Martinez wanted the player to bat left-handed, to play the corner outfield spots and to be capable of spelling Joey Meneses at first or serving as the designated hitter. Then the Nationals agreed to terms with Dominic Smith on Tuesday, giving them a bounce-back candidate who fits each of those requirements and their general offseason vision.</i></p><p>The 28-year-old Smith had only played for one team in the majors before agreeing to join the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nationals-news-washington-brings-excitement-to-post-juan-soto-life-by-calling-up-top-prospect" rel="noopener">Nationals</a>, having spent his first six years in the big leagues with the New York Mets, who selected him in the first round (11th overall) of the 2013 MLB Draft. His first notable campaign in the MLB was in 2019 when he posted a triple slash line of .282/.355/.525 and hit 11 home runs to go with 25 RBI in 197 plate appearances across 89 games played, while also recording a 132 OPS+ for the Mets.</p><p>Smith would follow that season up by slashing .316/.377/.616  and hitting 10 home runs along with 42 RBI in 50 games and 199 plate appearances in 2020 while finishing with a 168 OPS+.</p><p>The Nationals are expected to slot Smith in first base and in the outfield, with the hope that a new environment will spark him back to his top form. The team is expected to non-tender the former first-round pick and likely end the 27-year-old’s association with the franchise, per <a href="https://twitter.com/AnthonyDiComo/status/1593710911289806857" rel="noopener">MLB insider Anthony DiComo</a>.</p><p>Smith was selected in the 2013 MLB Draft, and he made his first significant contribution during the 2019 season when he slashed .282/.355/.525 while hitting 11 home runs and driving in 25 runs. He improved his production during the Covid-shortened 2020 season, slashing .316/.377/.616 with 10 homers and 42 RBI.</p><p>His production was solid in 2021 with 11 home runs and 58 RBI, but the 2022 season was unproductive. He failed to hit any <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-new-york-makes-key-dom-smith-decision-amid-early-struggles" rel="noopener">home runs</a> and his .194/.276/.284 slash line indicated to the Mets that Smith did not have a future with the team.</p><p>Smith struggled to get playing time in manager <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-buck-showalter-achieves-insane-four-decade-feat-with-nl-manager-of-the-year-award-win" rel="noopener">Buck Showalter’s lineup</a>, and when he did get a chance, he did not produce. He eventually suffered a sprained ankle and Smith was sent back to the team’s Syracuse minor league affiliate.</p><p>Smith was frustrated throughout the season, both on and off the field.</p><p>“I was never at a point where I wanted to quit … and it wasn’t even like it had to do with baseball stuff,” Smith said. “It was just stuff not going my way in life. I just felt like things couldn’t get worse, and then they seemingly did, and it kept snowballing worse and worse.”</p><p>Dominic Smith was scheduled to earn $3.95 million in the 2023 season with the Mets. It’s not uncommon for a player to be moved when on the 10 or 15-day IL, but for New York, they were already going to sell low on Smith. With him now injured, it’s unlikely they get much in return.</p><p>The former first-rounder was one of their best hitters in 2019 and 2020, but since then, he’s hit just .233 in nearly 650 plate appearances and even played through a brutal shoulder injury last season. The Mets sent Smith down to Triple-A in May and he’s actually hit a bit better since returning to the big league club, but still, not at the level we saw from him before.</p><p>In 58 games this season, Dominic Smith is batting .194 with zero homers and 17 RBI. He wouldn’t be a bad pickup for a number of teams looking for a left-handed bat because, in the past, he’s swung it well. The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs are reportedly two organizations keeping an eye on the 27-year-old. A fresh start elsewhere and consistent playing time could see Smith find his best again.
