Corey Seager, who has been dealing with a tight calf, was the designated hitter in the game. Of course, Seager is the Rangers everyday shortstop most of the time. Manager Bruce Bochy <a href="https://x.com/_abigaiiiil/status/1905393544132476949" rel="noopener">shut down any concern</a> over Seager’s calf injury after the game, via Abby Jones of DLLS Sports.</p><p>“Bruce Bochy shared that Corey Seager could’ve played shortstop today instead of just DHing. There is no concern with Seager at the moment,” Jones wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-corey-seager-2025-updates-2024-injury-woes">Rangers are hoping to have a healthy Corey Seager in 2025</a>. In 2024, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-corey-seager-gets-100-real-season-ending-injury">Seager was limited due to injury trouble</a>. It seems as if the infielder is alright, despite playing the role of DH as opposed to shortstop on Thursday.</p><p>Seager ultimately went 0-4 at the plate with two strikeouts. It was far from an ideal start to the season for the five-time All-Star, but the fact that he was in the lineup is a promising sign to say the least. When healthy, Seager is one of the best players in all of baseball.</p><p>He currently holds a career slash line of .290/.360/.511/.871. Seager made his MLB debut in 2015 with the Los Angeles Dodgers, but his official rookie season was not until 2016. Seager made the most of his first year in the big leagues, as he earned the National League Rookie of the Year Award.</p><p>Seager would play in Los Angeles until 2021, reaching two All-Star games and helping the Dodgers win a World Series along the way. He ended up joining the Rangers in 2022, though.</p><p>Since joining Texas, Seager has been selected to three consecutive All-Star games. He even finished second in American League MVP voting in 2023. Although he has been limited due to injuries at times, Seager has been quite consistent while on the field.</p><p>The Rangers will host the Red Sox once again on Friday night. After winning the 2023 World Series, Texas took the field last April to high expectations, but a spate of injuries helped derail their season, leading to a 78-84 finish.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-bruce-bochy-warning-2025-season">team can reset headed into 2025</a>, and it appears two critical pieces are ready to go. MLB.com released its <a href="https://x.com/MLB/status/1891675561614770398" rel="noopener">projected Opening Day lineup</a> for the Rangers on Monday and two names stick out in particular: <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-gets-brutally-honest-on-2025-season-after-past-injuries">starting pitcher Jacob deGrom</a> and shortstop Corey Seager.</p><p>Seager played most of 2024 but a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-corey-seager-gets-100-real-season-ending-injury">sports hernia ended his season</a> on September 4. In 123 games, he slashed .278/.353/.512 with 30 home runs and 4.5 fWAR. Injuries have followed Seager throughout his career, but so has October success. He has won two World Series and been named series MVP both times, once with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020 then with the Rangers two years ago.</p><p>The 30-year-old reported to spring training on time and faces no injury restrictions <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/other/corey-seager-says-he-will-be-ready-for-rangers-spring-training-after-2-hernia-operations-last-year/ar-AA1xpoSd" rel="noopener">as he ramps up</a> for the regular season.</p><p>“It’s a pretty normal offseason, which is nice. First time in a while,” Seager said last week, per NBC Sports. “It’s been good to kind of get in the gym and get in shape again and just kind of be ready.”</p><h2><b>Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom is over his recent injury woes</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Jacob-DeGrom.jpg"><figcaption>Tim Heitman-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>deGrom has started a grand total of 47 games in the last five seasons as he has faced several injuries and underwent a second Tommy John surgery in 2023.</p><p>He pitched his first bullpen of the spring last week and <a href="https://www.mlb.com/rangers/news/jacob-degrom-throws-first-bullpen-of-spring-training-2025" rel="noopener">all indications are</a> he came out of it fine.</p><p>“Everything was Jacob, so it was good to see him out there,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said, according to Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. “I think everybody was excited to see him, and I’m sure he was a little nervous even though he’s a veteran. But it was smooth sailing. All went well. It’s effortless for him, and to command it the way he does, it’s just a gift. That’s what elite pitchers do, is have the stuff and the command. It’s like a whip. It just comes through so easy. I’m amazed that some of these guys can do what they can do, and he’s one of them.”</p><p>deGrom returned from his rehab last September to make three starts before the end of the season and was effective in 10.2 innings pitched, striking out 14 and giving up only two earned runs. The veteran righty is hoping to build off that for a more-or-less complete season in 2025.</p><p>“We have to be smart with it,” he said. “We don’t want to jump to 200-and-something innings, but I’d like to be able to go out there and make 30 [starts]. That’s the goal. You sign here to pitch. I haven’t been able to do that. I was excited for the city, you know, not having the parade in 2020 (because of COVID). That city deserved that. So it was really to see it. It was awesome to kind of live through them. So it was a cool moment for them.</p><p>“(Walker Buehler) deserved that moment [striking out Alex Verdugo to close the World Series]. You know, that guy’s been through a lot. To come back and compete, that’s the guy you want on the mound. When we were playing together, that was the guy we always wanted on the mound.</p><p>“He’s a special person and the right guy for that spot. … He is absolutely made for October. If there’s a game you need to win, that’s the guy you want on the mound.”</p><p>The Dodgers drafted Seager with the No. 18 overall pick in the 2012 MLB draft. He made his major-league debut in 2015 at age 21 and became a full-time player in 2016, winning NL Rookie of the Year.</p><p>The Dodgers selected Buehler with the 24th overall pick in the 2015 MLB draft. After signing, he required Tommy John surgery. He debuted in the majors in 2017 and joined the rotation in 2018. He missed all of the 2023 season after requiring another Tommy John surgery and having his flexor tendon repaired in August 2022.</p><p>Buehler finally had his first start back from injury in May 2024, although it was short-lived, and he had to return to the injured list. He finished 2024 1-6 over 16 starts with a 5.38 ERA and 1.292 WHIP.</p><p>Buehler is currently a free agent and is in talks with the Dodgers about a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-dodgers-walker-buehler-in-talks-about-new-deal">potential return</a>, per New York Post’s Jon Heyman.</p><h2><b>Dodgers’ busy offseason just getting started</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Dodgers-Walker-Buehler-speaking-to-fans-at-World-Series-celebration.jpg"><figcaption>© Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Who are the Dodgers pursuing in free agency? The infielder says he’s not happy that his 2024 campaign came to an end so early, after suffering a hernia. He had a medical procedure to correct the issue.</p><p>“<a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/corey-seager-gives-update-after-hernia-surgery" rel="noopener">I feel good</a>, it’s good to be on the other end of [the surgery],” Seager said on Friday, per MLB.com. “Just to be able to have a healthy offseason is nice. I’m frustrated, obviously, that my season had to end early, but in general, it was probably the right thing to do, and just to be able to look forward to next year.”</p><p>The season officially ended for the shortstop on September 12. Seager finished the 2024 campaign with a .278 batting average, to go with 30 home runs and 74 RBIs.</p><p>“Personally, [my goal for the offseason] is just to get healthy,” Seager added. “I didn’t really have an offseason last year obviously, so to be able to just kind of get healthy and get your body back where you want to is something I’m really looking forward to.”</p><h2>The Rangers have had a disappointing season</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Rangers-Corey-Seager-tips-his-cap-to-Dodgers-fans.jpg"><figcaption>Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Seager is one of many Rangers who have dealt with injury issues this season. Almost the entire pitching staff <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-throw-bullpen-session-injury-recovery">was banged up</a> at some point, forcing the team to use several different relief pitchers throughout the year. The 2024 campaign was a disappointment for Texas, as the team is nearly guaranteed a losing season. Texas is 73-81 heading into Saturday’s games.</p><p>The shortstop has been struggling to stay healthy. He had two hernia surgeries in the last year, and he will need the offseason to heal from his latest procedure. It may be a bit of a long road to Seager feeling 100 percent once again.</p><p>“He’s starting to move around a little bit better; I’m walking faster than him right now,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said.</p><p>Rangers fans hope next season is much better for the team. Texas <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-mavs-legend-dirk-nowitzki-7-word-reaction-texas-world-series-win">won a World Series</a> in 2023, and fans thought the team may be on the road to build a dynasty. It hasn’t worked out that way; Texas has lost 7 of their last 10 games.</p><p>Seager has missed most of those contests. The shortstop’s last appearance was on September 2, in a game against the New York Yankees. He had two hits in that game, and posted four hits in his last two game appearances.</p><p>The Rangers take on the Seattle Mariners Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 Eastern. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rangers-news-corey-seager-sounds-off-on-incredible-world-series-mvp-win">World Series Most Valuable Player’s</a> early end finishes off a disappointing season for the defending champions. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reported the <a href="https://x.com/Evan_P_Grant/status/1834379261295428051" rel="noopener">end of his season</a> on social media Thursday.</p><p>The surgery, which Grant reports will take place on Friday, is on his right side. During the offseason, Seager <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/corey-seager-2024-offseason-surgery" rel="noopener">had the same surgery</a> on his left side. He had the procedure in January and was ready for opening day, so Rangers fans should not be concerned for 2025. Seager played through the injury in the playoffs and hit .318 in the 17 games while playing through the pain.</p><p>This season was an injury-filled disaster for the Rangers. Jacob deGrom just made his first start of the season, Max Scherzer was on and off the injured list, and Jon Gray has missed starts as well. Seager’s great season ends with a stint of his own on the injured list.</p><p>He backed up his second-place finish in the MVP race with another 30-homer season in 2024. Despite only playing 123 games this season, Seager knocked in 74 runs and hit 21 doubles this season. Max Scherzer is an unrestricted free agent and could be hanging up his cleats after the season. Jack Flaherty and Rocker represent two of the best pitching prospects in the game and should bring the Rangers back to the playoffs.</p><p>Bruce Bochy won his fourth World Series with the 2023 team, adding to his own Hall of Fame career. While he is a great manager, he does have the last two teams to miss the playoffs after winning the title on his resume.
