As a result, a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/rockies-news-colorado-prospect-chase-dollander-athletics">youth movement could already be underway</a> in Colorado, as the team is reportedly set to promote one of their top prospects, outfielder Zac Veen.</p><p>Veen, who was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2020 MLB draft, climbed the ranks last year all the way up to Triple-A, which is where he started the 2024 campaign at. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/zack-wheeler-dominates-rockies-sets-phillies-franchise-record">Rockies have struggled in recent seasons</a> and could use a new star on the roster.</p><h2><b>Will Chase Dollander become Rockies’ next ace?</b></h2><p>According to MLB.com, Dollander entered the 2025 season as the <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects" rel="noopener">No. 24 overall prospect</a> in the sport. His fastball reaches up to 99 MPH and he also throws a slider, curveball and changeup. Dollander’s slider is highly-regarded alongside his fastball.</p><p>As a young flame-throwing hurler, Dollander is still working on the command of his pitches. Many hard-throwing pitchers initially struggle with control. Dollander’s stuff will play at the big league level, though. If he can continue to develop the command of his pitches then the Rockies may have their next ace.</p><p>Pitching in the elevation of Colorado at Coors Field has proven to be a difficult task over the years. The Rockies have desperately needed reliable pitching as a result. Perhaps Dollander will emerge as a star and find success despite the challenges of the elevation.</p><p>Colorado’s offense has also endured its share of struggles. In the process, he made franchise history, becoming the first Phillies pitcher to go 13 consecutive regular-season starts allowing <a href="https://x.com/ScottLauber/status/1907587682638651585" rel="noopener">two earned runs or fewer</a> in six or more innings — the longest such streak in club history.</p><p>“It’s just Zack being Zack,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said postgame. “He’s a workhorse, and he sets the tone every time he takes the mound.”</p><p>Wheeler’s streak is the longest in MLB since Shane McClanahan did it in 2022 and places him among elite company. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Colorado Rockies</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>When news broke that the Los Angeles Angels were <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/angles-news-la-releases-outfielder-mickey-moniak-noah-synergaard-trade-phillies">releasing former first overall pick Mickey Moniak</a> just before the opening day of the 2025 MLB season, it turned heads around the sport.</p><p>Why, fans wondered, would the Angels, who aren’t expected to be very good this season, opt to release such a high-upside prospect so early in his career when they only owed him $2 million on the year following arbitration?</p><p>Well, while fans will debate that one for weeks, months, or the rest of the season – especially if Moniak goes off this season – the Angels loss is the Colorado Rockies’ gain, as they’ve signed the outefielder to a new one-year deal that will at least be <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/mickey-moniak-rockies-contract" rel="noopener">partially subsidized by the fine folks in Anaheim</a>.</p><p>Originally drafted first overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2016, Moniak didn’t make it to the Phillies <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/moniami01.shtml" rel="noopener">big league club</a> until September of 2020, when he was promoted to the 40-man roster down the stretch. From there, he bounced around from the starting lineup to the bench and back to the minors before being traded to Los Angeles in August of 2022 <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/phillies-news-mickey-moniak-has-hurt-feelings-about-tenure">in a deal for Noah Syndergaard.</a></p><p>In LA, Moniak received plenty of run but didn’t do much with it, appearing in 228 games with 803 plate appearances but finished out his run with just 31 homers, 100 RBIs, and a batting average of .242, which is better than his marks in Philadelphia but not by much.</p><p>Now landing in Colorado as a depth addition ahead of opening day, Moniak might finally get a full season in the bigs to figure things out and highlight what kind of player he can be moving forward, be that a speedy utility man or a performer capable of doing even more with some additional development.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

His in-depth knowledge of two of the most passionate and raucous fan bases in the country gives him a truly unique writing voice.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Cleveland Guardians</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Cleveland Guardians have <a href="https://x.com/tim_stebbins/status/1903593804436779325" rel="noopener">completed a trade</a> with the Colorado Rockies that will reunite them with outfielder Nolan Jones in exchange for utility man Tyler Freeman, per MLB.com’s Tim Stebbins (originally reported by Thomas Harding).</p><p>The organization that first drafted Jones in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft is ready to give him another look. Cleveland traded him for infielder Juan Brito in November of 2022 but is clearly pleased with the progress he has made in Colorado.</p><p>Despite a brutal and injury-riddled 2024 season, which saw the 26-year-old bat just .227 with with three home runs in 79 games, Jones has flashed a great deal of talent in the past. Plenty of people expected a genuine breakout campaign with the Rockies last year, or even a possible All-Star selection, but maybe he needs a change of scenery to unlock his full abilities.</p><h2><b>Guardians look to round out roster before 2025 season</b></h2><p>Although the Guardians initially moved off of Jones, they have a track record of developing productive position players. He can provide added pop to a lineup that was looking quite thin following the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/diamondbacks-news-acquires-josh-naylor-trade-guardians">Josh Naylor trade</a> and David Fry’s elbow injury. Even if the Pennsylvania native does not return to his 2023 form (.297 batting average, 20 homers in 106 games), he seemingly carries a higher ceiling than the player Cleveland shipped out to the National League.</p><p>Freeman, a second-rounder himself, has a .223/.304/.329/.632 slash line through 206 games. He is still only 25 years of age, though, so perhaps the Rockies believe he can figure out something at the plate. His versatility should come in handy as well, but fans surely expected a bit more upside in a Nolan Jones trade package.</p><p>While Colorado continues its long rebuild, the wheels are turning in the Guardians’ front office. President of baseball operations Chris Antonetti struck <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/cleveland-guardians/guardians-news-tanner-bibee-contract-extension">an agreement with starting pitcher Tanner Bibee</a> on a five-year contract extension and then quickly shifted his attention to getting a deal done with the Rockies. Regardless of how the franchise’s offseason approach works out, it appears motivated to stay in the American League playoff conversation.</p><p>Jones does not have much time to adjust to his new reality. Estrada sustained the injury after being <a href="https://x.com/BNightengale/status/1903146932266311965" rel="noopener">hit by a pitch</a> from Texas Rangers’ Kumar Rocker, disrupting Colorado’s plans just one week before Opening Day.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/rockies-news-colorado-adds-former-giants-yankees-infielder-on-major-league-deal">Estrada, signed to a one-year, $3.25 million contract this offseason</a>, was brought in to stabilize second base after the Rockies chose to move on from Brendan Rodgers following the 2024 season. Although Estrada struggled last year with the Giants, hitting just .217 with nine home runs and dealing with multiple wrist injuries, his prior three seasons showcased significant potential. Between 2021-2023, Estrada hit a solid .266/.320/.416 while offering positional versatility and speed, stealing over 20 bases twice.</p><p>Manager Bud Black and the Rockies hoped Estrada would rediscover his earlier form, and he appeared ready after a promising spring training where he batted <a href="https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/03/thairo-estrada-to-miss-four-to-eight-weeks-with-broken-wrist.html" rel="noopener">.400/.421/.457</a> in 38 plate appearances. His glove is his strength, having significant experience at all four infield positions.</p><p>However, shifting Farmer into an everyday role now leaves Colorado thin in bench depth. Prospect Adael Amador shows promise but is inexperienced at just 21 years old without time at Triple-A. Greg Jones offers flexibility but spent more time in the outfield last season. Owen Miller remains a non-roster possibility but might not fully address the team’s needs.</p><p>Given this internal uncertainty, the Rockies may look externally for help. Potential targets include Nicky Lopez, recently released by the Chicago Cubs, and former Rockies infielder Garrett Hampson, who could become available if he opts out of his minor-league deal with Arizona. This is not just a two-out celebration, it comes after every punch out he throws with the Rockies.</p><p>“It’s been something I’ve been doing ever since I was a kid,” Yan told MLB.com through a translator. “It’s nothing I do to offend the other team. Every time I celebrate, I always look in my corner. I look at my guys, my catcher, and my side.”</p><p>Before the Rockies, Yan was picked up by the Miami Marlins in 2021. He spent three years in their minor-league system. Last year, he went to Japan and played for the Saitama Seibu Lions, posting a 5.74 ERA in 49 appearances. His Dominican Winter League run was excellent, with a 1.71 ERA in 25 games and 26 punchouts.</p><p>Considering he was a spring training invitee and is not under contract with the Rockies, Yan is unlikely to make the roster. But the team should be desperate to fill the seats and Yan is already making waves. He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Colorado Rockies</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>It is safe to say that it has not gone to plan for Kris Bryant with the Colorado Rockies after signing a seven-year, $182 million contract with the team ahead of the 2022 season, but he is attempting to put together his best year with the franchise in 2025, and he spoke about <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2025/02/23/rockies-kris-bryant-feeling-good-spring-training/" rel="noopener">making it back into game action</a> against the Milwaukee Brewers in a spring training matchup on Sunday.</p><p>“This was a big win for me,” Kris Bryant said, via Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post. “Honestly, just being on the field, feeling good and playing baseball is a big win for me. I’m just pretty proud of myself for getting to this point and getting back on the field.”</p><p>Bryant drew two walks in the Rockies’ 6-1 win, but he was very happy to just get back onto the field. During his tenure with the Rockies, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/colorado-rockies/rockies-kris-bryant-makes-honest-crying-admission-amid-injury-frustrations">Bryant has missed time due to back and foot issues</a> and has played just 33% of the possible games since his signing. As of right now, Bryant says he is feeling good, and he is working on how to keep himself that way.</p><p>“I’m feeling good,” Bryant said. “There are days when (my back feels) a little cranky, but that’s a good thing for me because I know every day is not going to feel perfect. … So, I’m finding ways to figure out how to work through certain things and certain motions that might give me a fit here and there.”</p><p>As for in-game adjustments, Bryant mentioned a stance change, standing more upright in the box to possibly conserve his legs and back.</p><p>“I’ve been wide my whole career, and I’m trying to save my legs a little bit, and, in turn, that might save my back,” Bryant said. “Everything I’ve worked on and focused on is an attempt to stay on the field. His signing also allows the team to be patient with injured reliever Lucas Gilbreath, who is recovering from thoracic outlet surgery.</p><p>With 328 career appearances over 10 MLB seasons, Alexander brings veteran leadership to a Rockies bullpen that features several young arms competing for high-leverage roles. The team currently lacks a defined closer, with Tyler Kinley and Justin Lawrence having struggled in 2024. That could open the door for younger relievers like Seth Halvorsen or Victor Vodnik to emerge in late-inning roles.</p><p>Alexander has never been a full-time closer, but he does have 10 career saves and plenty of experience in high-pressure situations, including 62 career holds. The Dodgers will go into next season as favorites to win the World Series. As we have seen many times over the years, however, the postseason is a great equalizer, and the best team often does not come out on top.</p><p>The Rockies and Black will have to deal with all of these additions for the Dodgers. Colorado is not viewed as one of the playoff-caliber teams in the National League, but the expanded playoffs that have been in place since 2022 makes it more likely for a surprise to happen.</p><p>For the Rockies to put together a surprise season, they will need veterans like Kris Bryant and Ryan McMahon to step up, along with young players like Ezequiel Tovar, Brenton Doyle, Michael Toglia and Nolan Jones showing development as well. The rotation, with pitchers like German Marquez, Ryan Feltner, Kyle Freeland and more will have to be good enough in a tough pitcher’s environment in Colorado as well.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Others are great leaders. Charlie Blackmon was both during his 14-year MLB run. His playing days may be over, but the longtime fan favorite is still looking to utilize this impactful combination in <a href="https://x.com/ByRobertMurray/status/1883191921755169047" rel="noopener">his second act</a>. The Colorado Rockies are hiring him to serve as the special assistant to general manager Bill Schmidt, per MLB insider Robert Murray.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rockies-news-charlie-blackmon-retirement-14-year-career">Blackmon retired at the end of last season</a> after spending his entire career with the Rockies. The team only reached the playoffs twice during that span (2017-18) and failed to advance past the National League Division Series, but without Blackmon, the fan base would have endured uninterrupted despair for almost a decade and a half. It is only fitting that he is now tasked with helping the franchise crawl out of the basement and return to relevance.</p><h2><b>Charlie Blackmon bleeds Rockies purple</b></h2><p>The 2008 second-round draft selection stamped a distinguishable mark in Coors Field, accumulating a lifetime .293 batting average, 227 home runs, a .479 slugging percentage and .832 OPS. Blackmon is the team’s all-time leader in triples (68) and ranks second, behind only Hall of Famer Todd Helton, in hits (1,805), doubles (334), runs scored (996), total bases (2,956) and games played (1,624). No. 19 is embedded in Rockies baseball.</p><p>Blackmon’s peak featured two Silver Slugger awards, a batting title, four All-Star Game selections and a top-five MVP finish in 2017. Beyond his impressive accolades, though, he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cubs-news-mike-tauchman-reveals-key-charlie-blackmon-advice-that-helped-fuel-breakout-campaign">brought invaluable wisdom</a> and enthusiasm to the clubhouse. His wild beard, while highlighting his fun-loving demeanor, can unfairly obscure his intelligence at times. All of the 38-year-old’s best traits will ideally be on full display in the front office.</p><p>Colorado is counting on it. Bill Schmidt scouted Charlie Blackmon out of college and knows the wealth of baseball insight and experience he can bring to the special assistant position. There will always be inherent limitations facing this club– smaller payroll and a rough park for pitchers– but changing the organizational culture is an attainable goal.</p><p>Blackmon can once again provide the Rockies with the jolt they desperately need, even if it goes unseen this time. Following consecutive 100-loss seasons and six straight losing campaigns overall, change is long overdue. He hopes to see his beloved Chicago Bears win a Super Bowl someday.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Colorado Rockies</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>After a year hiatus, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-carlos-mendoza-sends-message-after-new-york-land-juan-soto">Juan Soto is back in the National League</a> after signing his mega contract with the New York Mets. It won’t be as often as when he was on the San Diego Padres, but Bud Black and the Colorado Rockies must prepare for the Soto challenge once again.</p><p>When that matchup does come, Black knows exactly what to expect. But he <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5985812/2024/12/11/juan-soto-ted-williams-765-million-future-mets/" rel="noopener">also knows it’ll be difficult</a> to truly stop Soto’s offensive prowess, via Jayson Stark of The Athletic.</p><p>“When you use the words, plate discipline, that encompasses a lot of things,” Black said. “But for me, it’s how he conducts the at-bat, where it’s patience, but yet you sense that he’s ready to hit. It’s sort of an instinctual thing. It’s an intangible that I think pitchers feel, and catchers feel. And the opposing manager. And the opposing pitching coach.”</p><p>“There’s just something about the at-bat when it’s him up there,” Black continued. “It doesn’t matter, it’s the same, whether it’s 7:05 pm, hitting in the first inning, or at 9:30, hitting in the ninth. There’s not a difference in the quality of the at-bat.”</p><p>Soto’s lone season with the New York Yankees saw him hit .288 with 41 home runs and 109 RBI. He earned his fourth-straight All-Star appearance. Soto also drew 129 walks and scored and American League leading 128 runs.</p><p>No one on the Rockies had a batting average over .270 in 2024. No one had more than 26 home runs or 78 RBI – both of which were accomplished by Ezequiel Tovar. Tovar also led the team in runs (83) while Ryan McMahon had the team lead in walks (69). Both still well below Soto’s numbers.</p><p>Colorado finished the 2024 campaign ranked 19th in the league with 682 runs scored. Add Soto’s 128 to the mix and the Rockies jump to fourth in the league with 810 runs scored.</p><p>Of course, that is all a pipe dream. Rockies ownership seems unlikely to ever <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-juan-soto-765-million-contract-intriguing-family-perk">hit that $765 million Soto earned</a> on one player. Still, Bud Black can admired from afar and hope his hitters learn a thing or two from Juan Soto’s approach at the plate.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
