However, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-fans-erupt-waste-yoshinobu-yamamoto-near-no-hitter">Orioles have taken on the role of spoiler</a>. The team has won eight of nine games in September and five of six matchups against contenders. Baltimore has the Toronto Blue Jays in its sights next and will receive a boost from <a href="https://www.baltimorebaseball.com/sports/orioles-mlb/2025/09/12/orioles-activate-tyler-oneill-injured-list-2-richdubroff/?utm_source=dlvr.it&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=orioles-activate-tyler-oneill-injured-list-2" rel="noopener">the return</a> of Tyler O’Neill.</p><p>The Orioles activated O’Neill from the 10-day IL on Friday, per Rich Dubroff of Baltimore Baseball. The outfielder will return to the team in time for the series opener against Toronto.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-injury-update-phillies">O’Neill landed on the IL</a> most recently with right wrist discomfort. He’s been sidelined by the ailment since August 5, missing the last 31 games.</p><h2><b>Tyler O’Neill will return after 17th-career IL stint</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/Tyler-ONeill-ii.jpg"><figcaption>James A. Pittman-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/tyler-oneill-orioles-agree-to-huge-49-5-million-contract">Orioles signed O’Neill</a> to a three-year, $49.5 million contract in December. Unfortunately, he’s missed the majority of his debut campaign with Baltimore. The eighth-year veteran has been placed on the injured list three times this season.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-make-tough-tyler-oneill-move-amid-neck-injury">O’Neill suffered neck soreness</a> in April, which sidelined him for 14 games. Then a shoulder impingement in May led to a 45-game absence. O’Neill returned to the lineup in July but again landed on the injured list with the wrist ailment in early August. All told, he’s missed 91 games so far this season.</p><p>The Orioles were aware that durability has been a persistent issue in O’Neill’s career. He’s only played more than 96 games twice in eight seasons and he’s never played more than 138 games. The outfielder has made 17 trips to the IL since debuting in 2018.</p><p>When on the field, O’Neill offers tantalizing upside. In the two seasons he was able to play more than 100 games he topped 30 home runs. And he’s a complete player, with two Gold Gloves for his work in left.</p><p>O’Neill has primarily played right field since joining the Orioles. Unfortunately, he hasn’t lived up to his dual threat billing when in the lineup this season. O’Neill is slashing .210/.293/.434 with eight home runs, 23 RBI, 20 runs scored, 100 OPS+ and 0.0 bWAR in 43 games.</p><p>O’Neill will return to the Orioles lineup as the team attempts to create some momentum for 2026 with a strong finish. In addition to the upcoming series against the Blue Jays, Baltimore still has seven games remaining against the New York Yankees this season. That’s what happened when they got a 3-2 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and they were able to get the series sweep.</p><p>Four of their last five games ended with walkoff wins, and they have won eight of their last nine games. Cade Povich <a href="https://www.masnsports.com/blog/entry/orioles-get-dramatics-done-earlier-in-3-2-win-over-pirates" rel="noopener">spoke about the win</a> and how those types of games show the fight the team has as the final stretch of the season is here.</p><p>“Obviously, we love when we’re able to go out and put up seven, eight, nine runs and blow teams out, but I think you really see the heart and the effort these guys put in, in these close games,” Povich said via Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports. “Obviously, with the walkoffs and even today, Beavs having the go-ahead hit, as well, it just shows kind of the fight of this team, and I think it shows a lot for the future.”</p><p>The Orioles are currently 69-77, and though they may not have a chance of making the postseason, the run that they’ve had over the past few weeks has been good for confidence going into the offseason.</p><p>One positive for the team has been their relievers as they’ve registered a 1.14 ERA in the month of September, allowing one earned run or fewer in nine straight games.</p><p>“Obviously, a lot of young guys down there, and I think they’ve gained a lot more experience,” Povich said. “They’ve kind of learned more of themselves at the big-league level, and they’ve done a fantastic job. So even with guys getting on, even when things maybe get a little dicey, they stay cool and are able to grind it out and keep the score down, let our offense come back in and score one. While the<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/2-free-agents-orioles-must-pursue-in-offseason"> Orioles will look to the offseason to pursue</a> any free agents and make changes, the first move was promoting Mike Elias to president of baseball operations.</p><p>The change would be reported by Ken Rosenthal and Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic, who wrote that Baltimore “quietly” promoted Elias to the position from general manager. As to when, the reporters would say it happened <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6620221/2025/09/11/baltimore-orioles-mike-elias-promotion/" rel="noopener">“before their disappointing season even began.”</a></p><p>“The Baltimore Orioles doubled down on the leadership of Mike Elias before their disappointing season even began, quietly promoting him to president of baseball operations, sources told The Athletic,” Rosenthal and Ghiroli wrote.</p><p>Along with hiring a new permanent manager after letting go of Brandon Hyde during the season, the ball club will also have to hire a new general manager to work under Elias, as The Athletic points out.</p><p>“The promotion of Elias occurred last offseason. The Athletic would detail when the “expansion” of Baltimore began, which was hiring a special assistant to the general manager, Danny Haas.</p><p>“The expansion of the team’s baseball operations group began last week when the Orioles hired Washington Nationals scouting director Danny Haas as a special assistant to the general manager,” Rosenthal and Ghiroli wrote.</p><p>Going back to potentially being fans that could be excited for Elias’ promotion, he led a rebuild that, coming off multiple seasons of the Orioles losing over 100 games, the club won 101 and 91 games the past two seasons.</p><p>“Under Elias, 42, the Orioles accelerated a rebuild that began with a 115-loss season before his hiring, and continued with 108- and 110-loss campaigns in his first two full seasons,” Rosenthal and Ghiroli wrote. “But through shrewd drafting and development, Elias transformed the Orioles into a force in the American League.”</p><p>At any rate, Baltimore is looking to improve as the team is currently 68-77 before Thursday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, which puts them last in the AL East. After four straight losses, LA was riding Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s arm to a victory. The Dodgers ace was nearly flawless through 8.2 innings. Then everything fell apart. Yamamoto became the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-yoshinobu-yamamoto-suffers-shocking-twist-last-seen-1923">first pitcher in over 100 years</a> to lose a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning.</p><p>Handed a 3-1 lead and needing just one out, the Dodgers’ bullpen turned disappointment into catastrophe. The Orioles rallied for four runs in the ninth and walked off Los Angeles for the second straight game.</p><p>While manager <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-dave-roberts-no-complaints-after-shocking-loss-orioles">Dave Roberts had “no complaints”</a> following the devastating defeat, Blake Treinen was <a href="https://x.com/SportsNetLA/status/1964521197439504526" rel="noopener">not so forgiving</a> of his performance. “I had to get one flippin’ out, I didn’t do it… That’s a pretty low point for me, coming off the heels of kind of a tough stretch right here. He loaded the bases and walked in a run before being taken out. Tanner Scott replaced him and gave up a walk-off, two-run single. When the smoke cleared, Treinen ended up with the loss, allowing three runs on one hit, two walks and a HBP.</p><p>“Obviously command [was missing]. There’s really no words. You’re paid to be a professional and at least throw strikes, and I didn’t do that. Cost one of the better outings I’ve ever seen in my career with Yama. He deserves better than that. Offense deserves better than that. Just really sucks to be on that end of it. Put Tanner in a tough position to come in, where he’s key-holed to have to throw strikes,” Treinen said.</p><p>Although it was an unusual circumstance, the 11th-year veteran didn’t blame the no-hitter bid for his performance. “Oddly enough, I’ve had to do it once before. Back in ‘18. Sean Manaea. So I kinda understand that I pace myself– That’s not an excuse for how I performed. I’ve just gotta be better. Yoshinobu Yamamoto became the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-yoshinobu-yamamoto-suffers-shocking-twist-last-seen-1923">first pitcher since 1923</a> to lose a no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning. Then the Dodgers’ bullpen collapsed for the second straight game. Neither Blake Treinen or Tanner Scott could record the final out of the contest as LA blew a 3-0 lead.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-fans-erupt-waste-yoshinobu-yamamoto-near-no-hitter">Dodgers fans are ready to riot</a> over the incomprehensible loss. But manager Dave Roberts is <a href="https://x.com/ByJackHarris/status/1964526076367163512" rel="noopener">cool with it</a>.</p><p>“It’s hard to recount a game like this. Where you feel like there’s so many things where you can get a little bit of momentum, build off a great outing by Yoshinobu and take that into tomorrow. And then, obviously, it completely flipped. But the guys fought hard. So with the way we played, I got no complaints. However, that last out proved elusive for the Dodgers. Treinen got the first shot at finishing off Baltimore. But he loaded the bases before walking in a run.</p><p>With the score now 3-2, Scott got the ball. And he gave up a game-winning, two-run single to Emmanual Rivera. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-tanner-scott-blows-another-save-walk-off-home-run">Scott allowed a walk-off to the Orioles</a> for the second straight game and the Dodgers suffered their fifth consecutive loss. The team has now dropped seven of the last eight contests.</p><p>Unlike Roberts, Treinen isn’t good with the outcome. “I have to get one flippin’ out, and I didn’t do it,” he said, per Harris. “There’s really no words. But the pain became excruciating when Los Angeles blew a three-run lead, losing to the Baltimore Orioles 4-3.</p><p>Yamamoto recorded 26 outs in Saturday’s start, allowing just two baserunners and blanking Baltimore over 8.2 innings. Then Jackson Holliday broke up the no-hitter, mashing a 94 mph cutter to right center. Once the shot at history ended, Dave Roberts removed Yamamoto – who had thrown 112 pitches.</p><p>The Dodgers turned to their bullpen to close out a 3-1 win. After the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-shohei-ohtani-replaces-tyler-glasnow-starter-vs-orioles">Dodgers scratched Tyler Glasnow in favor of Shohei Ohtani</a> on the mound, Baltimore’s chances did not look good. However, Orioles starter Dean Kremer got off to a great start against Los Angeles. Tony Mansolino had to take him out after three innings, though.</p><p>Kremer was dealing with some discomfort early in his start, but fought through the pain. He made it through three innings without giving up any hits or runs against one of the league’s flashiest offenses. However, Mansolino’s starter could not make it any further into the game. According to Baltimore Sun writer Matt Weyrich, there were <a href="https://x.com/ByMattWeyrich/status/1964116914445111561" rel="noopener">no specific details</a> on the pitcher’s injury.</p><p>“Dean Kremer is coming out of this game. Dietrich Enns replacing the Orioles starter after three scoreless innings against the Dodgers. No word yet on a specific injury,” Weyrich said.</p><p>Further reports confirmed that Kremer is dealing with <a href="https://x.com/ByMattWeyrich/status/1964117503698669818" rel="noopener">right forearm discomfort</a>, according to Weyrich.</p><p>Ohtani has done well on the mound after Dave Roberts gave him the green light earlier this season. However, the National League MVP candidate found himself in a pitcher’s duel against Kremer. When Enns came into the game in the fourth inning, the Dodgers’ offense was able to attack the young replacement. However, Kremer’s status is the Orioles’ main concern.</p><p>Baltimore’s season has been far from what it expected. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-trevor-rogers-reveals-key-baltimore-stepping-up-after-trade-deadline">Orioles veterans have spoken about how important the rest of the season is</a> to the team. Finding players like Kremer who can become key contributors on the 2026 roster is something that Mansolino and the coaching staff have put emphasis on this season.</p><p>The Orioles’ medical staff took Kremer into the clubhouse to try and determine what is ailing the starting pitcher. They came into the year with championship aspirations because of their young core of former elite prospects, but instead, they have been one of the biggest disappointments in the league.</p><p>The team is currently 64-76 and well out of the playoff picture, and they were even <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/padres-orioles-trade-grades-for-blockbuster-ryan-ohearn-ramon-laureano">big trade deadline sellers</a>. The letdown of a year was caused largely in part because the Orioles were unwilling to spend last offseason. The team let both their ace, Corbin Burnes, and their best home-run hitter, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/mlb-rumors-blue-jays-anthony-santander-4-year-82-million-contract-offer">Anthony Santander, walk in free agency.</a></p><p>The Orioles can’t afford to pinch pennies again. If the young core is to reach their potential, they need to be surrounded with the right veterans, and there are a number of players who make sense for Baltimore to pursue in free agency after the season.</p><h2><b>Dylan Cease</b></h2><p>There are plenty of bats in Baltimore. Even after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/cedric-mullins-trade-grades-for-mets-orioles">trading Cedric Mullins</a>, Ryan O’Hearn, and Ramon Laureano, the Orioles still have a great young core of offensive players. Adley Rutschman, Gunner Henderson, and Jackson Holliday are former No. 1-ranked prospects who have star potential. Colton Cowser, Jordan Westburg, and Heston Kjserstad are great young players, too, and Coby Mayo, Dylan Beavers, and Samuel Basallo also were recently promoted to the majors.</p><p>The team has more than enough offensive depth, but they need pitching help to course-correct their mistake of letting Burnes walk in free agency. Cease is the top starting pitcher set to hit the open market. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-rumors-what-astros-wouldnt-trade-padres-dylan-cease">Padres held onto him at the trade deadline</a> despite rumors that they were going to move him, but they seem unwilling to pay what it will take to retain him.</p><p>Therefore, Cease could be departing in free agency. The Orioles need to capitalize and sign the player who was once a rumored trade target <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/sports/mlb/padres-predicted-trade-108-million-superstar-pitcher-al-powerhouse-2050371" rel="noopener">for the Orioles</a>. Cease has never made an All-Star Game, but he has twice been in the running for the Cy Young award, and he certainly is one of the best players at his position in all of baseball.</p><p>The Orioles have struggled with injuries to their pitching staff, so they need somebody who could slot in at the front of their rotation and win games as their ace. Cease has nasty stuff and would help get the Orioles to the next level.</p><h2><b>Devin Williams</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/779671486-devin-williams.jpg"><figcaption>Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Orioles don’t only need help at starting pitcher; they also need an influx of talent for their bullpen. Devin Williams, like Cease, is having a down year, but he was not only one of the best relievers in the game but one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/ranking-50-best-mlb-players-2025-season">best MLB overall players</a> coming into the season.</p><p>The Orioles should buy low on Williams and expect a return to stardom. Williams has one of the best and fastest fastballs in the sport and three consecutive seasons with a sub-2.00 ERA prior to this year.</p><p>The Orioles traded many of their top relievers, including Gregory Soto, Seranthony Dominguez, Bryan Baker, and Andrew Kittridge, so it’ll take more than just Williams to get the bullpen to where it needs to be. The current New York Yankee would be a great start, though. He can work as a closer or setup man, which would work perfectly in Baltimore because Felix Bautista is an elite closer when healthy, but he has struggled to stay on the field in recent years.</p><p>Cease and Williams will be two of the best free agents available this offseason, and nothing about how the Orioles conduct business would make one assume that they’d be willing to spend the money that it will take to acquire them. Baltimore might need a philosophical change in how they approach spending if they are to maximize their young core, though.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Of the 25 games they have left on the schedule, 16 of them will be coming against teams with a winning record. In fact, they will be facing the New York Yankees seven times, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, and San Diego Padres three times each.</p><p>However, as intimidating as that sounds, Orioles manager Tony Mansolino is not afraid and he <a href="https://www.baltimorebaseball.com/sports/orioles-mlb/2025/08/31/orioles-suffer-another-frustrating-loss-verlander-giants-13-2-richdubroff/" rel="noopener">backs his team</a> to do their best against the teams that, if the season ended today, would qualify for the postseason.</p><p>“I have probably more optimism than that. We’ve got Kyle Bradish going tomorrow [and probably Tyler Wells on Tuesday]. We have some good things happening. This last week has been rough. I don’t think we can take this last week and indict the team’s future on that. I think I’m probably more going to look at what’s happened over the last couple months,” Mansolino said, per Rich Dubroff of Baltimore Baseball.</p><p>Baltimore has gone 2-8 over their past 10 games, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-adley-rutschman-lands-on-il-ahead-astros-clash">they’ve been ravaged by injuries</a> and underperformance from their key guys all year long. But Mansolino has faith that the Orioles will right the ship in no time, difficult schedule notwithstanding.</p><p>“The big leagues are hard and the schedule’s hard and it’s a huge opportunity for a lot of guys, and I’ve got a lot of faith and confidence in these guys that they’ll kind of bounce back and play a better game tomorrow,” Mansolino added.</p><h2><b>Orioles look to bounce back in 2026</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Adley-Rutschman.jpg"><figcaption>Lexi Thompson-Imagn Images.</figcaption></figure><p>The Orioles learned firsthand that progression in the big leagues isn’t linear.
