First baseman Anthony Rizzo was a staple on the Cubs’ dominant teams in the 2010s. He was also an integral piece to Chicago’s championship run back in 2016. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-anthony-rizzo-retire-cub-become-ambassador">former New York Yankees slugger decided to retire from baseball</a>, but not before sharing the moment with a special group.</p><p>Throughout his career, Rizzo was always a fan favorite in both Chicago and New York. While his play on the field had a lot to do with it, the former All-Star was a big part of his community. When he was with the Cubs, Rizzo was a frequent visitor of Lurie Children’s Hospital, where he spent time with cancer patients. I love playing with them, and having them behind me. They make a lot of plays for me. So, just being able to go to work with them every day has been really fun. And, just seeing all their hardwork come to fruition has been really cool.”</p><p>While improving to 10-4 on the season, Horton led the Cubs to a 6-1 win against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday. Through 21 starts, Cade has a 2.70 ERA, 1.11 WHIP with 89 strikeouts in 110 innings pitched in 2025. Moisés Ballesteros recalled,” Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reported.</p><p>The Cubs had both Tucker and Crow-Armstrong starting in the All-Star Game in mid-July. If he misses the minimum amount of time, he would return against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tucker has a lot of eyes on him this season, as he will hit free agency when the World Series is over. Having a great September could get him an even bigger contract.</p><p>The Cubs will likely be in the three-game National League Wild Card series, which starts on Tuesday, September 30. While they would love to put together a stunning run at the division title, making sure both outfielders are ready for that day is important. Closer Daniel Palencia is heading to <a href="https://x.com/sahadevsharma/status/1965145908993282257" rel="noopener">the 15-day injured list</a> with a shoulder strain, per The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma.</p><p>The team inquired about <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-danny-palencia-injury-tests-9th-inning-meltdown-nationals">the 25-year-old righty’s status</a> shortly after his nightmarish outing against the Washington Nationals on Sunday night. Palencia entered the ninth inning with a 3-1 lead, before allowing two home runs, four hits and a walk without even recording an out. Chicago lost the series in Wrigley Field, and now it could lose much more.</p><p>Going into this save opportunity, the young Venezuelan owned a stellar 2.12 ERA through his first 51 appearances in 2025. That number ballooned to 3.00 after the shockingly abysmal showing. Fans were searching for an explanation, and perhaps they just got one. The North Side is anxiously awaiting more news on Palencia’s condition. Whenever a shoulder issue pops up in September, the chances of seeing that pitcher return to the mound before season’s end are often grim.</p><h2><b>Cubs need a lucky break</b></h2><p>Obviously, it is best not to speculate, but the fan base is surely prepared for every scenario. Danny Palencia was called on for the save. Instead, the right-hander allowed five runs without even recording an out, leading to the Cubs shockingly losing 6-3.</p><p>Fans won’t accept any kind of excuse for the ninth inning implosion. However, it now appears that Palencia <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1964797829999935676" rel="noopener">may have suffered an injury</a> in the process, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today.</p><p>“Cubs closer Danny Palencia, after giving up 5 runs in the 9th, is being tested for tightness in his posterior right shoulder,” Nightengale wrote.</p><p>While Palencia’s blow up paints a dark cloud over his name, losing him for a significant amount of time would be a major blow for the Cubs. Entering Sunday’s game, the closer held a 2.16 ERA and a 57/15 K/BB ratio alongside 22 saves. Ryan Pressly is the only other Chicago pitcher to record more than two saves in 2025, and he is now a free agent.</p><p>As a whole, the Cubs rank 12th in bullpen ERA with a 3.94 mark. Carson Kelly hit two homers, continuing an excellent season from behind the plate. But they were missing one of their key outfielders, which did not help in the loss. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-pete-crow-armstrong-on-injury-after-loss-nationals">Cubs were without Pete Crow-Armstrong</a> due to a knee injury, but X-rays <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/pete-crow-armstrong-right-knee-injury" rel="noopener">were negative.</a></p><p>“It’s new pain,” Crow-Armstrong said, per MLB.com’s Ryan Herrera. “There’s definitely [stuff] that’s hurt worse, but this hurts. And the legs are just funny. That’s kind of how I help the cause on a daily basis, is with my legs. It was a good stinger, for sure.”</p><p>Crow-Armstrong left Saturday’s game in the sixth inning after fouling a ball off his knee. It was poor timing, as Kyle Tucker missed the whole series with a lingering calf issue. Without both of their All-Star outfielders, the Cubs struggled against the lowly Nationals.</p><p>The Cubs are almost certainly going to the postseason, with a nine-game cushion ahead of the first team out, the Cincinnati Reds. Making sure both Crow-Armstrong and Tucker are healthy is the most important objective of September for Craig Counsell’s club. Losses like Sunday hurt, but getting to the postseason with both outfielders would erase that pain.</p><p>The Cubs hit the road for three games against the Atlanta Braves starting on Monday. They are running out of time to catch up to the Milwaukee Brewers at the top of the NL Central, but they could start a hot streak now. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/1-cubs-player-who-will-make-or-break-2025-playoff-chances">Crow-Armstrong’s offensive struggles in the second half have taken him out of NL MVP</a> consideration, but some time off his feet could help him reset.</p><p>The Nationals are playing out the string in their lost season. Their prediction where he’ll land? The Dodgers, who badly could use outfield help,” Nightengale wrote.</p><p>Across 133 games this season, Tucker has bashed 22 home runs, collected 73 RBIs, and posted an .854 OPS. While these marks are respectable, they are far different from what many predicted he would post during a contract season.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-kyle-tucker-out-series-finale-braves-nagging-calf-injury">Tucker has been dealing with calf tightness</a> and last played on September 2. Cubs manager Craig Counsell recently noted that it would <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/kyle-tucker-remains-out-of-lineup-vs-nationals" rel="noopener">not require</a> a trip to the injured list.</p><p>“That’s what we’re dealing with is we think we have time to let this heal without putting him on the injured list,” Counsell told MLB.com. “We think he’ll be ready before what an injured list [stint] would cost him. And we also, with having the extra player in September, feel like we’re not playing short, really. Don’t feel like, from a roster perspective, it hurts us at all.</p><p>“I think you put all those factors in, and we’re still going to be conservative with it. The Cubs rebounded from a series ending loss to the Atlanta Braves with an 11-5 win over the Nationals on Friday. Although they are down 2-1 in the seventh inning, there’s still time to clinch a win. Despite starting during that loss to Atlanta, rookie Cade Horton has still emerged as FanDuel’s <a href="https://sportsbook.fanduel.com/navigation/mlb?tab=awards" rel="noopener">betting favorite for</a> the National League Rookie of the Year.</p><p>Horton’s five-inning outing against the Braves was actually a strong one. The former top prospect <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/player/gamelog/_/id/4692526/cade-horton" rel="noopener">threw five shutout innings,</a> holding the Braves hitless and striking out six. He was one walk away from a perfect outing. However, fellow young gun Ben Brown cost Horton his tenth win of the season. So far, the former first-round pick is 9-4 with a 2.78 ERA in 103.2 innings. He could eclipse the 125-inning mark on the season.</p><p>Further down the FanDuel list is another Cub, this time third baseman Matt Shaw at +6000. The 23-year-old rebounded from a rough start and subsequent demotion to make it back to Wrigley Field. Now, it appears <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-matt-shaw-silver-lining">that Shaw has locked in</a> the hot corner. Although his .229 batting average doesn’t scream impactful, the rookie’s performance at the plate has stabilized since his early season ups and downs. Whether Horton, Shaw or another contender clinches the Rookie of the Year honor, the Cubs duo has a likely postseason berth ahead of them. Chances are the work that Hoyer and the front office have done in the draft helped the Cubbies’ head of baseball ops earn his recent extension.</p><p>Will Horton or Shaw capture this year’s NL Rookie of the Year title? Based on just how well Horton has done since he debuted, it would be a surprise if FanDuel’s odds aren’t correct. Counsell called today a “big day” in terms of testing the calf”</p><p>The call-up of Caissie provides the Cubs with valuable outfield depth as they navigate a critical stretch of the season. The top prospect was acquired in the 2020 trade that sent pitcher Yu Darvish to the San Diego Padres. Caissie, 23-years-old, posted a .278 batting average with 19 home runs last season in Triple-A and is widely regarded for his raw power, strong arm, and long-term potential. While his 29% strikeout rate remains a concern, his offensive upside makes him a strong fit in right field.</p><p>The Cubs slugger has appeared in 133 games this season, hitting .270 with 22 home runs, 73 RBIs, and an .854 OPS.
