He earned an All-Star selection and top six finish in MVP voting in 2022, but his overall offensive numbers dropped to league average and then fell into substandard territory in 2024. He is finding new life at the plate with the Toronto Blue Jays, however.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cleveland-guardians/mlb-rumors-guardians-traded-andres-gimenez-blue-jays">The offseason trade addition</a> is already <a href="https://x.com/MLBNetwork/status/1907191744514384366" rel="noopener">making franchise history</a> in the Great White North during the 2025 season. The 26-year-old Venezuelan obviously cannot sustain such a torrid power pace, but it is surely invigorating for fans to see a supposedly one-dimensional player brandish a big bat in his new MLB home.</p><h2><b>Is Andres Gimenez an X-factor for Blue Jays?</b></h2><p>Following a Dec. 10 trade that sent Gimenez and right-handed pitcher Nick Sandlin to the Blue Jays in exchange for infielder Spencer Horwitz and outfield prospect Nick Mitchell, the hope was that Toronto had become a more fundamentally sound squad. There is a long way to go until a proper evaluation can be conducted in that regard, but the organization is already receiving an unexpected slugging surge in the form of Andres Gimenez.</p><p>He is posting a .333/.455/.944/.1.399 slash line in this minuscule sample size, providing valuable pop behind fellow <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-news-finally-strike-with-anthony-santander-agreement-after-major-whiffs">newcomer Anthony Santander</a> in manager John Schneider’s lineup. Again, people do not anticipate the man to outhit Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and other premier performers, but maybe they won’t have to worry about a massive drop-off, either.</p><p>Gimenez is less than three years removed from accumulating more than 100 MVP voting points than Guerrero and Bo Bichette combined. One of the biggest additions that they made in the offseason in order to do that was the move to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-toronto-adds-max-scherzer-rotation-free-agency">bring in starting pitcher Max Scherzer</a> on a one-year contract in free agency.</p><p>Scherzer’s debut with the Blue Jays didn’t go according to plan. The three-time Cy Young Award winner pitched just three innings against the Baltimore Orioles before leaving the game due to lat soreness. Now, Scherzer has been placed on the <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44466911/max-scherzer-goes-il-says-wait-thumb-100" rel="noopener">15-day injured list</a> with right thumb inflammation, according to the associated press via ESPN.</p><p>As it turns out, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-blue-jays-max-scherzer-drops-concerning-injury-update">Scherzer’s lingering thumb injury</a> that will keep the 40-year-old out of the lineup is related to the lat injury that ended his first start early.</p><p>“Following Saturday’s 9-5 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, the 40-year-old Scherzer said his lat soreness was directly related to lingering thumb pain that forced him to push back a spring training start earlier this month,” the AP wrote. “Calling himself ‘frustrated,’ Scherzer said solving the thumb issue is his top priority.</p><p>“‘This thumb is absolutely critical to your arm health,’ he said after Saturday’s game. ‘I’ve got to get this 100% before I pitch again.'”</p><p>The Blue Jays will cap off a four-game set with the Orioles on Sunday seeking a win to get the split in front of their home fans. Toronto was able to get the win in Game 2 of the series thanks to a strong start from Kevin Gausman, but the Orioles dominated the other two contests.</p><p>Now, the Blue Jays will need continued success from Gausman and the other members of the pitching staff while Scherzer is out. But as it turns out, the root of the issue goes deeper. Scherzer told reporters the soreness was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/blue-jays-news-blue-jays-max-scherzer-breaks-down-frustrating-thumb-injury">directly linked to the thumb problem that plagued him during Spring Training.</a></p><p>“Max Scherzer says lat soreness he experienced ‘is 100% related to the thumb,’” Shi Davidi reported on X. “Felt discomfort in warmups but tried to fight through it to save bullpen. Still, Scherzer appeared to settle in afterward, retiring six straight at one point before departing.</p><p>Toronto manager John Schneider said Scherzer mentioned the discomfort during warmups but tried to push through it. “Frustrated is a good way to put it,” Schneider said.</p><p>The Blue Jays held a 4-2 lead when Scherzer exited, but things quickly unraveled. The Orioles took full advantage of Toronto’s bullpen, scoring six runs over the next two innings and cruising to a 9-5 win.</p><p>Scherzer’s thumb had been an issue throughout camp and was believed to stem from a nerve-related problem that also limited him late last season with the Rangers. He missed time in Texas due to shoulder concerns and was already considered a health risk entering 2025. The thumb, Scherzer emphasized, is a key concern for overall arm health.</p><p>“The thumb is absolutely critical to your arm health,” he said. “I’ve got to get this 100% before I pitch again.”</p><p>Scherzer signed a one-year, $15.5 million deal with the Blue Jays in January, one of the offseason’s splashiest moves. How many blows can this city absorb?</p><p>How many setbacks can Max Scherzer withstand before he decides he has had enough? The two-time World Series champion and eight-time All-Star is hoping to avoid answering that question until the 2025 campaign concludes. But this is a rough start.</p><p>Scherzer posted a 3.95 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings with the Texas Rangers last year, proving that he is still competent when available. If the team gets concerned about the potential of losing the first baseman for nothing, then they might consider a trade. No. 16)</p><p>As of now, Guerrero might not be on the trading block. Both he and the Blue Jays seem motivated to get a new contract done. The Canada native wants to be in Toronto long-term, and the Blue Jays want him to be their star player. The Blue Jays just put a new offer on the table, but the two sides still <a href="https://x.com/Buster_ESPN/status/1905262809820111341" rel="noopener">aren’t close on an agreement</a>, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.</p><p>Now that the regular season has started, Guerrero might focus on his on-field play, meaning it might be hard to work out the details of a contract. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-rumors-blue-jays-vladimir-guerrero-jr-not-afraid-hitting-free-agency">Blue Jays are at risk of him walking in free agency</a> at season’s end, so they might look to trade him for a huge haul.</p><p>The Cubs would be a great fit for Guerrero, and they certainly have the ammunition to get a deal done. Chicago has one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/top-10-mlb-farm-systems-ahead-of-2025-season">best farm systems in baseball</a>, highlighted by their league-leading seven top-100 prospects. It will take a handful of those young players to get a deal for Guerrero done. This trade proposal even includes Matt Shaw, the team’s top-ranked prospect.</p><p>Additionally, the inclusion of Owen Caissie, Jefferson Rojas, and Jack Neely would make sense in this hypothetical blockbuster. The three top-100 prospects in this deal would help replenish the talent lost in a Guerrero trade for Toronto, as they are all position players. Meanwhile, the Cubs would love to add Guerrero, and he could be the player that gets them over the hump.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/grading-cubs-astros-kyle-tucker-trade">Cubs already traded for Kyle Tucker</a>, so they are clearly looking for hitting help. Guerrero batted to a .323 average and had 30 home runs in what was his fourth straight All-Star season last year. He’d slot right into the heart of the Chicago lineup if they were able to get a deal done. With how deep the team’s farm system is, they might even be able to get away with only trading prospects while keeping the major league roster intact.</p><h2><b>Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s contract status with the Blue Jays</b></h2><p>With the regular season underway, it is becoming more and more likely that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/seattle-mariners/mariners-trade-proposal-for-vladimir-guerrero-jr-sets-blue-jays-star-free">Blue Jays will be forced to trade Guerrero.</a> The first baseman had originally put a Feb. 18 deadline on extension talks, although it appears that the two sides have continued to try and work out a deal since then.</p><p>“I think we’re going to sign him. I think we’re going to extend him,” Blue Jays president and CEO Mark Shapiro <a href="https://www.mlb.com/bluejays/news/mark-shapiro-optimistic-about-vladimir-guerrero-jr-extension" rel="noopener">said on March 20</a>, via Keegan Matheson of MLB.com. “We have such a clear alignment on the desired outcome. Vlad wants to play his whole career as a Toronto Blue Jay. We want him to end his career in a Blue Jays uniform and be a true legacy player for the Toronto Blue Jays. That’s a pretty good place to start.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/grading-juan-soto-mets-historic-765-million-contract">Juan Soto recently signed one of the biggest contracts</a> in MLB history, and it appears that Guerrero wants his new deal to be in Soto’s ballpark. The Blue Jays recently offered Guerrero less than $600 million over 14 years, though. It isn’t quite clear how far off the two sides are on a new deal, but with each passing day, the league gets closer to Guerrero’s impending free agency. He played for the Cardinals for six seasons as he was in St. Louis from 2018 until 2023. O’Neill spent his first season away from the Cardinals last year as he was with the Boston Red Sox. Now, he is with his third team, and he is off to a strong start with the Orioles.</p><p>The Orioles have put together a couple of impressive seasons in a row, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-adley-rutschman-entering-spring-training-pissed-off-after-playoff-disappointment">Baltimore hasn’t been able to find any success in the postseason</a>. With opening day starting on Thursday for the Blue Jays, predictions have flown in from everywhere.</p><p>The Athletic’s Stephen Nesbitt explained <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6231805/2025/03/27/mlb-opening-day-bold-predictions-2025/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=mlbtw&amp;source=mlbtw" rel="noopener">what he thinks will happen</a> with Guerrero Jr and the team.</p><p>“The Blue Jays will not only extend Vladimir Guerrero Jr,” Nesbitt said. “15 years, $600 million with deferrals. But will ride his bat to a Wild Card berth and the club’s first ALDS appearance since 2016.</p><p>The prediction is bold, considering the state of the American League East. The New York Yankees are the reigning AL champions. The Boston Red Sox have made some improvements as well. Still, the Baltimore Orioles have a plethora of young talent.</p><p>It has left the Blue Jays in the dust. Last season, they finished with a 74-88 record and fifth in the AL East. On a team with Guerrero Jr, it didn’t make too much sense.</p><p>While the division itself was tough, it was a season riddled with tension and disappointment. Not to mention, Guerrero Jr’s contract was a major talking point.</p><p>He talked about wanting to stay with Toronto, but he also knows his worth.</p><h2><b>Will Vladimir Guerrero lead the Blue Jays to prominence?</b></h2><p>In his sixth season, Guerrero Jr had the most efficient year of his career. He batted .323 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs. It was a major step up in terms of efficiency.</p><p>Everyone knew his power, but his discipline was to be admired. Not to mention, his durability is beyond impressive. Guerrero Jr played in <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/guerrvl02.shtml" rel="noopener">158 of 162 possible games</a>. Even when his team wasn’t set to make the playoffs or the Wild Card, he continued playing.</p><p>With the state of the AL East, it’s tough to say what the Blue Jays will be able to do. However, the Yankees lost Juan Soto and the Orioles lost Corbin Burnes. If anything, this might be the opportunity for Toronto to capitalize on.</p><p>Whether or not they do won’t be known until Opening Day commences. However, Guerrero Jr has so much production and ability. However, a gap still remains between the two sides, according to Olney. It appears that Guerrero will enter the 2025 season with just one year remaining on his contract.</p><p>It remains to be seen whether or not Guerrero is willing to listen to the Blue Jays’ offers during the season. However, a player as good as him being so close to free agency, it might not be the wise move for him from a financial standpoint.</p><p>Based on Guerrero’s previous comments, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/mlb-rumors-blue-jays-500-million-offer-vladimir-guerrero-jr">the asking price likely ranges from $500-600 million</a>. As of right now, the Blue Jays and Guerrero have not been able to find a common ground.</p><p>Although the Blue Jays struggled in 2024, Guerrero posted what was arguably his second-best season, <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/vladimir-guerrero-jr/19611/stats?position=1B" rel="noopener">slashing .323/.396/.544 with 30 home runs</a>, a 165 wRC+ and 5.4 WAR, according to FanGraphs. Guerrero’s best season was in 2021, when he was a finalist for the MVP Award and lost out to Shohei Ohtani. So when the first baseman compliments the clubhouse, it is noteworthy for Canadian baseball fans.
