However, they did not make it past the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-blame-wild-card-series-sweep-royals-mlb-playoffs">visiting Kansas City Royals, who swept the O’s 2-0</a> in the Wild Card series. Once again, the inhabitants of Oriole Park at Camden Yards went home disappointed. Now the focus must move towards the 2025 season and beyond.</p><p>GM Mike Elias has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-news-brandon-hyde-2025-job-status-after-playoff-disaster-confirmed">built a strong core for manager Brandon Hyde</a> and his coaching staff, led by many young players such as infielders Jackson Holliday and Gunnar Henderson, as well as catcher Adley Rutschman and outfielder Colton Cowser. The farm system is loaded with talent as well, as there are more players waiting to play every day in the minors than spots that the Orioles have available.</p><p>One way to clear this logjam is to trade a couple of these young position players to acquire talent that fills other holes. The pitching staff needs upgrades if the team hopes to compete next October. Ace Corbin Burnes could leave in free agency, and it would open up another vacancy in the Baltimore starting rotation.</p><p>Closer Felix Bautista, meanwhile, should be back from Tommy John surgery at some point next season. Adding another bullpen arm or two to that group would be a wise choice for Elias and his staff. Lastly, another catcher to back up Rutschman and keep the seat warm for Samuel Basallo, another top prospect, should be on the shopping list.</p><p>So, who should Baltimore target first? Why not a potential ace that might replace Burnes? Spoiler alert: it might cost Baltimore a lot to pry him loose, but it’s a trade they should and can pull the trigger on. Maybe as soon as the upcoming winter meetings in December.</p><h2><b>Trading for Garrett Crochet will strengthen starting rotation</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/White-Sox-SP-Garrett-Crochet.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Orlando Ramirez-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Chicago White Sox are coming off the worst season in modern baseball history, going 41-121 in the 2024 campaign. It’s safe to say that the team is in full-blown rebuild mode, and they will likely look to continue to accumulate young players and prospects who will be a part of the next set of contending teams on the South Side of Chicago. One of the players that could be acquired: starting pitcher Garrett Crochet, who made an excellent return to the starting rotation this season.</p><p>Looking past <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/crochga01.shtml" rel="noopener">his 6-12 record</a> (he did pitch for the worst team in baseball, after all), Crochet was worthy of his All-Star selection this year. He has a 3.58 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 146 innings pitched, to go with 209 strikeouts. His WAR of 4.1 was also noteworthy, showcasing just how much he meant to the White Sox last season. Based on how well he performed, he likely would not be cheap in any deal. Furthermore, his age (25 years old) is another reason why they would likely prefer to keep him, as he could be a big part of that next set of contending teams in Chicago.</p><p>Trading multiple pieces from the stockpile of players in the minors would be the price for Crochet. Maybe players like third baseman Coby Mayo and outfielder Heston Kjerstad, or possibly a name like Basallo, could be traded. Or a young starting pitcher like Chayce McDermott. Elias and the Orioles brass have built an outstanding farm system. It’s one that should help them win trades like this one.</p><p>Would they pursue a top-tier arm like Crochet after doing so last offseason with Burnes? In order for the Orioles to capture another World Series trophy, it might take another big trade like that to help push them over the edge.</p><h2><b>Adding Gary Sanchez helps depth at catcher</b></h2><p>Veteran James McCann is a free agent, having spent the last couple of seasons behind Rutschman. The Orioles could use a veteran behind their franchise catcher, one that can provide some pop and passable defense. Even though Sanchez could be a free agent after this season, he has a mutual option with the Milwaukee Brewers that can be exercised. Chances are that option will be used, as Sanchez seems to like playing with the Brew Crew.</p><p>Yet, it seems like a move back to the AL East might be something that would intrigue him. Once upon a time, Sanchez was the future franchise catcher for the New York Yankees. He had a nickname, the “Kraken.” Then, struggles at the plate and behind the dish led to him being traded to the Minnesota Twins, and the rest is history. He’s bounced around a bit but has found his niche as a solid option at backup catcher who can also DH as well.</p><p>Sounds like someone for the Orioles. Whether it’s by trade or free agency, bringing Sanchez back for a second run in the AL East might be an option that Elias should consider for his club.</p><h2><b>Deal with Nationals could bring in multiple bullpen arms</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Orioles-GM-Mike-Elias.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>With Bautista making his way back from surgery, the Orioles should have their closer back at some point next season. However, they are poised to lose up to four members of their current bullpen. Seranthony Dominguez, who was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies at the trade deadline, would be one of those free agents. He finished the season as the closer, taking over from veteran Craig Kimbrel, who was released.</p><p>Danny Coulombe, Cionel Perez, and Burch Smith are the other relief arms that could leave the team. Top setup man Yennier Cano will be back, but adding to the pen is another key area that needs to be addressed. Swinging a trade with the Washington Nationals for one or two of their bullpen staff wouldn’t be a bad idea. Kyle Finnegan is definitely one name that Elias and his staff should inquire about. A veteran like Tanner Rainey would also be a nice addition to fill a middle relief position.</p><p>In order to succeed in October, a top-notch bullpen is incredibly important. Bautista should return next season as long as his rehab continues to go well. Cano will be back. Adding Finnegan to that duo would make the back end of the Baltimore bullpen very problematic for opposing teams. Rainey would also add a strikeout arm for the middle innings. Two pitchers that can come in and contribute for a while? Not a bad deal in the grand scheme of things.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Despite the speculation, clubhouse leadership will stay the same heading into 2025. Orioles general manager Mike Elias revealed that the six-year skipper <a href="https://x.com/masnRoch/status/1841873013764940096" rel="noopener">will return for next season</a>, according to Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports.</p><p>Considering this year should undeniably be perceived as a failure from the perspective of the O’s and their fan base, it is a bit surprising to see the organization press ahead with the same management structure. Baltimore’s troubling one-run performance across two American League Wild Card Series games is not black and white, since injuries did halt the club’s momentum during the second half of the season, but it is still tough to excuse more playoff underachievement.</p><h2><b>The Orioles are going the wrong way</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Orioles-Gunnar-Henderson-and-Adley-Rutschman.jpg"><figcaption>Tommy Gilligan-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Franchise pillars Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman, and really the entire lineup outside of veteran Cedric Mullins, could not solve the Royals’ pitching staff. People can tout KC’s deep starting rotation, but the Orioles were supposed to be equipped to handle all challenges the AL had to offer.</p><p>They did not, yet again. While much of the accountability should surely be placed on the players’ shoulders, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-news-brandon-hyde-brutally-honest-anger-ugly-royals-sweep">team is not taking the next step</a> under Brandon Hyde. The 2023 AL Manager of the Year did a notable job at guiding Baltimore through an arduous rebuild and helping a slew of youngsters assimilate to the big leagues, but postseason progress must follow.</p><p>There have been skippers like Buck Showalter who effectively lead a team through adversity and growing pains but cannot get over the October hump. Perhaps Hyde should be slotted in this category. Mike Elias and the Orioles brass clearly do not think so, however. They are trusting that he is in fact the right man to launch this group to the MLB’s apex.</p><p>This is not a decision the front office can afford to botch. Ideally, Hyde can make key adjustments and reward Baltimore’s faith in 2025. In order to do that, though, Elias and company might have to modify their approach as well. However, the past two seasons have borne little in the way of playoff success. In fact, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-news-corbin-burnes-gets-real-reason-behind-playoff-exit">Orioles have failed to win a playoff game</a> in five tries, with their latest postseason failure coming at the hands of the Kansas City Royals.</p><p>Make no mistake about it, the Orioles look poised for success in the coming years still despite being swept in two straight playoff series. They have plenty of young, up-and-coming talent in the pipeline, with many of those players already making waves for Baltimore’s major-league roster. But pundits believe that the Orioles have to be more proactive in building on their young core, as their wide-open World Series window is not something to take for granted, as it can <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5814242/2024/10/03/orioles-2024-wild-card-loss-front-office/?source=emp_shared_article" rel="noopener">slam shut in an instant</a>.</p><p>“Never has an offseason felt more critical. Never has there been a time to aggressively chase upgrades and not waste another year of a young, controllable, cheap core. Windows change. Injuries happen; players age. The Orioles don’t even have to leave the division for proof of how quickly things can turn sour. Just look at the Toronto Blue Jays,” Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic wrote.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/royals-news-kansas-city-drops-mic-savage-trolling-orioles-sweep">Orioles clearly have the talent</a>, but they have wilted under the pressure in two consecutive postseasons now. Instead, a long and difficult offseason awaits as the pressure to capitalize on this golden age of talented youngsters mounts on the franchise.</p><h2>Orioles may have to consolidate talent this offseason</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Orioles-celebrating.jpg"></figure><p>The Orioles remain in an enviable position heading into next year despite getting swept for the second consecutive year; they have Jackson Holliday waiting in the wings, as despite enduring a rough cup of coffee in the big leagues, his track record of success in the minors suggests that he’ll be a much better player in his age-21 season.</p><p>The same goes for Coby Mayo; despite struggling in his brief stint in the majors, he will be coming in to make a crowded Orioles infield picture even more congested. But perhaps this opens up the opportunity for the Orioles to trade one of their blue-chip prospects to acquire a long-term replacement for Corbin Burnes.</p><p>Burnes was the Orioles’ major 2024 offseason acquisition, and he was as good as advertised, but he will be entering free agency and will be costing the team a pretty penny. It’s not quite clear just how willing the Orioles front office is to splash the cash, but there’s no better time for them to do so than the present especially considering how important Burnes was to the team this past season.</p><p>But at the end of the day, the Orioles’ stars simply have to be better. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/royals-bobby-witt-jr-makes-guarantee-after-sweeping-orioles">Royals bewildered Baltimore’s hitters</a> in the two Wild Card games they played, with Colton Cowser and Gunnar Henderson swinging at the air more often than not. The Orioles were swept in the MLB American League Wild Card series and Corbin Burnes <a href="https://x.com/ByMattWeyrich/status/1841651106411102225" rel="noopener">did not hold back</a> after the playoff exit.</p><p>“Yeah, the talent on this team is unbelievable,” Burnes began (h/t Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun).</p><p>“Obviously, we had first-rounders across the board, which is special knowing that these are some of the best players in the game, and they were recognized that when they were drafted, and a lot of those guys had really good years.”</p><p>“You’ve possibly got the Rookie of the Year, a guy that is going to get some MVP votes, one of the best catchers in the league, and that’s not counting a lot of guys that contribute a lot to this team,” added Burnes. “So, the depth of the young guys that they have here made this team special and made it such an exciting team. Unfortunately, we just ran out of gas.”</p><p>Burnes was sensational in pitching into the ninth inning of Game 1’s pivotal showdown with the Royals. Baltimore’s bats never <a href="https://twitter.com/bobbybaltim0re/status/1841240596507422834" rel="noopener">made it out of the hotel</a> though. Ahead of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-vs-royals-prediction-odds-pick-how-to-watch-4-21-2024">Orioles-Royals game</a>, we’ll be making our Orioles Wild Card predictions.</p><p>The Orioles are a baseball purist’s dream, as most of their core players are homegrown. Baltimore has the league’s <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/farm-system-rankings-2024-in-season" rel="noopener">third-best farm system</a> as of August 15th, via MLB.com. It shows on the field, as the club finished third in the AL led by stars like Gunnar Henderson, Adley Rutschman, and Anthony Santander, all of whom were drafted by the organization. Most of the team’s position players are career-long Orioles, with supporting pieces like Ryan Mountcastle, Jordan Westburg, and Colton Cowser rounding out the squad. Of course, that’s not to mention MLB top prospect Jackson Holliday getting his first taste of playoff action.</p><p>While the Royals aren’t quite as deep, they’re also led by homegrown talent. Third-year shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. sits at the top of the food chain after a breakout season after winning the 2024 AL batting title with a .332 average. The 24-year-old also led the team with 32 homers, 109 RBI, 57 walks, a .977 OPS, and a 9.4 WAR. Only New York Yankees superstar Aaron Judge bested Witt with a 10.8 WAR.</p><p>Salvador Perez, Maikel Garcia, and Vinnie Pasquantino are all dangerous as well. Perez mashed 27 homers and 104 RBI, while Garcia led the squad with 37 stolen bases.</p><p>Tuesday’s Game 1 also features a battle of aces on the mound, with southpaw Cole Ragans toeing the slab for the Royals against right-hander Corbin Burnes for the Orioles. Ragans ranked fifth in the MLB with 223 strikeouts and 12th with a 3.14 ERA in 32 appearances this season. Meanwhile, Burnes ranked seventh with a 2.92 ERA and tied for the third-most wins with 15, also in 32 outings.</p><p>If Kansas City can upset Baltimore on the road to start the best-of-three series, it’ll be halfway to its first ALDS appearance since 2015. The 29-year-old also notched two consecutive seven-inning outings against the Detroit Tigers before holding the Yankees to one run over five innings in the Bronx to end his regular season. While the postseason is a different animal, Corbin’s been good in October as well, posting a 1-1 record with a 2.84 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in eight outings for the Milwaukee Brewers across 2018, ’21, and ’23.</p><h2><b>Vinnie Pasquantino will struggle against the Orioles</b></h2><p>Pasquantino returns to Kansas City’s lineup on Tuesday for the first time since breaking his right thumb on August 29. However, the first baseman is <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/41549817/vinnie-pasquantino-returns-royals-roster-al-wild-card-series" rel="noopener">relegated to the designated hitter role</a>, as manager Matt Quatraro said that he’s not yet ready to play the field, via ESPN.</p><p>Pasquantino enjoyed a productive season before going down, slashing .262/.315/.446 with 19 homers and 97 RBI in 131 games. However, the 26-year-old has no playoff experience, and it’s difficult for anybody to perform well in that setting when recovering from an injury, let alone someone who’s never been there before.</p><p>If Pasquantino struggles at the plate early on, expect Quatraro to sub him out for a pinch-hitter.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The White Sox procrastinated the inevitable with a mini-winning streak at the end of their season, but they officially set the record for the most losses in a season in the modern era, which dates back to 1901. The team finished the 2024 season with a 41-121 record.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/white-sox-news-tommy-pham-quote-highlights-embarrassing-fact-about-chicago">White Sox embarrassed their fanbase</a> all season long. Chicago wasn’t the only team in the modern era to put up a jaw-droppingly bad record, though.</p><p>In this article, we are going to look at the 10 MLB teams with the most losses in a single season in MLB history since 1901. We had to go back over a century to find teams whose records compared to Chicago’s this year, but no one during that time ever had more losses than the White Sox did in 2024.</p><h2><b>1. 2024 Chicago White Sox (41-121)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Luis-Robert-and-Andrew-Benintendi.jpeg"><figcaption>Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The White Sox finished their season out strong, winning five of their last six games. It prevented them from finishing with a record much worse than the second-worst team ever, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the title.</p><p>It was not long ago that the White Sox were looked at as one of the rising teams in the MLB. Their talent couldn’t stay healthy, though, and Chicago was forced to embrace a full blown rebuild. That rebuild saw the departures of a number of big names through the trade market. Notably, Eloy Jimenez, Dylan Cease, Erick Fedde, Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo Lopez, Lance Lynn, Joe Kelly, Jake Burger, and many more were traded over the last year or so.</p><p>Because of that, a lot of losses were expected coming into the year, but no one could have guessed the White Sox would drop 121 games. Players such as Luis Robert and Garrett Crochet are considered some of the best players in baseball, yet the White Sox couldn’t score more runs than opposing teams all season.</p><p>Their 121-loss season goes down in the record books, and it could take decades until it is ever broken. There isn’t a lot of hope for the future, either. While the White Sox shouldn’t lose this many games next year, it is possible their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-phillies-linked-garrett-crochet-trade-white-sox-contract-comments">fire sale continues</a> and their roster outlook is even more bleak next season.</p><h2><b>2. 1962 New York Mets (40-120)</b></h2><p>Being an expansion team in MLB is never easy. Expansion teams often don’t have the talent on their roster to compete with the rest of the league, and that was evident in the Mets’ first season. Prior to the White Sox’s 2024 failure, the Mets held the record for the most losses in the modern era in their very first season.</p><p>The rotation was the Mets’ biggest problem area. New York’s starting pitchers combined for only 23 wins all season long. Pitching was far from the Mets’ only issue, though. Not only was their ERA the worst in baseball, but so was their batting average and their fielding percentage, meaning the Mets were pathetic at all aspects of baseball in 1962.</p><p>New York would continue to struggle over the coming years. They won 51, 53, and 50 games in the next three seasons, respectively. The team did eventually break out and win the World Series in 1969, though, but they’ve largely struggled for the most part ever since the poor start to their franchise’s existence.</p><h2><b>3. 2003 Detroit Tigers (43-119)</b></h2><p>After there being no 115-plus loss seasons in MLB since the ’60s, the 2003 Tigers went out and lost 119 games. That stood as the most losses in American League history until the 2024 White Sox dropped 121 games. Detroit had a -337 run differential over the course of the season.</p><p>The team’s batting average was only .240, and they were equally as bad throwing the baseball, as the team’s ERA was 5.30. The team started out the season with a 1-17 record. By winning five of their last six games, the Tigers actually saved themselves from ranking even worse on this list. Despite the disastrous campaign, the Tigers would bounce back and make the World Series only three years later.</p><h2><b>4. 1916 Philadelphia Athletics (36-117)</b></h2><p>While they only have the fourth-most losses in MLB history, the Philadelphia Athletics actually hold the record for worst winning percentage ever (since 1901). In 1916, they finished the year with a winning percentage of .235, meaning this season was arguably even worse than the White Sox’s most recent campaign.</p><p>Amazingly, this horrendous season occurred only three years after the Athletics had won their third championship in a four year span. They even made the World Series as recently as 1914. The sudden collapse of a true dynasty was due to the team being forced to let their best players go, either via trade or release. Winning led to the team being unable to pay all of their star talent, so they focused their eyes on the future.</p><p>Even after the frustrating year, manager Connie Mack’s job was never in doubt. Mack ended up managing the team until 1951, and he even won two more World Series.</p><h2><b>5. 1935 Boston Braves (38-115)</b></h2><p>Babe Ruth is known for his winning ways, but when he was the vice president and assistant manager of the Boston Braves in 1935, his team didn’t do a lot of winning. Ruth is one of the first examples in sports of a legendary player not finding the same levels of success as a coach/front office member.</p><p>Ruth was also a player on this team. At age 40, Ruth played his first season outside of the Boston Red Sox/New York Yankees organizations, but he was a shell of his former self. Ruth was so bad that some of his teammates threatened to go on strike if he was in the team’s lineup. Ruth did muster up a three home run game in one of his last few games, but he retired early into the season. Even without him, the Braves still struggled.</p><p>Ben Cantwell became the last pitcher in the 21st century to lose at least 25 games in a season, and the Braves ended the year with 115 losses.</p><h2><b>6. 2018 Baltimore Orioles (47-115)</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Chris-Davis.jpeg"><figcaption>Jonathan Dyer-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>There is hope for the White Sox because years of lots of losing by the Baltimore Orioles not so long ago led to them orchestrating an incredible rebuild. Now, Baltimore is one of the best teams in baseball. Back in 2018, they were really bad. Before acquiring a talented young roster and building an exciting farm system, the Orioles had to lose in order to get such high draft picks and prestigious prospects.</p><p>The worst of their losing came in 2018 when the team dropped 115 games. They were 60 games behind their division rival Boston Red Sox, which was the biggest games back deficit since 1935. The team couldn’t find success against anybody, as they had a losing record against every single American League team.</p><p>Until the White Sox surpassed them this year, the Orioles held the record for quickest time being eliminated from playoff contention in the divisional era (since 1969). Chris Davis was the headliner of their struggles. His home run prowess resulted in a seven-year, $161 million deal, but the power hitter saw major regression after putting pen to paper. In what was just his third year under the new deal, Davis batted .168 and had a -2.7 WAR. It was the worst WAR by any player since the 2011 season.</p><p>The Orioles’ disastrous season was necessary in pushing the team in a different direction. Tanking isn’t as common in MLB as it is in the NBA, but this was the closest we’ve seen to it in recent memory in baseball. It worked out for Baltimore, too. The Orioles have had <a href="https://www.masnsports.com/blog/an-oriole-three-peat-three-years-three-different-no-1-ranked-prospects" rel="noopener">three different prospects</a> be ranked as the number one prospect in baseball since this season, and they should now contend for World Series titles for the next decade or so.</p><h2><b>7. 2019 Detroit Tigers (47-114)</b></h2><p>A year after the Orioles had a disastrous season, the Tigers had one nearly as bad. Detroit also only won 47 games, but they had one fewer loss than Baltimore did the year prior. This is because the Tigers only played 161 games, as a late-season rainout was never rescheduled due to the Tigers and their opponent, the White Sox, missing the playoffs.</p><p>If it wasn’t for that rainout, the Tigers could have tied the Orioles’ record from the year prior. Detroit’s season actually started off well. They won seven of their first 11 games before losing 111 of 151 to follow. Detroit particularly struggled at home. Their 59 home losses were tied for the most in the modern era.</p><p>Like the Orioles, the Tigers’ poor play led to some good draft picks, and now they are back in the playoffs. The 2024 postseason will be the Tigers’ first time playing after the regular season since 2014.</p><p>The Tigers’ horrendous 2019 season makes them the only team to appear twice on this list of the 10 worst seasons in MLB history. Additionally, with three of the worst 10 teams ever being within the last decade, the likelihood of teams being historically bad is proving to be higher than ever before. The way rosters are constructed and the way the game is played these days has contributed to that.</p><h2><b>8. 1904 Washington Senators (38-113)</b></h2><p>While there have been some new school teams who have struggled mightily, the Washington Senators team from 1904 is the oldest team to qualify as one of the worst in the modern era, as their 38-113 season was just a few years after the modern era began.</p><p>The Senators’ season was doomed to fail from the start, as they started off 0-13-1 before collecting their first win. The Boston Americans gave Washington the most problems, as the Senators went 2-20 against that team in 1904.</p><p>The Senators’ season was so disappointing that the biggest crowd after the team’s Opening Day game was <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/05/01/worst-washington-baseball-team-ever/" rel="noopener">against an amateur team</a>, as many showed up in belief that the amateurs would beat the professionals. That didn’t end up being the case, as the Senators proved that there are levels to sports with a 17-0 win.</p><h2><b>9. 1952 Pittsburgh Pirates (42-112)</b></h2><p>Prior to the modern era, high-loss seasons were relatively common. The Pittsburgh baseball team that went by the nickname the Alleghenys in 1890 lost 113 games, but that season doesn’t count for this list, as we are only looking at teams from 1901 and onward. Still, the 1952 baseball season in Pittsburgh was pretty bad, too.</p><p>The Pirates went 42-112 that year. Their struggles were largely predictable, as the team was filled with young and inexperienced players. Thirteen rookies made the Opening Day roster, four of which were teenagers. The team won two games in a row at the start of the year, but they then lost 16 of 17 and never had a winning streak greater than two again.</p><p>This youth movement was coined “Operation Peach Fuzz.” Seven of the eight youngest players in the National League were on the Pirates’ roster, and it led to a lot of growing pains.</p><h2><b>10. 1939 St. Louis Browns (43-111)</b></h2><p>Pitching was the detriment of the 1939 St. Louis Browns. The team had an ERA of 6.01, and another team wouldn’t have an ERA over 6.0 again until 1996. The Browns also walked 739 batters, which was over 100 more than the next worst pitching team in baseball.</p><p>Each of the nine pitchers with the most innings on the team had ERAs above 5.0. The team actually didn’t have a horrible year with the bats. George McQuinn, for example, batted .316 with 20 homers. It wasn’t enough to overcome the pitching woes that plagued the team in both the starting rotation and the bullpen, though, and St. Louis ended up with 111 losses.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Still, expect this bullpen to get some work if the Twins begin to get to Povich early.</p><h2><b>Why The Twins Will Cover The Spread/Win</b></h2><p>The Minnesota Twins are currently three games back of the Kansas City Royals for the final American League Wild Card spot, so they’ll need a sweep during this series to gives themselves a chance at making the Postseason. They haven’t done themselves any favors by going 3-7 over their last 10 games and they’ll have an even tougher road as they try to notch their first wins against Baltimore on the season. They’ve been outscored by the Orioles by 13 runs in three previous meetings and they’ll certainly need to get off to a hot start in this one if they want to keep up with the bats of Baltimore.</p><p>The Twins will send Pablo Lopez to the mound for his thirty-second start of the season. He’s been one of their more reliable pitchers all season and after winning four consecutive appearances, the Orioles have lost the last two games he’s started in. His last time out, he earned seven runs through just four innings of work and didn’t see the start he was hoping for. His numbers are slightly better at home than they are on the road, but he’ll need to be perfect during this one if the Twins want any hope of making the Postseason. The Orioles own this rivalry at 3-0 on the season and they can effectively end Minnesota’s season with just one win during this series. The Minnesota Twins have to sweep in order to have a chance at the final AL Wild Card spot and they’ll come into this first game very determined to start off on the right foot.</p><p>We have to give the slight pitching advantage to the Twins due to Pablo Lopez’ winning record at home.
