But, not everybody can do that.”</p><p>Cortes will take the hill for the first time with the Brewers on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. When he was introduced with Milwaukee’s pitchers on Opening Day, he got a solid hand from The Bronx faithful. But now, the lineup will face their old friend after an Opening Day victory.</p><p>On Opening Day, the Yankees entered the ninth inning with a 4-1 lead. That brought Williams in for his first appearance as a Bomber against his former team. He struggled, allowing a run and facing the tying run at the plate, but did secure the save. Now, the second member of the trade will toe the slab in the series.</p><h2><b>The Brewers need healthy years from Christian Yelich and Nestor Cortes</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Christian-Yelich-with-Milwaukee-Brewers.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Yelich told McCalvy he was grateful that Cortes didn’t dish out any wild windups in his first bullpen against him. It was one of the first times Yelich faced live pitching since July. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-rumors-how-christian-yelich-injury-will-impact-brewers-trade-deadline-strategy">left the Brewers’ game against the Cubs on July 23 and never returned</a>. After surgery, he is back in the lineup.</p><p>The Brewers still made the playoffs without Yelich last year but were bounced by the New York Mets. They lost Williams and shortstop Willy Adames from the roster and did not do much to replace them. But that has been the story of the Brewers in recent years, as they can replace talent with young prospects very well.</p><p>But without Adames and Williams, they have taken a step back on paper. In the same offseason, the Cubs made the biggest trade of the winter. Kyle Tucker is in a contract year and should dominate the division from the Windy City. After missing the final portion of the 2024 campaign, Yelich is hoping to bounce back in 2025. He <a href="https://x.com/AdamMcCalvy/status/1898496052417777756" rel="noopener">recently discussed the process</a> of proving to himself that he still has what it takes to find success at the big league level, via Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.</p><p>“It’s always good to have, you know, positive steps whether it’s a home run or a good at-bat,” Yelich said. “Or you felt like you were putting good swings on balls and be on time. That’s what you look for in spring training. Obviously you will always take the home runs. It’s cool to prove to yourself that it’s still in there.”</p><p>Yelich went on to explain how spring training provides him with an opportunity to find his comfortability at the plate once again. It seems to work as a reset button following the offseason.</p><p>The 33-year-old was once regarded as one of the best players in MLB. He made back-to-back All-Star teams in 2018 and 2019, winning the 2018 National League MVP Award and finishing second in NL MVP voting in 2019. He has dealt with injuries and underperformance in recent seasons, however. In 2024, the Brewers outfielder did earn his third career All-Star selection but was limited to 73 games after his season came to an early end following the aforementioned injury.</p><p>When healthy, what kind of player does Yelich believe he can be at this point in his career?</p><p>“I still think I can play at a pretty high level,” Yelich said. “I feel like I was playing at a pretty high level last year up until I got hurt. Which was unfortunate… That’s how it goes sometimes. I still think I can do it at a high level. However, the team lost star left fielder Christian Yelich to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-christian-yelich-dealt-brutal-injury-update-amid-back-concern" rel="noopener">season-ending back injury</a> in July. Ultimately, the Brewers fell to the New York Mets in the Wild Card round, dropping their sixth straight postseason series.</p><p>Yelich would miss 89 regular season games in 2024. The 13th-year veteran entered spring training hoping to be ready for the Brewers’ season opener in 2025. So far, the 33-year-old former league MVP is <a href="https://x.com/Todd_Rosiak/status/1895957366048436235" rel="noopener">on schedule</a>.</p><p>“I feel good. Just being out there’s a win. It’s a long road back from that kind of stuff. Dealing with the rehab process, I was just trying to get back out there. So I was happy with that. Just nice to be back in the game. Now he’s working his way into form, taking the field for the first time in over seven months.</p><p>“It was basically how I expected it to be and my body felt good. That was pretty much the biggest concern of the day… Physically I feel good and I think that’s the most important thing,” Yelich said.</p><p>“The procedure went good and the rehab process was relatively smooth… and all the baseball progressions have been pretty good, there haven’t been any setbacks or anything. This was kinda the date that was targeted for a while and there were no hiccups getting to today so it was good,” he added.</p><p>Yelich came to Brewers’ camp with the expectation of being <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-christian-yelich-expects-to-be-ready-for-opening-day" rel="noopener">ready for Opening Day</a>. So far, after testing out his surgically repaired back, he feels confident that he can hit the ground running.</p><p>While the Brewers should have Yelich back anchoring the lineup, switch-hitting center fielder Blake Perkins will miss some time with an injury. Milwaukee’s third-year outfielder <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/milwaukee-brewers/brewers-news-milwaukee-loses-blake-perkins-fractured-shin" rel="noopener">suffered a shin fracture</a> that will keep him sidelined for at least the first month of the 2025 season.</p><p>As for Yelich, he’s continuing to grind it out in spring training but he’s grateful to be back on the field. “Now it’s just repping it out really. It’s been a long time since I played. And it was just cool to be out there honestly because it’s a long road from the last time that I did it. Daniel has covered Auburn Athletics for the entirety of his time as a student, focusing on football, men's basketball, and baseball.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Milwaukee Brewers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Milwaukee Brewers received good news as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-christian-yelich-injury-update">star outfielder Christian Yelich could be</a> set to make a return from injury soon after only appearing in 73 games last season.</p><p>The Brewers could have Yelich <a href="https://x.com/AdamMcCalvy/status/1890796046399271219" rel="noopener">back in the lineup as soon</a> as the 2025 campaign gets under way, per Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.</p><p>Christian Yelich is in camp and says his rehab is on schedule. There’s no reason, he said, to think he won’t be ready for Opening Day,” McCalvy reported via Twitter/X on Saturday morning.</p><p>Yelich sustained a back injury that limited his availability throughout the 2024 season. He finished the year slashing .315/.406/.504 with 11 home runs, 42 RBI and an OPS of .909.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-christian-yelich-brandon-woodruff-spring-training-injury-updates">Yelich will hope to be consistently available</a> for the Brewers in 2025 as they look to win the National League Central Division once again.</p><p>The Brewers open spring training play against the Cincinnati Reds next Saturday. The star outfielder took to Instagram to honor Uecker.</p><p>“No words will really do you justice but I kind of think that’s how it should be,” Yelich said in the post, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “To say you were one of one is probably an understatement, the stories you could tell, the life you lived and the way you impacted people.</p><p>“I always cherished our time together and just being able to listen to you talk about your life and all you’d seen. I remember you saying that no matter how much time you have it still never feels like enough and that seems pretty true today. You’d always thank me for my friendship but the truth of it is the pleasure was all mine. He graduated from NYU in 2012 and still returns to serve as PA announcer and occasional broadcaster for the school’s basketball and volleyball teams.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Milwaukee Brewers</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>With all 30 Major League Baseball teams in offseason mode at the 2024 Winter Meetings, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-matt-arnold-makes-history-securing-major-award">Milwaukee Brewers general manager Matt Arnold</a> met with the media to provide updates on Christian Yelich and Brandon Woodruff.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-christian-yelich-out-for-year-back-surgery">Yelich last played</a> on July 23 before a back injury ended his season early. In 73 games, he hit .315 with 11 home runs and a .909 OPS. Arnold said that Yelich <a href="https://x.com/Todd_Rosiak/status/1866263091207352385" rel="noopener">isn’t yet swinging a bat</a>, but he is “doing other baseball movements and should hit the ground running early in Spring Training,” according to a post from Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.</p><p>“I think that was a big part of why he had the surgery sooner than later,” Arnold added. “He’s in a really good spot right now.”</p><p>Before his injury, Yelich seemed to be enjoying a career resurgence. His numbers weren’t exactly bad in the prior seasons, but the 32-year-old appeared to have fallen off from his 2018 National League MVP form. From 2018-19, Yelich hit .327, averaging 40 home runs with a 1.046 OPS. 2024 represented Yelich’s first All-Star selection since that stretch.</p><p>Yelich is in the midst of a nine-year, $215 million contract extension that he signed with the Brewers in 2020. He’s due to make $26 million in 2025.</p><h2><b>Brewers P Brandon Woodruff may not be ready for Opening Day</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Brandon-Woodruff.jpg"><figcaption>Rich Storry-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While Arnold seemed optimistic about Yelich, <a href="https://x.com/Todd_Rosiak/status/1866263897378046159" rel="noopener">he was less sure</a> about Woodruff, preaching caution as the team works to get him back on a mound for the first time since 2023.</p><p>“It’s hard to say at the moment [whether he will be in the rotation to open the season],” Arnold said. “I think certainly, we have expectations that he’ll be part of our rotation. We also want to be cautious with him and his health.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-brandon-woodruff-final-decision-on-pitching-in-2024-season">Woodruff underwent right shoulder surgery</a> shortly after the 2023 season ended. Expecting him to miss all of 2024, the Brewers non-tendered him, then re-signed him to a two-year deal worth $7.5 million, with a whopping $20 million mutual option for a third year, provided he can recapture his old form.</p><p>That old form is worth every bit of the $20 million the Brewers could pay him in 2026. In 11 starts in 2023, he pitched to a 2.28 ERA with a 0.821 WHIP. That’s hardly an anomaly from an injury-shortened season, either. The two-time All-Star had the best three-year stretch of his career from 2021-23, building a 2.84 ERA over 70 starts in that span.</p><p>Adding Woodruff back to the fold would strengthen a Brewers rotation that held its own in 2024 despite being short-handed. Part of that is because of rookie revelation Tobias Myers. Freddy Peralta was a consistent front-end presence as well. Both should return and combine with Woodruff to give the Brewers a formidable rotation.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
