Finnegan posted a 1.50 ERA in 16 appearances after coming over from the Washington Nationals. Investing in pitching is going to be a storyline for Detroit this season, and Finnegan is the first one off the board.</p><p>The Tigers have lost in the American League Division Series in consecutive seasons. While those were their first playoff appearances in a decade, there is still room to grow. With Skubal hitting free agency after the 2026 season, the clock is ticking. Finnegan is a nice piece, but the fanbase wants more.</p><p>The Tigers have been connected to Alex Bregman for the past two offseasons, namely because of his connection to AJ Hinch. If they can bring in the former Houston Astro, that would make them a heavy favorite in the AL Central. A deal involving the right-hander is not considered likely — San Diego would require a steep return in exchange for losing Pivetta — but the team’s options for rebalancing its payroll are limited,” Dennis Lin reported.</p><p>This news certainly came out of nowhere. Pivetta is the best pitcher that the Friars have. The team lost Dylan Cease to the Toronto Blue Jays early in the offseason, and Michael King is a free agent. King could return to the Padres, but there is a chance that he takes a big contract elsewhere. Joe Musgrove is returning from his Tommy John absence, and Yu Darvish will miss the season after undergoing UCL surgery. The Padres’ rotation is a mess.</p><p>Pivetta was one of the best pitchers in the league last season. He posted a 2.87 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 5.3 WAR with 13 wins. He struck out 190 batters in 181.2 innings. He had an opponent batting average of .194 and a .253 OOBP. Hitters struggled all season long trying to get to Pivetta. He gave the Padres a ton of dominant innings.</p><p>Despite his dominance, the Padres could still trade their top starter. Let’s break down which teams could be the best fit for a potential blockbuster trade.</p><h2><b>No. 2 Baltimore Orioles</b></h2><p>The Baltimore Orioles are a great fit for the right-hander. They fell to the Seattle Mariners in the AL Divisional Round in shocking fashion. Tarik Skubal proved to be the top starting pitcher last season, but his future with the team is still up in the air. Whether they trade Skubal or not, the Tigers have a chance to get some insurance by trading for Pivetta. The Tigers have a ton of talent capable of going back to San Diego for a blockbuster trade that are not expensive.</p><p>As of now, only Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize, and Troy Melton are listed as starting pitchers on the 40-man roster. Pivetta would immediately become the best right-handed pitcher on the roster. The Padres are looking for starting pitching in return, but with A.J. Preller as general manager, anything is possible. They reunited with right-hander Drew Anderson, <a href="https://x.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/1997079971245043714" rel="noopener">reaching an agreement</a> in free agency, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.</p><p>The former 21st-round draft pick posted a 3.86 ERA for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens in 2024 before heading to South Korea’s KBO League. He excelled with the SSG Landers  last year, amassing a 2.25 ERA and and 245 strikeouts in 171 2/3 innings. He also found success in Japan from 2022-23. The well-traveled Anderson last pitched in The Show back in 2021, recording a 3.27 ERA and .594 OPS against in nine games for the Texas Rangers.</p><p>Despite the long layoff, Detroit <a href="https://x.com/CodyStavenhagen/status/1997080777259958502" rel="noopener">expects the 31-year-old to be a starter</a>, per The Athletic’s Cody Stavenhagen. Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris is taking an interesting approach to the offseason, one that has elicited strong reactions from the onset. This signing will only add to fans’ curiosity. Following back-to-back playoff appearances, the hope was that the organization would be more aggressive this winter. Now, there is a growing concern that management will do the opposite and scale back.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/mlb-rumors-several-execs-think-tigers-trade-tarik-skubal">Skubal’s future in Detroit</a> seems murky at best, as a contract extension becomes harder to fathom by the day. If Detroit is unwilling to make the remarkable southpaw the highest-paid hurler in MLB history, then Harris better make sure the team gets a massive haul in return. Even if the Tigers can reach a resolution with Skubal before he hits free agency next offseason, more depth is needed.</p><p>Can Drew Anderson be a viable supplemental option to a starting rotation that includes Tarik Skubal, Jack Flaherty, Casey Mize, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-reese-olson-holding-hope-postseason-return">recovering Reese Olson</a> and Troy Melton? A 6.50 ERA in 19 career MLB games is certainly worrisome, but it is not unprecedented for a pitcher to enjoy a resurgence after spending time in Asia. With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/mlb-rumors-several-execs-think-tigers-trade-tarik-skubal">Tarik Skubal leading the rotation</a> and a cast of young and talented position players leading the way, the Tigers certainly have what it takes to do so.</p><p>But this doesn’t mean that they’re going to simply rest on their laurels moving forward and hope for a world of internal improvements. The Tigers, according to the rumor mill, are looking for a starting pitcher or two to deepen the rotation behind Skubal. Moreover, they’re also looking to fortify the bullpen, just as any aspiring World Series contender would want to do.</p><p>To address their starting pitching need, the Tigers, according to Evan Petzold of Detroit Free Press, are <a href="https://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2025/12/02/detroit-tigers-free-agency-pete-fairbanks-michael-king/87566273007/" rel="noopener">setting their sights</a> on a pitcher who once finished in the top 10 of Cy Young voting — Michael King.</p><p>He finished seventh in Cy Young voting in the National League in 2024 with the San Diego Padres, the year in which he tallied a 2.95 ERA across 30 starts with 173.2 total innings pitched.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/chicago-cubs/cubs-rumors-michael-king-free-agent-offseason-targets">King’s quality cannot be denied</a>. But the Tigers have to understand that signing King doesn’t come without risk. He recorded an ERA of 3.44 in 2025, which is a bit of a down year compared to his excellent 2024 campaign, but it’s the injury problems that make him a bit of a roll of the dice.</p><p>King experienced shoulder and knee problems limited him to just 15 starts in 2025 (73.1 innings pitched), although four of those came in September, so this at least means that he’s healthy coming into the offseason and perhaps coming into the 2026 season.</p><h2><b>Michael King is slated for a huge payday in free agency; will the Tigers give it to him?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/11/Michael-King.jpg"><figcaption>David Frerker-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>King declined his option to stay with the Padres in 2025 (worth $15 million) and he then declined the team’s qualifying offer as well (worth $22.025 million).</p><p>This means that, for the Tigers to sign King, they will have to tender a contract that’s at least worth more than $22 million per season. King will also be angling for a long-term deal. Thus, will the Tigers be willing to spend what it would take to bring King in?</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

With the Winter Meetings set to begin, the league at large <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-rumors-jon-heyman-doubtful-tarik-skubal-trade-update">still seem split on whether Skubal will stay or go</a>.</p><p>With the Tigers looking to compete in 2026, they’re much more likely to do so with Skubal on their roster. But with his free agency pending, they could lose him for nothing. Detroit isn’t the one making the calls, but some around the league <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/47166190/mlb-offseason-2025-2026-trade-candidate-player-rankings-skubal-marte-buxton-peralta" rel="noopener">still think he is available for trade</a>, via Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.</p><p>“Despite several executives believing Skubal will move, the Tigers have shown no sign of deviating from their position that the back-to-back American League Cy Young winner will stay in Detroit,” the ESPN insiders wrote. “Though he’s a free agent after 2026 and contract extension discussions have gone nowhere, Skubal is the Tigers’ centerpiece player, and Detroit intends to contend again next season.”</p><p>While some executives think Skubal is available, Passan and McDaniel only give him a 10 percent chance to get traded. That could change if the Tigers are blown away by a deal. But at least for now, Detroit doesn’t seem eager to trade their ace away.</p><p>Which makes sense based on the left-hander’s performance over the last two seasons; winning Cy Young in both. During the 2025 campaign, Skubal put up a 2.21 ERA and a 241/33 K/BB ratio. He would make any team in league’s rotation infinitely better.</p><p>If the Tigers don’t trade him away, they’re risking losing him free agency. But that might be a gamble Detroit is worth risking if a third Cy Young for Skubal is on its way.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
