That trend continued in the Cardinals’ latest loss to the Houston Astros, in which they gave up five runs in the eighth inning to go from up 7-5 to down 10-7, which was the final score of the game. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-giovanny-gallegos-return-lars-nootbaar-il/" rel="noopener">main culprit</a> in this loss was Giovanny Gallegos.</p><p>Gallegos came on in the eighth inning looking to protect St. Louis’ two run lead, but ended up allowing five runs to come across the plate, with Jose Altuve’s three-run home run being the deciding blow. St. Louis would have had a chance to sweep the Astros on Thursday if they had won this game, which would have been a great momentum boost for them, but instead, they crumbled once again.</p><p>This is just another low-point in a season that has been full of them for St. Louis. However, given that they play in one of the worst divisions in the MLB, they still have time to turn things around. However, now that we are past the halfway mark of the campaign, that time is running out for the Cardinals, and they can’t afford many more crushing losses like this if they want to salvage their season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

C Willson Contreras, RP Giovanny Gallegos, and OF Lars Nootbaar are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-st-louis-gets-lars-nootbaar-giovanny-gallegos-injury-updates" rel="noopener">among the Cardinals players</a> who’ve missed time due to injury to open the season. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cardinals-news-willson-contreras-day-to-day-knee-injury" rel="noopener">Contreras returned to action</a> on Sunday, while Gallegos <a href="https://twitter.com/katiejwoo/status/1642997981614858247" rel="noopener">is expected to return</a> Monday against the Atlanta Braves, per <i>The Athletic’s</i> Katie Woo. Nootbaar, however, is facing a possible trip to the IL, per Woo as well.</p><p>“Regarding Lars Nootbaar: Today is important one for him in establishing progress. Cardinals can give him another day tomorrow with LHP Dodd pitching, but if Nootbaar requires more time, they could mull over an IL stint,” Woo wrote on Twitter.</p><p>Nootbaar is a steady prescence for the Cardinals. He isn’t the best player on the team, but he provides an element of versatility and depth for St. Louis. In 2022, Nootbaar slashed .228/.340/.448 with a .788 OPS and 14 home runs.</p><p>Gallegos, meanwhile, is one of the better relievers in the league. Over 57 games during the 2022 campaign, the Cardinals’ right-hander recorded a 3.05 ERA and 14 saves.</p><p>The Cardinals have the potential to be a force in the National League in 2023. They will need to find a way to avoid the injury bug on a more consistent basis moving forward. The fact that injuries have already been one of their primary storylines isn’t a tremendous sign.</p><p>With that being said, the Cardinals still performed well during opening weekend and will look to keep things going against the Braves.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He jammed his thumb sliding into a base in Thursday’s opener. Hope is he’s back Sunday,” wrote Woo.</p><p>“Giovanny Gallegos is also down today. An MRI yesterday came back clean, but the team is looking at Sunday as a ‘best-case scenario’ for Gio’s return.”</p><p>The good news for Cardinals fans is that neither absence seems to be any longer than day-to-day, with both players very possibly back in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale.</p><p>The Blue Jays won a thriller on Opening Day against the Cards on Thursday, defeating their out-of-league opponents 10-9 on the back of five hits from George Springer.</p><p>Tyler O’Neill tied a Major League Baseball record in the loss, hitting his fourth straight Opening Day home run. With the long ball, he entered the likes of Yogi Berra, Gary Carter and Todd Hundley with the two-run shot off of Alek Manoah in the third inning.</p><p>Cardinals’ 41-year-old right-hander Adam Wainwright stole the show before the game, singing the national anthem to the surprise of the 47,649 in attendance on Thursday night.</p><p>“Adam did a real nice job,” Cards manager Oliver Marmol said after the game.</p><p>Kevin Gausman is set to take the mound for Toronto on Saturday afternoon, while the Cardinals will counter with Jack Flaherty as the team looks to secure a win without Lars Nootbaar and Giovanny Gallegos. The deal comes ahead of the MLB playoffs and will allow the Cardinals and Gallegos to avoid arbitration in the offseason.</p><p>The Cardinals would not be where they are without Giovanny Gallegos’ contributions out of the bullpen. The right-hander owns a sparkling 2.91 ERA to go along with 14 saves and 12 holds. He’s been a versatile option for St. Louis in 2022, pitching in various important roles for the team.</p><p>Giovanny Gallegos is in the midst of his 4th full season in St. Louis. He technically made his Cardinals debut in 2018, but he emerged as a steady relief option in 2019 when he posted a 2.31 ERA over 66 games. He’s never posted an ERA above 3.60 in a single season with the Cardinals.</p><p>St. Louis’ decision to extend Giovanny Gallegos simply makes sense.</p><p>Overall, the Cardinals’ pitching staff is 9th in team ERA, 15th in WHIP and 4th in home runs allowed. Gallegos has been a big reason for their all-around success. The Cardinals’ bullpen has been especially crucial in 2022 when you consider the fact that ace Jack Flaherty missed a significant portion of the season due to injury.
