At the same time, they were treated to a masterful performance by Framber Valdez. He threw a no-hitter, making him the first Houston pitcher to throw one by himself since Verlander in 2019.</p><p>Valdez carved up the Cleveland Guardians in just 93 pitches, the third-fewest in such a performance since 1988, in the Astros’ 2-0 win. He struck out seven batters, allowed just one walk to Oscar Gonzalez and said after the game that he <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/38117698/astros-framber-valdez-blanks-guardians-mlb-3rd-no-hitter" rel="noopener">had everything working</a> against the Guardians, according to ESPN.</p><p>“All my pitches felt that they were working today. I was able to throw strikes and I threw strikes without any fear tonight,” Valdez said through an interpreter, via ESPN.</p><p>Framber Valdez’s gem of a game <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-framber-valdezs-no-hitter-to-welcome-justin-verlander-back-has-twitter-going-bonkers" rel="noopener">pumped up fans</a> as the Astros find themselves in a tight race for the AL West with the Texas Rangers. He pitched a clunker in his previous outing but bounced back to help Houston pick up a massive victory, which may not have happened if not for his excellent pitching. Kyle Tucker’s two-RBI single in the third inning was the only instance where they took advantage of runners in scoring position.</p><p>“I just went out there and tried to do the best that I could,” Valdez said after the Astros’ win, via ESPN. “Just tried to go out there being very positive. When I got to the seventh inning, I thought to myself, ‘OK, I think I can finish this game without any hits.’ Got to the eighth inning, I still felt good, I felt like it was still the first inning. So I kept attacking the hitters, trying to do my best out there.”</p><p>The Astros have gotten another All-Star season from Valdez but still needed a boost to help them contend better. Verlander, who has been strong with the Mets before being traded, should reinvigorate the rotation. Well, the Houston Astros starting pitcher did a little better than that,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-framber-valdezs-no-hitter-to-welcome-justin-verlander-back-has-twitter-going-bonkers" rel="noopener"> throwing a no-hitter</a> against the Cleveland Guardians Tuesday night.</p><p>The home crowd at Minute Maid Park witnessed the two-time All-Star achieve some <a href="https://twitter.com/ESPNStatsInfo/status/1686562727114817536" rel="noopener">incredible history</a> while willing the Astros to a 2-0 victory. Valdez needed only 93 pitches to get the job done, the fewest since New York Yankees’ David Cone threw 88 in his perfect game versus the Montreal Expos in 1999, per ESPN Stats &amp; Info.</p><p>That’s right, the last time such a dominant and efficient outing took place, it was against a team that technically does not even exist anymore. Moreover, Valdez is the franchise’s first left-hander to ever record a no-hitter. The 29-year-old struck out seven while walking just one batter. Following his recent scuffles, he inserts himself right back into contention for American League Cy Young.</p><p>The historic night comes after the Astros’ huge day at the MLB trade deadline. They traded two outfield prospects to the New York Mets for top pitcher and old friend Justin Verlander. After almost eight months away, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/astros-news-dusty-baker-jose-altuve-immediate-reactions-to-justin-verlander-trade" rel="noopener">nine-time All-Star returns</a> to the club he helped win two World Series championships. OMG I’M SHAKING.”</p><p>Valdez’s no-hitter also underscores the brutal reality of the Guardians when it comes to the pitching feat.</p><p>“The Guardians haven’t thrown a no-hitter since May 15, 1981, the longest drought in the league. However, after an  Houston Astros ace Framber Valdez’s decision, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blue-jays-vladimir-guerrero-jr-2023-home-run-derby" rel="noopener">Blue Jays will add</a> another All-Star to the mix.</p><p>Toronto closer Jordan Romano <a href="https://twitter.com/BNightengale/status/1678075784404307968" rel="noopener">has been named</a> Valdez’s All-Star replacement, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Valdez was not going to throw in the All-Star Game as he pitched on Saturday.</p><p>When the AL All-Star roster came out, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, Whit Merrifield and Kevin Gausman all earned nominations. Gausman ended up opting out of the midsummer classic. With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blue-jays-news-jordan-romano-gets-real-on-crushing-playoff-collapse-vs-mariners" rel="noopener">Romano now getting</a> the call, the Blue Jays are back up to four All-Stars.</p><p>This will be the second-straight All-Star nomination for Romano after getting the call last year. This year, the closer holds a 2.95 ERA and a 47/11 K/BB ratio. He has converted 25 saves, which ranks tied for second in the MLB.</p><p>While Romano’s ERA might be a little bloated, the closer is on pace to shatter numerous career-highs. To this point, the most saves Romano converted in a season was 36. His highest strikeout total was 85. Over halfway there in both categories, the closer will look to finish out the second half strong.</p><p>Which will be crucial for Toronto’s playoff chances. Currently 49-41, the Blue Jays are nine games back of the Tampa Bay Rays for the AL East. However, they are right in the thick of the Wild Card race.</p><p>To ensure their postseason placement, the Blue Jays need Romano to be at the top of his game. His All-Star nomination should help light a fire under the closer as he prepares for the second half.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
