In other words, they need production whenever possible as things heat up. And since Hunter Renfroe has been struggling immensely since the team claimed him off waivers from the Angels, <a href="https://twitter.com/ByRobertMurray/status/1703841699481743681" rel="noopener">he’s been DFA’d</a>.</p><p>Via Robert Murray:</p><p>“The Reds have designated outfielder Hunter Renfroe for assignment.”</p><p>It was only August 31st when Cincy decided <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/reds-news-hunter-renfroe-breaks-silence-on-getting-claimed-by-cincinnati" rel="noopener">to pick up Renfroe</a>, an eight-year veteran who was hitting .242 with 19 home runs for Los Angeles in 126 contests. But with the Halos out of playoff contention, they decided to part ways with a plethora of players, including the outfielder.</p><p>Since putting on a Reds jersey, Renfroe was batting just .128 in 14 games. Not a huge sample size, but Cincinnati wasn’t prepared to let him potentially figure it out. He is a free agent this winter.</p><p>Renfroe was taken in the first round of the 2013 MLB Draft after a standout career at Mississippi State. Aside from the Angels, Padres, and Reds, he’s also suited up for the Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, and Tampa Bay Rays.</p><p>Given his experience, he would be a decent pickup for a contender since he’s played in a World Series with the Rays and also a couple of AL Championship Series. But, Renfroe wouldn’t be eligible to play in the postseason given league rules. Hunter Renfroe, Matt Moore, Lucas Giolito, and Reynaldo Lopez. All of them were placed on waivers, with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/angels-adding-lucas-giolito-to-shohei-ohtani-led-staff-via-trade-with-white-sox" rel="noopener">Giolito and Lopez</a> just recently coming over to the team at the trade deadline.</p><p>With all the dust settled, Giolito, Lopez, and Moore were claimed by the Cleveland Guardians, while Renfroe is now a member of the Cincinnati Reds. But, this whole waiver situation, which seemed foreign not only to most fans but even the players, caught these guys by surprise. After all, Renfroe had to literally play twice more for the Angels.</p><p>Via The Athletic:</p><p>“I had to play two games knowing that basically you’re probably going to be gone,” Renfroe said. “Tough scenario.”</p><p>In fact, the front office <a href="https://theathletic.com/4827041/2023/09/01/mlb-waivers-reds-angels-guardians/" rel="noopener">had to explain</a> to Renfroe and the others how the whole waiver process worked:</p><p>“Perry kind of explained it a little bit better for us,” Renfroe said. “Nevin had no idea about it either. It was kind of a weird scenario.”</p><p>Lopez was in the same boat:</p><p>“It was interesting to learn that side of the game,” López said Friday through Cleveland interpreter Agustín Rivero. “Obviously, we didn’t know much of it.</p><p>“It was a crazy week,” López said.</p><p>Crazy, indeed. The Reds actually tried to claim the three pitchers as well but basically, the team with the worst record gets priority, hence why Cleveland landed Giolito, Moore, and Lopez instead.</p><p>Not an ideal situation for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/angels-news-la-makes-shocking-roster-move-with-lucas-giolito-four-others" rel="noopener">the Angels</a>, who just traded two of their best prospects to Chicago for Giolito and Lopez. Renfroe <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/angels-news-la-makes-shocking-roster-move-with-lucas-giolito-four-others" rel="noopener">hit waivers</a> as cost cutting took center stage in the mind of Angels owner Arte Moreno. But another team’s loss in another’s gain, and the Cincinnati Reds, a team that has unexpectedly crashed the playoff picture in 2023, will be benefitting from the addition of Renfroe off the waiver wire.</p><p>While the Angels’ failed playoff push could not have been easy for Renfroe to deal with, his move to Cincinnati will be renewing the lease of his 2023 campaign. And to the 31-year old right fielder’s credit, he <a href="https://twitter.com/CharlieG__/status/1697609240213385622" rel="noopener">seems to be thrilled</a> to land on a team that’s still within striking distance of a coveted playoff spot.</p><p>“I’m a small town country boy who’s excited to play here,” Renfroe said, per Charlie Goldsmith, Reds reporter for Cincinnati.com’s Enquirer.</p><p>In addition to being excited to play in Cincinnati, Hunter Renfroe is “excited to do whatever he can” to aid in the Reds’ playoff push. With the Reds’ best right fielder, Jake Fraley, having just recovered from a toe injury that kept him out for almost a month, Renfroe helps reassure the team at that position.</p><p>With the addition of Renfroe, the Reds will now be boasting an assortment of riches in the outfield. Renfroe will be suiting up alongside TJ Friedl, one of the team’s best position players this season, and Harrison Bader, yet another player with considerable experience as an everyday player whom the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/reds-news-cincinnati-claims-hunter-renfroe-harrison-bader-waivers-playoff-push" rel="noopener">Reds claimed off waivers</a>. Beyond those three, the Reds also have Will Benson and the returning Fraley to give the team five players who could make reasonable arguments for a consistent spot on the lineup.</p><p>Hunter Renfroe will immediately be coming into the Reds roster as one of the team’s biggest threats to go deep. No Reds player has hit more than 18 home runs to this point in the season; the former Angels right fielder has hit 19, giving the team’s offense a different scoring dimension. Renfroe actually miscalculated where the ball was going and just threw his left hand up for a hail mary try. Fortunately for Renfroe, his prayer was answered, leaving Shohei Ohtani and the rest of the Angels players in disbelief.</p><p>Renfroe was brought in by the Angels in the offseason mostly to get Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout help on offense, but he also showed some defensive chops in his first game in Los Angeles uniform. Renfroe joined the Angeles last February on a one-year, $11.9 million deal.</p><p>Before coming over to join Shohei Ohtani and the Angeles in LA, Renfroe played for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2022 during which he slashed .315/.492/.807 with 29 home runs and 72 RBI along with an OPS+ of <a href="https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/renfrhu01.shtml" rel="noopener">126</a>. Renfroe has hit at least 26 home runs in five of seven seasons so far in Major League Baseball. He also played before for the San Diego Padres, Tampa Bay Rays, and Boston Red Sox.</p><p>The Angels have not been to the postseason since 2014, and they are hoping that this will be the year when the franchise finally breaks that ugly drought.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Renfroe <a href="https://twitter.com/TaylorBlakeWard/status/1595510085324660736" rel="noopener">revealed his expected role</a> for team following the trade, per Taylor Blake Ward.</p><p>“Hunter Renfroe says the Angels expect him to play everyday in right field but he’s open to whatever they have planned: ‘If I need to bunt, I’ll bunt. I can play first. I hope I don’t have to play second base… Mike Trout has center field pretty well locked down,'” Ward wrote on Twitter.</p><p>Hunter Renfroe is not planning on stealing Mike Trout’s centerfield job anytime soon. But he is willing to do whatever the Angels ask of him.</p><p>The Angels have been the most aggressive team so far during the offseason. In addition to trading for Renfroe, they have also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/angels-news-la-trades-for-gio-urshela-casting-doubt-on-anthony-rendons-health" rel="noopener">acquired</a> 3B/SS Gio Urshela from the Minnesota Twins<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/angels-news-tyler-anderson-leaves-dodgers-for-anaheim-on-three-year-contract" rel="noopener"> and signed</a> SP Tyler Anderson in free agency.</p><p>The Angels faced some backlash when they announced that Shohei Ohtani would not be traded this offseason. But they have begun to win over the MLB world once again via their aggressive offseason pursuit. And the team is still looking to add more talent in order to build a contender around Mike Trout and Ohtani.</p><p>With superstars such as Trea Turner, Aaron Judge, Jacob deGrom, and Justin Verlander still available in free agency, it will be interesting to see if the Angels make anymore high-profile moves.
