After spending the first seven seasons of his career with the New York Mets, it was reported that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-news-pete-alonso-history-155-million-deal">Alonso had decided to sign with the Baltimore Orioles</a> on a five-year, $155 million contract — a deal that would pay him an average of $31 million over the duration of that deal. But before Alonso signed with the Orioles, he had plenty of suitors, including another AL East team in the Boston Red Sox.</p><p>However, the Red Sox couldn’t really qualify as a serious suitor for Alonso in the end. According to Tim Healey of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox’s <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2025/12/10/sports/red-sox-pete-alonso-orioles/" rel="noopener">final offer</a> for the veteran first baseman was for “fewer years and significantly less money” than what the Orioles put on the table. This was because they were “wary” of his age and how badly the contract might age.</p><p>Considering the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-why-rafael-devers-trade-has-left-execs-confounded">Red Sox’s dealings in recent times</a>, their aversion to going all-out in their pursuit of Alonso, despite their need for a heavy hitter in the middle of the lineup, is not surprising. This was the team that traded Rafael Devers away in the early goings of his huge contract extension, after all.</p><p>Alonso is now 31 years of age, and he’s been remarkably consistent for his entire career, so perhaps the veteran first baseman would prove the Red Sox wrong now that they’re sharing the same division.</p><h2><b>Red Sox look for more power production</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/Rangers-shortstop-Corey-Seager-5-hits-a-two-run-home-run.jpg"><figcaption>© David Butler II-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Last season, Trevor Story led the Red Sox in home runs, with 25. Now, Red Sox fans will not be pleased when they hear the Alonso contract offer their favorite team made before <a href="https://x.com/timbhealey/status/1998834537271636174" rel="noopener">choosing to go</a> to a divisional rival, according to Red Sox beat writer Tim Healey.</p><p>“The Red Sox’ offer to Pete Alonso was for fewer years and significantly less money, sources said,” Healey wrote on X.</p><p>It’s a double blow for the Sox, as they lost out on one of the better hitters in baseball and watched him go to a divisional rival. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/baltimore-orioles/orioles-pete-alonso-contract-grades-155-million-deal">Alonso contract</a> he signed with the Orioles is for 5 years and $155 million. Ultimately, that means the Sox likely wanted three years at a maximum. Alonso was possibly looking for something long-term, and the O’s gave it to him.</p><p>Alonso has had a great career, batting .253 with 264 career home runs, 712 RBIs, and 580 runs with a .341 career on-base percentage. However, his 2025 season was one of his best, as he hit .272 with 38 home runs, 126 RBIs, and 87 runs with an on-base percentage of .347. Those numbers were enough to warrant a long-term contract with the O’s.</p><p>The<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-news-boston-2nd-visit-pete-alonso-winter-meetings"> Red Sox were in the running for Alonso,</a> but ultimately could not convince him to join them. While the sources have not given details of their contract offer, it clearly was shorter than Alonso wanted. Had the Red Sox been able to sign him, he would have joined a lineup that already includes Jarren Duran, Trevor Story, and Alex Bregman (assuming he re-signs).</p><p>While the Red Sox did have Nathaniel Lowe at first base, that did not stop them from extending an offer to Alonso. No, Red Sox fans will not be happy with the contract offer. Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso is a free agent, but New York is hesitating, which <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/pete-alonso-rumors-at-winter-meetings" rel="noopener">has opened the door</a> for the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles.</p><p>“The Red Sox and Orioles are both looking to add an impact power bat to their respective lineups, while the Mets have enjoyed the benefits of Alonso’s power for the past seven years,” MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand reported. “According to sources, Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns — who signed Alonso to a two-year, $54 million deal last February — may be hesitant to give the slugger a deal longer than three years.”</p><p>Feinsand continued, “If the Mets balk at the idea of a contract longer than three years, it could open the door for the Red Sox or Orioles to swipe Alonso away from the team that drafted him in the second round in 2016.”</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-mets/mets-news-pete-alonso-announces-opt-out-contract-enter-free-agency">Mets balked at the idea of a long-term deal for Alonso last offseason</a>. They signed him to a two-year deal with an opt-out after the 2025 season. He led the National League in doubles and racked up 126 RBIs in that year, putting him back in the free-agency pool.</p><p>With Kyle Schwarber off the board, Alonso is set up to be the next big contract off the board. His power numbers were not what Schwarber’s were last year, but his swing is perfect for the spot behind OBP king Juan Soto. The Mets have cleared money off the books with the Brandon Nimmo trade and by losing Diaz. Bringing back Alonso would put the front office back in the good graces of the fanbase. In fact, the Red Sox made it to the postseason and pushed their archrival New York Yankees to the brink during the AL Wild Card round, only to fall to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/new-york-yankees/yankees-news-cam-schlittler-ends-nys-drought-that-lasted-104-years">Cam Schlittler’s excellent Game 3 performance</a>.</p><p>With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-rumors-kyle-schwarber-reunion-sonny-gray-trade">Red Sox sensing an opportunity to compete for a World Series title</a> in 2026, they are busy hunting for upgrades to bolster the roster further. They were reportedly in on Kyle Schwarber before he re-signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, so they are indeed looking for ways to improve their offense that finished seventh last season in total runs scored.</p><p>And as per Tim Healey of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox are indeed <a href="https://www.bostonglobe.com/2025/12/09/sports/red-sox-trades/" rel="noopener">setting their sights on multiple</a> All-Star level infielders who could perhaps be made available via trade. Among those infielders they are targeting is Texas Rangers star Corey Seager.</p><p>Joining Seager on the Red Sox’s trade wish list are Ketel Marte, Isaac Paredes, and Brendan Donovan. Now, they are back in Orlando, courting one of the market’s top free agents. The MLB free agency stove is heating up, and the Red Sox are talking to Pete Alonso once again. Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com <a href="https://x.com/ChrisCotillo/status/1998509437456187627" rel="noopener">broke the news</a> on Tuesday.</p><p>“Red Sox have met with Pete Alonso on Zoom recently and are trying to schedule an in-person sit-down here in Orlando, we’ve heard. Person with knowledge of the bidding says it would be surprising for a deal (with any club) to come together by the end of the week but, as always, only takes one call,” Cotillo reported.</p><p>Alonso was a free agent last season, but did not get a long-term contract. That sent him back to the New York Mets on a deal with a player option after the 2025 season. He declined the option, landing back in the free-agent pool once again this year.</p><p>Alonso is a first baseman with decent defensive metrics but an elite power bat. That could land him in Boston as a Tristan Casas injury replacement and a designated hitter in certain games as well. His right-handed swing and the Green Monster could be a perfect fit.</p><p>But the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/mlb-stories/mlb-rumors-dodgers-join-edwin-diaz-sweepstakes-mets-blue-jays">Mets just lost Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers in free agency</a>, which could put Steve Cohen’s full attention on Alonso. Their collapse in September has already led to some huge changes, and losing another fan favorite could be disastrous for Cohen. Keeping Alonso would help the Mets get into the playoffs next year, but the Red Sox also have money to spend.</p><p>The Red Sox traded Rafael Devers last season, but Alex Bregman opted out of his contract. Colin is also a three-time NYSBA award winner and a proud graduate of Fordham University.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Arizona Diamondbacks</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The MLB offseason is in full swing, and one insider recently suggested that the Boston Red Sox could be interested in cutting a deal for a certain second baseman with postseason experience.</p><p>According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Red Sox are <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6874837/2025/12/09/mlb-trade-market-winter-meetings-ketel-marte/" rel="noopener">one of three teams</a> that are currently in on a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/arizona-diamondbacks/diamondbacks-rumors-what-arizona-is-looking-for-ketel-marte-trade">potential trade for Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star Ketel Marte.</a></p><p>“The Boston Red Sox are among the teams interested in Marte, according to sources briefed on the discussions. Three unidentified clubs are also said to be in the mix. “The Diamondbacks, who agreed Monday with right-hander Mike Soroka on a one-year, $7.5 million contract, are seeking young pitching as they await the returns of staff ace Corbin Burnes and relievers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez from Tommy John surgeries,” Rosenthal wrote.</p><p>“Trading Marte allows the Diamondbacks to clear payroll and inject talent. While they need not rush or move Marte at all, a deadline of sorts is in effect. After the tenth day of the 2026 season, Marte will gain full no-trade protection as a player with 10 years of service and five consecutive with the same club.”</p><p>Across 126 last season, Marte hit 28 home runs, collected 72 RBIs, and earned an .893 OPS. According to Baseball Savant, the 32-year-old ranked in the 95th percentile in Batting Run Value and the 96th percentile in xBA.</p><p>The Red Sox are coming off a season that saw them reach the playoffs for the first time since 2021. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/blue-jays-perfect-ketel-marte-trade-proposal-they-must-offer-diamondbacks">Adding a player of Marte’s stature</a> could help them inch closer towards becoming a true contender.</p><p>Marte was the 2023 NLCS MVP during Arizona’s run to the World Series, and it is worth wondering if he could potentially have a similar impact in Boston.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The ball club is reportedly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/boston-red-sox/red-sox-rumors-should-boston-pursue-alex-bregman-pete-alonso-free-agency">open to a reunion with third baseman Alex Bregman</a> as well. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Sox <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6874837/2025/12/09/mlb-trade-market-winter-meetings-ketel-marte/" rel="noopener">are also interested</a> in Houston Astros infielder Isaac Paredes.</p><p>Trading for Paredes would prove to be a difficult task, though. He’s a versatile 26-year-old who can play first base, third base and second base. A two-time All-Star, the Astros certainly value Paredes. Even if a long-term contract extension doesn’t come to fruition between Houston and Paredes, the Astros won’t be in a rush to trade him. The infielder is under team control through 2027.</p><p>Rosenthal wrote that Houston would be interested in either Payton Tolle or Connelly Early. The Red Sox have pitching depth, so it will be interesting to see if they would be open to moving either pitcher.</p><p>The Gray addition makes the idea of moving one of the young hurlers much more realistic. Without Gray, Boston’s rotation would have more question marks. With Gray and Crochet leading the way, and with pitchers such as Patrick Sandoval, Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford also on the roster, moving Early or Tolle to boost the offense is a possible move.</p><p>There are no guarantees that the Astros will even want to trade Paredes this offseason. If he is made available in trade talks, though, it seems as if the Red Sox will consider making an offer.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
