With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/colorado-rockies/rockies-news-kris-bryant-degenrative-disk-disease-injury">misfortune to the Rockies like with Kris Bryant’s injury</a>, the team could be in the process in finding a replacement for Black if he were to step aside.</p><p>In a recent column by USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, he spoke about the future plans for Colorado and Black and if they have to choose his replacement, it would be <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2025/04/20/jared-porter-mets-fired-text-messages-mental-health/83180255007/" rel="noopener">third-base coach Warren Schaeffer.</a></p><p>“While Colorado Rockies hitting coach Hensley Meulens was the fall guy for their franchise-worst 3-15 start, fired and replaced by Clint Hurdle, manager Bud Black’s run could also be coming to an end after the season,” Nightengale wrote. “Black has yet to decide whether he even wants to keep managing after this year, but if this indeed is his final year, his replacement is expected to be third-base coach Warren Schaeffer.”</p><p>The 67-year-old manager in Black has been with the ball club since 2017, and before that, was with the San Diego Padres in the same role from 2007 to 2015. He has played 170 games in four seasons with the Rockies, hitting just 17 homers to go along with a negative 1.6 WAR. Bryant, who’s making $27 million this year, still has three years and $81 million left on his contract.”</p><p>“We haven’t produced offensively,” Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt said. “It’s been a struggle so far. It was the second straight 100-loss season for the Rockies. This year, Colorado appears poised to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-power-rankings-vol-5-national-league-reigns-supreme">take over as MLB’s worst team</a> thanks to an ugly 3-15 start to the 2025 campaign.</p><p>Offensive production has been near-nonexistent for the Rockies as they have scored a Major League-low 52 runs entering play on Thursday. The team is hoping to <a href="https://x.com/harding_at_mlb/status/1912956273353466333" rel="noopener">turn things around</a> at the plate with a coaching change. Colorado fired hitting coach Hensley Meulens and replaced him with former manager Clint Hurdle, per MLB.com’s Thomas Harding on X.</p><p>The 67-year-old Hurdle managed the Rockies from 2002-2009 and led the team to its only World Series appearance in 2007. He took over as the Pittsburgh Pirates’ skipper in 2011 and spent nine seasons with the team <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/pittsburgh-pirates/pirates-news-pittsburgh-fires-clint-hurdle">before being fired in 2019</a>.</p><h2><b>Can Clint Hurdle get the Rockies back on track?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Clint-Hurdle-2.jpg"><figcaption>Photo By Byron Hetzler-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Since his time in Pittsburgh ended, Hurdle has remained close to the Rockies. He rejoined the organization as special assistant to the general manager in 2021, a role that allowed him to work closely with Minor League players in Colorado’s farm system.</p><p>Hurdle’s familiarity with the Rockies’ Minor Leaguers could play a big role in his new gig as hitting coach as Colorado is leaning into a youth movement. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/colorado-rockies/rockies-news-colorado-call-up-top-prospect-2-7-start">team has called up its top prospects</a> after a slow start.</p><p>While those players, including number seven prospect Adael Amador and number eight prospect Zac Veen, have struggled at the plate in the majors, the Rockies believe Hurdle can <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/rockies-replace-hitting-coach-hensley-meulens-with-clint-hurdle" rel="noopener">make a difference</a>.</p><p>“It’s been a struggle from day one with the strikeouts and the lack of production… We think this move is going to help. Clint is the right person at the right time, with his knowledge with the majority of the position-player group here that he’s worked with in the Minor Leagues. There are just four or five guys he hasn’t been involved with,” Rockies GM Bill Schmidt explained, per MLB.com.</p><p>The rookies aren’t the only players struggling in Colorado. The lineup has failed to produce from top to bottom, including former MVP Kris Bryant who’s making another trip to the IL due to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/colorado-rockies/rockies-news-kris-bryant-degenrative-disk-disease-injury">degenerative disk disease in his back</a>. From there, the Dodgers just kept hitting, with Ohtani returning to the plate for a second time, hitting a two-run RBI before Márquez was pulled after just two outs. After a walk to Mookie Betts to get a second man on base, Freeman grounded out to end Colorado’s misery.</p><p>Pretty brutal stuff, right? Well wait, it gets even worse, as according to Rockies Insider scribe Patrick Lyons, this outing will go down as <a href="https://x.com/PatrickDLyons/status/1912698244188278953" rel="noopener">Marquez’s worst as a pro so far</a>.</p><p>“Rockies Germán Márquez is done in the first inning after surrendering seven runs to the Dodgers, five with” two outs,” Lyons wrote. “It’s tied for the shortest start of his 10 seasons in the Majors.”</p><p>Now granted, the Rockies almost stopped the bleeding themselves, but Adael Amador couldn’t get the ball to first base with two outs, and just like that, the Dodgers started getting the ball into play, allowing a series of RBIs that put them up 7-1 before Bobby Miller could return to the mound.</p><p>Are the Dodgers locks to win the game? No, they are not, as they are starting Miller due to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/dodgers-news-blake-snell-injury-update-best-case-scenario-dave-roberts">Blake Snell being on IL</a>, and he gave up six runs before the second inning came to an end. Still, with a bench loaded up with interesting arms and enough firepower to remain in any game, it’s safe to assume LA fans will remain locked in as they cheer their favorite team on to victory.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

In his free time, he likes to be outside or read.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Colorado Rockies</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Braxton Fulford has been waiting for his call-up to join the Colorado Rockies, but when Pedro Lopez, the manager of his Triple-A team in Albuquerque, called him on Monday, he <a href="https://www.mlb.com/rockies/news/braxton-fulford-major-league-debut-with-rockies" rel="noopener">got much different news</a>.</p><p>“Police are at your house,” Lopez told his catcher.</p><p>Luckily for the Rockies prospect, his manager was just pulling his leg. There were no police officers at his house. Instead, Fulford quickly packed his things after hearing what his skipper really had to say.</p><p>“Nah, I’m just kidding, you’re going to L.A. You’re going to the big leagues.”</p><p>Before he knew it, Fulford, a 26-year-old catcher, was on a plane. He flew to Dodger Stadium to join the Colorado Rockies for their game that night against Los Angeles.</p><p>“Elated,” said Fulford about his parent’s reaction to the news. “We all were. Got a little emotional and just enjoyed the moment.”</p><p>Fulford and his family got to experience his first night with the Colorado Rockies. Even though Fulford didn’t play in Monday or Tuesday’s game, Rockies manager Bud Black confirmed that the catcher will make his MLB debut on Wednesday in the series finale.</p><p>Fulford joins a Rockies team that desperately needs an injection of energy in their lineup after losing their last five games amid a 3-14 start to the regular season. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/colorado-rockies/rockies-news-kris-bryant-degenrative-disk-disease-injury">loss of Kris Bryant</a> looms large as well. The Rockies are likely to continue giving chances to their prospects on the major league level as they search for players that can help the team rebound back into contention in the NL West. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/colorado-rockies/rockies-news-colorado-call-up-top-prospect-2-7-start">Fulford joins Zac Veen</a> as a young player to get the call.</p><p>For now, though, Fulford is focused on being a steady presence for the Rockies on both sides of the ball, especially against a premier opponent in the Dodgers.</p><p>“I’m hoping I can command the pitching staff. Get us through this lineup,” Fulton said about his expectations for his debut. “It’s a tough lineup, but our guys are more than capable of sitting them down. And then on top of that, just producing offensively. Scoring runs. Driving runners in. Entering Tuesday, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/mlb-power-rankings-vol-5-national-league-reigns-supreme">Rockies have the worst record</a> in the league with a 3-13 mark. Their last win came on April 10 against the Milwaukee Brewers, and they just got swept by the San Diego Padres and began a three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers with a loss.</p><p>Things are not going well for Colorado, and with a loaded National League West, the season already looks lost. To make things worse, former MVP and slugger Kris Bryant is now dealing with an injury. Bryant was <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44677255/rockies-outfielder-kris-bryant-lands-il-back-injury" rel="noopener">placed on the IL</a> with a lumbar degenerative disk disease, per ESPN.</p><p>‘The team said the move, retroactive to Sunday, is because of lumbar degenerative disk disease. Bryant saw noted orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles on Monday.’</p><p>After the move came through, Rockies manager Bud Black gave some more insight into Bryant’s IL stint.</p><p>“It’s been bothering him for a few days,” Black said. “We decided to be a little bit proactive and put him on the injured list. Hopefully in 10 days he’ll be back.”</p><p>The Rockies had high hopes when they signed Bryant to a seven-year, $182 million contract with the team ahead of the 2022 season, although things have certainly not gone as planned since then.</p><p>In 2022, Bryant played just 42 games, then 80 in 2023, and 37 in 2024 as he dealt with injury after injury.</p><p>In the spring, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/colorado-rockies/rockies-news-kris-bryant-promising-injury-update-spring-training-debut">Bryant gave a promising update</a> after dealing with back issues previously.</p><p>“I’m feeling good,” Bryant said. “There are days when (my back feels) a little cranky, but that’s a good thing for me because I know every day is not going to feel perfect…So, I’m finding ways to figure out how to work through certain things and certain motions that might give me a fit here and there.”</p><p>However, the latest update is not promising for Bryant or the Rockies, and Black called the injury an “aggravation.”</p><p>“This is an aggravation,” Black said. “We don’t want him to take any steps backwards by trying to push him through this. He’s going to have to manage his back, just like a lot of players have to manage certain body parts to get through the season.”</p><p>This year, Bryant is hitting just .154 with six total hits and one RBI, so there is more to be desired from the former MVP.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

As a result, a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/rockies-news-colorado-prospect-chase-dollander-athletics">youth movement could already be underway</a> in Colorado, as the team is reportedly set to promote one of their top prospects, outfielder Zac Veen.</p><p>Veen, who was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2020 MLB draft, climbed the ranks last year all the way up to Triple-A, which is where he started the 2024 campaign at. After posting a .387 batting average while hitting one home run and driving in eight runs, Veen has <a href="https://x.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/1909046659176407422" rel="noopener">already gotten the call to the majors</a>, with Jordan Beck getting optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.</p><p>“Rockies plan to promote outfielder Zac Veen on Tuesday and option Jordan Beck to Triple A, sources tell The Athletic. Consistency will be the key for Veen, but he certainly looked the part early on in Triple-A this season.</p><p>Conversely, the Rockies will be sending another one of their talented youngsters back to the minors with Beck getting demoted. However, given how Colorado is already looking to see what they’ve got in some of their prospects, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him find his way back to the majors at some point this season. Rockies reporter Kelsey Wingert-Linch wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that Dollander <a href="https://x.com/KelsWingert/status/1908203918334500873" rel="noopener">will make</a> his MLB debut on Sunday against the Athletics.</p><p>“Bud Black just announced the #Rockies No. 1 prospect, Chase Dollander, will start the game on Sunday at Coors Field. It will be his MLB debut after being drafted 9th overall in the 1st round in 2023 out of The University of Tennessee,” Wingert-Linch wrote.</p><p>Dollander, 23, has a bright future without question. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/zack-wheeler-dominates-rockies-sets-phillies-franchise-record">Rockies have struggled in recent seasons</a> and could use a new star on the roster.</p><h2><b>Will Chase Dollander become Rockies’ next ace?</b></h2><p>According to MLB.com, Dollander entered the 2025 season as the <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects" rel="noopener">No. 24 overall prospect</a> in the sport. His fastball reaches up to 99 MPH and he also throws a slider, curveball and changeup. Dollander’s slider is highly-regarded alongside his fastball.</p><p>As a young flame-throwing hurler, Dollander is still working on the command of his pitches. Many hard-throwing pitchers initially struggle with control. Dollander’s stuff will play at the big league level, though. If he can continue to develop the command of his pitches then the Rockies may have their next ace.</p><p>Pitching in the elevation of Colorado at Coors Field has proven to be a difficult task over the years. The Rockies have desperately needed reliable pitching as a result. Perhaps Dollander will emerge as a star and find success despite the challenges of the elevation.</p><p>Colorado’s offense has also endured its share of struggles. In the process, he made franchise history, becoming the first Phillies pitcher to go 13 consecutive regular-season starts allowing <a href="https://x.com/ScottLauber/status/1907587682638651585" rel="noopener">two earned runs or fewer</a> in six or more innings — the longest such streak in club history.</p><p>“It’s just Zack being Zack,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said postgame. “He’s a workhorse, and he sets the tone every time he takes the mound.”</p><p>Wheeler’s streak is the longest in MLB since Shane McClanahan did it in 2022 and places him among elite company. Only 28 pitchers in MLB history have <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/zack-wheeler-dominates-rockies-with-10-strikeouts" rel="noopener">achieved a run like this</a> since earned runs became an official stat in 1912 — names like Roger Clemens, Tom Seaver, Randy Johnson, and Greg Maddux.</p><h2><b>Zack Wheeler, Phillies dominant in win vs Rockies</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Zack-Wheeler.jpg"><figcaption>Bill Streicher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Wheeler’s only blemish Wednesday came in the seventh, when Hunter Goodman launched a solo homer off a 2-0 sinker. That was the second straight night Goodman took a Phillies starter deep — the only two runs Colorado has scored in the series. Despite the chilly, rainy weather, Wheeler took the mound in short sleeves, seemingly unfazed.</p><p>He induced a career-high 25 whiffs in a regular-season start, topping his previous high. His pitch mix was sharp as ever, relying on his fastball to get ahead before finishing hitters with his curve, cutter, and splitter. “I try not to overthink it,” Wheeler said. “I go out there, follow my routine, and try to give us a chance to win. That’s it.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/phillies-news-kyle-schwarber-edmundo-sosa-hot-start">Offensively, the Phillies got just enough done early</a> to support their ace. Kyle Schwarber stayed hot with an opposite-field RBI double in the fourth to score Alec Bohm, then scored himself moments later on a slow roller in front of the plate by J.T. Realmuto. Aggressive baserunning caught the Rockies napping and gave Philadelphia a 2-0 lead.</p><p>Trea Turner returned to the starting lineup after back spasms sidelined him earlier in the week, and he didn’t skip a beat — tallying three hits and an RBI. Edmundo Sosa, continuing to thrive in a utility role, collected three hits and two RBI of his own, pushing his team-leading total to nine hits through four games.</p><p>“Stud. So good,” Turner said of Sosa. “He’s a team player, he’s a winner. It’s great having him here.”</p><p>Despite loading the bases with no outs in the fifth, the Phils came up empty thanks to strikeouts by Harper, Bohm, and Schwarber. Still, they improved to 4-1 on the year and locked in their second consecutive series win to open 2025. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Colorado Rockies</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>When news broke that the Los Angeles Angels were <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/angles-news-la-releases-outfielder-mickey-moniak-noah-synergaard-trade-phillies">releasing former first overall pick Mickey Moniak</a> just before the opening day of the 2025 MLB season, it turned heads around the sport.</p><p>Why, fans wondered, would the Angels, who aren’t expected to be very good this season, opt to release such a high-upside prospect so early in his career when they only owed him $2 million on the year following arbitration?</p><p>Well, while fans will debate that one for weeks, months, or the rest of the season – especially if Moniak goes off this season – the Angels loss is the Colorado Rockies’ gain, as they’ve signed the outefielder to a new one-year deal that will at least be <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/mickey-moniak-rockies-contract" rel="noopener">partially subsidized by the fine folks in Anaheim</a>.</p><p>Originally drafted first overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2016, Moniak didn’t make it to the Phillies <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/moniami01.shtml" rel="noopener">big league club</a> until September of 2020, when he was promoted to the 40-man roster down the stretch. From there, he bounced around from the starting lineup to the bench and back to the minors before being traded to Los Angeles in August of 2022 <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/phillies-news-mickey-moniak-has-hurt-feelings-about-tenure">in a deal for Noah Syndergaard.</a></p><p>In LA, Moniak received plenty of run but didn’t do much with it, appearing in 228 games with 803 plate appearances but finished out his run with just 31 homers, 100 RBIs, and a batting average of .242, which is better than his marks in Philadelphia but not by much.</p><p>Now landing in Colorado as a depth addition ahead of opening day, Moniak might finally get a full season in the bigs to figure things out and highlight what kind of player he can be moving forward, be that a speedy utility man or a performer capable of doing even more with some additional development.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

His in-depth knowledge of two of the most passionate and raucous fan bases in the country gives him a truly unique writing voice.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Cleveland Guardians</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Cleveland Guardians have <a href="https://x.com/tim_stebbins/status/1903593804436779325" rel="noopener">completed a trade</a> with the Colorado Rockies that will reunite them with outfielder Nolan Jones in exchange for utility man Tyler Freeman, per MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins (originally reported by Thomas Harding).</p><p>The organization that first drafted Jones in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft is ready to give him another look. Cleveland traded him for infielder Juan Brito in November of 2022 but is clearly pleased with the progress he has made in Colorado.</p><p>Despite a brutal and injury-riddled 2024 season, which saw the 26-year-old bat just .227 with with three home runs in 79 games, Jones has flashed a great deal of talent in the past. Plenty of people expected a genuine breakout campaign with the Rockies last year, or even a possible All-Star selection, but maybe he needs a change of scenery to unlock his full abilities.</p><h2><b>Guardians look to round out roster before 2025 season</b></h2><p>Although the Guardians initially moved off of Jones, they have a track record of developing productive position players. He can provide added pop to a lineup that was looking quite thin following the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/diamondbacks-news-acquires-josh-naylor-trade-guardians">Josh Naylor trade</a> and David Fry’s elbow injury. Even if the Pennsylvania native does not return to his 2023 form (.297 batting average, 20 homers in 106 games), he seemingly carries a higher ceiling than the player Cleveland shipped out to the National League.</p><p>Freeman, a second-rounder himself, has a .223/.304/.329/.632 slash line through 206 games. He is still only 25 years of age, though, so perhaps the Rockies believe he can figure out something at the plate. His versatility should come in handy as well, but fans surely expected a bit more upside in a Nolan Jones trade package.</p><p>While Colorado continues its long rebuild, the wheels are turning in the Guardians’ front office. President of baseball operations Chris Antonetti struck <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cleveland-guardians/guardians-news-tanner-bibee-contract-extension">an agreement with starting pitcher Tanner Bibee</a> on a five-year contract extension and then quickly shifted his attention to getting a deal done with the Rockies. Regardless of how the franchise’s offseason approach works out, it appears motivated to stay in the American League playoff conversation.</p><p>Jones does not have much time to adjust to his new reality.
