Baltimore’s offense has carried them in 2023, and the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-news-baltimore-finalizing-jack-flaherty-trade-cardinals" rel="noopener">trade deadline acquisition</a> of SP Jack Flaherty was supposed to improve the rotation. Instead, Flaherty has not pitched well in Baltimore and the Orioles made a shocking rotation move as a result. Flaherty is <a href="https://www.masnsports.com/blog/orioles-reduce-rotation-to-five-starters-by-changing-flaherty-s-role" rel="noopener">reportedly moving</a> from the starting rotation to the bullpen, per Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports.</p><p>The Orioles rotation was set to feature six pitchers prior to this decision. Flaherty’s move to the bullpen doesn’t mean he will not be a factor down the stretch and in the playoffs though. Manager Brandon Hyde addressed Flaherty’s new role, via Kubatko as well.</p><p>“I’m really interested to see what it looks like,” Hyde said. “You’ve seen the fastball to 97, you see the sharp curveball, so let’s see what it looks like out of the ‘pen. Maybe he can be a piece for us. I don’t know. Whether it could be a length guy, maybe it could be a right-on-right guy. We’re looking for that. We’re looking for right-on-right guys. I think it’s worth a shot to take a look.”</p><h2><b>Orioles: Jack Flaherty’s 2023 struggles </b></h2><p>Flaherty was once considered one of the best starting pitchers in baseball. Injuries limited him over the past few years though. The 27-year-old has been healthy for the most part in 2023, but hasn’t performed well.</p><p>Prior to being traded from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Orioles ahead of the deadline, he posted a 4.43 ERA in St. Louis. Flaherty has regressed in Baltimore, currently pitching to the tune of a 6.68 ERA. Between the Orioles’ starting pitching depth and Flaherty’s struggles, the decision to move Flaherty to the bullpen makes sense.</p><p>That said, Flaherty may play a pivotal role for Baltimore’s relief core. As Hyde stated, Flaherty still owns an impressive fastball and can get outs. A so-so performance after the trade deadline allowed the Tampa Bay Rays to catch up to them a little. Making matters worse are injuries to some of their stars. Prized <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-grading-baltimore-cardinals-jack-flaherty-trade" rel="noopener">trade deadline acquisition</a> Jack Flaherty <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-jack-flaherty-scratched-start-blue-jays" rel="noopener">missed his last scheduled start</a> due to injury. Thankfully, it seems like the injury won’t be bothering the new Orioles starter too much, based on Roch Kubatko’s <a href="https://twitter.com/masnRoch/status/1694812842287837216" rel="noopener">recent report</a>.</p><p>“Brandon Hyde said he’s waiting on Jack Flaherty. Feeling better. Played catch today”</p><p>Flaherty’s first start for the Orioles was incredible: a six-inning affair where he struck out eight and only gave up a run in four hits. Since then, though, his other starts have been shaky at best and disastrous at worst. He had another 8 K game (albeit with three earned runs) in a loss to the Astros before completely melting down against San Diego.</p><p>Against the Padres, Jack Flaherty pitched for just three innings. In those three innings, the Orioles righty gave up seven runs on four hits and four walks. It was a disaster, and it put Baltimore in a hole that they were never truly able to come back from.</p><p>Flaherty was supposed to start in Wednesday’s affair against the Toronto Blue Jays. However, the Orioles scratched him from the start due to general soreness. It does seem like Flaherty won’t be facing the Jays today, but he will be back in action soon against either the Rockies or the White Sox. And sometimes, those are the hard decisions to make especially when you want to take the ball every time out. Flaherty pitched fairly well, allowing three earned runs across five innings against the Houston Astros while striking out eight hitters. It was good energy. Kind of feed off it.”</p><p>Jack Flaherty’s comments will surely receive backlash from Cardinals fans. First off, the St. Louis faithful will simply not like the statement. Additionally, though, the Cardinals usually tend to rank within the top half of the league in attendance.</p><p>Perhaps Flaherty isn’t drawing attention to a lack of fans, rather, he may be stating that since the Cardinals have struggled in 2023 the energy hasn’t been quite as noticeable at Busch Stadium. Meanwhile, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/orioles-news-adley-rutschman-leads-baltimore-79-year-old-feat" rel="noopener">the Orioles are playing well</a> so the fans are excited and passionate right now.</p><p>The Orioles are counting on Jack Flaherty to lead the rotation. He hasn’t been dominant in 2023 by any means, but Flaherty is a starting pitcher with experience in the big leagues. Despite having a bit of a down year, the star is still ready to contribute to a winning team. Don’t believe me? The Cardinals are hot garbage this season with every part of their roster falling apart at the seams. Flaherty isn’t having a “bad” season, per se, but he’s been playing way below the level that many know he can reach. With the Orioles, the pitcher is hoping he can work much better with better run support and a winning team.</p><p>The Orioles have one of the best bullpens in the league, boasting a lot of talented relievers. However, starting pitching is a bit of an issue for them. With the playoffs approaching and the team needing a solid rotation for that time, Baltimore traded for one of the pitchers available during the trade deadline. If Flaherty can play similar to his past form, the team will be very happy coming into the postseason.</p><p>How far can this Orioles team go in the playoffs? No one really expected them to be top contenders in the American League.
