Beau Brieske has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo, and the Tigers are calling up left-handed pitcher Matt Gage as his replacement. Detroit learned on Thursday that starting pitcher <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-jackson-jobe-crushing-injury-update-aj-hinch">Jackson Jobe will miss the remainder of the season</a> as he needs Tommy John surgery, and he was put on the 60-day IL to make room for Gage on the 40-man roster.</p><p>“LHP Matt Gage has been selected today from Triple-A Toledo. RHP Beau Brieske was optioned to Triple-A following last night’s game,” Tigers PR said in a post. “Gage will wear uniform number 99. To make room for Gage on the 40-man roster, RHP Jackson Jobe has been transferred to the 60-day injured list.”</p><p>Big changes are coming to the Tigers pitching staff as Jackson Jobe and Beau Brieske both made regular appearances this season. Jobe was part of the starting rotation before his injury, and Brieske has been coming out of the bull pen.</p><p>Brieske has struggled a bit to start the season as he has appeared in 22 games and pitched 22 innings. He has surrendered 24 hits and 16 earned runs in those 22 innings, which is good for a 6.55 ERA and 1.64 WHIP. Now, Brieske is going down to the minors to try and get his groove back.</p><p>It’s been a couple of years since Matt Gage pitched in the majors as his last appearance was back in 2023 with the Houston Astros. He made his major league debut back in 2022 with the Toronto Blue Jays, and he had some productive outings as he gave up two earned runs on six hits in 13 innings of work. In 2023 with the Astros, Gage allowed two earned runs and six hits in 6.2 innings. When he has pitched at this level, he has been solid.</p><p>With Jackson Jobe hurt and Beau Brieske down in the minors, this Tigers pitching staff is going to look a bit different. Jobe was just called up late last season, and he was off to a good start this year. He experienced some discomfort in a start a couple of weeks ago, but it was unclear how severe his injury was. Now we know that it is as serious as it gets.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-jackson-jobes-postgame-absence-sparks-injury-concerns">Jackson Jobe last made a start on May 28th</a> against the San Francisco Giants on May 28th. His velocity fell off during the outing, and he has been out with an injury ever since. The Tigers went through the evaluation process, and the UCL injury <a href="https://www.mlb.com/tigers/news/jackson-jobe-tigers-tommy-john-surgery" rel="noopener">was discovered</a>.</p><p>“As is standard medical evaluation process, we sought additional evaluations,” Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg said on Wednesday, according to an article from MLB.com. “Through that evaluation process, the UCL injury was also discovered. From there, there were a series of conversations between Jackson, the doctors and the medical staff. And ultimately, surgery was determined as the path.”</p><p>The Tigers have all the confidence in the world that Jobe will get through this difficult journey and come back stronger, but it will be a very long road.</p><p>“It’s obviously really disappointing news,” Greenberg added. “I really feel for Jackson. Obviously everybody sees the talent. He made a really positive impression to this team in his short time here. He’s going to work through this. He’s a very determined individual. I have no question he’ll work through this process and be a really important contributor for this team for a very long time.”</p><p>Another Tigers pitcher that has gone through the same injury is Casey Mize. His 2022 season ended early because of it, but he has worked his way back and is now in the Detroit starting rotation. He knows that Jobe will do the same.</p><p>“Hate it for him, obviously, having gone through it,” Casey Mize said. “It’s a long process, but it’s one I know he’ll attack. I hate it for our team as well. Jackson’s a special talent. It’s a long road, but I know he’s going to work really hard and come out of it better and be able to help us when he gets back. Feeling for him, but I know in the end, everything’s going to be all right for him.”</p><p>The Tigers are one of the best teams in baseball this year, so the last thing that they wanted to see was an injury to a key player like Jackson Jobe. It was unclear how long Jobe was going to be out for, but we now know that it is much longer than originally thought. The young starter will undergo Tommy John surgery, and he <a href="https://x.com/EvanPetzold/status/1932929591691079753" rel="noopener">will miss</a> the remainder of the season.</p><p>“Jackson Jobe will undergo Tommy John surgery, according to the #Tigers,” Evan Petzold said in a post. “He will miss the remainder of the 2025 season.”</p><p>This is devastating news for a Tigers team that has had some unfortunate injury trouble with their starting pitchers so far this season. Detroit just got Casey Mize back from a lengthy absence, and they were hoping to see Jackson Jobe return to the rotation as well. Now that will obviously not be the case.</p><p>Jobe came up to Detroit for the first time at the end of last season as the Tigers prepared for a postseason push. He appeared in two games during the regular season and gave up no runs and just one hit in four innings.</p><p>Postseason experience was gained last season as well as Jobe threw three innings during Detroit’s playoff run. He didn’t have as much success then as he gave up three runs in three innings of work.</p><p>Jobe was off to a good start this season as he appeared in 10 games and had a 4.22 ERA and 1.49 WHIP after pitching 49 innings. The Tigers were very successful with Jobe on the mound as they went 9-1 in games that he started, and he finished with a 4-1 record.</p><p>Losing Jobe is incredibly unfortunate as he is one of many young stars on this Tigers team, and his future looks incredibly bright. This will obviously be a difficult setback for him.</p><p>Now that the Tigers are down a starting pitcher, it will be interesting to see how they approach the trade deadline. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-hit-milestone-for-1st-time-since-2013-with-win-over-orioles">Detroit is currently the best team in the league</a>, and it is looking to add talent to load up for a playoff run. There have been some big names mentioned as potential trade targets, and now that the Tigers are down a starting pitcher, it seems likely that they look to fill that void with a trade. However, A.J. Hinch and the Tigers walk away from the victory concerned about the health of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-jackson-jobe-major-vote-of-confidence-from-aj-hinch-after-4-0-start">breakout pitcher Jackson Jobe</a>. The 22-year-old started the game and pitched 4.2 innings, allowing all three of the runs the Giants scored. However, his absence from postgame activities is cause for concern, especially with Reese Olson still out.</p><p>Jobe <a href="https://x.com/EvanPetzold/status/1927831539548627096" rel="noopener">was not in the clubhouse</a> after the game and did not speak to reporters, according to Detroit Free Press reporter Evan Petzold. Detroit’s manager spoke to reporters, saying that his young starter could end up heading to the minor leagues for a tune-up.</p><p>Jobe did not get a win against the Giants, but the righty has exceeded expectations in his second season in Major League Baseball. Across ten starts, the 22-year-old is 4-1, providing Hinch with a reliable pitcher at the back end of his rotation. His 4.22 ERA is not the best, but he has executed his role to near-perfection in 2025.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-detroit-agrees-deal-giants-guardians-pitcher-alex-cobb">Tigers await new addition Alex Cobb’s debut</a>, giving Hinch a decision to make when he returns. Olson is on Detroit’s injured list with a finger injury, but could be back in the next week. When Hinch’s starting rotation is fully healthy, Jobe could be the odd man out, especially when considering his relative lack of experience, especially in the postseason.</p><p>If Jobe is injured, it isn’t the end of the world for Detroit. They have the depth to be without him for a stretch, and their offense is more than capable of carrying the load. Riley Greene, Spencer Torkelson, and Kerry Carpenter lead one of the best lineups in the league. The team’s balance on both ends is one of the main reasons they sit atop the standings.</p><p>Jobe’s status is something to watch for the Tigers moving forward. The young pitcher has proven himself as a major league-level talent. He ended up lasting six innings, and he gave up six hits and two runs while striking out five and walking two. Jobe ended up getting the win, and he is now 4-0 on the season.</p><p>Jackson Jobe got pulled up at the end of last season, and he is now part of the Tigers’ starting rotation. With a perfect record so far, Detroit <a href="https://www.mlb.com/tigers/news/akil-baddoo-spencer-torkelson-jackson-jobe-lead-tigers-to-win" rel="noopener">feels pretty good</a> whenever their youngster is out on the mound.</p><p>“I think it builds the expectation that we have a chance to win every time [Jobe] pitches, and we do,” manager AJ Hinch said, according to an article from MLB.com. “Jackson on the mound, it’s a big boost for him to win a deciding game in a three-game series.”</p><p>Jobe hasn’t been in the majors for long, but he is already a major contributor on the mound for the best team in baseball. He is feeling good, but he also doesn’t think that he is reaching his full potential yet.</p><p>“It feels good,” Jobe said. “Aside from the outing in Denver [six runs against the Rockies on May 7], I’ve felt really good with how I’ve thrown. I feel like I’m continuing to get a better understanding of how my stuff plays against big league hitters. Just being able to build that confidence and being more comfortable out there, I feel like I’m really close to putting it all together. It just comes with going out there and gaining experience.”</p><p>The Tigers won by one run against the Blue Jays on Sunday, and without some help from left fielder Akil Baddoo in the first inning, Jobe’s perfect record probably would not have survived. Baddoo made an insane catch on the wall for the first out of the inning with two runners on, and then he made a diving play and turned two to end the inning right after.</p><p>“First inning, really didn’t feel like I had my stuff,” Jobe admitted. “Execution was off. Akil made some really good plays out there and kinda bailed me out. And then as the game went on, I really felt like I got better.”</p><p>Baddoo admitted that he was caught off guard a bit after his insane catch up against the wall. If he doesn’t make that grab, the Tigers might not win that game.</p><p>“Once I caught it, I was like in shock,” Akil Baddoo said. “I wanted to make sure that I get it in. It was a good momentum booster right there.”</p><p>Jackon Jobe knows that the game would’ve been very different without those huge plays from Baddoo.</p><p>“He got me out of that inning, no doubt,” he said.</p><p>After the first inning, Jobe settled in and pitched a great game. He left his team in a position to win, and the bullpen did the rest. That was the third game of the series and the rubber match, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/detroit-tigers/tigers-news-surprise-hero-drops-mic-after-stunning-red-sox-another-walk-off">the Tigers got it done</a>.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
