General manager AJ Preller has certainly been aggressive in upgrading the squad, and this was the case earlier this year as well when he traded one of the consensus best prospects in MLB, Leo de Vries, to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-mason-miller-said-throwing-104-5-mph-cubs">bring Mason Miller in</a>, the hard-throwing shutdown reliever, to prepare for a postseason push come October.</p><p>Alas, the Padres will now have to watch the rest of the playoffs from the couch after they were bounced from postseason contention on Thursday night following a 3-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs in Game 3 of their NL Wild Card series matchup. It was a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-manny-machado-names-culprit-san-diego-postseason">struggle for the Padres to score</a> all series long, and it did not help that one of the players they expected to produce, Fernando Tatis Jr., was invisible for most of the series.</p><p>Following last year’s playoff run wherein Tatis was at the top of his game and was actually on the cusp of leading the Padres past their division rival Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, him <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/mlb/ask/fernando-tatis-jr.-2025-postseason-stats" rel="noopener">going 1-12</a> with one walk (.237 OPS) against the Cubs is nothing short of a disaster. This has caused unceasing frustration for the 26-year-old slugger, who couldn’t hide his disappointment with himself and his team following another early playoff exit.</p><p>“Just the wrong approach. Wrong approach from the plate. Definitely bad timing for it,” Tatis said in a locker room interview following the Padres’ loss, via Marty Caswell of The Sporting Tribune. “[We need to] hit. This year, however, the Padres did not even make it past the NL Wild Card series, with the Chicago Cubs sealing the deal on Thursday night with a 3-1 win. While winning 90 games in the regular season is nothing to scoff at, this Padres team is built to win now especially after they’ve given away plenty of their top prospects over the years to supplement their Fernando Tatis Jr.-led core.</p><p>Alas, Tatis himself has a lot of ruminating to do after not exactly being at his best especially during the Padres’ two defeats to the Cubs that led to the end of their season. In Games 1 and 3 (when the Padres scored a combined one run), Tatis went blank from the plate, going 0-8 cumulatively and failing to set the table for a San Diego team that badly needed a jolt of offense in such a short series.</p><p>Considering how well Tatis has performed in the postseason in the past, these stinkers are very hard to ignore, especially when they came at such a crucial juncture of the season. The Padres’ 2025 campaign is now over and they have nothing to show for it but one postseason win, and Tatis bears responsibility for that since he’s one of the team’s best players. As a result, he’s being clowned all around on social media for his no-show against the Cubs.</p><p>“I didn’t think it was possible, but Fernando Tatis Jr. showed up less in the Wild Card than he has in his daughter’s life,” X user @terpycal <a href="https://x.com/terpycal/status/1973913265874022449" rel="noopener">wrote harshly</a>.</p><p>“There is no heart in Tatis, trade him!!” @ChrisReyes8 <a href="https://x.com/ChrisReyes8/status/1973939537236943234" rel="noopener">added</a>.</p><p>“Tatis doesn’t even know who he is. Nevertheless, in a three-game series, anything can happen, and the Padres certainly got the short end of the stick considering they were the road team in all three games.</p><p>But they have the position player core to mount another postseason push, and they have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-mason-miller-said-throwing-104-5-mph-cubs">one of the best bullpens</a> in baseball. Tatis has been one of the club’s leaders on offense. This season, he is hitting at a .266 batting average. The slugger also has 24 home runs and 70 RBIs.</p><p>Tatis was <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46394362/tatis-returns-covid-bout-powers-padres-grand-slam" rel="noopener">out of the club’s lineup recently</a> due to contracting COVID.</p><p>“I feel way better today, and I’m looking forward to feeling even better in the next couple of days,” Tatis said after hitting his fourth career grand slam, per the Associated Press.</p><p>The Padres star was upset he had to miss the clubhouse celebration, after the team clinched a playoff spot.</p><p>“It’s definitely hard watching from home,” Tatis said. “We’ve played for this all year, so [I] definitely was looking forward to that celebration. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-manny-machado-facetime-sick-fernando-tatis-jr-celebration">Padres clinched a postseason berth</a> earlier this week with a win against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Diamondbacks are two games back of the New York Mets for the final Wild Card spot and need to likely sweep the Friars to make it.</p><p>This weekend will be fun to watch to see who makes the postseason in both the NL and AL.</p><p>The Padres are getting back star outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. for the final three games. He has been dealing with an undisclosed illness all week. Tatis missed the series against the Brewers and will hope to stay hot before the Wild Card series against the Chicago Cubs.</p><p>Tatis Jr. <a href="https://x.com/padres/status/1971686757000532329?s=46" rel="noopener">returns to the leadoff spot</a>.</p><p>The star outfielder is having a dominant season with his glove. He has robbed more home runs than anyone in the league, and that might reward him with his second Platinum Glove. Offensively, Tatis Jr. is hitting 2.67 with an .805 OPS. He has really picked it up as of late in slugging. His WAR is at the second-highest of his career at 5.6 while hitting 23 home runs and driving in only 66 RBIs, which is shockingly the third most of his career. When healthy, there is no doubt that Tatis Jr. is one of the best players on the planet.</p><p>His 88 walks this season are the most of his career in one season by 26. His vision has improved a ton. The best news of all is that he has played the most games in a season of his career at 152, and that is important. The Padres need him healthy to be at their best. San Diego accomplished that feat following a 5-4 victory Monday over the Milwaukee Brewers. Padres star Manny Machado celebrated in the clubhouse afterward and got all his teammates in on the celebration.</p><p>Machado used FaceTime to get Fernando Tatis on the phone and involved in the party. But we’ve got heart,” Machado said afterward about his team, per the Associated Press. “Everybody wants it. It’s always a challenge. Baseball’s a challenge. It’s hard.”</p><p>The winning hit in the Padres-Brewers game came from one of San Diego’s newest players. Freddy Fermin was acquired at the July 31 trade deadline from the Kansas City Royals.</p><p>“I believe with this staff we have, we are going to the World Series,” Fermin said. “It is very special, this moment. I don’t have words for this moment. Very special. First step, we’ve got to keep rolling this.”</p><p>The Padres are 86-71 on the season. San Diego is second in the National League West as they trail the Los Angeles Dodgers by 2½ games. There’s still time for the Padres to slide into first, but the club needs help from L.A.</p><h2><b>Padres have had a fantastic season so far</b></h2><p>San Diego has used a balance of great pitching and hitting to earn their postseason berth. The Padres are 6-4 in their last 10 games.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/san-diego-padres/padres-news-manny-machado-fall-baseball-beating-mets">Machado is having a great season</a> for the club. He is hitting .274 this season with 26 home runs. He has also batted in 93 runs for his team. Machado is seen as a leader in the team’s clubhouse.</p><p>Tatis gives the offense even more firepower. The slugger has 23 home runs this campaign for San Diego. Tatis is hitting .267 and has posted 66 RBIs.
