A major reason was his strong performance in spring training in which he hit five home runs.</p><p>He is currently batting .385, has five hits, two home runs, and two RBIs.</p><p>Rice is coming a season in which he only batted .171, had 26 hits, seven home runs, and 23 RBIs while playing 50 games. Despite some struggles hitting for average, Rice has shown the Yankees that he is a unique versatile talent, going from playing catcher to first base.</p><p>There is talk that Rice could become a replacement for Anthony Rizzo at first base if needed.</p><p>In essence, the decision to bat him leadoff was meant to be all along.</p><h2><b>Ben Rice’s past performances as leadoff for the Yankees</b></h2><p>On June 18, 2024, Rice made his major league debut with the Yankees at first base. He came in to fill in for Rizzo who was out with a broken arm.</p><p>On July 4, he batted leadoff 15 games into his career to replace shortstop Anthony Volpe who was struggling at the time.</p><p>Rice went 1-for-5 in his leadoff debut against the Boston Red Sox.</p><p>Two days later, Rice made Yankee history while batting leadoff. In that game, he became the first rookie to hit three home runs in a game. One of them was a leadoff home run to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead.</p><p>The Yankees went onto win 14-4.</p><p>Since then, Rice has won the trust of Boone to step up to the plate and contribute.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

On their recent Top 100 list, ESPN ranked the slugger fourth despite his AL MVP last season. When <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44479703/mlb-rank-2025-top-100-ranking-audit-players-feedback-hits-misses" rel="noopener">asking other players in the league for comment</a>, one veteran crushed the list for Judge’s placement.</p><p>“I like Bobby Witt [Jr.]’s skill set, and he did some great things last year,” Pirates star Andrew McCutchen said of the second-ranked player. “But what Judge did for a couple of years running, it’s hard for me to put [Witt] above him.”</p><p>His teammate Tommy Pham agreed, “You’ve got Judge as the fourth-best player? Am I tripping here?” He continued, “Look at Judge’s numbers. Judge can’t be that low. With all due respect, everybody above him on the list is a great player — Mookie [Betts], Bobby, Ohtani is a unicorn. But Judge had a Barry Bonds season last year.”</p><p>By many measurements, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/did-yankees-aaron-judge-just-have-the-goat-right-handed-hitting-season">Judge did have the greatest season ever by a right-handed hitter</a>. He led the league with 58 homers and 144 RBIs and won his second American League MVP Award. Ohtani is ranked first, which is understandable, but Witt and Betts at two and three, respectively, appear to be causing the most problems.</p><p>Judge had that season last year for the Yankees despite a dismal April. He did not hit his fourth home run until April 24 last year and smoked number four before March ended this year. Maybe ESPN’s Top 100 list gave the Yankees captain motivation to have a consistent season and go after his 62-homer record.</p><p>There are <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44479475/mlb-rank-2025-top-100-baseball-players-ohtani-judge-betts-skenes-witt#nyy" rel="noopener">seven Yankees on the list</a>, including Judge. Max Fried, Devin Williams, Jazz Chisholm Jr, Anthony Volpe, Carlos Rodon, and Cody Bellinger are all represented. According to a recent report, while asphyxiation was initially believed to be the cause of death, it turned out <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/44513420/carbon-monoxide-ruled-cause-death-brett-gardner-son" rel="noopener">carbon monoxide poisoning</a> was the reason for Miller’s death, with the belief being that his hotel room in Costa Rica was contaminated.</p><p>“Carbon monoxide poisoning was the cause of death of the teenage son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, authorities in Costa Rica said Wednesday night. Gallen tied a career-high with 13 strikeouts, allowed just three hits, didn’t issue a single walk, and carved through a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/yankees-news-obliterate-home-run-record-scoring-hot-start-2025">Yankees lineup featuring stars like Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger</a>. Over 6 2/3 shutout innings, he collected an <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/zac-gallen-strikes-out-13-yankees-in-d-backs-win" rel="noopener">eye-popping 24 swings and misses</a> — the most in any start of his career.</p><p>On a frigid, blustery night with temperatures hovering in the low 40s and wind chills making it feel much colder, Gallen took the mound in short sleeves — a nod to his New Jersey roots and cold-weather high school days. Gallen credited his catcher Gabriel Moreno, who called nearly the entire game — a rarity, as Gallen often uses PitchCom to call pitches himself.</p><p>“Gabi had a real good feel for what they were trying to do,” Gallen said. “We both prepped a pretty good amount to kind of understand what we had to do to get those guys.”</p><p>The Diamondbacks gave Gallen an early cushion, scoring four runs in the first two innings off Yankees starter Carlos Rodón. A two-run homer from Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in the first and RBI contributions from Geraldo Perdomo and Ketel Marte in the second helped Arizona secure its first-ever regular season series win at Yankee Stadium.</p><p>Despite Arizona’s bats going silent after the second inning, Gallen’s dominance kept the Yankees off the scoreboard until the ninth. Boone and the Yankees managed a rally against the D-backs bullpen, as Anthony Volpe lifted a three-run homer off A.J. Puk to bring New York within one run. Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen tied a career-high with 13 strikeouts across 6.2 shutout innings, as New York lost 4-3. After the game, though, the bigger concern was that of Yankees starter Carlos Rodon.</p><p>During the top of the 5th inning, Rodon took a <a href="https://twitter.com/SamLuckiniESM/status/1907588002865377354" rel="noopener">comebacker off of his forearm</a>. The exit velocity of the line drive was listed at 115 miles per hour. New York fans can breathe a sigh of relief, though. The <a href="https://x.com/ChrisKirschner/status/1907614270663061718" rel="noopener">X-rays came back clean</a>, according to The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner.</p><p>Consider that a bullet dodged. Well, figuratively because Rodon literally could not avoid the bullet.</p><p>Rodon completed six innings of work on Wednesday, allowing four earned runs on three hits and four walks. He did rack up five strikeouts.</p><p>With the loss, Rodon fell to 1-1 on the season. He previously picked up a win during <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-news-joe-buck-decision-call-yankees-brewers-opening-day-game">Opening Day against the Milwaukee Brewers</a> when he struck out seven in a 4-2 victory.</p><p>He is coming off a solid season for New York in 2024. He racked up 16 wins with a 3.96 ERA and 1.22 WHIP. That was a vast improvement after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/yankees-news-new-york-optimistic-about-bounce-back-campaign-carlos-rodon-2024">Rodon failed to live up to expectations</a> in 2023.</p><p>The 6’2” lefty was coming off back-to-back sensational seasons in 2021 and 2022 with the Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants, respectively.</p><p>That led to the Yankees signing Rodon to a six-year, $162 million contract.</p><p>Amid the likely season-ending injury for Gerrit Cole atop New York’s rotation, Carlos Rodon is going to be counted on heavily this season. If the Yankees have desires on reaching the World Series again in 2025, they are going to need Rodon to turn back the clock a few years.</p><p>At least for now, he is healthy and pitching well.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-yankees-match-mlb-record-with-another-slugfest-vs-brewers">Yankees have gotten off to a blistering start</a> on offense in their first four games. And the 22-year-old outfielder has contributed to that start. However, Boone has decided to sub Dominguez out for Trent Grisham in three of these four contests.</p><p>In a postgame interview, Boone <a href="https://x.com/snyyankees/status/1907526953919279563" rel="noopener">detailed why</a> this will be the approach for the Yankees for the foreseeable future.</p><p>“I think it’s an important part of the process, making sure Jasson continues to develop in the best possible way. And I’m putting Trent Grisham in for him too who’s a really good player, and I feel like playing at a really high level right now.</p><p>Through his first several games he’s given us a lot of quality at-bats so there’s a little bit of that and over time I feel like I won’t do that. Because I do feel like he’s going to get to a point where he continues to develop, he continues to get more comfortable with reps out there to where my expectation is that he becomes an outstanding defensive left fielder. Jasson Dominguez, Anthony Volpe, Austin Wells, and Ben Rice are all starting daily and are 26 years old or younger. Dominguez <a href="https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects/yankees/" rel="noopener">was considered</a> the Yankees’ top prospect going into 2025, and so far at the plate, it’s not a surprise why. However, the 22-year-old is still a work in progress from the outfield. Trent Grisham, on the other hand, is a more established fielder than Dominguez.</p><p>With all that said, this is a questionable decision by Boone for two reasons. One, reps in high-leverage situations are only going to make Dominguez better in these moments later in the year. And two, Dominguez is missing late-inning at-bats where he is a superior hitter to Grisham. Boone believes that this approach is just part of the young outfielder’s development. Gerrit Cole is out for the season, recovering from Tommy John surgery, and Luis Gil is out with a lat strain. He’ll start this weekend with [Yankees AA affiliate] Somerset in Hartford, and then he’ll have one more, and then plan will be with us.”</p><p>This is huge for the Yankees, who are running a four-man rotation to start the season. After rookie Will Warren pitched well against the Arizona Diamondbacks, they are back to Carlos Rodon on Wednesday. Carlos Carrasco is on the roster but has been used out of the bullpen in the early going. Based on the schedule, he will have to make a start before Schmidt comes back.</p><p>The Yankees need great starting pitching to compete in a crowded American League. The pitching was solid in all three games, but the defense had hiccups that reminded fans of last season.</p><p>Last year, Aaron Judge hit his fourth home run in the 25th game of the season. He already has four after a three-homer game on Saturday. Anthony Volpe already has three homers after hitting only 12 last season. The offense looks alive, even with Juan Soto across town with the Mets, and it could lead to a great season for the Yankees.</p><p>But the pitching will have to shine for the Yankees to go anywhere this season. The Baltimore Orioles have slugged to start the season and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-alex-cora-defiant-take-rafael-devers-historic-strikeout-rate">Rafael Devers won’t go hitless for the entire season</a>. Even the Toronto Blue Jays and Tampa Bay Rays have started the season on the right foot. On <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/betting/diamondbacks-vs-yankees-prediction-odds-pick-4-1-2025">Tuesday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks</a>, the Bronx Bombers lived up to their nickname again, as outfielder Jasson Dominguez and shortstop Anthony Volpe each hit a home run in the third and fourth innings to help New York <a href="https://x.com/MLB/status/1907228010790498511" rel="noopener">break an MLB record</a>.</p><p>“The@Yankees17 home runs breaks a MLB record for most through a team’s first four games (16, 2006 Tigers),” the MLB shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday following Volpe’s dinger off of Diamondbacks starter Corbin Burnes, who also gave up Dominguez’s blast.</p><p>Dominguez’s solo home run sliced the Diamondbacks’ lead in half, as he battled for three pitches against Burnes before taking the pitcher’s 93 MPH cutter deep for a 377-foot blast. It was the same pitch that Volpe hit to send the ball 418 feet deep for a solo home run.</p><p>It has been an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-jazz-chisholm-jr-idiots-complaining-new-bats">incredible performance at the plate for the Yankees</a> to start the new campaign. They have been belting home runs left and right with four New York players already hitting multiple home runs for the team at the time of this writing. Aaron Judge leads the Yankees with four home runs while Jazz Chisholm and Austin Wells have three each. But the attention was placed on the<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/yankees-news-jazz-chisholm-jr-s-torpedo-bat-explanation-hilarious-donovan-mitchell-response"> torpedo bats that Paul Goldschmidt, Anthony Volpe, Jazz Chisholm Jr, and Austin Wells are using</a>. The Yankees were without Giancarlo Stanton as he nurses elbow injuries, and rumors surfaced that those injuries were caused by the torpedo bats. He<a href="https://x.com/BryanHoch/status/1907167803519410671" rel="noopener"> was asked about that</a> on Tuesday, per MLB.com reporter Bryan Hoch.</p><p>“Giancarlo Stanton was asked if torpedo bats were the ‘bat adjustments’ he said may have contributed to his elbow injuries,” Hoch reported. “‘You’re not going to get the story you’re looking for, so if that’s what you guys want, that isn’t going to happen.’ Stanton said he will use a torpedo bat when he returns from the IL.”</p><p>Stanton used the torpedo bat throughout last season and his remarkable playoff run. But he came to spring training with issues in both elbows that he blamed on swing changes. The Yankees placed him on the injured list, but he is already swinging and hoping to return soon.</p><p>The Yankees hit more home runs in Saturday’s game than in any game in franchise history. Their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-yankees-match-mlb-record-with-another-slugfest-vs-brewers">nine-homer game started with three bombs in three pitches off of former teammate Nestor Cortes Jr</a>.. Even with their bad defense from last year coming back in points, it was too much for Milwaukee to overcome. Torpedo bats became part of the lexicon after that game.</p><p>The Yankees continue their homestand on Tuesday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Stanton won’t be back for that series or anytime in the coming week. He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The New York Yankees, and specifically <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-jazz-chisholm-jr-idiots-complaining-new-bats">Jazz Chisholm Jr. garnered a lot of attention</a> over the weekend for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankeesjazz-chisholms-glowing-torpedo-bat-review-amid-yankees-controversy">their use of ‘torpedo bats’</a> and the offensive explosion against the Milwaukee Brewers, which caused him to take to X, formerly known as Twitter, <a href="https://x.com/j_chisholm3/status/1906741282786926882" rel="noopener">and explain the intended design</a> of the bats.</p><p>This also drew a response from Cleveland Cavaliers star and New York Mets fan Donovan Mitchell.</p><p>“Okay explanation the barrel is bigger and within mlb regulation! For the idiots that say it’s moved to the label you’re an idiot! Nobody is trying to get jammed you just move the wood from the parts you don’t use to the parts you do! You’re welcome no more stress for y’all!” Chisholm wrote on X.</p><p>Mitchell, <a href="https://x.com/spidadmitchell/status/1907120325529096533" rel="noopener">playfully responded</a> on X, saying that Chisholm and the Yankees should be suspended for the season.</p><p>“Naa yall are cheating and should be suspended for the season 😂😂😂” Mitchell wrote on X.</p><p>This is obviously in some kind of joking manner from Mitchell. The Yankees are not the only team using the torpedo bats. For example, Mets star Francisco Lindor is one player who is utilizing it, among other players around the league. The use of these bats will likely only increase in the coming weeks and months.</p><p>Cincinnati Reds star Elly De La Cruz utilized the bat for the first time on Monday, and he went 4-for-5 with two home runs in the game against the Texas Rangers. It will be interesting to monitor how he and others around the league perform in the coming days and weeks.</p><p>Chisholm and the Yankees will be tested on Tuesday, as they will face the Arizona Diamondbacks with Corbin Burnes on the mound.
