Unfortunately, there is a good possibility that they lose <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-willy-adames-gets-100-real-about-future-amid-pending-free-agency">shortstop Willy Adames</a> in free agency. Rival NL teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves have been interested in the veteran in the recent past, and <a href="https://x.com/JonHeyman/status/1842939581118759244" rel="noopener">according to reports</a> from Jon Heyman on X (formerly Twitter), they could make a move.</p><p>“Willy Adames, spiritual leader of Brew Crew, has been target of Dodgers, Braves and Giants in past and they’re seen as among possible landing spots,” reported Heyman on the social media site. “Brewers would love to keep him but understand he’s probably out of price range. LA, with Friedman/Rays link, possible favorite?”</p><p>The 29-year-old is in the middle of his prime, starring with the Brew Crew for the last three and a half seasons. They acquired him from the Tampa Bay Rays during the 2021 season. Now, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-willy-adames-brewers-contract-extension-update-ahead-free-agency">Adames could hit free agency</a> for the first time in his career. Would a move out west to Tinseltown appeal to the shortstop? Miguel Rojas plays the majority of time there now, but he’s a veteran on the back end of his career. The matchup was the only one of the four to go the distance and the winner-take-all Game 3 did not disappoint with the dramatics. Unfortunately for the Brewers, the loss ended their season.</p><p>Milwaukee lost in the Wild Card round at home for the second consecutive season. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-pat-murphy-tragedy-take-painful-meltdown-vs-mets">way the Brewers lost</a> this year left an extra sting in the chests of their fans as the Milwaukee faithful have to endure another long offseason following a crushing playoff defeat.</p><p>The Brewers have always been a team better by the sum of their parts rather than a few individual stars. Still, those key players have to step up in the crucial moments of the season. When those moments emerged for Milwaukee, their stars crumbled.</p><p>It’s sometimes unfair to point the blame toward a particular player, especially in a team sport like baseball. Different performances from these <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-power-rankings-2024-playoff-x-factors">Brewers x-factors</a> could have led Milwaukee to winning ways. Instead, they’re packing up their lockers and looking ahead to 2025.</p><h2><b>Hoskins continues postseason struggles</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Rhys-Hoskins-Brewers.jpg"><figcaption>Benny Sieu-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The signing of Rhys Hoskins last offseason didn’t move the needle for a ton of people. The first baseman was coming off a lost season thanks to a torn ACL and has always been known as a slugger rather than an all-around hitter.</p><p>Hoskins enjoyed a solid season with Milwaukee but eyes especially turned to him when the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-brutal-postseason-history-mets-loss">Brewers were paired with the Mets</a> for their Wild Card series. Hoskins and the Mets have a long history stemming from his time with the Philadelphia Phillies. Some of that spilled into the regular season with his Brewers teammates joining the fun.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-rhys-hoskins-100-real-what-need-avoid-elimination">Hoskins entered the series</a> with a career .769 OPS and 38 extra-base hits in 90 games against the Mets. His OPS against New York in five games this season was .889. He did not record a hit in the three playoff games, going 0-for-9 with three strikeouts. He was lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning of Game 3, an anticlimactic end to his first season with Milwaukee.</p><p>Postseason struggles are nothing new for Hoskins who’s now appeared in 20 playoff games in his MLB career. He is a career .141 hitter in the MLB playoffs with over 32 percent of his plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.</p><p>The Brewers didn’t need Rhys Hoskins to be Babe Ruth, but going hitless in a three-game playoff series is not something a $12 million player is paid to do. Hoskins has an opt-out in his contract and could be one-and-done with Milwaukee.</p><h2><b>All-Star reliever comes up small again</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Devin-Williams-Brewers.jpg"><figcaption>Benny Sieu-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Having reliable pitching is crucial to a team’s postseason success. Few teams had better pitching than the Brewers this year but their best reliever faltered in crunch time.</p><p>Closer Devin Williams was tasked with trying to close out the Mets and the series. With a two-run lead in the ninth inning of Game 3, Williams walked the first batter he faced and allowed another to reach base before Pete Alonso drove in the game-winning run with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-fans-explode-after-epic-comeback-win-vs-brewers">three-run homer off Williams</a>.</p><p>The two-time All-Star allowed another run before being pulled. He recorded two outs, giving up four runs in his final appearance of the season.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-devin-williams-shares-true-feelings-over-disastrous-performance-vs-mets">playoff woes continue for Williams</a> who allowed a pair of runs and walked three batters in his postseason debut last October. He now has a 23.14 ERA in 2 1/3 playoff innings.</p><p>There is no doubt that Devin Williams is among the league’s most prolific relievers. He has a career 1.83 ERA, a number that shrinks to 1.66 over the past three seasons. Upon his return from injury this year, Williams carved through batters to the tune of a 1.25 ERA. He struck out 43 percent of the batters he faced in the regular season.</p><p>However, Williams has been unable to live up to expectations in the MLB playoffs, albeit in a small sample size. He is a significant reason why the Brewers have been postseason mainstays, but he also threw the pitch that cost them the lead in their final game of the 2024 season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After all, anything goes in an elimination game, and teams will take every advantage they can get.</p><p>Despite throwing only 68 pitches against the Mets two days prior, Peralta did his job, needing only nine strikes to retire the opponent. However, closer Devin Williams gave away a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-pete-alonso-reacts-legendary-playoff-moment-saved-season">three-run homer to Pete Alonso</a>, giving the Mets the lead they would never relinquish.</p><p>Still, Pat Murphy <a href="https://www.reuters.com/sports/baseball/pete-alonsos-blast-sends-mets-past-brewers-series-win-2024-10-04/" rel="noopener">didn’t throw his player</a> under the bus, despite the loss.</p><p>“Devin has been as good a closer as there is in baseball for the 2 1/2 years that he’s played,” Murphy said, per Reuters. “He’s been unbelievable. I’d give him the ballgame tomorrow in the same situation.”</p><p>After the loss, the Brewers have another offseason to lick their wounds. It seemed as though the Brewers’ pitching corps had done its job, but in a cruel twist in the tale, it was two-time All-Star closer Devin Williams who <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-devin-williams-shares-true-feelings-over-disastrous-performance-vs-mets">blew the lead</a> and allowed a three-run home run to Pete Alonso en route to a season-ending 4-2 defeat.</p><p>The Brewers have done a masterful job in remaining competitive even though they’re limited by some budgetary constraints. They also had to weather the loss of their ace Corbin Burnes and manager Craig Counsell, and they did so with aplomb, winning 92 games and once again establishing themselves as the cream of the crop in their division. But now, a long and cold offseason awaits them, as they have a few crucial players <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-rumors-willy-adames-brewers-contract-extension-update-ahead-free-agency">set to enter free agency</a>.</p><p>One of those players is everyday shortstop Willy Adames. Adames has done nothing but be productive during his time with the Brewers; in fact, this season, he set some records along the way. But the Brewers have historically never been a major player in free agency, which casts plenty of doubt as to whether or not Adames will be staying in Milwaukee for next season and beyond.</p><p>“I don’t know if I’m going to come back. I say I hope. And then if not, it’s been a hell of a time here. It’s been an amazing time. He’s only 29 years of age, so he has plenty of productive years left in his career, and his blend of elite power production for the position and solid defense will make keeping him for the foreseeable future an expensively difficult task for the Brewers.</p><p>The Brewers don’t exactly have a ready-made replacement for Adames, so an interesting offseason awaits them especially in the event of a departure from the 29-year-old shortstop in free agency.</p><h2>Brewers are likely to say goodbye to Willy Adames</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Willy-Adames-1.jpg"></figure><p>There is no question that the Brewers were the runaway winner of the trade that brought in Willy Adames from the Tampa Bay Rays. Adames’ contributions during his time with the Brewers are <a href="https://www.fangraphs.com/players/willy-adames/15986/stats?position=SS" rel="noopener">worth 15.5 WAR</a>, according to Fangraphs, which is top-shelf production from someone who plays perhaps the most demanding position on the infield (except for catcher).</p><p>Adames has been a dynamic threat from the plate throughout his time in Milwaukee. He hit 107 home runs over the course of three and a half seasons with the Brewers, and he has been essential in keeping the team afloat amid plenty of changes. Losing him will be a big deal, although nothing is set in stone yet. Perhaps the Brewers dig deep into their pockets and pony up the cash required to keep him in town.</p><p>Alas, the biggest contract the Brewers have shelled out other than Christian Yelich’s nine-year, $215 million deal was Ryan Braun’s five-year, $105 million extension back in 2011. They have not spent more than $80 million on a free-agent deal. Rumor has it that Adames’ next contract could be worth a total of <a href="https://www.si.com/mlb/brewers/news-feed/brewers-star-named-no-4-2025-free-agent-predicted-to-earn-150-million-jackson3" rel="noopener">around $150 million</a>, so it might be time for Brewers fans to say their goodbyes to their everyday shortstop of the past three and a half seasons.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

For the second-consecutive season, the Milwaukee Brewers, despite winning the NL Central, were unable to make it to the NLDS. This time, the Brewers exited the postseason in rather gut-wrenching fashion, with two-time All-Star closer Devin Williams failing to protect a 2-0 lead against the New York Mets in Game 3 of the Wild Card series after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mets-news-fans-explode-after-epic-comeback-win-vs-brewers">allowing a monstrous three-run home run</a> to Pete Alonso in the top of the ninth inning.</p><p>The Brewers could not have asked to be in a better position while holding a two-run lead while needing to get only three outs to secure the ballgame. Williams has been one of the best closers in the MLB this season; despite missing a chunk of time due to injury, Williams still record 14 saves in 15 tries while sporting an elite ERA of 1.25 in 21.2 innings of work this season. But he could not deliver for the Brewers <a href="https://twitter.com/AdamMcCalvy/status/1842031750542705101" rel="noopener">when it mattered the most</a>.</p><p>“I’m not going to make any excuses. I didn’t execute the way I needed to. They got the job done and I didn’t. It’s a lot of disappointment, you know. We worked all year to get to this point. They got me a two-run lead during the ninth, you know, that’s how we draw it up. And I couldn’t come through for the boys. That’s why it makes it that much more disappointing. Everyone did their job except for me. I feel like I let everyone down,” Williams said.</p><h2><b>Brewers get the short end of the MLB playoff format stick</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Brewers-pitcher-Devin-Williams-38-is-relieved-in-the-ninth-inning.jpg"></figure><p>The way the Brewers front office run the team is something to be applauded. They may not break the bank to keep their most talented players past their years of team control, but they have stumbled upon a formula for sustained success. They have made the playoffs six times over the past seven seasons, and in the season in which they failed to make the postseason, they won 86 games.</p><p>However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb-postseason-2024-format-everything-you-need-to-know">over the past two seasons</a>, the Brewers have not reaped the usual rewards that come with winning the division title. Under the previous playoff format, all division winners are guaranteed a spot in the NLDS — a best-of-five series — with two Wild Card teams duking it out in a single-game elimination contest for a spot in the MLB’s final eight.</p><p>But now, the “worst” division winner of the bunch is relegated to the Wild Card — a best-of-three series. For two consecutive seasons, the Brewers have been eliminated from the playoffs by a red-hot Wild Card team after losing just two games.</p><p>Of course, the Brewers could have gotten through to the NLDS had Devin Williams been his usual self, execution-wise. Then, in the bottom of the seventh, Milwaukee took the lead when a pair of unlikely heroes emerged. Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-late-game-home-runs-mets">hit back-to-back home runs</a> to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead late in the game. Milwaukee was attempting an improbable comeback after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-rhys-hoskins-100-real-what-need-avoid-elimination">avoiding elimination in Game Two</a>. The Mets failed to answer in the eighth, setting up the ninth inning fireworks.</p><p>New York’s MVP Francisco Lindor led off the top of the ninth and worked a walk. After Mark Vientos struck out, left fielder Brandon Nimmo singled to right, sending Lindor to third and bringing Alonso to the plate for a career-defining, clutch homer.</p><p>The Mets were up 3-2 but they didn’t stop there. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-willy-adames-jesse-winker-parking-lot-challenge">Brewers’ nemesis Jesse Winker</a> was hit by a pitch. After stealing second, Winker scored on a single to right field by Starling Marte, giving New York a 4-2 advantage heading into the bottom of the ninth.</p><p>The Mets gave the ball to David Peterson. After Frelick led things off with a single to left, Peterson struck out Joey Ortiz and Brice Turang hit into a game-ending double play that Lindor brilliantly handled himself, running to touch second before firing to nail Turang at first.</p><p>The incredible comeback win sends the Mets to the Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies earned the second-seed in the National League by winning the NL East and finishing with the second-best record in baseball behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. Starling Marte added an insurance run with an RBI single, and the franchise finished off the Brewers moments later. Adames then confirmed that he was waiting in the parking lot for Winker, but he never showed up, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post.</p><p>“I told him that when we were chirping at each other,” Adames said. “I was there (in the lot).”</p><p>Heyman said that the reason Winker was so animated was that he was still upset about being hit by a pitch Brewers starter Frankie Montas when the two teams played each other last Friday.</p><p>“He just started yelling to me straight-up,” Adames said. “In the heat of the moment, I’m not going to back down. So we were just chirping. I don’t know what he was mad about.”</p><p>This is shocking from Adames. Apparently, he was ready and willing to continue his conversation with Winker off of the field. While Adames did not say that he planned to get physical with Winker, there are certain connotations that can not be ignored after telling someone to to meet in a parking lot.</p><p>While it would have certainly provided some thrilling drama to an already incredible postseason series, it is probably for the best that Adames and Winker did not have an off-field confrontation following their tense moment during Game 1.</p><h2><b>Jesse Winker’s history with the Milwaukee Brewers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/10-03-24-winker-image.jpg"><figcaption>© Benny Sieu-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Another wrinkle in the Winker-Adames saga is that the two were teammates on the Brewers in 2023. Winker, an All-Star in 2021 with the Cincinnati Reds, failed to live up to expectations in Milwaukee. In just 61 games with the Brewers in 2023, Winker was below the Mendoza line, batting .199, and only hit one home run.</p><p>While neither Winker or Adames mentioned their time as teammates as a potential cause for the situation in Game 1, it would make sense for there to be some hard feelings between the two sides following Winker’s disastrous performance.</p><p>This season, Winker has been much better. Milwaukee Brewers rookie outfielder <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/brewers-news-jackson-chourio-makes-mlb-playoffs-history-game-2-mets">Jackson Chourio delivered not once but twice</a> during Milwaukee’s Game 2 win over the New York Mets in the NL Wild Card Series. It was incredible to watch as the 20-year-old seized the opportunity in the biggest at-bats of the season.</p><p>Chourio launched a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first inning, tying the game after the Mets scored in the opening frame. He then started the bottom of the eighth with another homer, tying the game at three and sparking a three-run inning for the Brewers.</p><p>The moment wasn’t too much for Chourio, who’s lived with lofty expectations all season. He’s lived up to the hype every step of the way.</p><p>“I think the adrenaline is still getting to me,” Chourio said <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/41578952/garrett-mitchell-tiebreaking-hr-puts-brewers-mets" rel="noopener">through an interpreter</a>, per Bradford Doolittle of ESPN. “It was a very special moment for me, and it’s one I’m going to look back on and remember for the rest of my life.”</p><p>Chourio recorded two hits in his playoff debut in the two-hole Tuesday, scoring once and driving in a run in an 8-4 Brewers loss. He was lifted to the top of the order in Game 2. Phil Maton allowed a few home runs, and the Mets could not complete the sweep. However, New York does have Jose Quintana on the mound, and he had a very good month of September. His runs allowed in his last start were his first allowed in the the month. He had an ERA under 1.00 in September, so he is entering this game with the hot hand. If he can continue to throw the ball well, the Mets will win.</p><p>Quintana has been good in his last six starts. In that span, Quintana is 4-1 with 36.1 innings pitched, 25 hits allowed, 29 strikeouts to 11 walks, and an ERA of just 0.74. He is the man the Mets want on the mound in this elimination game, he just has to perform. In order to win this game, Quintana has to go at least into the sixth inning. He is averaging six innings pitched in his last six starts, so it is doable. If he can throw five or six strong, the Mets will advance to the NLDS.</p><h2><b>Why The Brewers Will Cover The Spread/Win</b></h2><p>Tobias Myers is quietly having a great season. You do not hear much about him, but you should. He had a couple of rough months to begin the season, but Myers has been lights out since the beginning of June. In that span, Myers has made 19 starts (20 games pitched), thrown 111.1 innings pitched, struck out 100 while walking just 26, and his ERA is 2.43. He has the talent to shut down the Mets, and it would not be surprising to see him go six strong innings in this game.</p><p>Milwaukee has faced Quintana twice this season, and he has gone less than five innings in both games. This is the playoffs, and an elimination game, so going less than five as a starter is not unheard of. However, the Mets played a double-header on Monday, and their bullpen is feeling the pressure. Getting Quintana to exit the game early would be huge towards advancing to the next round. If the offense can get going a bit in this game, the Brewers will win.</p><h2><b>Final Mets-Brewers Prediction &amp; Pick</b></h2><p>This is a great pitching matchup, even though it does not feature big names. Both pitchers have thrown the ball well, and that should continue. The playoffs are a different animal, though. Tobias Myers is a rookie, so he has not yet pitched in a playoff game. Quintana has the playoff experience, and I think he will outpitch Myers.
