He had been a solid reliever and set-up man for Hader but was thrust into the big role during a playoff chase. So far, the young hurler has been great.</p><p>Known as the Airbender because of his unreal changeups, Williams has been named an All-Star for the second season in a row with a 1.52 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 29.2 innings. Despite allowing a good amount of walks, Williams also racks up Ks and gets batters to whiff on swings routinely. He has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-devin-williams-struggles-closing-games" rel="noopener">worked through struggles</a> to remain one of the best bullpen arms in baseball, earning a huge comparison from his manager.</p><p>Brewers manager Craig Counsell has been thoroughly impressed with Williams and compared him to Trevor Hoffman, one of the <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/devin-williams-named-to-2023-mlb-all-star-game-roster?partnerID=mlbapp-iOS_article-share" rel="noopener">best relief pitchers in baseball history</a>, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB media.</p><p>“It’s been quite a run for this organization,” Counsell said, via MLB media. “Trevor Hoffman was the first guy that I was fortunate to play with, and there’s been excellence in that position. We’re very lucky. And I think Devin belongs up there with those names…Now, he’s got a long way to go in his career, but that’s how his career has started. He’s pitching at the level those guys pitched at in their career.”</p><p>Hofmann, who played with Counsell for two seasons with the Brewers near the end of his career, earned seven All-Star nominations in his fantastic career. He is now the eponym for the National League’s award for the best relief pitcher in a given season opposite of Mariano Rivera in the AL. Williams received the award in 2020, along with the Rookie of the Year award.</p><p>On a Brewers squad known for its great pitching, Devin Williams is one of the most important pieces along with Corbin Burnes, Brandon Woodruff and, at least this season, Wade Miley. It was Williams’ first appearance since <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/twins-news-carlos-correa-walk-off-hr-comeback-vs-brewers" rel="noopener">the Brewers’ 7-5 loss</a> against the Minnesota Twins Tuesday, during which he blew his first save of the 2023 season.</p><p>The win was big for the Brewers because it pushed Milwaukee past the Pirates for first place in the NL Central. It might have been just as important for Devin Williams personally, who’s <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/devin-williams-julio-teheran-lead-brewers-back-into-first-place?partnerID=mlbapp-iOS_article-share">had trouble finding</a> consistent work.</p><p>Because the Brewers have been in the middle of a skid, Williams’ save opportunities have been few and far between The win over the Pirates was just Williams’ third appearance in 10 days. The lack of work seems to have contributed to Williams’ blown save in Minnesota. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-players-must-be-all-stars-2023" rel="noopener">Williams was arguably the best</a> reliever in the NL before struggling against the Twins.</p><p>Milwaukee’s closer gave up four runs without recording an out, struggling to match the stuff that he showcased earlier in the season. Williams walked two batters and gave up a hit before locking down his 11th save of the season against Pittsburgh.</p><p>“The stuff doesn’t feel [like usual] right now,” Williams said after the Brewers beat the Pirates. “[I’m] working through it. That’s all I can do. … I go out there and I’m expected to be locked in from the first pitch and that doesn’t always happen. You have to work through stuff sometimes.”</p><p>Before taking the loss in Minnesota, Williams’ ERA was a minuscule 0.42. In 22.2 innings, he now has a 1.99 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP and 32 strikeouts.</p><p>Friday’s win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Brewers. Considering that, it was no surprise that the 27-year-old Williams was almost speechless when asked to comment on the deal.</p><p>“I don’t really have a lot to say to be honest with you. I don’t know,” Williams <a href="https://twitter.com/AdamMcCalvy/status/1554559762859278336" rel="noopener">said</a>. “Yeah, I was surprised. He was a huge part of our success … just getting the ball to him was pretty much a sure thing most of the time.</p><p>“It was good to learn from him. Besides, Josh Hader is also just 28 years old and recently made it as an All-Star this 2022. Milwaukee could have been a little more patient with him and not given up on him that easily, though Williams’ consistent play and excellence may have made them comfortable pulling the trigger on the deal.</p><p>The Brewers got a significant return for Hader, though, receiving closer Taylor Rogers, pitching prospect Robert Gasser, outfielder Esteury Ruiz and right-hander Dinelson Lamet in exchange. The relief pitcher will obviously miss some time, but there’s a chance he could be available for the World Series if Milwaukee advances that far.</p><p>This is a tough blow for the Brewers right before the playoffs. Williams has been a key cog in their bullpen, striking out 87 batters in 54 innings and pitching to the tune of a stellar 2.50 ERA. Milwaukee has one of the best pitching staffs in all of baseball, with the bullpen playing a key role in that. In addition to Williams, dominant closer Josh Hader, Brad Boxberger and Brent Suter have all been important.</p><p>The Brewers have been in control of the NL Central for months after the Chicago Cubs fell apart way earlier in the season. Milwaukee <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/mlb/standings" rel="noopener">is currently 94-63</a>, which is still six games ahead of the second-place St. Louis Cardinals, who have won a whopping 17 games in a row.</p><p>The San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers are the two best teams in the NL and have to be considered the favorites, but the Brewers and Cardinals shouldn’t be counted out. Anything can happen in the MLB Playoffs, but now Milwaukee is going to have to win some games without a key reliever because of his foolish actions.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
