Although the Mets still possess plenty of talent, no ballclub can currently match LA’s reputation. The likeliest path to a World Series ring still appears to run through Chavez Ravine.</p><p>Shohei Ohtani just won his second straight National League MVP Award, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman round out a fearsome trio and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-yoshinobu-yamamoto-teammates-game-7-performance">Yoshinobu Yamamoto-led starting pitching rotation</a> achieved superhero status in the playoffs. But it’s easy to forget that the Dodgers made the same move last season. Yes, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-beat-cubs-blue-jays-72-million-tanner-scott-contract">Dodgers signed Tanner Scott to a $72 million contract</a> to be their closer. Ultimately, that is not what happened.</p><p>Scott struggled mightily in 2025, going 1-4 with a 4.74 ERA and 23 saves, and a career-high 10 blown saves over 61 appearances. Then, he sustained an injury before the playoffs, leaving the Dodgers with no trustworthy closer. That is why they used Yoshinobu Yamamoto to close things out in Game 7, a day after he started Game 6. They didn’t have anyone else.</p><p>It’s safe to say <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-la-garbage-bullpen-epic-choke-not-seen-since-1988">the Dodgers’ bullpen was a disaster</a> last season. Things got so bad that they earned an <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46445541/dodgers-win-wild-card-game-1-vs-reds-blake-snell-home-run-barrage" rel="noopener">unwanted record for futility.</a> With the Dodgers signing Diaz, they are getting someone they believe is incredibly reliable. Diaz went 6-3 with a 1.63 ERA and 28 saves over 62 games. While those are good stats, here is why this acquisition could backfire.</p><h2><b>Dodgers’ receiver volatility makes Diaz a major gamble</b></h2><p>The world has seen what happens when Diaz is pitching well. However, it has also seen what happens when he does badly. To date, Diaz has never had two consecutive seasons with an ERA under 2.00. The last four seasons represent a troubling pattern, where he has followed up an elite season with one that is merely passable.</p><p>With this signing, the Dodgers are now paying approximately $39 million to two relievers. Yes, the Dodgers can afford it, and will likely shatter the luxury tax, but it also paints a picture of troubling figures. While the Dodgers have not let it become an issue, it could eventually. Scott has been injured, and Diaz has never been consistent. Although Diaz will be the closer, what happens if he starts to struggle?</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Tanner-Scott-throws-against-the-Mariners.jpg"><figcaption>© John Froschauer-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2><b>Injury history and declining consistency</b></h2><p>Diaz has only had one major injury, and it happened in 2023 during the World Baseball Classic. Coincidentally, there will be a World Baseball Classic in 2026. What happens if Diaz pitches and sustains another injury? Scott suffered an injury last season, forcing the Dodgers to go in a different direction.</p><p>There is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-kike-hernandez-drops-mic-edwin-diaz-signing">massive excitement about the Diaz signing</a>, but he needs to stay healthy. Likewise, Scott must bounce back. They may have won the World Series twice without a dependable closer, but that eventually will backfire. Other teams are improving, and the Dodgers must firmly establish a shutdown guy who can close games, as they cannot rely on Yamamoto every time.</p><h2><b>Dodgers’ risk of repeating a mistake they made last year</b></h2><p>The Dodgers won the 2025 World Series, so the mistake does not seem that awful. And while the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-news-andrew-friedman-cryptic-free-agency-edwin-diaz">Dodgers will continue to be active in free agency,</a> they cannot afford to sign a new closer every season. It gets to a point where every reliever on the team will be highly paid and underperforming.</p><p>The Dodgers seemingly have won the free agency race again. But they must establish defined roles if they wish to continue winning titles. Diaz and Scott will both be making a lot of money to pitch in high-leverage situations. With the entire league attempting to take them down, the boys in blue need these two more than ever. Using starting pitchers to close out playoff games does not always work. However, Andrew Friedman and the ball club are always looking for ways to improve, and trading starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow could help them accomplish that goal.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-rumors-dodgers-join-edwin-diaz-sweepstakes-mets-blue-jays">Dodgers already signed star pitcher Edwin Diaz</a>, addressing their closer uncertainty. Meanwhile, Los Angeles features no shortage of starting pitching depth. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-rumors-la-trade-tyler-glasnow">Rumors of a possible Glasnow trade</a> have begun to emerge in recent weeks.</p><p>Glasnow is under contract through 2027 and has a club option for 2028. The 32-year-old has played a significant role in the Dodgers’ success over the past couple of seasons. Moving him could help the Dodgers get even better, though.</p><p>Los Angeles could acquire younger position players in a deal for Glasnow. The ball club may even add star prospects, as the Dodgers are always thinking about the future. Another idea that has been floated is that the Dodgers could look to include Glasnow in a potential deal for Detroit Tigers star Tarik Skubal.</p><p>Regardless of the return, moving on from Glasnow makes more sense than one may initially imagine. There is one more reason why the Dodgers should consider a Glasnow trade, however.</p><h2><b>Dodgers’ Tyler Glasnow uncertainty</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Tyler-Glasnow-on-Oct.-16-2025.jpg"><figcaption>Jayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Glasnow was an All-Star in 2024. He features some of the best stuff in baseball when healthy. At 32 years old, though, one has to wonder what Glasnow’s future in MLB holds.</p><p>He has dealt with injury trouble throughout his big league career. The right-handed hurler made his MLB debut back in 2016, working as both a starter and a reliever. Since being converted to a full-time starter with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2018, Glasnow has never started more than 22 games in a single season.</p><p>Despite pitching well in 2025 — he recorded a 3.19 ERA — Glasnow only made 18 starts. He is not getting any younger and Glasnow’s injury history leaves room for concern.</p><p>There is not too much reason to be worried about performance decline. Glasnow has continued to pitch well — and even improve — while on the mound in recent years. The possibility of missing time is what stands out as a concern, and trading him right now would allow the Dodgers to maximize his value.</p><h2><b>Should LA move Glasnow for a superstar or multiple players?</b></h2><p>The idea of including Glasnow in a Skubal deal is intriguing. However, the Tigers may ask for younger MLB players/top prospects. The Dodgers would have to part ways with their best overall prospects to acquire the reigning AL Cy Young winner, but landing Skubal may not cost them Glasnow.</p><p>Rather, the Dodgers should look for a separate trade partner for Glasnow if they decide to move on from him. LA’s roster does not need a whole lot of help, but adding extra position player/bullpen depth to go along with a prospect or two would not hurt.</p><p>Do the Dodgers have to trade Glasnow? No, as he is a talented pitcher who would help the team while on the mound in 2026. With a plethora of starting rotation depth, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/los-angeles-dodgers/dodgers-rumors-why-tyler-glasnow-was-just-named-as-a-surprise-sleeper-trade-candidate">Tyler Glasnow’s name has emerged in trade rumors</a>.</p><p>According to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN, the Dodgers are “<a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/47265901/mlb-winter-meetings-2025-winners-losers-takeaways-offseason-free-agency" rel="noopener">not opposed to moving</a>” Glasnow.</p><p>“Tyler Glasnow’s name has come up in conversations, and the Dodgers would not be opposed to moving him,” Gonzalez wrote in a recent article for ESPN.</p><p>This isn’t the first time Glasnow has been mentioned as a possible trade candidate this offseason. It does provide an update, though, suggesting Los Angeles is at least open to the idea of moving the right-handed hurler.</p><p>Glasnow agreed to a five-year extension after getting traded to the Dodgers ahead of the 2024 season. His deal guarantees him at least two more seasons of making $30 million each year, and the contract also includes a 2028 club option. So, why would the Dodgers trade him?</p><p>LA features some of the best starting pitching depth in the league despite Clayton Kershaw’s retirement. Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Blake Snell will lead the rotation, while Roki Sasaki, Gavin Stone and Emmet Sheehan are among the other rotation candidates for the future.</p><p>With so much starting pitching, the Dodgers could move Glasnow to strengthen a different area of need. Admittedly, Los Angeles’ roster doesn’t have too many questions. The Dodgers are a juggernaut at the moment.</p><p>Nevertheless, Andrew Friedman always seems to be one step ahead of the competition.
