They shipped off <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-news-reds-royals-swing-brady-singer-jonathan-india-trade">Jonathan India to the Kansas City Royals</a> for starting pitcher Brady Singer. Following that, they added Gavin Lux in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lux spoke with MLB.com <a href="https://www.mlb.com/video/terry-francona-gavin-lux-on-joining-reds" rel="noopener">about his expectations</a> heading into 2025.</p><p>“As these guys all know, you go through ups and downs where you think you figure it out and you lose it again and then you figure it out again. You’re just trying to figure out, day-to-day, what’s going to work for you and your baseline and your foundation of who you are as a baseball player. And you always try and go back to those roots that work for you,” the new Reds addition said.</p><p>He continued, “Getting a chance to do it here, in a good place to hit, with a lot of other really good hitters around you too, it’s going to be fun. We all just keep saying we just want to win games and play winning baseball. And at the end of the day, that’s what matters most.”</p><p>The Reds have a plethora of infielders rising through their prospect ranks. Lux should get a lot of playing time and will be important to their lineup.</p><h2><b>The Reds need Gavin Lux to be an offensive star</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Gavin-Lux-with-LA-Dodgers-1.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Lux is primarily a second baseman, making him an obvious replacement for Jonathan India. But he can play shortstop and outfield, which the Reds need this offseason. The Major League <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/cincinnati-reds/yearly" rel="noopener">outfielders under contract</a> right now are Will Benson, TJ Freidl, and Spencer Steer. Matt McLain, Jeimer Candelario, Santiago Espinal, Cooper Bowman, and Noelvi Marte could all play second or third.</p><p>Lux should be a utility player for the Reds who plugs defensive holes while focusing on offense. He struggled at second base last year, necessitating a Mookie Betts move to the infield. He picked it up down the stretch and got his final numbers into the right place, a 101 OPS+.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/reds-news-cincinnati-fires-david-bell-interim-named">Reds were mediocre last season</a>, finishing 16th in runs scored, 18th in team ERA, and 23rd in overall record. Adding an offensive talent like Lux should have a positive impact on the team. The defending World Series champions will get a draft pick and prospect Mike Sirota in return.</p><p>Via Jeff Passan:</p><p>“Full trade, per ESPN sources: Cincinnati receives infielder Gavin Lux. Los Angeles Dodgers receive a Competitive Balance Round A pick (around No. 37) and outfield prospect Mike Sirota.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-how-shohei-ohtani-played-into-signing-hyeseong-kim">The Dodgers just recently signed Korean sensation Hyeseong Kim</a> to a three-year deal, which essentially paved the way for Lux to be moved. However, the Reds do have a lot of infielders on their roster, which makes this trade a tad confusing. That being said, Lux is still a decent player who was once one of the top prospects in baseball.</p><p>Last season, Lux hit .251 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI in 139 games. Kim is supposed to be a very special player though and as soon as Los Angeles signed him, it almost signaled that Lux’s time with the Dodgers would be coming to an end. The New York Yankees were also showing trade interest in the 27-year-old.</p><p>The Reds will be hoping a fresh start for Lux could bring out the best in him. He slashed just .252 in five big league seasons with the Dodgers, smacking only 28 home runs during that span. Aside from his inconsistencies both offensively and defensively, Lux missed the entire 2023 campaign after tearing his ACL.</p><p>That injury was a real bummer for Lux because he was set to be LA’s starting shortstop that year. Aside from Kim’s arrival, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-dodgers-agree-74-million-contract-tommy-edman-blake-snell-deal">Tommy Edman signed a new extension</a> and Mookie Betts will play infield again in 2025. The Dodgers simply have too many infielders and Lux is the odd man out.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-news-reds-royals-swing-brady-singer-jonathan-india-trade">The Reds did already move Jonathan India</a> so acquiring Lux isn’t the worst move. But with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-yankees-eye-gavin-lux-trade-dodgers-mainers-catch">rumors flying about Gavin Lux</a> and Luis Arraez, manager Aaron Boone has <a href="https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/dj-lemahieu-bounce-back-yankees-2025" rel="noopener">given a vote of confidence</a> to his veteran second baseman, DJ LeMahieu.</p><p>LeMahieu was ineffective in 67 games played for the Yankees in 2024, hitting for a 51 OPS+ with -1.6 bWAR. Since winning the American League batting title in the abbreviated 2020 season, LeMahieu’s production has plummeted with just one season with an above-average OPS+.</p><p>“He got a lot healthier by the end of the season. He was working, so I’m still not going to be surprised if DJ hits on some level for us,” Boone told Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. “Again, it comes down to health. It comes down to, can he maintain that health to allow him to put out his at-bat, his approach, his swing?”</p><p>But LeMahieu is 36 years old and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-manager-aaron-boones-dj-lemahieu-stance-sparks-fan-outrage">hasn’t given fans much reason</a> over the last few years to have faith in him. The Yankees are saddled to his $15 million per year contract for two more seasons, so Boone’s talk may be nothing more than baseless optimism.</p><p>“I feel really good about where he was at the very end of the season physically,” Boone added. “Now, can he maintain that and improve upon that in the winter and really put himself in the mix heading into Spring Training? I would never cross off a player of his caliber, even though it’s been obviously a tough couple of years.”</p><h2><b>The Yankees could pursue Luis Arraez or Gavin Lux</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Luis-Arraez-Padres.jpg"><figcaption>Kiyoshi Mio-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Going into Opening Day expecting LeMahieu to start 140 games next season is probably a recipe for disappointment for the Yankees. So, naturally, they’re looking at other options. ESPN’s Jeff Passan <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/43261112/teams-winning-mlb-offseason-need-move-dodgers-yankees-mets-braves" rel="noopener">noted that they have looked</a> into <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-yankees-eyeing-luis-arrraez-trade-with-padres-amid-gavin-lux-buzz">trades for Arraez</a> of the San Diego Padres and Lux of the Los Angeles Dodgers.</p><p>Jazz Chisholm being able to play second, third or the outfield gives the Yankees some flexibility. Both Arraez and Lux would slide into second base, likely sending Chisholm to third and allowing the Yankees to only have to deploy LeMahieu in a utility role.</p><p>Arraez is a three-time batting champion and perfect leadoff hitter, but he’ll hit free agency next year and isn’t a great fielder. As for Lux, he has the upside of a better all-around player, but also has a career 96 OPS+ and missed all of 2023 with an injury. He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MLB</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The New York Yankees got right to work after losing Juan Soto to the New York Mets, signing starting pitcher Max Fried, trading for closer Devin Williams from the Milwaukee Brewers and reliever Fernando Cruz from the Cincinnati Reds, while <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/yankees-news-paul-goldschmidt-real-joining-force-aaron-judge">also signing Paul Goldschmidt</a> to replace Anthony Rizzo at first base. However, the Yankees <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/insider/story/_/id/43261112/teams-winning-mlb-offseason-need-move-dodgers-yankees-mets-braves" rel="noopener">are still not done,</a> as ESPN’s Jeff</p><p>“The Yankees are unquestionably a deeper team — and they’re not done, either,” Jeff Passan said. “They’ve continued to discuss Luis Arraez with San Diego and inquired about Gavin Lux, whom the Dodgers could trade, to fill their open second-base slot. When the contract demands for relief pitching drop, the Yankees could dabble there, too.”</p><p>When looking at the Yankees’ roster, it is not a surprise to see that they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-yankees-eye-gavin-lux-trade-dodgers-mainers-catch">have been engaged with both Gavin Lux</a> and Luis Arraez. Currently, Jazz Chisholm Jr. is going to take up either the second or third base spot, while Oswaldo Cabrera or Oswald Peraza would take up the other. An upgrade could be had at either of the two spots, with Chisholm playing at the position where an upgrade is not acquired. Both Lux and Arraez fit that bill.</p><p>The Yankees previously had been mentioned with Lux, but there are rumors that the Seattle Mariners have checked in as well with the Los Angeles Dodgers regarding acquiring the infielder. It is unknown how realistic a trade for Lux is for the Yankees.</p><p>Arraez might be more attainable for New York, and while he does bring lackluster fielding and base running skills that were part of why Gleyber Torres was let go, he would be a fit for the leadoff role. It is not a perfect fit, but it would likely be an upgrade over playing Cabrera or Peraza at second base.</p><p>As for the bullpen, the Yankees have a clear need for a left-handed reliever, so it is not a surprise to see Passan note that they could make an addition there when the prices come down. Tim Hill, who found success with New York last season could be a fit, along with Andrew Chafin. Their recent <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/dodgers-news-bolster-infield-with-intriguing-kbo-signing">signing of Hye-seong Kim from the KBO </a>increased their infielder surplus and put Gavin Lux on the trade block. The New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners <a href="https://x.com/ragazzoreport/status/1875947131179270478" rel="noopener">have interest, according to</a> Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated.</p><p>“…the Yankees have shown some interest in a potential trade for Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Gavin Lux. However, sources say the Yankees expressed interest in Lux several weeks ago and the Seattle Mariners have been more aggressive in pursuit of the infielder,” Ragazzo reported.</p><p>The Mariners had the second-worst team batting average in baseball last year. Their infield has some solid players but they need a first baseman and could make some defensive adjustments if they landed Lux. With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-news-cubs-astros-both-earn-praise-for-kyle-tucker-trade">Astros taking a step back by losing Kyle Tucker</a> and likely Alex Bregman, the AL West could be theirs for the taking.</p><p>But the Yankees should be as involved as the Mariners in the Gavin Lux chase. They have Jazz Chisholm Jr. on the team, who could play either third or second base. Even though second base is his natural position, he could stay at third if they were to bring in a solid second baseman like Lux. The Yankees need improved defense and Lux would provide that.</p><h2><b>Are the Yankees or Mariners a better fit for Gavin Lux?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Gavin-Lux-with-LA-Dodgers.jpg"><figcaption>Robert Deutsch-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Dodgers should trade Lux this offseason, whether it is to the Yankees, Mariners, or someone else. They have a ton of infielders and need a place to ensure Mookie Betts gets in the lineup. Their depth is the strong point of their team but they can also improve their prospect pipeline by trading some of it.</p><p>The Yankees would be the best fit for Gavin Lux this offseason. While the two teams did play in the World Series, the Dodgers should not worry about helping New York get better. They need a solid infielder to improve their defense after the embarrassing World Series performance. While Lux is not a great defender, he is an improvement over Gleyber Torres.</p><p>While the Mariners could use Lux in their lineup, there are better options to fix their offensive woes. The biggest name of the group is Pete Alonso, the slugging first baseman still available in free agency.
