They’ve become one of the best teams in MLB over the past few seasons, reaping the rewards of a painful rebuild that had them bring up the rear in the entire league for a few years, but they have declined big time this season. In fact, with only a little over a week to go before the trade deadline, the Orioles, coming off a 6-4 defeat to the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday, have a terrible 44-56 record, which has them 8.5 games out of a Wild Card spot with seven teams above them.</p><p>Simply put, the Orioles, after buying over the past few seasons, will more likely than not be sellers come the trade deadline. And this has the potential to cast a huge cloud on the locker room considering the uncertainty that they have to deal with at the moment. Nonetheless, first baseman Coby Mayo, despite being just 23 years old and in his first year as a big-leaguer, <a href="https://x.com/afkostka/status/1947841182484119974" rel="noopener">understands the reality</a> of the situation they’re in.</p><p>“I think everybody kind of knows the situation we’re in right now. I think there’s probably going to be some guys moved. But if you think about that too much, it’s going to take away your focus from tonight,” Mayo said, per Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner.</p><p>The Orioles do have a few veterans who could be of interest to contending teams at the deadline. And as sad as it may be, the Orioles’ terrible 2025 season means that they will have to part ways with a few of them while hoping to at least bring back some assets that will aid in their goal to return to contending ways next year.</p><h2><b>Who can the Orioles dangle at the trade deadline?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Orioles-Charlie-Morton-staring-on.jpg"><figcaption>Daniel Kucin Jr.-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-rumors-3-pitches-expected-traded">Orioles do have a few players in the final year</a> of their deal who could be low-cost rentals for contending teams. One such player is Zach Eflin. Eflin might be in the middle of a rough season, with a 5.95 ERA across 12 starts, but he’s about to come off the injured list, so perhaps he’d be fresh for the stretch run.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-rumors-the-pitcher-likely-traded-before-deadline">Someone like Charlie Morton</a> could at least be a useful innings-eater for a team in need of some pitching. Center fielder Cedric Mullins could also be a viable target, as he has considerable pop for someone playing an up-the-middle position. Ryan O’Hearn can provide some valuable power production as well.</p><p>Seranthony Dominguez is an experienced reliever who shouldn’t cost much to acquire from the Orioles as well.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

As a result, the club has already made the decision to call up top prospect Coby Mayo.</p><p>Reports indicate that Mayo, who is 23 years old, <a href="https://x.com/masnRoch/status/1928602494747242855" rel="noopener">was scratched from the lineup</a> at AAA Norfolk, per Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports. At first, it was speculation, but it was eventually confirmed that the Orioles are bringing Mayo back up to the majors.</p><p>“Coby Mayo was scratched from AAA Norfolk lineup. Just in case, it appears.”</p><p>“Mayo [is] on his way [to Baltimore].”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-baltimore-ryan-mountcastle-injury-white-sox">Ryan Mountcastle exited Friday’s game</a> after experiencing discomfort in his right hamstring. For now, he’s considered day-to-day. However, with the Orioles calling up Mayo, it could be a sign that the 28-year-old first baseman could miss some time. Mountcastle ended the game with two hits and a run scored through three at-bats.</p><p>As for Coby Mayo, he’s still trying to find his footing in the majors. This isn’t the first time he’s been called up, as the Orioles have given him a few looks in the lineup. However, he hasn’t been impressive so far, as Mayo owns a career .094 batting average and .186 OBP. He’s also only recorded five hits and zero home runs.</p><p>There is still hope, though, as the No. 17 overall ranked prospect on the MLB Top 100 prospects list has had just 53 career at-bats. Mayo just hasn’t had enough at-bats to be given a fair shake in MLB, as his time in the majors the past two seasons has been sporadic.</p><p>So, Mayo gets another shot with the Orioles while the club will conduct further evaluation on Mountcastle’s hamstring. The Orioles are also without third baseman Jordan Westburg, who was in the middle of his first All-Star campaign. Mayo, however, could be the best of the three when all is said and done. Even though he didn’t make the best first impression earlier this year (one hit in 17 at-bats with Baltimore), he has stayed hot in Norfolk and seems ready for this opportunity.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-news-brandon-hyde-hopeful-take-zach-eflin-joins-injury-club">As for Eflin,</a> the veteran came over in a deadline deal with the Tampa Bay Rays, another AL East rival. A win today coupled with a New York loss would put the Orioles just a half game behind the division leaders, and inhabitants of Camden Yards start a three-game series with the Chicago White Sox next. Adding both Eflin and Mayo to the roster, as well as catcher David Banuelos, will hopefully help Baltimore in their race to clinch a better postseason slot.</p><p>Last season, the Orioles were the number one overall seed after winning the division. Yet, they didn’t show up in the postseason, as the eventual world champion Texas Rangers beat them in the division series. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-orioles-rays-zach-eflin-trade">With additions like Eflin,</a> outfielder Eloy Jimenez and reliever Seranthony Dominguez at the deadline, plus a loaded farm system featuring Mayo and Banuelos, the O’s could make noise in October if they play up to their potential.</p><p>However, they need to avoid losing games like they did to the Colorado Rockies on Saturday. Championship teams win those types of matchups, routinely beating squads lower in the standings. A sweep of the White Sox, who are already eliminated from playoff contention, would help the Orioles establish more momentum in their hunt for October.
