The two-time Gold Glove winner made a diving play on a Rafael Devers ground ball in the seventh inning, throwing out the star slugger <a href="https://x.com/WatchMarquee/status/1960551678664454383" rel="noopener">from a seated position</a>, via Marquee Sports Network.</p><p>The Atlanta Braves obviously hoped Swanson would evolve into a more consistent hitter when they selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, but they also understood that the Kennesaw, Georgia native’s elite defense would raise his floor to a comfortable level. Swanson has seven defensive runs saved and two outs above average this season, per FanGraphs, forming one of the great fielding duos in baseball alongside second baseman and fellow Gold Glover Nico Hoerner. The two-time All-Star’s ability to make fantastic plays like the one he pulled off against the Giants could be crucial in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/1-cubs-player-who-will-make-or-break-2025-playoff-chances">the MLB playoffs</a>.</p><p>Fundamental soundness is magnified in October. When there is less room for error, dependable defense shines brightly. However, the Cubs will also ask Dansby Swanson to come through at the dish when necessary. Although he has hit a respectable 18 home runs through 129 games — closing in on fourth season with 20 or more dingers — his overall offensive numbers leave something to be desired.</p><p>After going 1-for-3 with a walk in Oracle Park, Swanson is now batting .246 with a .297 on-base percentage, .405 slugging percentage and .701 OPS. If he can give a little more with his bat, then this squad should pose great danger to the rest of the National League this postseason. First and foremost, though, Chicago (76-56) trusts him to spark momentum with his glove.</p><p>Swanson’s next gem will ideally come in a Cubbies victory. At the moment, that would be the San Diego Padres. For as good as Chicago has been so far this season, there are still areas where the team can improve. Most notably on the mound, as the loss of Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga to injuries, among others, have really stung manager Craig Counsell’s team.</p><p>However, the offense has picked up the slack. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cubs-news-bet-pete-crow-armstrong-cashed-another-hr-brewers">Crow-Armstrong, also known as PCA,</a> drove in six of the team’s runs, including a grand slam that was his second bomb of the night. Suzuki also hit a three-run homer, while designated hitter Kyle Tucker drove in two runs of his own. Four hitters combined to drive in all 16 runs. Almost every single Cubs starter got at least one hit. As long as the offense continues this strong start, then maybe it will buy time for a pitching staff that could use a boost. Hopefully president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer is glued to his phone, trying to improve this team. With Brad Keller serving as the opener, Horton entered in the second inning — and immediately made his presence known, striking out Brandon Nimmo on a 96 mph heater for his first career punchout.</p><p>The 23-year-old right-hander went four innings, allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks. He flashed his full arsenal, collecting whiffs on a curveball, slider, changeup, and fastball. Horton’s only blemish was a hanging slider that Brett Baty crushed for a three-run homer in the fourth.</p><p>Still, the debut was a success.</p><h2><b>Cubs defeat the Mets on Saturday in Cade Horton’s MLB Debut</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Cade-Horton-cover.jpg"><figcaption>Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>“Tonight was special,” Swanson said. “We’ve been excited about Cade for a while. For him to go out and compete like that — you can see the talent.”</p><p>Horton wasn’t alone in making headlines. Swanson’s home run was his first since he and his wife, U.S. soccer star Mallory Swanson, announced they’re expecting their first child. He also played a key role in helping stabilize a Cubs team that had dropped three straight heading into Saturday.</p><p>Cubs manager Craig Counsell leaned on the bullpen to carry the team after Horton exited. Drew Pomeranz, Daniel Palencia, Julian Merryweather, and Porter Hodge combined to hold off a late Mets rally. Hodge closed out the ninth, escaping a leadoff walk with a game-ending groundout from Juan Soto.</p><p>Offensively, Chicago saw continued contributions from Pete Crow-Armstrong, who led off in Ian Happ’s absence. Crow-Armstrong singled, stole his 13th base of the season, and scored the game’s first run. He also added to his defensive highlight reel with a spectacular running catch to rob Soto in the first inning.</p><p>The Cubs, now 23-17, will look to build on the momentum Sunday morning in the series finale. With Horton’s electric debut and a refreshed Swanson leading the charge, the vibes in the clubhouse are high — and the rookie right-hander might have just earned himself more than a spot start.</p><p>“It’s what you dream about,” Horton said postgame. “I’m just grateful to be out here with these guys. We’ve got a great team and we’re having a lot of fun right now.”</p><p>Swanson goes on to credit the addition of Kyle Tucker with helping lengthen their lineup. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-news-cubs-astros-both-earn-praise-for-kyle-tucker-trade">Tucker came to the Cubs in a trade with the Astros</a> this offseason and has just one year left on his contract. As his free agency looms, the pressure heightens on the team on the field and in the front office.</p><p>Things got off to a tough start for the Cubs, losing two games to the Dodgers in the Tokyo Series in mid-March. They have been excellent since, and could make a magical run.</p><h2><b>The Cubs are rolling through April</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Craig-Counsell-and-Kyle-Tucker.jpg"><figcaption>Matt Marton-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Cubs have had a stretch where they won seven of eight games and another where they’ve won seven of ten. While there are some concerning losses sprinkled in there, they are off to a great start. April is about banking wins, and Swanson’s Cubbies have done that perfectly.</p><p>The only concern for the Cubs so far is their pitching. They lost starter Justin Steele for the season with an elbow injury, thinning out their rotation. They are 21st in runs allowed so far, but their offense has stepped up to mitigate that problem. When their offense gets cold, their pitching will have to step up.</p><p>The Cubs are having fun, but that fun could end quickly if Kyle Tucker leaves in the offseason. This is the best team, on paper, since the 2016 championship squad. They must pay that off with a great regular season and a triumphant return to the playoffs. If they keep up this start, that should be no problem.</p><p>The Cubs have swept the Dodgers and are moving on to the Phillies.
