Team captain Aaron Judge and the other outfielders usually slot in at DH on their days off if there’s a matchup that manager Aaron Boone prefers. The former MVP had been sidelined all year with injuries to both elbows. But Stanton worked his way back and enjoyed a <a href="https://x.com/jorgecastillo/status/1934764651407139076" rel="noopener">memorable return</a> to the Yankees’ lineup.</p><p>The 15th-year veteran picked up his first base hit of the 2025 season in his first game back from injury, smoking a single that came off his bat at a scorching 111.1 mph, per ESPN’s Jorge Castillo on X.</p><p>Facing Angels starter Jose Soriano in the fourth inning, Stanton battled during an eight-pitch at-bat before driving a 97 mph sinker to left for a single. It was his first hit since homering in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.</p><h2><b>The Yankees missed Giancarlo Stanton’s bat</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Giancarlo-Stanton-2.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Yankees have missed Stanton’s bat in the middle of the order. After coming up big during New York’s playoff run last year, the 35-year-old slugger <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-giancarlo-stanton-to-begin-season-on-injured-list">began the 2025 season on the injured list</a>. He was suffering from ailments in both elbows and was shut down.</p><p>The Yankees brought the five-time All-Star along slowly and he was finally able to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-giancarlo-stanton-taking-swings-injury-return">take batting practice swings</a> in late April. But despite that step in his recovery process, there was still a great deal of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-boone-giancarlo-stanton-injury">uncertainty surrounding his return</a> from the injuries.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-giancarlo-stanton-swing-double-a-rehab-assignment">Stanton was finally cleared for a rehab assignment</a> in Double-A earlier this month and, after performing well in the minors, he was ready for his Yankees debut.</p><p>Stanton’s return to the lineup comes as New York faces a bit of adversity. Despite leading the division virtually all season, the Yankees have lost three straight games entering Monday’s contest with the Angels. The team was swept by the Red Sox in Boston as the Yankees’ bats have gone cold.</p><p>New York is hoping Stanton can spark the offense. However, Monday’s game has been more of the same as the Yankees and Angels are locked in a pitcher’s duel. Soriano threw seven shutout innings while New York starter Clarke Schmidt contributed 7.2 scoreless frames. With the oft-injured former MVP back in the fold, the Yankees have another bona fide home run threat in a lineup that already includes league home run leader Aaron Judge.</p><p>Stanton’s return will come after a three-game rehab stretch with Double-A Somerset. He went 3-11 in that time with a double and four RBI.</p><p>Stanton is coming off a solid 2024 season that became a scorching postseason. The 2024 ALCS MVP lit up the Cleveland Guardians with four home runs in five games as the Yankees reached the World Series for the first time since 2009.</p><p>He also hit 27 home runs during the regular season, where he played 114 games — his most since 2021. Now 35, Stanton has been relegated to full-time designated hitter status as injuries have kept him from being the consistent All-Star he was earlier in his career.</p><p>That doesn’t mean Stanton can’t still show flashes of being one of the best hitters on Earth, which he was during his time with the Miami Marlins. He still owns the second, third, sixth and seventh spots on MLB’s list of hardest-hit home runs in the Statcast era, with No. 6 coming last season against the Houston Astros.</p><p>The Yankees and Angels will get underway at 7:05 p.m. The team has yet to officially announce Stanton’s return, but he should be in the lineup. After making the World Series last season, Aaron Boone’s team is in the middle of another great season. Things are about to get even better in New York, though. Boone confirmed that the team expects Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton to make his season debut against the Los Angeles Angels next week. He did not expand on <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-ben-rice-giancarlo-stanton-return-lineup-plan">how Stanton’s return affects players like Ben Rice</a>, but fans are excited.</p><p>Stanton comes with his pros and cons, but New York would much rather be with him than without. The former National League MVP was the Yankees’ best hitter during their run to the World Series in 2024. He and Aaron Judge form one of the most intimidating duos in the league when both are healthy. Unfortunately, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-aaron-boone-giancarlo-stanton-injury">elbow injuries have held Stanton back since spring training</a>.</p><p>Stanton will have an opportunity <a href="https://x.com/BryanHoch/status/1933995073680585056" rel="noopener">to make an impact</a> against the Angels next week, according to MLB writer Bryan Hoch. New York still holds a sizable lead in the AL East, but inconsistency has crept in over the past couple of weeks. Stanton’s return will provide Boone with a powerful bat to put at the cleanup spot in his order. The slugger’s power is not on the same level as the Yankees’ captain this season, but he is still capable of finishing the season with 20 home runs despite a late start.</p><p>Boone will be happy to have Stanton back on his active roster. However, the series against the Angels will give fans a look at how the manager plans to use him, Rice, and Paul Goldschmidt. Stanton will likely remain at his familiar position as the Yankees’ DH. That leaves Rice and Goldschmidt to compete for at-bats at first base.</p><p>Boone has a tough decision in front of him, but having too much talent is a great problem to have. The organization trusts him to find a way to get the most out of his roster. He does have some catcher in his background… slugging close to .500.
