would make the Houston lineup much deeper.</p><p>The former All-Star has struggled mightily so far this season, batting just .210 in 66 games while hitting 12 home runs and driving in 38 runs. As a result, a change of scenery and a return to a team contending for a playoff spot could do him some good.</p><p>At the moment, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/orioles-news-baltimore-gm-gets-100-real-on-upcoming-trade-deadline-amid-poor-season">Orioles are in the basement</a> of the AL East with a dreadful 35-47 record, which is far below their expectations after making the playoffs with such a young, promising core last season. Baltimore is 12 games back of the top spot in the division, so it might be a little early for it to punt on the season just yet. However, that time could be coming soon.</p><p>On the other hand, the Astros are looking very good and have built a 6.5-game lead in the AL West over the Seattle Mariners. Houston has done that thanks to a 7-3 stretch over their last 10 games and is playing some of its best baseball of the season at the moment.</p><p>While the Houston front office may be reluctant to make a change while the team is playing so well, taking a swing like adding Mullins is the kind of thing that has a chance to pay off in a big way in the long run.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The franchise has had a trying 2025 season, and currently sits at 35-46 in the American League East. Baltimore is 11.5 games out of first place in the division and seven games out of the last wild card spot. 2025 certainly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-cedric-mullins-speechless-collapse-rays">hasn’t been ideal for the Orioles</a>, and they must consider whether they should be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline, which is just over a month away.</p><p>Elias, who has been the general manager and executive vice president of the organization, <a href="https://www.mlb.com/orioles/news/mike-elias-discusses-orioles-as-2025-trade-deadline-approaches" rel="noopener">did not hold back</a> in addressing the franchise’s current state in an interview with MLB.com Orioles beat reporter Jake Rill. Elias’s statement, however, does give fans a little more hope that this squad could potentially turn their season around.</p><p>“We’re still fighting and playing for 2025. This is a team that we had high hopes for. We can see the talent on the team, but [we] just stumbled badly out of the gates and dug a hole, and that’s still haunting us. I think we’re playing better and things are moving in the right direction, but there is a deadline coming up, and we’re going to have to make a strategic decision around that sometime [within the next] month.</p><p>I don’t have an exact day in mind, but we’ll use our tools and judgment to decide when that might be. But for now, we’re hoping to keep playing well, keep racking up wins, staying within an arm’s reach of the Wild Card race in the meantime, but we will have to make a reasonable determination at some point in the next several weeks.”</p><p>Baltimore’s roster features a unique combination of youth and experience that the front office may need to shake up. Those three are still in their respective primes and are in the middle of productive individual seasons. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-baltimore-offense-hit-marks-unseen-25-years">Orioles’ offense scored 22 runs</a> in Friday’s game, the team’s most prolific output in 25 years. Unfortunately, the good vibes created by the dominant 22-8 win were dampened as the Orioles endured yet another injury.</p><p>Zach Eflin was forced to leave <a href="https://x.com/JakeDRill/status/1939059391468093514" rel="noopener">his start</a> against the Rays Saturday with lower back tightness, per MLB.com’s Jake Rill.</p><p>The veteran pitcher exited after one inning against his former team. Recently acquired ex-Braves reliever Scott Blewett took over in the second. However, neither pitcher fared well against the Rays. Eflin allowed four runs on five hits in his inning of work, while Blewett gave up four runs on two hits and three walks in 2 ⅔ innings.</p><h2><b>Zach Eflin suffers latest Orioles injury in brutal 2025 season</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Zach-Eflin-i.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. He was sidelined for over a month with the ailment, returning to the Orioles in mid May.</p><p>Baltimore has been plagued by injuries this season. The team currently has 11 players on the injured list, including three members of the rotation. Key starters Kyle Bradish and Grayson Rodriguez are both on the 60-day IL and have yet to pitch in 2025.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-baltimore-lands-rays-zach-eflin-trade-before-deadline">Orioles landed Eflin at the trade deadline</a> last season in a deal with the Rays. The 10th-year veteran pitched well for Baltimore in 2024, helping the team make a second-half playoff push. However, Eflin has struggled in his first full season with the Orioles. His ERA ballooned to 5.95 after getting shelled by the Rays. He entered the game with a 1.377 WHIP, 6.2 K/9 and paltry 71 ERA+.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-tony-mansolino-blames-grind-offensive-slump">Orioles have been in a dismal offensive slump</a>. After finishing last season as one of the best teams in Major League Baseball, Baltimore had high expectations in 2025. However, Orioles interim manager, Tony Mansolino, says that none of his players want out at the MLB trade deadline.</p><p>Coby Mayo, Ryan Mountcastle, and other Baltimore players have been rumored to be moved before the July 31 deadline. Despite the constant talks of trade, Mansolino has done his best to rally his roster. Baltimore is 5-5 over their last ten games entering Saturday’s matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-gunnar-henderson-makes-baltimores-playoff-hopes-clear">Henderson recently told reporters the team had figured something out at the plate</a>, but it has not maintained itself. The losses have some experts wondering if the best move for Mansolino and the front office is to sell high on veterans and focus on 2026.</p><p>With Mayo and others predicted to finish the year on a new team, Mansolino shot down those rumors. According to Baltimore Sun reporter Jacob Meyer, nobody on the Orioles’ roster <a href="https://x.com/jcalvinmeyer/status/1939009255501074781" rel="noopener">wants to abandon the team</a> for a better situation.</p><p>“Our guys have talked about our situation, where we’re at. They’ve all kind of banded together,” Mansolino said. “None of these guys want to get traded. They want to be here for a lot of reasons.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-fire-brandon-hyde-amid-horrid-start">The Orioles have done better since Baltimore fired Brandon Hyde</a>. However, it has not been enough to help them make a dent in their division. Despite their struggles, a playoff berth is not out of the question. Entering the weekend, the Orioles were seven games out of the last AL Wild Card spot.</p><p>Baltimore has more than half of the season to get back on track. The have a potential 2025 All-Star in Henderson, as well as players like Adley Rutschman and Jackson Holliday to lead a rebound. In order to make that happen, the Orioles need to navigate the trade deadline effectively, even if it means sending players like Mayo away.</p><p>Baltimore’s biggest issue is their pitching. With Grayson Rodriguez targeting the second half of the season for his 2025 Orioles debut, Mansolino has a lot more questions than answers in his rotation. After putting up 22 runs against the Rays on Friday, Baltimore’s offense proved that it can carry the team to wins with decent pitching supporting it.</p><p>Mansolino has his work cut out for him for the rest of the season. Emmanuel Rivera’s contract selected and RHP Kyle Tyler DFA”</p><p>Carlson, acquired earlier this year, has struggled to establish himself in the Orioles’ lineup. Over 40 games this season, he slashed just .241/.278/.389 with four home runs and 12 RBIs in 108 at-bats. </p><p>His 26.1% strikeout rate and 87 WRC+ were both well below league average, and despite a brief hot streak in June — batting .353 over his last 10 games — the Orioles opted to send him down to recalibrate.</p><p>The demotion allows the club to keep him under team control and give him everyday reps in Triple-A Norfolk, where he can work on plate discipline and regain his confidence. The move was also made easier by the fact that Carlson has minor-league options remaining, avoiding the need to expose him to waivers.</p><p>Meanwhile, the Rivera promotion adds a versatile right-handed infielder to the bench. Rivera hit .280 with a .358 OBP and 14 RBIs in 25 games for Triple-A Norfolk, showing enough consistency to earn another look at the big-league level. </p><p>His glove can provide stability at both corner infield spots, and he previously logged 26 games for Baltimore earlier this season with a .232 batting average.</p><p>To clear a 40-man roster spot for Rivera, the club designated right-hander Kyle Tyler for assignment. In their previous series against the Texas Rangers, they lost two out of three games, losing the scoring margin 13-11.</p><p>They face Tampa Bay once again, a team they lost two out of three contests against two weeks ago. This time, however, Baltimore made a statement win.</p><p>They scored three or more runs in five innings as their offense overwhelmed the Rays’ bullpen. Unfortunately for the visitors, they only scored one last run while the Orioles boomed with 17 from the fifth inning onward.</p><p>Baltimore was relentless with their hitting, landing 22 hits in their 46 at-bats. They even got four home runs throughout the game, getting them from Jackson Holiday, Gunnar Henderson, Gary Sanchez, and Coby Mayo.</p><p>The pitcher who got the win on Baltimore’s behalf was Tomoyuki Sugano. He was on the mound for five innings as he struck out two batters while allowing nine hits and seven runs. He finished with a 4.06 ERA after the game ended.</p><p>Baltimore improved to a 35-46 record on the season but remain at the bottom of the AL East Division standings. They are four games behind the Boston Red Sox and nine games behind the Toronto Blue Jays.</p><p>The Orioles will prepare for Game 2 of their series against the Rays. They are in last place, but wait until they get healthy. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-tony-mansolino-blames-grind-offensive-slump">bats have not produced</a> for most of the year, but wait until the lineup heats up. The pitching staff is in shambles, but maybe general manger Mike Elias will get more reinforcements soon. As the team’s struggles persist deep into June, it has become extremely difficult to slap a conjunction on this brutal season.</p><p>The Orioles (34-46) are seven games out of an American League Wild Card berth, have lost other key players to injury and are in danger of becoming a seller at the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/3-orioles-trade-block-2025-deadline">July 31 MLB trade deadline</a>. A turnaround is possible, but it is improbable. That is the “but” that weighs most heavily on fans’ minds right now. In tough times like these, the best thing Birdland could hope for is <a href="https://x.com/masnRoch/status/1938678653149196637" rel="noopener">a bit of encouraging news</a>. Fortunately, the O’s injured first baseman mercifully obliged on Friday.</p><p>“Ryan Mountcastle said his hamstring feels better,” Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reported. “Started a hitting progression. Thinks will be closer to 8 weeks than 12.”</p><h2><b>Will the Orioles ignite in time?</b></h2><p>The 2015 first-round draft pick was given a two-to-three-month recovery time frame after suffering a Grade 2 right hamstring strain at the end of May, and it appears as if he is on track to return at the top end of that estimation. If everything continues to progress nicely, Mountcastle could rejoin Baltimore in late July.</p><p>The Orioles cannot afford to play the waiting game anymore, however. They need to win games now. The current lineup, which is also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-adley-rutschman-injury-move">missing two-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman</a>, needs to get the job done. Although Gunnar Henderson is slashing an adequate .271/.346/.422/.769, more is expected from a talent of his caliber. He can potentially set the tone by immediately going on a home run spree. Then, when players come off the injured list, perhaps Baltimore’s offense will collectively be equipped to carve up opposing pitching.</p><p>Mountcastle himself has yet to erupt this season. He is batting .246 with only two home runs, 15 RBIs and an abysmal .628 OPS in 187 at-bats. Ideally, the 28-year-old will be ready to tear the cover off the baseball once he returns. Until then, the Orioles must dig deep in order to overcome their presently bleak odds. It is only going to get harder, as the Birds welcome in the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays (46-35) on Friday night.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But since returning to the rotation for good on May 26, his ERA in six starts is 2.90. He also has struck out 37 in 31 innings.”</p><p>“The biggest concern for a team interested in acquiring Morton might be paying the balance of his $15 million salary. At the deadline, he still would be owed nearly $5 million.”</p><p>Morton had already enjoyed a long career prior to joining the Orioles. He was drafted in 2002 and has been a staple in MLB since 2008 when he made his debut with the Atlanta Braves. He owns a 4.07 career ERA, and is a two-time World Series champion.</p><p>The New Jersey native’s Postseason pedigree could be a factor that convinces a contender to roll the dice and trade for the wily righty. Through 18 playoff appearances and 80 innings, Morton has earned a 3.60 ERA.</p><p>His World Series runs with the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves both saw him serve as a key starter. Additionally, Morton has shown he’s not afraid to be a bullpen arm if needed.</p><p>While concerns about age are valid, the two-time All-Star has never relied on velocity, and has proven to be crafty over the course of his career.</p><p>These traits could be useful for a young team looking for a veteran presence down the stretch, or even a more experienced club that is looking for a player who has played on the game’s biggest stage.</p><p>It remains to be seen if a team will be willing to trade for Morton and take on his salary. The team has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-lose-another-catcher-adley-rutschman-injury">been plagued by injuries</a> and the players healthy enough to take the field aren’t hitting. The Orioles have been shutout eight times this season – twice in the last five games. Opposing pitchers have taken no-hit bids into the seventh inning or later in three of the last five games. And Baltimore has gone 1-4 over that span.</p><p>Interim manager Tony Mansolino <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/orioles-nearly-no-hit-by-jacob-degrom" rel="noopener">attempted to explain</a> the offense’s lack of production following the Orioles’ 7-0 loss to the Texas Rangers Wednesday. “I think there’s a little bit of fatigue right now. This has been a grind. I think you can attribute a little bit of that to that,” Mansolino said, per Jake Rill of MLB.com.</p><p>“I think guys are trying to win. I think there’s a little bit of, not anxiety, but maybe a tick of pressing at times,” he added.</p><h2><b>The Orioles fended off three near no-hitters in five games</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Orioles.jpg"><figcaption>Mitch Stringer-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Orioles have been outscored 26-13 in the last five games, contributing to their -87 run differential, the third-worst in baseball. Jacob deGrom was the latest pitcher to dominate Baltimore. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-orioles-fans-applaud-jacob-degrom-near-no-hitter">veteran ace came close to a no-hitter</a>, taking his bid into the eighth inning before giving up a single to Colton Cowser. It was the Orioles’ first and last hit of the game.</p><p>Converted reliever Jacob Latz made the third start of his four-year career on Tuesday and he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-bruce-bochy-gushes-about-terrific-jacob-latz-after-no-hit-bid">took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning</a> against Baltimore. The Orioles rallied in that game, scoring five runs after breaking up the no-no. But the Rangers went on to win 6-5 in the 10th inning.</p><p>The Orioles’ brutal five-game stretch began against the New York Yankees on Saturday. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-ny-lose-no-hitter-1-batter-after-clarke-schmidts-exit">Clarke Schmidt threw seven hitless innings</a> against Baltimore before Aaron Boone went to the bullpen. Schmidt had thrown 103 pitches so the Yankees manager turned things over to reliever JT Brubaker, who immediately gave up a hit to Gary Sanchez. But that would be the Orioles’ only hit in a 9-0 loss.</p><p>Injuries have played a major role in Baltimore’s struggles this season. Eleven players are currently in the IL, including Adley Rutschman, Ryan Moutcastle, Grayson Rodriguez and Kyle Bradish, who aren’t expected back until after the All-Star break.</p><p>The Orioles fell to 34-46 following Wednesday’s shutout loss to the Rangers.
