According to him, Mets closer Edwin Diaz faked an injury so manager Carlos Mendoza could sub him out without advancing a runner in extra innings.</p><p>Mendoza spoke to reporters on Friday and told them that Diaz <a href="https://x.com/AnthonyRieber/status/1915872958435778697" rel="noopener">is healthy</a> after leaving that game with hip cramps, according to Newsday Sports writer Anthony Rieber.</p><p>The Phillies-Mets rivalry is one of the biggest in Major League Baseball. It might mean even more this season, though. Both teams expect to represent the National League in the postseason and win the NL East on the way. Diaz’s questionable exit in such a close game had Thomson questioning the validity of his injury.</p><p>The fact that Mendoza’s closer is healthy is a good sign for New York. The 31-year-old has dealt with injuries for years, but is dominant when he plays. His pitching is a big piece of the Mets’ bullpen and will go a long way in determining just how far they can go in the playoffs.</p><p>Diaz has six saves on the season and has yet to blow an opportunity. After a down year in 2024, it looks like he is on his way back to his dominant form.</p><p>Starting off their season series against the Phillies with a sweep is important for a New York team with big aspirations. After Wednesday’s game, Rob Thomson spoke about Edwin Diaz’s actions on the mound against J.T. Realmuto, all but accusing the closer of faking a hip injury.</p><p>When talking to reporters after the game, Thomson spoke about the issue in the 10th inning. Diaz faced J.T. Realmuto with Nick Castellanos on first base. Throughout the at-bat, Diaz disengaged three times. It should have been an automatic walk, but the call was reversed when the umpires learned that Diaz’s third step-off was because of injury.</p><p>Thomson <a href="https://sny.tv/articles/rob-thomson-edwin-diaz-accuse-faking-injury?latest=1" rel="noopener">didn’t quite believe</a> that story, according to SportsNet New York writer Danny Abriano.</p><p>“So my question was, he wasn’t injured after the first time he stepped off or after the second time he stepped off,” Thomson said about what happened. “So he steps off the third time, they award him second base, then he calls the trainer out. Kind of doesn’t make sense to me. That’s a play that I’ll have to remember to tell our pitchers. Step off a third time, it’s a big part of the game, calls the trainer out. We’ll take you out, we’ll put somebody else in.”</p><p>Diaz’s injury, fake or not, might have robbed the Phillies of an extra-innings win to prevent the series sweep. Winning all three of their matchups against Philadelphia so far gives New York a comfortable lead in the NL East.</p><p>Down the line, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-pete-alonso-simple-plan-scoring-starling-marte-walk-off-hit">close games between the Mets and Phillies</a> could go a long way in deciding not only the division, but also the National League playoff picture. Mets star reliever <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mets-edwin-diaz-explains-mysterious-10th-inning-exit-vs-phillies">Edwin Diaz exited the game in the 10th inning</a>, however. Diaz said he was dealing with “cramps”, something Mets manager Carlos Mendoza <a href="https://x.com/FoulTerritoryTV/status/1915464165604422097" rel="noopener">confirmed during a Thursday appearance</a> on Foul Territory.</p><p>“We got to the mound and he’s like, ‘I’m cramping up… My hip, that’s why I continue to step off (the mound).’ I’m glad that the umpires got together because you got an injured player there, he kept stepping off and stepping off,” Mendoza said. “After the game, checked with him, he doesn’t seem to be too concerned.. As of right now, it’s low level of concern. We’re off today. We will see where we are at tomorrow.”</p><p>The Mets are hopeful that Diaz won’t have to miss time. As Mendoza said, the team will see how Diaz is feeling on Friday before New York’s series against the Washington Nationals.</p><h2><b>Mets star Edwin Diaz hoping to avoid injury absence</b></h2><p>Diaz, 31, was once considered to be one of the best closers in baseball. In fact, there was a time when he was arguably the best closer in the sport. He missed all of 2023 due to an injury, however, and Diaz has not been the same since.</p><p>In 2024, Diaz pitched to a 3.52 ERA while saving 20 games. He recorded respectable numbers, but this is the same pitcher who turned in a jaw-dropping 1.31 ERA to go along with 32 saves in 2022.</p><p>2025 has not gone according to plan so far for the Mets closer. He has earned six saves, but Diaz also owns a 4.91 ERA. With that being said, he still features the ceiling of one of baseball’s best relief pitchers. Diaz can opt out of his contract following the season. He’s trying to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6137455/2025/02/14/new-york-mets-spring-training-edwin-diaz-notes/" rel="noopener">not think about that</a> at the moment.</p><p>“I’m not thinking right now about the opt-out,” Diaz said, per The Athletic. “I just want to help this team to win. My goal is to have a great year, help make the playoffs and win the World Series. That’s my mindset.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-edwin-diaz-contract-details-will-leave-fans-thinking-of-bobby-bonilla">Diaz and the Mets agreed to a five-year deal</a> back in 2022. It was a $102 million deal, and the highest for any relief pitcher at the time.</p><p>Mets management<a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/mets-edwin-diaz-agree-to-5-year-deal#:~:text=D%C3%ADaz%20and%20the%20Mets%20agreed,rocky%20narrative%20with%20the%20Mets." rel="noopener"> seemed happy</a> with paying out that kind of money to the hurler.</p><p>“Edwin has every attribute we look for in a closer,” former Mets general manager Billy Eppler said in 2022, per MLB.com. “He’s a tremendous competitor, has a burning desire to be the best and possesses the stuff to compete with any hitter in the league. We are thrilled he’ll be anchoring our bullpen moving forward.”</p><p>New York has big expectations as the 2025 season begins. The pitcher finished the 2024 season with a 6-4 record, and a 3.52 ERA. The pitcher also picked up 20 saves. He returned from an injury that kept him out of the entire 2023 season.</p><p>This season, Diaz <a href="https://sny.tv/articles/mets-edwin-diaz-contract-opt-out-2025" rel="noopener">feels like he’s stronger</a> than he was in 2024.</p><p>“I got more freedom this year,” Diaz said, per SNY. “I feel really good because I’m able to work on whatever I want. I don’t have to ask trainers, coaches, anyone, ‘Can I do this?’ Now I go out there and play catch, do whatever I want and that’s it.”</p><p>Diaz also pitched for the Seattle Mariners in his career.
