It was the shortstop’s lone hit of the night, but he made it count. He also reached base with a walk on a 1-for-4 line. The win helped increase the Cubs’ lead in the NL Central to three games over the St. Louis Cardinals. Is this win the start of a possible sweep of the Reds at Great American Ballpark? At the moment, that would be the San Diego Padres. For as good as Chicago has been so far this season, there are still areas where the team can improve. Most notably on the mound, as the loss of Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga to injuries, among others, have really stung manager Craig Counsell’s team.</p><p>However, the offense has picked up the slack. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cubs-news-bet-pete-crow-armstrong-cashed-another-hr-brewers">Crow-Armstrong, also known as PCA,</a> drove in six of the team’s runs, including a grand slam that was his second bomb of the night. Suzuki also hit a three-run homer, while designated hitter Kyle Tucker drove in two runs of his own. Four hitters combined to drive in all 16 runs. Almost every single Cubs starter got at least one hit. As long as the offense continues this strong start, then maybe it will buy time for a pitching staff that could use a boost. Hopefully president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer is glued to his phone, trying to improve this team. Dansby Swanson left his mark on Saturday’s game with a solo home run off of Sean Burke. He and the rest of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-pete-crow-armstrong-keeps-it-real-chicago-2025-success">Cubs rallied around Kyle Tucker and have put together one of the best offenses</a> in the league this season.</p><p>His 433ft. bomb was his tenth homer of the season, and the fans at Wrigley Field cheered for him as he rounded the bases. Chicago has been at the top of the NL Central for the majority of the season. It is a breath of fresh air for the Cubs, who have struggled for the last four seasons. Now, Swanson and Co. have the team in line to have a their say on the NL playoff picture.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-news-dansby-swanson-doubles-down-craig-counsell-fun-latest-win">Chicago veteran has said that the team is more “fun” this season</a>. The Cubs are proving themselves as a top team on the back of their talent at the plate. Tucker’s addition re-energized the team, but they have gotten contributions across the roster. All of them had their moments at the beginning of their weekend series against the White Sox.</p><p>For a team eyeing a return to the postseason, Chicago has had an eventful season. Cubs pitcher Justin Steele is out for the season, forcing Shota Imanaga into the ace role on the team. The team is one of many attached to a potential Nolan Arenado trade.</p><p>For now, though, their fans want them to win the battle of Chicago this weekend and start another winning streak. With Brad Keller serving as the opener, Horton entered in the second inning — and immediately made his presence known, striking out Brandon Nimmo on a 96 mph heater for his first career punchout.</p><p>The 23-year-old right-hander went four innings, allowing three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks. He flashed his full arsenal, collecting whiffs on a curveball, slider, changeup, and fastball. Horton’s only blemish was a hanging slider that Brett Baty crushed for a three-run homer in the fourth.</p><p>Still, the debut was a success.</p><h2><b>Cubs defeat the Mets on Saturday in Cade Horton’s MLB Debut</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Cade-Horton-cover.jpg"><figcaption>Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>“Tonight was special,” Swanson said. “We’ve been excited about Cade for a while. For him to go out and compete like that — you can see the talent.”</p><p>Horton wasn’t alone in making headlines. Swanson’s home run was his first since he and his wife, U.S. soccer star Mallory Swanson, announced they’re expecting their first child. He also played a key role in helping stabilize a Cubs team that had dropped three straight heading into Saturday.</p><p>Cubs manager Craig Counsell leaned on the bullpen to carry the team after Horton exited. Drew Pomeranz, Daniel Palencia, Julian Merryweather, and Porter Hodge combined to hold off a late Mets rally. Hodge closed out the ninth, escaping a leadoff walk with a game-ending groundout from Juan Soto.</p><p>Offensively, Chicago saw continued contributions from Pete Crow-Armstrong, who led off in Ian Happ’s absence. Crow-Armstrong singled, stole his 13th base of the season, and scored the game’s first run. He also added to his defensive highlight reel with a spectacular running catch to rob Soto in the first inning.</p><p>The Cubs, now 23-17, will look to build on the momentum Sunday morning in the series finale. Things have been going well at the Friendly Confines as they kick off a season with massive expectations. As his free agency looms, the pressure heightens on the team on the field and in the front office.</p><p>Things got off to a tough start for the Cubs, losing two games to the Dodgers in the Tokyo Series in mid-March. They have been excellent since, and could make a magical run.</p><h2><b>The Cubs are rolling through April</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Craig-Counsell-and-Kyle-Tucker.jpg"><figcaption>Matt Marton-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Cubs have had a stretch where they won seven of eight games and another where they’ve won seven of ten. While there are some concerning losses sprinkled in there, they are off to a great start. April is about banking wins, and Swanson’s Cubbies have done that perfectly.</p><p>The only concern for the Cubs so far is their pitching. They lost starter Justin Steele for the season with an elbow injury, thinning out their rotation. They are 21st in runs allowed so far, but their offense has stepped up to mitigate that problem. When their offense gets cold, their pitching will have to step up.</p><p>The Cubs are having fun, but that fun could end quickly if Kyle Tucker leaves in the offseason. This is the best team, on paper, since the 2016 championship squad. They must pay that off with a great regular season and a triumphant return to the playoffs. If they keep up this start, that should be no problem.</p><p>The Cubs have swept the Dodgers and are moving on to the Phillies. He graduated from NYU in 2012 and still returns to serve as PA announcer and occasional broadcaster for the school’s basketball and volleyball teams.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>In two Major League seasons, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-anthony-volpe-player-mlb-history-world-series-feat">New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe</a> has given fans plenty of reason to hope he could be the team’s long-term solution at the position once manned by Derek Jeter.</p><p>Volpe raised his batting average by 34 points between his rookie and sophomore campaigns (though the starting point was a paltry .209). He also won a Gold Glove in his first year and cut down on his strikeout rate in his second. Then, of course, there was the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-anthony-volpe-world-series-game-4-grand-slam">World Series grand slam</a> that kept the Yankees’ championship hopes alive for one more night in October.</p><p>On the other hand, Volpe’s overall power numbers dropped from year one to year two. He hit 21 home runs as a rookie compared to 12 in 2024 while his hard-hit rate decreased and his ground-ball rate increased. The reason, as Chris Kirschner of The Athletic explained in a piece on Monday, is that Volpe <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6072615/2025/01/20/yankees-anthony-volpe-dansby-swanson-similarities/" rel="noopener">prioritized contact</a> and putting the ball in play in 2024.</p><p>“Volpe sacrificed most of his slugging potential to put the ball in play, and not all contact is created equal,” he wrote. “His OPS dropped slightly from .666 in 2023 to .657 in 2024.”</p><p>Kirschner compared him to Dansby Swanson, now of the Chicago Cubs. When Swanson came up with the Atlanta Braves, he was a subpar hitter for three seasons before he began focusing on hitting the ball hard.</p><p>“Once Swanson started hitting the ball with authority, his numbers jumped,” Kirschner continued. “Volpe was an impressive prospect in the Yankees’ farm system and showcased encouraging power potential for a middle infielder. He became the top prospect in the Yankees’ system because of his special bat. If he could take his pull-centric, hard-hitting approach from the minors and apply it to the majors, he could become one of the best shortstops in MLB.”</p><h2><b>Yankees manager Aaron Boone thinks Anthony Volpe’s playoff hot streak can carry into 2025</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Anthony-Volpe.jpg"><figcaption>Robert Deutsch-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Though Volpe didn’t hit for much power in 2024, his postseason told a slightly different story. He only hit the one home run, but his OPS jumped to .815, compared to .657 in the regular season.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-aaron-boone-gives-anthony-volpe-his-flowers">Yankees manager Aaron Boone</a> saw it coming, even after Volpe struggled in the final weeks of the regular season.</p><p>“The week off leading into the postseason, the little adjustments I saw, it was like, boom, it leapt off the screen,” Boone said. “Then, obviously, he carried it into the games into the postseason. I haven’t seen the bat tracking, but I’m not surprised because I know what I was watching every single day, and that’s what we want.”</p><p>Despite having two full seasons under his belt, Volpe is still only 23. Young players evolve as they grow used to the league, and Volpe should be no exception.</p><p>“I’m really confident that what I saw from him in the final weeks of the season, and then certainly into the postseason, is absolutely something that will hopefully carry over to where he becomes more and more of a consistent offensive player,” Boone added.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
