The longtime pitching coach is heading to the Los Angeles Angels to serve the same post, according to Jeff Wilson of DLLS Sports. He ends his second stint with the Arlington-based ballclub after helping it attain MLB’s No. 1 ERA (3.47) during the 2025 season.</p><p>The organization <a href="https://x.com/Evan_P_Grant/status/1984266289884614963" rel="noopener">attempted to keep</a> Maddux, per Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News, but he will leave after working under departing manager Bruce Bochy for the last three years.</p><p>Maddux, the older brother of Hall of Fame hurler Greg Maddux, initially joined the Rangers in 2009 and experienced their first World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011. He oversaw a staff that ranked in the top half in ERA during this span. The club parted ways with the former MLB right-hander in 2015, but he landed back in Texas when Bochy was hired in 2023. What would ensue is the highlight of Maddux’s career, and the highlight of this organization.</p><p>When the Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks to win their first-ever championship, many people understandably shined the spotlight on the robust offense. Make no mistake, though, Maddux was instrumental in the team finally reaching the sport’s apex.</p><p>Nathan Eovaldi and Jordan Montgomery were both excellent, and Josh Sborz was virtually unstoppable in the bullpen during the playoffs. Texas is now immortalized in MLB history.</p><p>Pitching became the squad’s central identity this year. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-bruce-bochy-real-nathan-eovaldi-al-cy-young-push">Eovaldi was one of the best starters</a> in baseball when healthy and Jacob deGrom revived his career after enduring injury troubles in his first two years with the Rangers. Additionally, former No. 2 overall pick Jack Leiter came of age and veteran Patrick Corbin posted a sub-4.50 ERA for the first time since 2019. The veteran hurler allowed three earned runs across seven innings of work. deGrom — who pitched for the Mets from 2016-2022 — <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/jacob-degrom-rangers-beat-mets" rel="noopener">reacted to returning</a> to his former home ball park after the game.</p><p>“It was really cool,” deGrom said, via Bill Ladson of MLB.com. “This is where it all started and, coming back here, I thought it was going to be a very special day. I’m thankful for the Mets for playing that (tribute video). These fans were great to me when I was here. That was a really nice thing to do.”</p><p>As deGrom mentioned, the Mets played a tribute video for him. The pitcher earned two National League Cy Young awards and a Rookie of the Year honor during his time in New York. He never did win a championship with the ball club, but the Mets had a number of competitive seasons with deGrom leading the way.</p><p>After earning four All-Star selections with his former team, Jacob deGrom earned his first All-Star selection this season with the Rangers. He currently holds a 2.82 ERA across 28 starts. The Rangers star has recorded 171 strikeouts as well. At 37 years old, deGrom looks like the ace-caliber pitcher he once was in New York with the Mets.</p><p>Meanwhile, deGrom’s Rangers are 78-70. Texas is in both the American League West and Wild Card races at the moment. Winning the division is the goal, but the ball club would not complain about reaching the postseason as a Wild Card team. A few months ago, 2025 looked like a lost season for the Rangers, but now Texas appears to be a legitimate contender.</p><p>The Rangers and Mets will go head-to-head once again on Saturday afternoon at 4:10 PM EST.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It will be his first time seeing his old team since he departed Queens after the 2022 regular season.</p><p>The 37-year-old <a href="https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/3342945/degrom-set-to-face-mets-for-1st-time-since-leaving-for-texas" rel="noopener">recently spoke about</a> what his time with the organization and support from the New York fans meant to him.</p><p>“It holds a special place in my heart,” deGrom told the Associated Press. “I pitched a lot there, and Mets fans were always good to me. So taking the mound in front of that crowd was always a fun experience.”</p><p>Across nine years with the Mets, deGrom earned 82 wins and posted a 2.52 ERA. He was a member of the 2015 team that took home the National League crown and was able to win two Cy Young Awards during his time in Flushing.</p><p>“With what he did for the Mets, how much time he spent there, I’m sure he’s probably going to have some memories and emotions even before he pitches,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said. “He’ll be well-received, no doubt. But it’s going to be a big game, so there may be some scattered boos in there.”</p><p>deGrom’s start will mark the beginning of a critical three-game set between the Rangers and Mets.</p><p>Both teams are vying for a Wild Card berth. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-chris-young-intriguing-claim-playoffs">Texas is currently 77-70 and two games back</a> of the final American League Wild Card spot, while New York holds a 1.5 game lead on the final National League Wild Card spot with a 76-71 record.</p><p>“All these games for us are very important. Same for them,” deGrom said. “So it’s gong to be fun. We’ve got to win, they’ve got to win. At 66-67, the Rangers sit 7.0 games back in the American League West and 5.5 games back of an AL Wild Card spot. Jacob deGrom — who surrendered two runs over five innings while striking out seven against the Halos on Monday — has not earned an individual win in over a month. deGrom <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46076452/rangers-jacob-degrom-frustrated-month-win" rel="noopener">made an honest admission</a> following his outing, via ESPN.</p><p>“Tonight just was inconsistent the whole time,” the Rangers star pitcher said. “Missed with a lot of sliders, missed with fastballs, first pitch of the game threw right down the middle. Just kind of all over the place, so that was frustrating.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-jacob-degrom-skip-start-shoulder-soreness">deGrom had been dealing with shoulder fatigue</a> but was able to return and pitch against the Angels. Perhaps the concern played a role in his up and down start on Monday. It goes without saying, but the Rangers will need deGrom to be on top of his game if they are going to make any kind of postseason run.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mlb/texas-rangers/rangers-news-jacob-degrom-gut-punch-return-all-star-game">deGrom, who earned his first All-Star selection in 2025 since the 2021 season</a>, has pitched to a 2.79 ERA across 25 starts. He had not made more than 16 starts in a season since 2019, so his 25 outings are encouraging without question. The right-handed hurler has also recorded 155 strikeouts in his 145.1 innings of work.</p><p>A two-time Cy Young winner, deGrom is one of the best pitchers in baseball when healthy. Injuries have limited him in recent seasons, but he has reminded the MLB world of his talent so far in the ’25 campaign. deGrom did not have his best outing on Monday, but he also received no run support.</p><p>The Rangers will attempt to jump back into the win column in their rematch with the Angels on Tuesday night.
